Garmin Instinct 2X Solar with a bigger screen, solar charging and longer battery life unveiled

Garmin has unveiled its biggest outdoor smartwatch yet, the Instinct 2X Solar. It sports a 50mm dial and weighs 67g. It is a bigger version of the Garmin Instinct 2 Solar and offers an extended battery life thanks to its solar architecture. The Garmin Instinct 2X Solar will operate excellently without requiring charging in sunlit conditions above 50,000 lux. In such scenarios, even with maximum battery GPS mode, the smartwatch does not need recharging.

Garmin Instinct 2X Solar

The Instinct 2X Solar, although bigger, has the same 176 x 176 pixels memory-in-pixel display. The new smartwatch has almost identical features to the Insinct 2 Solar. It however adds a LED flashlight which is absent in the 45mm model. The LED flashlight is capable of emitting light to match your running cadence.

The flashlight is capable of emitting a red safety light that helps the user stay visible to cars and other pedestrians or cyclists. It can alternate between red and white light for greater visibility during nighttime. The smartwatch also comes with improvements in several aspects. A new multi-band GNSS sensor provides positional accuracy in GPS and TracBack modes. There are other selectable workout profiles available with the Garmin Instinct 2X Solar.

The presence of dedicated workout profiles for lots of sports activities including running, swimming, hiking, strength training, and cycling provides an added edge for the Instinct 2X Solar. It offers 10ATM water resistance and a massive 40-day battery life when out of sunlight and uses smartwatch mode. This exceeds the performance of some of the big hitters in the industry like the Apple Watch Ultra (36 hours). In GPS mode, the Garmin Instinct 2X Solar can function for 60 hours in the absence of sunlight.

Garmin Instinct 2X Solar

The Garmin Instinct 2X Solar Tactical Edition with green in place of red LED lighting is also available. It features Stealth and Jumpmaster modes for greater functionality. The Stealth mode enables the user to restrict sharing of GPS data while the jumpmaster mode is designed for skydivers. The Tactical Edition model automatically begins using the barometer and compass when it detects the user has jumped during skydiving. The price of the Instinct 2 is around $450 while the Tactical Edition Instinct 2X Solar could cost $500.

The Instinct 2X Solar smartwatch may be an excellent outdoor gadget. The addition of LED lighting makes the watch well suited for nighttime outdoor sports and other activities. It will also be a great buy due to its rugged and battery-extending solar architecture.

Xiaomi tests improved Location Capabilities on Xiaomi 12T Pro with Qualcomm’s Meter-Level Positioning

Xiaomi 12T Pro was unveiled globally towards the end of last year and recently the smartphone underwent testing for a new feature. Xiaomi and Qualcomm today announced they successfully verified meter-level positioning on the smartphone. This new feature reportedly makes a big difference in how well the Xiaomi 12T Pro performs when it comes to mapping, driving, and other location-based mobile apps. Here are the details.

Meter-Level positioning on Xiaomi 12T Pro

As per the press release, Qualcomm and Xiaomi have successfully tested meter-level positioning in a Xiaomi 12 T Pro device powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 Mobile Platform. This feature is said to improve the overall smartphone user experience in various scenarios, such as while using Maps, driving, and other mobile applications.

It could bring improved accuracy when using ridesharing apps, making it easier for both drivers and passengers to identify pick-up locations. Meter-Level positioning also enhances fitness apps, allowing users to track their outdoor activities such as cycling and jogging more effectively.

Xiaomi 12T Pro

Furthermore, in-vehicle real-time navigation apps can benefit from increased lane-level accuracy, providing drivers with more detailed maps and accurate directions. Other applications that could benefit from this feature include augmented reality games and location-based social media apps.

The new feature that improves the location capabilities was made possible by the collaboration between Qualcomm and Trimble. Qualcomm’s Meter-Level Positioning for Mobile and Trimble RTX correction were used in combination to achieve an “unprecedented level of accuracy in a commercial smartphone.”

Poco F5 Pro might not launch in India after all

Indian fans of the Poco F series smartphones are eagerly awaiting the next iteration after the success of the Poco F4. While the brand did not launch a Pro variant of the F4 last year, it is expected that the F5 series will bring both vanilla and Pro models this year.

