Google Play Store Is Not Safe: Popular App Secretly Recorded Users’ Voices for almost a Year

The Google Play Store and App Store provide significant convenience for users and a great platform for developers to earn income. However, these open marketplaces can also present risks. A recent incident highlighted this concern, when a legitimate app on the Google Play Store became malicious, secretly sending microphone recordings every 15 minutes. Here are the details…

Google Play Store App iRecorder Transforms into Malicious Spyware That Records Audio from Users

ESET, a name most of us recognize from antivirus software, recently made a dangerous discovery during their tests. According to the company, an app called iRecorder Screen Recorder, available on Google Play Store, records audio every 15 minutes and sends it to the app developer. This scandalous news once again proves that even applications available in official stores cannot always be trusted.

Google Play Store malware

The iRecorder Screen Recorder app, initially launched on the Google Play Store in September 2021, took a dark turn with an update in August 2022. This update incorporated AhMyth, an open-source Remote Access Trojan (RAT), turning the app into a stealthy espionage tool. The RAT gave the app the ability to remotely record audio, link to an attacker’s server, and upload recorded audio and sensitive files.

This update fundamentally shifted the trajectory of the app, turning all of its users into potential victims. The truly terrifying part lies exactly here. Many users, without realizing, have been using the app in this condition for almost nine months, and their voices have been recorded. After the incident came to light, Google removed the iRecorder Screen Recorder app from the Play Store. However, you are also advised to be careful and take the necessary precautions if you have downloaded this app even once.

Communications between an AhRat-infected device and the C2.

Google’s Malware Problem

Despite Google’s best efforts, apps laced with malware have continuously plagued its platform. The technology behemoth usually reacts swiftly in expunging these hazardous apps upon detection. However, their preventive measures to stop these apps from making their way into the Google Play Store in the first place have been less effective. In addition, there has been a perceived lack of transparency about the reasons behind the failure of Google’s own security measures to identify these looming threats.

This most recent case underscores the issue. It involves an application that clandestinely records audio, compromising the privacy of a broad user base. ESET officials suggest that the app, iRecorder, might be part of an active espionage campaign. Yet, without additional evidence to substantiate this claim, it remains just a hypothesis. Google’s role in permitting such a dangerous application to exist on its Play Store, hence, raises questions about culpability and effective digital security measures.

Microsoft adding AI-generated review summaries to Microsoft Store apps

At the recent Microsoft Build 2023 conference in Seattle, Microsoft unveiled several exciting updates for the Microsoft Store, showcasing the company’s commitment to leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) for enhanced user experiences. Among the notable additions is an AI-generated review summary feature, designed to simplify the process of researching and selecting apps.

Microsoft-Store

AI-Generated Review Summaries Simplify App Selection

Microsoft_Store_AI_powered_reviews

The forthcoming AI-generated review summaries aim to provide users with a concise overview of app reviews, eliminating the need to sift through extensive feedback. By harnessing the power of AI, Microsoft intends to streamline the app research process and improve the overall customer experience. While a specific release date has yet to be confirmed, Microsoft has assured users that the feature will be introduced soon.

Microsoft Store AI suggested keywords

In addition to the review summaries, Microsoft announced the introduction of a dedicated section within the Microsoft Store called the AI Hub. This section aims to highlight the best AI-centric apps developed by the Microsoft community and external developers. Apps such as Luminar Neo, Descript, Podcastle, Kickresume, Play.ht, Copy.ai, and Tripnotes are among the featured applications in the AI Hub.

Microsoft is also introducing AI-generated keywords in the Partner Center, empowering developers to better showcase their apps to users. By leveraging AI technology, the Microsoft Store will enhance app discoverability, utilizing developers’ metadata and other relevant signals. Furthermore, users will now have the option to assign multiple categories to each app, providing developers with a valuable tool to reach a wider customer base.

To further support developers, Microsoft announced a change in its Store Ads policy, allowing them to display ads for their apps on Bing search. Previously, the apps featured in the spotlight section at the top of the Microsoft Store were chosen by the editorial team. The inclusion of ads in this section, which may feature videos, aims to drive increased traffic and discoverability for developers’ apps. This change will be implemented in conjunction with Microsoft’s plans to expand the Microsoft Store Ads program to more than 150 regions worldwide, enabling developers to reach a broader audience.

