Amazon Announces Another Round of Layoffs, This Time from the Ad Department

Amazon, one of the world’s biggest companies, has confirmed that it is laying off employees in its advertising department as part of the company’s efforts to implement cost-cutting goals set by CEO Andy Jassy. While the scale of the layoffs is unclear, they are aimed at reallocating resources to maximize benefits for customers and ensure the long-term health of the business.

Amazon is also cutting jobs in its cloud computing, Twitch and HR Departments

The move comes as Amazon is undergoing the largest layoffs in its 29-year history. This was implemented after Jassy announced that Amazon will lay off 9,000 additional jobs on top of the 18,000 it cut in November last year and January this year. In addition to the recent layoffs in retail, equipment, recruiting, and human resources, Amazon is also cutting jobs in its advertising, cloud computing, Twitch streaming, and human resources departments.

Amazon Logo

These layoffs are part of a wider trend in the tech industry, as many companies are reassessing their workforce needs in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Companies that have been heavily reliant on office-based workforces are rethinking their strategies, with many planning to continue with remote work arrangements even after the pandemic subsides. This shift is leading to layoffs in certain areas while creating new opportunities in others.

Despite the layoffs, the tech industry is still expected to be a major employer in the coming years. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in computer and information technology occupations is projected to grow 11% from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. This growth is expected to be driven by increasing demand for cloud computing, big data, and cybersecurity.

Apple’s Mixed Reality Headset May Let Users Work Out & Play Sports in VR

Apple is gearing up to unveil its Mixed Reality Headset soon. As the rumours around the headset continue to swirl, many are wondering how this product will fit into the broader market for virtual and augmented reality devices. Some analysts predict that Apple’s entry into the space could be a “game-changer,” given the company’s history of releasing innovative and stylish products that capture the public’s imagination and interest. However, others remain skeptical that the headset will be able to overcome the barriers that have kept other mixed-reality devices from gaining traction in the consumer market. Latest reports state that Apple is integrating its other services, such as Fitness+ with its mixed reality headset, which will allow users to work out in Virtual Reality. The company might even integrate some sports applications with the VR/AR ecosystem, letting users enjoy the thrill of playing sports from the comfort of their homes.

Apple’s Venture into VR & AR is highly anticipated

One key challenge facing the Apple mixed reality headset will be its price point. At an expected cost of $3,000, the device is significantly more expensive than other VR and AR headsets currently on the market. While some enthusiasts and professionals may be willing to pay a premium for Apple’s sleek design and powerful features, many consumers may simply drop the idea of the headset at such a high price tag. It remains to be seen whether Apple can convince a broad audience to invest in this new technology.

Apple

Another question mark hanging over the Apple mixed reality headset is the broader ecosystem of apps and services that will be available for the device. While it’s clear that the headset will have a strong focus on gaming, fitness, sports, and productivity, it’s unclear how well existing apps and services will translate to a mixed-reality environment. Apple’s track record of encouraging developers to create innovative apps for its devices is certainly promising, but it remains to be seen whether the company can create a compelling ecosystem that will entice users to keep coming back to the headset that costs a fortune.

Here’s What Oppo’s Rollable Smartphone Patent Means for the Company

Rollable smartphones and foldable smartphones are both designed to provide larger displays in a portable form factor. However, they differ in how they expand their screen real estate. Foldable smartphones typically have a flexible screen that folds inward, like a book. When unfolded, the screen forms a larger, seamless display. On the other hand, rollable smartphones have a flexible screen that can be unrolled to expand the display size. When not in use, the screen can be rolled back into the device, making it more compact and easier to carry. As companies keep experimenting with designs for the same, new products will always be on the horizon. Recently, Oppo patented a Rollable device, which also featured an under-display camera. Innovation may spell big things for Oppo in the future.

Oppo

What’s particularly interesting about Oppo’s rollable smartphone design is that the camera is only exposed when the device is expanded, remaining obscured under normal circumstances. This patent sparked excitement among tech enthusiasts, who are eager to see how the device will perform once it hits the market. Rollable smartphones are a relatively new concept, and only a few models have been released so far, while foldable smartphones have been available since 2019. Rollable smartphones offer the advantage of a larger screen than foldable smartphones while maintaining a more pocketable form factor. Additionally, rollable displays may be more durable than foldable displays, which are prone to creasing and damage over time.

Rollable Smartphones might just be the ‘Next Big Thing’ in the Market

Oppo is quickly positioning itself as a major player in the foldable/rollable market. The company has the vision to innovate with its technology, and this is not something new. Oppo was one of the first companies to patent the foldable smartphone design, alongside other major players such as Samsung. With more companies taking the initiative to experiment with flexible displays, it will be fascinating to see how these new form factors will be received by consumers. While it’s still too early to say whether rollables or foldables will ultimately become the norm, one thing is certain: the technology has come a long way since the days of the first Samsung Galaxy Fold and has been perfected since.

The driver-assist (ADAS) system will run NVIDIA‘s Drive computing platform, using 12 cameras, one radar, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. The long-range dual-motor version offers a maximum power output of 544hp (400 kW) and 506 lb-ft of torque while the single-motor version offers 272hp (200 kW) and 253 lb-ft of torque. Both the long-range dual- and single-motor models come with a 102 kWh battery pack. The company adds that the car can go from 0 to 60 mph in less than 3.8 seconds.

Polestar 4

It has a 15.4-inch screen up front, which acts as the infotainment system, which is powered by Android Automotive OS and Qualcomm Snapdragon Cockpit Platform. It comes with Apple CarPlay and built-in Google, along with apps like Google Assistant, Maps, and Play, among others.

There’s also a 10.2-inch driver display mounted ahead of the steering wheel that shows speed, battery, and range information. It also offers a head-up display with a 14.7-inch projection area. During snowfall, the HUD text color can automatically switch from white to yellow for better visibility.

The production of Polestar 4 is planned to begin in November this year and is expected to cost around $60,000. As noted earlier, the car will first go on sale in China later this year and then launch in North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific, sometime next year.

Stable ColorOS 13 now available for Oppo A55 & A55s

After updating almost all the newly launched premium and budget smartphones, Oppo is now finishing up its ColorOS 13 rollout by releasing updates for older and less expensive devices. The latest phones to receive the Android 13 update are Oppo A55 and A55s. The update is currently being seeded to the units in China, however, it may soon extend to other regions as the brand has already started beta testing.

Oppo A55 and A55s finally get Android 13

As per official announcements, the ColorOS 13 update is now available for the Oppo A55 and A55s units in China. The smartphones will start receiving the update in a phased manner and it may take a few days to reach all units. As mentioned, the software is currently available for devices in Mainland China. However, the brand has already initiated beta testing of ColorOS 13 globally last month, indicating that stable updates will soon become available in other regions as well.

While the update should not clear the user data, it is still recommended to create a backup just to be on the safe side. Oppo notes that there are currently many commonly used third-party applications that are not compatible with Android 13. After upgrading to Android 13, third-party applications may not work properly, creating issues such as flashbacks, freezes, black screens, and increased power consumption.

It is worth noting that Oppo’s update speed has been nothing but commendable this year. Considering the brand’s large portfolio of devices, it is impressive how it has managed to roll out the ColorOS 13 update to a majority of them. We can see Oppo catching up with Samsung, which is reputed as the undisputed king of software updates in the industry.
