Is 4G Dead in India? 5G Smartphones Take the Lead

India is expected to see 5G smartphone shipments surpass 4G smartphone shipments by the end of 2023, according to Counterpoint’s India Market Outlook. The report predicts that cumulative 5G smartphone shipments in India will reach the 100 million mark in Q2 2023.

5G Smartphone Shipments in India on Expect to Exceed 4G Shipments by End of 2023

Driving this growth is the expanding presence of 5G smartphones in lower price bands, as well as the rollout of 5G networks in the latter half of 2022. In fact, the share of 5G smartphones in lower price bands is expected to increase from 4% in 2021 to 14% in 2022, and reach 30% in 2023. The availability of cheaper 5G chipsets from Qualcomm and MediaTek has enabled original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to launch more 5G devices in the lower price segment, while the commercial rollout of 5G services has also increased demand.

However, the growth of 5G in India has been limited by component supply shortages, inflation, geopolitical conflicts, and other macroeconomic issues, which have delayed 5G device launches in the budget segment. OEMs have responded by dropping or downgrading certain features, such as display quality or fast charging, in order to keep the cost of 5G devices low. This has had an impact on consumer demand for 5G within this price tier. In addition, the limited availability of 5G networks has also affected demand.

Despite these challenges, the outlook for 5G in India is positive. These constraints are expected to ease by the end of 2023, leading to the mass adoption of 5G. The better availability of 5G networks in major areas is also expected to drive growth in 5G smartphone shipments, which are estimated to increase by 62% year-on-year in 2023.

Sony doesn’t consider Xbox Game Pass as its rival: Report

A new report has revealed that Sony is apparently not worried about the Xbox Game Pass from Microsoft. The company reportedly doesn’t even view the Xbox Game Pass as competition in the market.

According to sources close to the matter, Jim Ryan, the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, has expressed views that hint at the company not viewing the Xbox Game Pass as a rival. On the other hand, the Japanese tech giant has implied concern over Microsoft’s recent acquisition of the Activision Blizzard gaming studio. As per one source, the senior executive has expressed his views during an employee Q&A session that was held earlier this month where Ryan talked about market competition.

Sony

When asked about the Xbox Game Pass, Jim Ryan reportedly stated that “When we consider Game Pass, it seems to be getting lower [Game Pass numbers]. When we consider Game Pass, we’ve sold more PS5’s in two years than they have gathered subscribers and they’ve been doing that for 6-7 years.” He further added that “We’re just shy of 50 million subscribers and they are in the low 20s, but there’s more work to do to grow that number.”

Interestingly enough, Ryan’s supposed internal statement seems slightly contradicting considering the company is battling Microsoft’s proposed plans on acquiring Activision Blizzard, which is a known name in the gaming industry. The Sony official had told Reuters that the move is “bad for competition, bad for the gaming industry, and bad for gamers themselves” despite Microsoft claiming that “This deal will benefit gamers, developers, and the industry as we seek to bring more games to more people.”

Lenovo SmartPaper tablet leaked, could be Yoga Paper E-Ink’s global variant

Earlier today (30th December 2022), there was a series of new leak that revealed the renders of a number of upcoming Lenovo products. One of these devices is the new SmartPaper, which appears to be a rebranded version of an existing tablet from the company.

The leaked images were shared by known tipster Evan Blass (@evleaks). He shared multiple images of the Chinese tech giant’s new tablet. Looking at these images, it appears that the brand is planning on launching the Yoga Paper E-Ink tablet globally. The design and form factor of the SmartPaper and Yoga Paper tablet are quite similar, although, the former lacks the distinct “YOGA” branding on the rear panel. In other words, SmartPaper could be a rebranded Yoga Paper model for the global market.

We can also see that the SmartPaper tablet will also feature a stylus. The leak from the tipster only shared the name of the tablet as well as the images, but there was no specifications revealed in this leak. However, based on the already available Yoga Paper, we can expect the upcoming SmartPaper to also sport a tall 10.3 inch e-ink display panel. For those unaware, this panel basically offers users an experience like reading and writing on an actual paper. It is also quite comfortable to look at and it is further helped by the automatic color temperature and brightness adjustments.

The stylus offered with the tablet does not required to be charged or paired. It has a low latency of 23ms and a pressure sensitivity of 4096. The device also supports nine types of smart pens, which can enable an adjustable handwriting style and even support side edge writing to simulate effects of real handwriting. The Yoga Paper was launched in China for around 430 US Dollars, so we can expect a sub 500 US Dollar price tag for the global variant as well.

Apple to launch an 11.1 inch & 13 inch OLED iPad Pro models in 2024

Apple is apparently working on two new iPad Pro models that will feature OLED displays. The two new variants of the iPad Pro will launch with two different sizes. So here are all the details about the upcoming tablets.