Apple is likely to continue to invest in the Chinese tablet market in the coming years, and it is likely that the company will continue to grow its market share in this important market. In addition to the factors mentioned above, Apple’s focus on education and productivity apps has also helped to drive demand for iPads in China. The company has a number of popular education and productivity apps, such as Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. These apps are used by students, teachers, and businesses in China, and they help to make the iPad a valuable tool for these users.

Android Fingerprint Recognition Systems Vulnerable to Attacks! Hackers Can Unlock Phones Using $15 Equipment

Smartphones are now an essential part of our lives. We use them for everything from communication to financial transactions, and we store all of our personal information on them. This makes them a valuable target for hackers. As you know, the security of smartphones has always been a concern, but it is especially true for Android phones. According to a recent research, a new attack technique discovered by researchers at a Chinese university can be used to unlock Android phones in minutes using equipment worth just $15. Here are the details…

Researchers Discover Flaw in Android Fingerprint Recognition Systems

Researchers from a Chinese university have discovered a way to unlock some Android devices using false fingerprints. The researchers found two security flaws in the fingerprint recognition systems of many Android devices. These flaws can be exploited to create a fake fingerprint that can be used to unlock the device.

If you possess the required technical expertise, you could create this key, or else, it can be bought for a mere $15. Two essential things are needed to perform this attack – the key and 45 minutes of uninterrupted access to the target device. The BrutePrint attack uses the fingerprint database, with the circuit boards executing a straightforward database search on the device to unlock it.

The research team tested this method on eight different Android devices including the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, Vivo X60 Pro, OnePlus 7 Pro, Oppo Reno Ace, Samsung Galaxy S10+, OnePlus 5T, Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G, and Huawei P40. Which devices were compromised, however, was not disclosed due to security reasons.

Interestingly, the research team also tested devices with the iOS operating system – specifically iPhone models with the Touch ID feature. The iPhone SE and iPhone 7 models were tested, and it was found that neither could be hacked using this method, implying that iPhone models are secure from such attacks.

Microsoft is finally bringing Windows Vista-like gadgets to Windows 11 desktop

Even though rumors about Windows 12 are increasing every day, Microsoft continues to work on Windows 11. This highly popular operating system constantly receives new updates and features. According to the information that has emerged, the next feature Microsoft plans to introduce is Vista-like gadgets to the Windows 11 desktop. Here are the details…

Microsoft is finally bringing Windows Vista-like gadgets to Windows 11 desktop

Productivity is a key goal of modern technology. Many products are designed to make our daily tasks easier. This is also true for operating systems. Developers like Microsoft, Apple, and Google are constantly adding tools to their software to improve productivity. One of the most popular productivity tools are widgets. Widgets are small, interactive windows that provide quick access to information or actions. They have become increasingly popular in recent years, and are now available on many different platforms.

According to the latest reports, widgets are coming to Windows. Users will soon be able to pin widgets to their desktops, including those from third-party developers. This will make it even easier to stay productive on Windows. Windows 11’s Widgets feature mirrors the now-obsolete Windows Vista Gadgets.

However, a notable difference is that these widgets have, until now, been confined to the left-hand side of the screen and restricted in functionality. The return of the gadget-like experience signifies that Microsoft is leaning into the capabilities they first offered with Vista, including desktop features like Weather and News.

The move presents a golden opportunity for Microsoft to redefine how widgets function on a PC. The capacity to pin widgets to the desktop is set to significantly enhance user productivity. While the Widget update could potentially be postponed to a later version, the prospect of notable improvements to Widgets is an encouraging development. Updates and improvements are likely to be disseminated via Microsoft Store updates for all Windows 11 versions.

Huawei MateBook D14 2023 gets a cheaper option with less powerful processor

In mid-April, Huawei unveiled the 2023 edition of MateBook D14 and MateBook D16 in China. The D14 went on sale in late April followed by D16 in early May.

