BGMI might return to India if game limits playtime, removes gore: Report

BGMI, the Indian exclusive version of the popular battle royale PUBG was abruptly banned and subsequently removed from the Google Play Store as well as the Apple App Store. Initially, the reasons behind the game’s removal remained undisclosed. However, RTI later confirmed that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) officially banned BGMI following requests made by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Now, according to a News18 report, Krafton recently held discussions with officials from the Indian government who have recommended certain modifications to lift the ban on BGMI for a limited period of time. These modifications include restricting playtime to address addiction issues, removing blood from the game due to concerns about its violent nature, and making internal and server changes to prevent cyber threats, including protecting user data from potential profiling and cyber-attacks.

The Indian government has imposed restrictions on the hours of gameplay to address addiction issues, as there have been incidents of suicides and murders due to high addiction to the game. According to the report, players will no longer be able to play the game 24 hours a day, seven days a week. However, the specific number of hours for the playtime restriction has not been specified.

The removal of blood from the game is in response to concerns about its violent nature and its potential impact on young players. The game’s color scheme will reportedly be changed to support yellow and green blood, similar to the version currently available in China (Peacekeeper Elite).

In addition, the game has been accused of addiction, with reports of players becoming obsessed with it and committing violent acts. Concerns have also been raised about user data being harvested for profiling, which could result in targeted cyber-attacks on Indian users. The government has asked Krafton to make relevant internal and server changes to address these concerns.

In summary, the recommended modifications aim to ensure a safer and healthier gaming experience for Indian users. It remains to be seen how Krafton will implement these changes, and whether they will be sufficient to lift the ban on BGMI.

Microsoft to Rival Google & Apple with a Mobile App Store of its own

Microsoft is apparently looking to rival Google and Apple in the mobile application ecosystem market. The company is working on its very own mobile app store that will take on the Apple and Google’s dominance.

Phil Spencer, the head of the American tech giant told Financial Times that the DMA (European Union’s Digital Markets Act) will help the brand in building and launching its mobile application store. For those unaware, the new act will come into effect in 2024. under this law, Apple and Google will now be required to allow users to download and run third party digital contents on their devices, which are outside of their respective app stores.

Microsoft

The senior executive added that “We want to be able to offer Xbox and content from ours and our third party partners on any screen anyone wants to play. Today we can’t do that on mobile devices, but we want to build the ecosystem that we believe will happen when those devices become open.” Interestingly enough, the company has recently acquired a number of game studios. In other words, its new acquisitions of known names like Activision Blizzard and the move of entering the mobile app store market clearly signals an expansion into this segment.

Thanks to the great success of Activision’s mobile titles like Call of Duty Mobile and Candy Crush Saga, we can expect this new Microsoft app store to see a great start. These two names alone are some of the biggest games in Google’s and Apple’s stores, so Microsoft will undoubtedly leverage their success for its own app store.

Chinese Video Game Companies Embrace AI-Generated Content

ChatGPT continues to take the internet by storm. Artificial intelligence, which has been utilized for tasks such as writing code, books, and screenplays, has assisted people and institutions in numerous ways. Now, it appears that artificial intelligence is also making its mark on the gaming industry. Chinese video game companies are eagerly integrating artificial intelligence-generated content (AIGC) into their operations. Several developers and publishers, including NetEase and miHoYo, have expressed interest in hiring AIGC talent or investing in the technology. Here are the details…

Chinese Video Game Companies Embrace AI-Generated Content

Over a dozen gaming companies have advertised for AIGC-related roles on online job platforms like Liepin.com and Boss Zhipin. Positions range from engineers and researchers to art designers, with salaries reaching up to 1.1 million yuan per year. Chinese gaming companies such as TapTap, Giant Network, and Kunlun Tech are joining the AI bandwagon, and some have already begun applying AIGC to their products.

For example, NetEase plans to integrate a ChatGPT-like service into its upcoming mobile game, Justice Online. Though Tencent, NetEase, and miHoYo had established AI labs as early as 2016, the ChatGPT phenomenon has accelerated efforts to implement AIGC in the gaming industry. AIGC is expected to greatly impact game development, design, animation production, and more. However, analysts maintain that AI cannot replace the creative aspect of human thinking.

As gaming companies increasingly adopt AI technologies, some content creators are concerned about potential job losses. Dash Huang Yimeng, founder and chairman of XD Inc, revealed that two gaming studios recently replaced outsourced art design and translation teams with AI.Despite these concerns, industry experts predict that AIGC will continue to gain traction in the gaming world, with companies eager to capitalize on the latest AI advancements.

Amazon is being sued for Biometric Tracking at Go stores in New York

Amazon is apparently being sued over allegations of biometric tracking in New York from its Go stores. The company is facing a proposed class action lawsuit that is accusing the company of failing to inform customers at its cashierless Go stores.

For those unaware, New York city passed a law in 2021 that required businesses to post signs of whether they are collecting customer’s biometric information. This includes the likes of facial scans and fingerprints. Amazon Go stores basically let’s shoppers choose whatever product hey want off of shelves and simply walk out. All one requires is to scan a code from the Amazon app with a connected credit card.

Amazon

Thus, the e-commerce giant is now being sued by Alfredo Alberto Rodriguez Perez who is arguing that the Go stores are making great use of the customer’s biometric data “by canning [their palms] to identify them and by applying computer vision, deep learning algorithms, and sensor fusion that measure the shape and size of each customer’s body to identify customers, track where they move in the stores, and determine what they have purchased.”

The lawsuit document argues that the Go stores only put up signs regarding this biometric tracking process over a year after the lay was officially passed. Some Go stores also utilize biometric data via Amazon One. This basically uses palm based identity and initiates payment service. When signing up for this service, the company claims that it will not be collecting their biometrics. However, “Amazon Go stores do collect biometric identifier information on every single customer, including information on the size and shape of every customers body,” as per the complaint.

Previously, it has been reported that the smartphone will offer a 2K resolution and feature the aging Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC under the hood. However, the device will likely be using a 4G version of the chipset as Huawei has been barred from using 5G technology. It could pack a 4,800mAh battery with 66W fast charging support.

The rear camera module of the device will likely be led by a 50MP Sony IMX766 camera, assisted by a Sony IMX688 ultra-wide lens, and an IMX351 periscope zoom camera. Huawei Mate X3 will run the company’s own HarmonyOS 3 software out of the box.