Redmi

According to leaks and certifications, the Poco F5 will likely be a rebranded Redmi Note 12 Turbo, while the Poco F5 Pro will be a rebranded Redmi K60. The Bureau of Indian Standards has already approved the former device, while the Pro model has appeared on the IMEI database. These certifications suggest that at least the vanilla version will launch in India. However, a recent leak by renowned tipster Kacper Skrzypek casts doubt on the release of the Poco F5 Pro in India.

Kacper Skrzypek claims that the Poco F5 Pro is unlikely to launch in India because there are no ROMs (MIUI builds) for an Indian device variant. He notes that there are no India ROMs for the codename “mondrian,” which is used for the Redmi K60 Chinese model and POCO F5 Pro global model. Poco separates Indian models from its global models, including the software, as India gets a distinct MIUI build. However, it’s important to note that this information is not conclusive evidence that the smartphone will not launch in India.

Therefore, readers are advised to take this information with a grain of salt and wait for further updates.

Nokia’s Patent Crusade: After Oppo and OnePlus, Vivo Faces Sales Ban in Germany

Following Nokia’s successful campaign to halt Oppo and OnePlus smartphone sales in Germany, Vivo is now facing the same fate. Last week, Nokia obtained a preliminary injunction from the court, prohibiting the sale of Vivo smartphones in Germany if they incorporate technologies patented by Nokia. The injunction comes in the wake of failed negotiations regarding licensing fees for certain Nokia patents. Here are the details…

Nokia’s Patent Crusade: After Oppo and OnePlus, Vivo Faces Sales Ban in Germany

Nokia claims that the courts decision validates Vivo’s infringement of the company’s patents, which cover a variety of mobile and 5G technologies. Vivo refused to pay the licensing fees demanded by Nokia after a previously existing agreement between the two companies expired in December 2021.

Vivo

Nokia says that it took “every possible step to reach an out-of-court settlement and initiate negotiations on extending the license” before initiating legal proceedings against Vivo in May 2021. Currently, according to the Finnish company, the distribution of Vivo smartphones using Nokia’s patented technologies without the payment of appropriate licensing fees is illegal.

Vivo Prepares for the Worst

In an initial statement published on its website, Vivo announced that it would appeal the decision, asserting that Nokia has not licensed its patents on fair terms. Nokia has already countered this claim, stating that the Mannheim District Court confirmed that the company had acted fairly. Vivo has begun preparations for a possible sales stoppage in Germany, while still hoping for a resolution with Nokia on “fair” terms.

Although there have been rumors that OnePlus and Oppo may withdraw from the German market later this year due to the ongoing patent dispute with Nokia, Vivo has preemptively denied such speculation. The company intends to maintain a long-term presence in Germany, and existing customers will continue to receive full service support.

Oppo, OnePlus, and Vivo are all part of the same Chinese conglomerate, BBK Electronics. While Oppo and Vivo operate as independent brands under the BBK umbrella, Vivo’s presence in Germany has been comparatively limited, with fewer products and significantly less marketing effort. Consequently, the number of models potentially affected by a sales ban would be relatively small.

Huawei opposes Nokia from selling its stake in TD Tech Joint Venture

Huawei has come out in strong opposition against Nokia’s plan to sell its stake in the Joint Venture (JV) TD Tech. TD Tech was established in 2005 as a Joint venture between Nokia and Huawei with Nokia holding a 51% stake in the JV. The company has set up R&D centers in Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu with more than 1200 employees and has three business sectors: public networks, private networks, and security terminals.

However, now Nokia is planning to sell its majority stake in the JV to New East New Materials (NENM), a Chinese chemical product company. Nokia lined up New East Materials, a maker of ink and adhesive products, to acquire its 51 percent stake for $305 million.

source: Nokia

In response to this announcement, Huawei has issued a warning to exercise its “right of first refusal” in relation to TD Tech, which would involve either purchasing Nokia’s shares before any other potential buyer or ending its licensing agreement with the company and its subsidiaries. Additionally, Huawei also has the option to liquidate its stake in TD Tech.

Why is Huawei against the sale?

Huawei has released an official statement clarifying that it has no intention to collaborate with New East New Materials in the operation of TD Tech. The company emphasized that its joint venture with Nokia was established based on a strategic partnership, leveraging the technical expertise, sales, and service capabilities of both organizations and NENM a chemical and adhesive company lacks the technical know-how and capacity to provide the same strategic potential as Nokia.

