The popular OnePlus 6T smartphone is making headlines for its ability to run the open-source OpenHarmony operating system. Recent progress in flashing the device has enabled it to support both Android 13 and OpenHarmony 4.0 in a dual-boot configuration. The A slot runs Android 13, while the B slot runs OpenHarmony 4.0, and users can switch between the two through recovery mode.
A developer named @AlgoIdeas has demonstrated that the OnePlus 6T can run OpenHarmony 3.2 Beta 5 with a Linux 6.1 kernel. The touch screen is fully functional, and the GPU can be used for acceleration.
The porting of the OpenHarmony 4.0 operating system onto the OnePlus 6T is done by using OpenHarmony 3.2 Beta 5 as the basis for the project. The kernel is based on Linux 6.1 and it also supports OpenHarmony’s mainline 5.10 kernel version. This new development means that OnePlus 6T can now run on both the Android and OpenHarmony operating systems.

Other details about the wireless earphones are still not known. Huawei has confirmed it will be launching the FreeBuds 5 in China on March 23 alongside the Huawei P60 series, Mate X3 foldable, and the MatePad 11 (2023). The new hearables should also make it to the global market in the near future.
Oppo has recently filed a new patent application for a folding screen opening and closing structure and electronic equipment. The patent abstract shows that the application provides a touch module and an electronic device system that includes a rather interesting feature – touch components that provide a physical touch operation effect similar to that of a piano key. This could be used to offer a more satisfying and enjoyable user experience for those using devices with folding displays.
As can be seen in the sketch provided with the abstract, the touch component is arranged on the second side of the assembly bracket. It includes a mounting part arranged on the second side of the assembly bracket and a button provided on the side of the mounting part away from the assembly bracket. One end of the button is connected to the installation part, and the other end can be docked with or separated from the installation part. When docked, the button can realize touch operation on the first side of the assembly bracket through the assembly bracket.
In simpler terms, Oppo has come up with a new idea to create a touch module that feels like playing a piano key. It works by having touch components on one side of a bracket, and a button on the other. When you press the button, the touch components give a physical touch experience like pressing a piano key. This will make using electronic devices feel even better and could be especially useful for devices with folding screens.
It is unclear at this stage how Oppo plans to utilize this new technology. It is likely to still be in the research and development phase and may take some time before we see a device with this technology implemented.

Qualcomm’saptX and aptX HD encoders, which allow for high-quality Bluetooth audio, are now free to use on Android devices, thanks to a recent move by the company. Prior to this, device manufacturers had to pay a licensing fee to use the encoders in their devices, with fees as high as $6,000 for a one-time payment alongside per-device fees.
This move means that any developer creating a custom Android-based ROM can now add support for Qualcomm aptX or aptX HD without ripping them from a licensed build. The encoders are now part of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) Apache license and are free to use. While this change may not be significant for the average Android user, it could potentially lead to more devices supporting the hi-fi wireless audio format going forward.
Qualcomm has clarified that while the aptX and aptX HD encoders are now free to use, companies will still have to pay licensing fees to use other aspects of aptX, such as the decoder on the receiving end of the Bluetooth connection. Additionally, it is still the responsibility of ROM developers to use these now-open-source encoders from AOSP.
This development is a significant step forward for the mobile industry, which has seen a significant improvement in Bluetooth audio quality over the past decade but has also faced criticism for getting rid of the headphone jack. With the aptX and aptX HD encoders now freely available, more devices could potentially support high-clarity codecs, making the listening experience even better for users. It will be interesting to see how this move by Qualcomm impacts the industry going forward, and whether we see more devices adopting the hi-fi wireless audio format in the coming years.

BGMI, the Indian exclusive version of the popular battle royale PUBG was abruptly banned and subsequently removed from the Google Play Store as well as the Apple App Store. Initially, the reasons behind the game’s removal remained undisclosed. However, RTI later confirmed that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) officially banned BGMI following requests made by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
Now, according to a News18 report, Krafton recently held discussions with officials from the Indian government who have recommended certain modifications to lift the ban on BGMI for a limited period of time. These modifications include restricting playtime to address addiction issues, removing blood from the game due to concerns about its violent nature, and making internal and server changes to prevent cyber threats, including protecting user data from potential profiling and cyber-attacks.
The Indian government has imposed restrictions on the hours of gameplay to address addiction issues, as there have been incidents of suicides and murders due to high addiction to the game. According to the report, players will no longer be able to play the game 24 hours a day, seven days a week. However, the specific number of hours for the playtime restriction has not been specified.
The removal of blood from the game is in response to concerns about its violent nature and its potential impact on young players. The game’s color scheme will reportedly be changed to support yellow and green blood, similar to the version currently available in China (Peacekeeper Elite).
In addition, the game has been accused of addiction, with reports of players becoming obsessed with it and committing violent acts. Concerns have also been raised about user data being harvested for profiling, which could result in targeted cyber-attacks on Indian users. The government has asked Krafton to make relevant internal and server changes to address these concerns.
In summary, the recommended modifications aim to ensure a safer and healthier gaming experience for Indian users. It remains to be seen how Krafton will implement these changes, and whether they will be sufficient to lift the ban on BGMI.

Microsoft is apparently looking to rival Google and Apple in the mobile application ecosystem market. The company is working on its very own mobile app store that will take on the Apple and Google’s dominance.
Phil Spencer, the head of the American tech giant told Financial Times that the DMA (European Union’s Digital Markets Act) will help the brand in building and launching its mobile application store. For those unaware, the new act will come into effect in 2024. under this law, Apple and Google will now be required to allow users to download and run third party digital contents on their devices, which are outside of their respective app stores.
The senior executive added that “We want to be able to offer Xbox and content from ours and our third party partners on any screen anyone wants to play. Today we can’t do that on mobile devices, but we want to build the ecosystem that we believe will happen when those devices become open.” Interestingly enough, the company has recently acquired a number of game studios. In other words, its new acquisitions of known names like Activision Blizzard and the move of entering the mobile app store market clearly signals an expansion into this segment.
Thanks to the great success of Activision’s mobile titles like Call of Duty Mobile and Candy Crush Saga, we can expect this new Microsoft app store to see a great start. These two names alone are some of the biggest games in Google’s and Apple’s stores, so Microsoft will undoubtedly leverage their success for its own app store.
