Xiaomi Promises the Flagship Smartphone Experience on the Upcoming Affordable Redmi Note 12 Turbo

Xiaomi is ready to announce its highly anticipated Redmi Note 12 Turbo series in China this week on March 28, as the mid-range Android smartphone market heats up in 2023. This time around, the smartphone brand is bold enough to claim that the upcoming affordable Redmi Note 12 Turbo will offer the “flagship smartphone experience” at a much lower price than its competitors.

Xiaomi Group President and Redmi General Manager, Lu Weibing, posted on his Chinese social media Weibo recently, announcing that the company is serious about bringing the flagship-level performance and smartphone experience to a wider and more price-conscious audience.

Alongside the announcement, the President also shared that the Redmi Note 12 Turbo series will bring much beloved features such as the 3.5mm headphone jack, the infrared IR sensor, multifunctional NFC support, and support for the latest Bluetooth 5.3. These user beloved features are typically omitted in flagships that cost almost 5 times as much as the price range that the Redmi Note 12 Turbo is competing. Other notable additions include Dolby Atmos certified stereo speakers and an X-axis linear vibration motor normally found on more expensive smartphones.

The Redmi Note 12 Turbo is also the world’s first smartphone to be equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 processor, which brings significant improvements to performance and power consumption compared to its predecessor the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. In fact, the 7+ Gen 2 is comparable to the flagship Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC launched last year.

Yamaha TW-E3B TWS Earbuds Unboxing & Hands-On

At present, Yamaha sells TW-E3B, TW-E5B, TW-ES5A, and TW-E7B TWS earbuds in India. Each of them is aimed at different price segments. The TW-E3B variant is the most affordable model; it was priced at Rs 8,490 (~$103) when it debuted in June 2022. Currently, it is selling for Rs 6,490 (~$79) on Amazon. One of the attractive features that the TW-E3B offers is the audio clarity. In addition, it offers a good battery life. Here is our unboxing and hands-on post about the Yamaha TW-E3B TWS earbuds.

Yamaha TW-E3B TWS earbuds: What’s in the box?

Yamaha TW-E3B TWS earbuds
Yamaha TW-E3B TWS earbuds

The Yamaha TW-E3B TWS earbuds retail package includes the following items:

  • Yamaha TW-E3B TWS earbuds with charging case
  • Eartips (extra small / small / medium / large)
  • USB-A to USB-C cable
  • Quick Start Guide

Design and Comfort

The Yamaha TW-E3B comes in multiple colors, such as black, pink, blue (limited edition), and purple (limited edition). The black variant, of the TW-E3B, that we received has a simple yet sleek design and a matte finish. Since it is the most affordable pair of Yamaha TWS earbuds, the build quality does not feel premium, but is good enough for the price it offers. The case makes a nice snappy sound when it is closed. Each earbud weighs 5.0 grammes, and the entire thing with the case weighs 45 grams.

The TW-E3B has four LED indicators on the front, and the back has a USB-C port. The Yamaha logo can be seen on the lid of the case. Both earbuds have a microphone, a physical function key with the Yamaha logo on it, and an LED indicator for pairing. The underside of each earbud has a charging connector, which can be connected to the charging pins available inside the case. Both earbuds offer an IPX5 rating, which makes them ideal for use during workouts. As far as comfort is concerned, the earbuds fit well inside the ear canals thanks to the different-sized eartips they come with.

Connectivity and Controls

The TW-E3B comes with support for Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, which brings support for audio codecs, such as SBC, AAC, and aptX. In order to establish a connection between the TW-E3B and a phone for the first time, one needs to take out the right earbuds and long press the button available on it. This will let the TW-E3B enter pairing mode, and its LED indicator will flash blue. Next, one needs to scan for new Bluetooth devices on a phone and look for “Yamaha TW-E3B R.” The LED indicator will then glow in purple, meaning it is ready for use. Next, take out the left earbud from the case, and it will show a prompt on the phone to connect with “Yamaha TW-E3B L,” this way the left earbud can be connected. Once the device has been paired with a smartphone, the earbuds will instantly connect to the phone when they are taken out of the case.

The specifications sheet for the TW-E3B on the official website mentions that it does not support gaming mode or active noise cancellation. However, it offers a feature called Listening Care. According to Yamaha, “Listening Care provides a more sophisticated solution by using a 4-band parametric equalizer (PEQ) to apply precise settings at each level in order to produce the best tonal balance at every volume. This means that you (and earbud guy) don’t have to crank up the volume to hear the bass drops or the cymbal crashes.”  Here is how the function key on each earbud work.

ControlsFunctions
Single press on right / left earbudPlay / Pause | Answer / End call
Long press on right / left on an incoming callReject call
Double press on right earbudIncrease volume
Double press on left earbudDecrease volume
Triple press on right / left earbudAccess Google Assistant / Siri
Long press on right earbud until here a beepNext Song
Long press on left earbud until here a beepPrevious Song
Long press on right earbudPower on / off
Long press on left earbudPower on / off

I sometimes prefer to listen to music using only one earbud. Some mid-tier earbuds offer smart wear detection, which can automatically play / pause music when an earbud is removed from the ear. This feature is unavailable on the TW-E3B. However, in its absence, the Yamaha TW-E3B offers a nifty feature that allows the user to turn off / on to the left or right by long pressing the function key.