As per a new report, the Cupertino based giant is planning on launching an 11.1 inch and 13 inch OLED iPad Pro model. Furthermore, the brand will supposedly launch these two OLED iPad Pros during the first quarter of 2024. So, we still have more than a year till we see these two tablets be released in the market. The news was shared by known display analyst Ross Young. While reports for OLED iPads are not new, this is the first time we’ve heard of the 11.1 inch and 13 inch size variants for OLED iPad Pros.

Apple

Additionally, these news models will also feature smaller bezels that surround the display. In other words, the overall dimensions of the new iPad Pros will not change owing to the smaller bezels. Back in October, Apple had launched refreshed variants of the 11 inch and 12.9 inch iPad Pros thanks to the addition of the newer M2 chipset. So the next major upgrade is likely with the iPad Pros receiving OLED panels.

Although, it is unclear if the iPhone maker is planning on releasing new and smaller refreshed models next year. Young had previously claimed that Apple is also planning on releasing a 14.1 inch iPad Pro model in 2023, but has now stated that the company has dropped this plan. Keep in mind that this information is still unconfirmed, so take this news with a pinch of salt and stick around for more updates regarding this matter.

OnePlus 11 will come with World’s first bionic vibration motor & custom graphics engine for 120FPS gaming

On January 4th, OnePlus will officially unveil the OnePlus 11, the brand’s upcoming flagship smartphone, in China. The phone’s specifications are already known, and the brand teased us with photographs of the design. The company said this week that the AAC Technology-developed bionic vibration sensor motor will be used for the first time in a phone.

OnePlus

According to OnePlus, this vibration motor will be the most powerful and largest in an Android phone, with a volume greater than 600mm³.

In comparison to the iPhone 14 Pro, the OnePlus 11 offers 1.4 steady state vibration/Grms, which is 17% more. According to OnePlus, the start time and stop time are both 16 milliseconds and 12 milliseconds, respectively, just like the iPhone. The vibration bandwidth is 77Hz, which is better than the iPhone’s 66Hz and the 37Hz of other Android flagships.

According to the company, the bionic vibration motor in the OnePlus 11 provides off-state vibration/Gop of 4.2 as opposed to the 2.2 offered by other vibration motors used in flagship phones, making it 91% better.

The OnePlus 11 is the first device in the market to use full-phase magnetic circuit technology. The vibration is stronger and crisper, the company claims, with more magnetic sources and more driving energy. Even well-known third-party programs like the Happy Xiaoxiaole game and the Baidu keyboard have improved vibration quality, according to OnePlus.

The Super Graphics Engine, which allows for high frame rates and native image quality, is also said to be included on the OnePlus 11, making it the first phone in the world to usher in a new era of mobile gaming. According to the company, the phone would give up to 120fps with the optimization, regardless of the frame rate that the original game supports.

A specialized rendering processor, software algorithms, game development engines, and other software and hardware synergies help to achieve this. According to the business, with low power consumption, the frame rate and image quality can be significantly enhanced, surpassing the game’s original experience.

OnePlus has also claimed that after playing League of Legends Mobile for an hour on the OnePlus 11, the maximum temperature doesn’t exceed 43° C, and it maintains an average of 119.8 FPS.

Vivo X90 Pro Global Version visits Geekbench and Wireless Power Consortium ahead of Launch

Last month, Vivo debuted the X90 series of flagship smartphones in its home country China. Since then, multiple rumors of the upcoming global launch have surfaced, with the most notable one stating that it could take place on January 31. With the supposed launch almost a month away, the global variant of the Vivo X90 Pro has been spotted on Geekbench and Wireless Power Consortium certification websites.

Starting off with the Geekbench listing, the database reveals that the X90 Pro global variant will carry the model number V2219. The listing also indicates the presence of an octa-core processor with a configuration of 1 + 3 + 4 cores and a peak frequency of 3.05GHz. The Vivo X90 series smartphone is listed as having an inbuilt Mali G715 Immortalis MC11 GPU. This demonstrates that, like its Chinese version, the Vivo X90 Pro global variant will be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9200 chipset.

The device visited Geekbench with 12GB of RAM. However, we may anticipate that Vivo will also release it with 8GB of RAM. The smartphone will ship with Android 13 already installed. As for the benchmark results, The single-core round of the Geekbench 5 test yielded 1376 points for the Vivo X90 Pro. In contrast, the score in the multi-core round was 4327 points.

The Wireless Power Consortium database now includes information about the upcoming Vivo X90 Pro. The listing indicates that 11W was the maximum wireless power achieved during the test. The listings don’t reveal anything else but these. The Vivo X90 Pro’s features and specs are fully known, though, as the smartphone has already been released in China.
