Realme 11 Pro Series Update Disables Contentious ‘Enhanced Intelligent Services’ feature, Revamps Description

Realme was recently accused of collecting personal user data through a Realme UI 4.0 feature known as  “Enhanced Intelligent Services.” The description of this feature explicitly mentions that it collects data like device information, app usage statistics, location data, calendar events, and statistics related to SMS messages and calls. What really sparked the controversy was the fact that this feature came enabled by default.

Rajeev Chandrashekar, Union Minister of Electronics and Technology said that the government would investigate and verify the claims. Realme later clarified that the feature is there for optimization purposes and the data in question is stored and processed locally. Now, Realme has rolled out a new update for the newly launched Realme 11 Pro 5G and Realme 11 Pro+ 5G which disables this option. The updates come with firmware version RMX3771_13.1.0.524(EX01) and RMX3741_13.1.0.524(EX01).

The update improves system stability and optimizes the power consumption of the camera. In order to prevent additional controversy, the update has also revised the “Enhanced Intelligent Services” feature’s description and has turned it off by default. The description now says that the feature focuses solely on improving the user experience by analyzing device usage patterns. Regarding the optimized charging functionality, it will now utilize local data and app usage statistics directly on the device, while obtaining permission for location information.

A comparable update is anticipated for other Realme devices operating on Realme UI 4.0, as well as devices from sister brands such as OnePlus and Oppo running Android 13. This forthcoming update is expected to modify the language describing this feature and also disable it by default. Reports from users indicate that this feature has been observed on devices from these brands.

Samsung, LG’s key display supplier halts LCD material development, shifts focus to MicroLED and OLED

Merck Group, a prominent supplier to industry giants Samsung and LG, has made a significant strategic decision regarding its focus on display materials. The company has decided to discontinue the development of LCD panels and instead redirect its research efforts towards exploring innovative materials such as MicroLED and OLED.

Samsung Display

Understanding Merck Group’s Decision to Discontinue LCD Development

The shift in Merck Group’s priorities comes in response to the recent announcements made by Samsung and LG, two major players in the display industry, regarding their exit from LCD screen production. As Korean companies, both Samsung and LG have established their dominance in the OLED panel market. Samsung excels in the production of small and medium-sized OLED panels for smartphones and tablets, while LG leads in large-sized OLED panels for OLED TVs.

Given this market landscape, it is not surprising that Merck Group has chosen to align its research and development investments with the emerging trends in the display industry. By ceasing the development of LCD panel materials, the company can now concentrate its resources on self-emitting screen materials like MicroLED and OLED, as well as explore advancements in backlight technologies, including Mini-LED.

Merck Group’s decision reflects the industry’s collective recognition of the growing demand and potential for next-generation display technologies. With OLED displays gaining popularity in various consumer electronics, the suppliers collaborating with Samsung and LG are actively prioritizing the research and development of OLED and other advanced screen materials.

In related news, Chinese display manufacturers, including BOE, CSOT, Tianma, and Visionox, have teamed up to challenge a patent owned by Samsung Display in the United States. This move is in response to Samsung’s previous attempts to block imports of third-party displays that it believes infringe on its patented technologies.

Apple Mac Pro Teardown Reveals a Massive Heat Sink & Non-Expandable Memory

In an exciting update for Apple enthusiasts, iFixit’s maintenance team has released a revealing teardown video of the highly anticipated 2023 Mac Pro. The teardown sheds light on the new changes made by Apple to its flagship desktop computer. While the overall aluminium chassis and internal structure remain largely unchanged, the spotlight is on the new M2 Ultra processor, which has been equipped with a huge heat sink.

The new Mac Pro uses the same sized Motherboard as the old Intel Mac Pro

According to iFixit, removing the Mac Pro’s case is a relatively simple task, but upgrading the internals proves to be more challenging. The disassembly process uncovered an interesting discovery regarding memory configuration. While the user cannot directly upgrade the memory, a replaceable memory module is discreetly tucked away, accompanied by an empty slot. Unfortunately, Apple has confirmed that the empty slot does not support user expansion, featuring memory configuration available only on the official Apple website.

Apple Mac Pro

Surprisingly, the teardown also reveals that Apple has repurposed the powerful cooling solution employed in the Intel-powered version for the M2 Ultra chip. This finding suggests that Apple has chosen to leverage existing cooling components, emphasizing the company’s focus on optimization and efficiency.

Perhaps the most intriguing revelation is the continued use of the same large motherboard as the previous Intel Mac Pro to power the M2 Ultra chip. iFixit’s team expresses their belief that the smaller M2 Ultra chip does not require such a substantial motherboard to function optimally. This insight raises questions about Apple’s design choices, hinting at potential avenues for further miniaturization.

While the external appearance remains familiar, the integration of the M2 Ultra processor and its impressive heat sink highlight Apple’s commitment to delivering powerful performance in a sleek and efficient package. As the Mac Pro continues to push the boundaries of desktop computing, users can look forward to an enhanced experience that blends innovation with reliability. The Mac Pro’s use case is not just limited to resource-intensive tasks, so the new design will make more sense once Apple starts shipping the Mac Pro out.