Most earbuds with smart wear detection require users to remove one of the earbuds to play / pause. On such TWS devices, once the earbud is removed, it should be placed inside the case to make sure you don’t lose it. However, on the TW-E3B, one can continue wearing the turned off earbud and turn it on whenever required. Another thing that I liked about the TW-E3B is that it provides a way to adjust the volume through the earbuds.

Sound Output and Battery Life

There is a dedicated app called “Headphones Controller” available on Apple App Store and Google Play Store. It shows the battery status of the earbuds, offers a toggle to turn on Listening Care, and an auto power off timer. It also lets users search for the latest firmware for the TW-E3B. The Listening Care adjusts the frequency balance, offering rich sound quality playback even at a low volume.

The TW-E3B will be liked by those who prefer to listen to every detail. The 6mm audio drivers onboard produce crisp audio output. The bass is good enough and does not appear overoptimized. One of the impressive features of the TW-E3B is that the audio sounds very clear when played at low volume.

The built-in microphone is good enough for voice memos and voice assistants. As far as call quality is concerned, it is unable to cut down noise in a busy environment since it lacks ANC. However, it is still usable for calls in scenarios with less background noise.

Coming to the battery life of the TW-E3B, the moment the earbuds are worn, they will sound one of the following battery status messages.

  • Battery High: plenty of charge remaining
  • Battery Medium: moderate charge remaining
  • Battery Low: small amount of charge remaining

In addition, if the battery is low, the LED indicator on the earbuds flashes three times in red. As claimed by the brand, the TW-E3B takes around two hours to achieve a full charge. The official page of the device states that the earbuds can last for up to 6 hours once they are fully charged. With the charging case, it can last for up to 24 hours. The charging case promises up to three charging cycles.

I used the TW-E3B for a couple of weeks. Since I used them for an hour or two each time, the earbuds could easily last for 3 to 4 hours. Hence, it required me to charge the TW-E3B once a week. I can conclude that the audio output and battery life are the strengths of the Yamaha TW-E3B.

Price and Availability

The Yamaha TW-E3B and TW-E5B debuted last year for Rs 8,490 (~$103) and Rs 14,200 (~$17), respectively. At the time of writing this review, the TW-E3B was priced at Rs 6,490 (~$79) It can be purchased through Amazon India and the Yamaha Music Store website. To conclude, the TW-E3B, which is powered by Yamaha’s decades of experience in acoustic and electric technologies, offers an impressive audio experience in the affordable price segment.

Disclaimer:  All of the opinions in this Yamaha TW-E3B TWS earbuds unboxing and hands-on post are mine and based on my own experiences. There has been no editorial input from Yamaha.

Microsoft threatens to restrict Bing search data access to AI chatbot competitors

Microsoft is reportedly cracking down on Bing-powered search engines that are using its search data to power their AI chatbots. According to a report from Bloomberg, the tech giant has informed two unnamed search engines that if they continue to use Bing’s search data with their AI tools, Microsoft will restrict their access to the data altogether. This move by Microsoft is seen as an attempt to make its search data exclusive to Bing’s chatbot, which is powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4 language model and can answer questions, create summaries, generate code, and write social media posts.

While Microsoft licenses out Bing’s search data to several search engines, including DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, and You.com, it apparently draws the line at using its data in AI chatbots, which it views as a violation of its contract. Sources close to the situation claim that Microsoft may choose to terminate its agreements with the search engines accused of misusing the information.

Microsoft

Although it’s unclear which search engines Bloomberg is referring to in its report, it’s worth noting that DuckDuckGo recently launched a tool called DuckAssist that provides AI-generated summaries for certain searches, while You.com and Neeva both offer AI-powered tools that generate annotated summaries and provide answers to users’ questions. Microsoft’s decision to restrict Bing’s search data for use in AI chatbots could impact the functionality and capabilities of these search engines’ chatbots.

This crackdown by Microsoft is significant because it highlights the increasing importance of AI chatbots in the search engine landscape. With more companies like Google introducing their own takes on OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot, there is a growing demand for access to high-quality search data to power these tools. Microsoft’s decision to restrict access to its search data could potentially put it at a competitive advantage, as it seeks to make its chatbot stand out in a crowded marketplace.

This move could also have implications for the wider AI industry. It remains to be seen how this situation will unfold, but it underscores the importance of access to high-quality data in the development of AI technologies.

Redmi may mass-produce 300W super-fast charging technology

According to the popular tipster Digital Chat Station, Xiaomi is reportedly planning to mass-produce the 300W super-fast charging technology that can fully charge a smartphone in just five minutes. The company recently showcased a modified version of the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ that achieved this feat, and it seems that the technology will be applied to mass-produced models in the near future.