Huawei further stated that though Nokia has the legal authority to sell its stake in TD Tech, any potential buyer must possess comparable strategic capabilities as a prerequisite for maintaining the current level of collaboration between the two companies.

According to Yang Guang, a senior principal analyst of Omdia, Huawei is strongly opposed to the sale as the company needs to maintain the JV to withstand the increasing US sanctions and curbs.

He further said that although TD Tech was a JV between Huawei and Nokia, the former basically controlled the company as it supplied the major technology to TD Tech, and the management is also made of former Huawei employees, who focus on product solutions based on Huawei products but fine-tuned for the industry market.

Why is Nokia pressing for the sale?

Nokia has vowed to push through the sale and try to unload its 51% stake in TD Tech. The company said that though TD Tech was a legacy JV, over the years the company operations had changed and there are no more operational activities between TD Tech and Nokia.

Nokia further said that TD Tech is not aligned with its strategic goal of being a B2B technology innovation leader and hence Nokia has agreed to sell its ownership in the joint venture to New East Materials.

However, experts state that Nokia essentially is trying to distance itself from potential legal complications that could arise due to the ongoing US sanctions on China and especially Huawei which is a strong target of the US government.

The comparison reveals that the Galaxy S23 Ultra takes around 40 minutes longer to charge wirelessly from 1-100% than the Galaxy S22 Ultra, while the Galaxy S23 Plus takes about 15 minutes longer, and the Galaxy S23 takes approximately 16 minutes longer. This is surprising, given Samsung’s emphasis on speed and performance on its latest smartphones.

One possible explanation for this slower charging speed is Samsung’s concern about heat dissipation. The company’s documentation states that the Galaxy S23 includes “an enhanced level of heat dissipation” to prevent overheating. Nevertheless, this does not fully explain why the last generation flagship, featuring the same battery size and wireless charging tech as the Galaxy S23 Ultra, can recharge faster than the newer model at the same charging speed.

It’s worth noting that 15W wireless charging is not the fastest standard available, and other brands like OnePlus have been offering 50W wireless charging for a couple of years now. It’s important to note that Samsung’s 15W fast wireless charging is only available on the company’s own chargers, which means that customers using third-party charging pads may experience slower charging speeds. In fact, even if the third-party charger supports 15W charging, the speeds may be capped at 10W due to compatibility issues.

Overall, this discovery may be disappointing for Samsung Galaxy S23 owners who were expecting faster wireless charging speeds. However, it’s important to keep in mind that heat dissipation is a critical issue for modern-day phone makers, and Samsung may have taken this decision to prioritize the safety and longevity of its flagship phones.

Samsung Struggles to Find a Solution to Ongoing Camera Issue on Galaxy S23 Series

Samsung continues to make waves in the smartphone market with its Galaxy S23 series. The flagship Android devices often make headlines with their innovative features. However, not everything is going as the South Korean tech giant would like. The software issues that many Android phones experience from time to time have finally caught up with the Galaxy S23 series as well. Here are the details…

Galaxy S23 camera may have a hardware issue that Samsung hasn’t addressed yet

A Reddit user brought attention to an issue with their Galaxy S23, where photos taken in landscape mode exhibit a blurry and smudged spot on the left side, with a similar soft spot appearing on the top when capturing images in portrait mode. This problem affects image quality and renders photos of documents unusable. The issue persists across different types of shots, and software updates have failed to rectify the problem.

Further reports revealed that many other Galaxy S23 and S23+ users are facing the same issue. Users from many different parts of the world express that they have similar problems. One user who sent their device to Samsung’s official service center reported that technicians recognized the problem but were unable to resolve it.

Despite some users having their camera sensors replaced, the problem remains unresolved. Samsung’s service centers lack non-faulty camera sensors for replacement, leaving customers frustrated. The issue appears to be software-related (However, it is not possible to say for sure without the company’s explanation.) and affects both the Galaxy S23 and some Galaxy S22 models, though the Galaxy S23 Ultra remains unaffected.

With a growing number of Galaxy S23 and S23+ users reporting this camera issue, it’s time for Samsung to take the matter seriously and provide a proper resolution. Ignoring the problem is not an option for a brand that prides itself on delivering reliable and well-tested flagship smartphones.