Now, a month after the D14 hit the shelves, Huawei has launched a new version of this laptop. The newer model retails almost all the features of the initial one but it is priced lower.

Because this variant arrives with a less powerful processor. Let’s check out the differences between the two models.

Huawei MateBook D14 2023 12th Gen Intel Core i5-1240P

Out of the blue, Huawei announced a new version of MateBook D14 2023 in China. This notebook has the exact same set of specs as the original model, except for the processor.

The original notebook is powered by 13th Gen Intel P series processors (Core i5 and Core i7). Whereas, the new one houses an older 12th Gen Intel Core i5-1240P processor.

Here’s what makes Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus special

Recently, the Oppo Reno 10 series went official in China. Just like the last two generations, the mainline Chinese lineup consists of three models.

These devices are officially called Oppo Reno 10, Oppo Reno 10 Pro, and Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus. Unsurprisingly, the latter model has the best set of features.

In fact, we think that the Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus is the best Reno series smartphone (at least on paper) in a very long time. It offers almost all the important features consumers expect from a premium handset.

If you want a proper flagship smartphone from Oppo, the Find X series is still the one to buy. But this lineup is limited to select markets, unlike Reno.

Further, the Reno 10 Pro Plus is expected to release in more regions than the previous pro plus models. So it will be the most premium Oppo phone in many markets.

Considering this, the Reno 10 Pro Plus seems like a good device overall. But what makes it special? Let’s go through the answer to this question.

1. Beautiful Design

Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus

The Oppo Reno phones are known for their design, and the Reno 10 Pro Plus is no exception. Since design is subjective, some may not like the looks of the new Reno.

However, it is difficult for people not to appreciate the device’s dimensions. Despite packing a lot of things inside, It measures only 8.28mm in thickness and weighs about 194g.

Both the front display glass and the rear glass of the handset are curved to offer a comfortable grip. Finally, it arrives in two lively colors (Twilight Purple and Brilliant Gold) and one standard color (Moonsea Black).

2. Stunning Display

Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus Twilight Purple

The Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus sports a 6.74-inch centered punch-hole curved OLED display with a 93.9% screen-to-body ratio. The 10-bit panel comes with a resolution of 2772 x 1240 pixels, 450 PPI, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a 240Hz touch sampling rate.

The screen can reach a peak brightness level of 1400 nits during HDR playback. Even in standard HBM (High Brightness Mode), it can touch up to 1100 nits.

Lastly, the display supports a 4-stage adaptive refresh rate technology and covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.

3. Powerful Internals

Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus Brilliant Gold

The Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset. This chip is the second-most powerful mobile SoC from Qualcomm.

The chipset is further paired with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. This hardware combo is more than enough to ensure smooth performance throughout the product’s life.

The phone also uses Oppo’s self-developed MariSilicon X chip for image processing.

4. Great Cameras

Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus Moonsea Black

Oppo Reno smartphones are known for their cameras. In the beginning, the company focussed more on hardware but later switched to focus more on software-based features.

Years later, the Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus brings back the hardware prowess with a proper three-lens camera system. The device includes wide, ultra-wide, and periscope zoom lenses.

The handset’s camera setup comprises an OIS-assisted 50MP Sony IMX890 primary sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide unit, a 64MP 3x periscope shooter with OIS, and a 32MP Sony IMX709 RGBW selfie camera with autofocus.

The Reno 5 Pro Plus from 2021 was the last Reno phone with a zoom lens. On the other hand, the 2019 Reno 10x Zoom was the only other Reno handset with a periscope lens.

5. Nifty Features

Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus

The Oppo Reno Reno 10 Pro Plus comes with a few quality-of-life features that enhance the overall experience of using the smartphone.

The device houses Hi-Res Audio-certified linear dual stereo speakers. It also sports an x-axis linear vibration motor to offer 4D vibration.

Further, it arrives with an infrared sensor, which was previously mostly limited to Xiaomi handsets. There’s also support for dual-band GNSS for more accurate positioning and NFC for contactless payments and transit passes.

Last but not least, the phone supports multiple charging protocols, such as all generations of SuperVOOC as well as VOOC, Qualcomm Quick Charge (QC) 2.0, and USB Power Delivery (PD).