Redmi 300W fast-charging

The Redmi Note 12 Pro+ modified version charges its 4100mAh battery to nearly 50% in just two minutes and fully charges in just five minutes using the 300W super-fast charging technology. The technology achieves a peak power of 290W, which is close to the 300W level.

The Redmi 300W super-fast charging technology is the result of innovative design and new materials, from the charger to the phone’s charging architecture to the battery. The charger uses the fourth-generation integrated GaN (gallium nitride) solution, which maintains the same size as Xiaomi’s previous 210W charger but with a 43% increase in power, achieving a power density of 2.31W/cm³.

Redmi 300W fast-charging

The charging architecture incorporates a customized 6:2 charge pump chip with a maximum conversion efficiency of 98%. This solves the problem of large current heating in the charging input path and reduces charging temperature rise from the source. Multiple charge pumps are arranged in a decentralized layout to effectively avoid concentrated heat generation, allowing for sustained peak power for more than 2 minutes.

The Redmi 300W super-fast charging technology is a breakthrough in fast charging technology, and it could change the way we use smartphones. With the ability to charge a smartphone fully in just five minutes, users will no longer have to worry about running out of battery while on the go. This technology could also have implications for other devices, such as laptops and electric vehicles.

The launch date and which specific model will have this feature is currently unknown, but with the successful demonstration of the modified Redmi Note 12 Pro+, it is only a matter of time before we see this technology in mass-produced smartphones.

Redmi Note 12 Turbo Roundup: Specs, Design, and Expected Pricing

Redmi’s latest Note 12 series was introduced in China towards the end of last year, and subsequently, it made its debut in other global markets including. The lineup currently includes three phones and all of them offer a good bounce for the ounce. Soon, Redmi will top the series off with a new model called Note 12 Turbo.

The new smartphone is confirmed to debut in China on March 28 with a new Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 SoC under the hood. Although the official launch is yet to happen, several teasers and leaks have already revealed a good deal about the device. This post compiles all the details that are currently available about the upcoming Redmi Note 12 Turbo.

Redmi Note 12 Turbo launch date-
Redmi Note 12 Turbo

Design and Display

The Redmi Note 12 Turbo is going to bring some serious hardware specs out of the box, but don’t expect it to look all that different from the other phones in the same series. However, there are a few notable changes. Firstly, the company has ditched the large camera housing that’s found on the rest of the Redmi Note 12 lineup, opting for individual lenses on the Note 12 Turbo instead.

The handset has been teased in its white and silver finish but it will also be offered in a black colorway as well. The back of the phone features three camera cutouts, including a prominent 64MP main lens. In addition, the Redmi Note 12 Turbo boasts dual speakers, a USB-C port, and what appears to be an IR blaster at the top. Interestingly, the phone also comes with a headphone jack, a feature that’s becoming increasingly rare in modern smartphones.

Redmi Note 12 Turbo display

Redmi Note 12 Turbo will give the iPhone 14 a run for its money with its thin bezels on the front. According to the company, the phone will sport a 2.2 mm chin, which is 0.2 mm thinner than the iPhone 14. The side bezels will be 1.42 mm thick, while the top bezel will measure 1.95 mm. Although the bezels aren’t exactly uniform, the phone’s side bezels are even thinner than the iPhone 14’s 2.4 mm ones. Oh, and there’s a small hole-punch in the display too.

Further, the display on the device will likely measure 6.67 inches. Redmi has confirmed that the OLED panel will support 68.7 billion colors, 100 percent DCI-P3 color gamut, 1920Hz PWM Dimming, and HDR10+ certification. It has been claimed to offer a 93.45 percent screen-to-body ratio.

Specifications

Redmi Note 12 Turbo will arrive as a mid-range smartphone but will rival some of the flagship phones with its specification. Its major highlight is going to be the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2, which is not a high-end SoC but has been reported to offer performance similar to that of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. Qualcomm says the new chip will offer substantial performance and power efficiency improvements over the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1.

The chipset has its main Kryo CPU core clocked at 2.91GHz and the whole 1+3+4 CPU architecture is claimed to deliver over a 50% jump. The processor could be paired with up to 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 1TB of UFS 3.1 storage. It will also boast a vapor chamber cooling system spanning 3,725 mm². On the software front, the Note 12 Turbo will boot MIUI 14 based on Android 13.

As confirmed by its 3C certification, the smartphone will be fueled by a 5,000mAh battery with support for 67W fast charging. We don’t expect to see wireless charging support on the handset.

For photography, the Redmi Note 12 Turbo will feature a triple camera unit on the rear, headlined by a 64MP primary camera with support for optical image stabilization (OIS). It will feature an 8MP ultrawide lens and a 2MP macro shooter on the back. The front may flaunt a 12MP front-facing camera for selfies and video calls.

Expected Pricing

The Redmi Note 12 Turbo is expected to make its debut as a true flagship killer, boasting impressive specs that are likely to give other high-end smartphones a run for their money. What’s more, it’s rumored that the phone will come with a competitive price tag. While there’s no official confirmation yet, rumors suggest the handset will be priced in the range of $350-$400. It is also reported to arrive in the global market but with a different name, likely as the long-anticipated Poco F5.