In a recent announcement on its official Weibo account, Fangbao, a new brand by BYD focusing on “personalization,” has unleashed a set of “official spy photos.” The images provide a glimpse into the world of their highly anticipated flagship model, the Fen Leopard, internally known as “SF.” Positioned as a hardcore off-road vehicle and touted as the Mercedes-Benz G-Class benchmark, this beast is ready to awaken the wild instinct within off-road enthusiasts.

The Battery Range of the previous 2316 variant exceeded 1000km, it also had 6 driving modes

Shot in the picturesque location of Yakeshi, Inner Mongolia, the backdrop amplifies the vehicle’s ruggedness and showcases its high toughness factor, reinforcing its off-road identity.

BYD Fangbao 2318

Upon closer inspection, IT Home noted a change in the camouflage on the vehicle body. The most significant alteration is the “mysterious number” printed on the vehicle, which has evolved from “2316” to “2318.” Previously, the company used the number “2316” to highlight the car’s main features, such as dual motors, three differential locks, a battery range exceeding 1000 kilometres, and six driving modes. These details sparked industry speculation, creating anticipation for the new model’s release in June.

However, the recent change from 6 to 8 in the mysterious number suggests that the release date may be pushed forward to August. While this shift may disappoint eager fans, it heightens the excitement surrounding the vehicle’s debut, promising additional surprises and features to look forward to.

As August draws closer, anticipation builds, and the off-road community eagerly awaits the official unveiling of Fangbao’s Electric Vehicle. Stay tuned for more updates on this off-road machine that promises to redefine adventure and deliver an unparalleled driving experience for BYD’s customers. YouTube Ventures into Live E-commerce with Launch of Shopping Channel in South Korea

In an effort to tap into the lucrative livestreaming e-commerce market, YouTube is set to launch its first official shopping channel in South Korea on June 30. The move comes as YouTube seeks to diversify its revenue streams and counter the impact of reduced ad spending and competition from emerging platforms like TikTok.

The Share Prices of YouTube shopping competitors in South Korea are being affected

South Korea, known for its thriving livestreaming e-commerce market led by tech giant Naver, presents an ideal test market for YouTube’s entry into this sector. The global launch of the shopping channel in South Korea will serve as a pilot project, with plans to potentially extend its operation beyond the initially planned 90 days.

YouTube

The shopping channel, primarily conducted in Korean, will feature over 30 prominent brands, including Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Baskin-Robbins, Dunkin’ Donuts, Cosme, and Puma. These brands will engage in live streaming sessions to showcase their products and interact directly with consumers, offering a unique (and ultra-modern) shopping experience.

Google Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler highlighted the significance of this venture, stating that enabling people to shop seamlessly from their favorite creators, brands, and content holds immense potential. With YouTube’s vast user base and reach, the shopping channel has the potential to revolutionize the way people discover and purchase products.

Following the announcement, shares in Naver experienced a 4 per cent decline, while Lotte Shopping, a prominent retailer, witnessed a 3.3 per cent decrease. This demonstrates the impact of YouTube’s entry into the market and the potential disruption it poses to existing players.

Industry analysts at Jingbo Securities predict substantial growth in South Korea‘s live e-commerce market, with projections estimating a rise from 2.8 trillion won (~$2.1 billion) in 2021 to 10 trillion won (~$7.7 billion) in the near future. Currently, Naver dominates approximately 60 percent of the market share, but YouTube’s entrance is expected to promote competition and reshape the industry landscape.

As YouTube ventures into live e-commerce with its innovative shopping channel, it remains to be seen how this new endeavour will shape the future of online shopping in South Korea and potentially expand globally. The fusion of entertainment and commerce could redefine the consumer experience and open up new avenues for brands and creators to connect with their audiences.

AI Is Playing an Increasingly Important Role in SoftBank’s Business, Says CEO Masayoshi Son

Artificial intelligence technologies are becoming more and more common. One example of this is the AI chatbot craze that was started by OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Some companies, like Huawei, are introducing their own AI models to stay competitive. Others, like Apple, are imposing restrictions on the use of generative AI. Microsoft, on the other hand, prefers to integrate ChatGPT into their systems. Based on this, we can say that the technology industry is confused about AI. However, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son seems to be more moderate when it comes to AI usage. Here are the details…

AI Chatbot Craze Continues, with SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son as a Heavy User

xArtificial intelligence is a very controversial topic. Some people are comfortable using AI models like ChatGPT in their daily lives, while others are opposed to it. Masayoshi Son, the CEO of SoftBank, is somewhere in the middle. He uses AI every day, but he says it’s important to be aware of the potential risks. He believes that AI can be a powerful tool for good, but it’s important to use it responsibly.

SoftBank Group Chief Executive Masayoshi Son

“I am chatting with ChatGPT everyday – I am a heavy user,” Son said. “I am very impressed with the technology. It is very helpful for me to get different perspectives on things.” SoftBank is a major investor in AI, and Son has long argued that AI is the driving force behind his investing activity. However, the company has also had some high-profile setbacks in the AI space

SoftBank has made some investments in AI-related companies that have not been successful. For example, SoftBank invested heavily in WeWork, an office-sharing company that was valued at $47 billion in 2019. However, WeWork’s valuation fell sharply after it was revealed that the company had serious financial problems. This led to SoftBank taking a significant loss on its investment.

It remains to be seen whether Son’s use of ChatGPT will help him to make better investment decisions in the future. However, there is no doubt that AI is playing an increasingly important role in SoftBank’s business.
