Qualcomm Teases Next-Gen Oryon CPU

The past few days have been busy with news about Windows on Arm. After Apple’s success with M-series processors, both Qualcomm and MediaTek want a share of the pie. Qualcomm, which has been operating in this field for a long time and is more ambitious, made the first announcement of its new processor. The company has announced that its upcoming custom Windows on Arm silicon cores will be called Oryon.

Qualcomm announces ‘Oryon’ next-gen ARM CPU

At Snapdragon Technology Summit 2022, Qualcomm announced a name for its custom Arm CPU called Oryon. Unfortunately the company didn’t offer any details but we have some knowledge. First of all, unlike MediaTek, these processors will be flagship, not entry-level. There will even be models that can compete with Apple’s M-series custom Arm processors.

Qualcomm has long invested in Windows on ARM. Having made several unsuccessful attempts so far, the company is determined to change course. In fact, they bought Nuvia for $1.4 billion a while ago. Nuvia has been working on ARM architectures for a long time, and they might have the experience Qualcomm needs to compete with Apple.

Unfortunately, the Windows-compatible Qualcomm processors currently on the market are directly based on ARM’s architecture. The company wants to make some more customizable products with Nuvia’s help. If they are successful, it is possible that they will manufacture processors just as powerful as Apple’s.

Products using the new Qualcomm Orion-based chips are expected to hit the shelves in 2024. Still, companies need to act quickly. Apple is currently widening the gap between the M series and its competitors. Within a year, the company is expected to introduce processors such as the M2 Pro and M3.

MediaTek Sets Its Sights On The Windows On ARM PC Market

Smartphone processors using ARM architecture are getting better and better every day. In fact, they have recently become powerful enough to defy computers. In particular, Apple has launched very powerful laptop and PC models with the M series processors. The company’s success convinced other chip manufacturers to enter the ARM PC market. MediaTek, one of the manufacturers in question, has set its sights on the Windows on ARM PC market.

MediaTek still plans to enter the Windows on ARM PC market

MediaTek, one of the most popular processor manufacturers in the world, continues its leadership in the smartphone market. However, the company wants to carry its success to the PC market. At an event hosted by the company, future plans were revealed. One of the MediaTek executives said that they see a $40 billion opportunity for the PC market.

MediaTek Kompanio Proceccors

The first target of MediaTek will be the Chromebook market. The company recently launched the new Kompanio 520 and 528, entry-level chipsets for Chromebooks. Both processors stand out with their efficiency and being sufficient for daily use. Unfortunately, the details of the tech giant’s future plans are unknown.

Still, MediaTek vice president Vince Hu said, “In CPU and GPU we are having to make some bigger investments as a foundational capability. Based on this sentence, it can be said that the company has serious goals for the Windows on ARM market.

Also, MediaTek will design improved CPUs and GPUs in-house rather than acquire them from third-party manufacturers as Qualcomm did. The new Kompanio 520 and 528, entry-level chipsets for Chromebooks, have been released today. MediaTek’s PC operations will be led by Adam King, MediaTek’s vice president and general manager of customer computing. King previously worked at Intel for ten years and held key positions.

MIUI 14 Teased To Be Lightweight

Xiaomi unveiled MIUI 13 in late December 2021. It was announced at the Xiaomi 12 series event. Therefore, MIUI 14 is also rumored to debut alongside the Xiaomi 13 series in the coming weeks.

Earlier today, the head of MIUI officially teased the arrival of MIUI 14. He said a few things about Xiaomi’s upcoming software, which we find to be interesting. Let’s go through his statement.

MIUI 14 Teaser

Jin Fan is a Product Director at Xiaomi. He is also the Head of MIUI Experience. He is not known for posting regularly on Weibo.

But a few hours back, he surprised his followers with an interesting post. In this latest post on Weibo, he writes that his team has worked hard over the past year on developing MIUI 14.

He goes on that the next generation of Xioami’s mobile software will be unveiled soon. But unfortunately, he doesn’t say when.

Talking about the interesting bit, Jin Fan says that one of the goals of his team is to make MIUI 14 the most streamlined and lightweight flagship mobile phone system. This suggests that MIUI will be getting a design overhaul with the forthcoming release.

We already reported in late July that MIUI 14 will bring a new design language. But it’s good to hear directly from the company.

Anyway, we are not sure how lightweight the software will be. MIUI is notorious for being resource hungry on budget smartphones. Hopefully, Xiaomi addresses this with the next release.

Also, most importantly, Xiaomi is the only major Chinese smartphone brand lacking in software updates. While Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus, and Realme have delivered Android 13 update to multiple devices, Xiaomi has managed to do the same for only Xiaomi 12 Pro as of writing this article.

We have been hoping Xiaomi to fix these issues for the last two years. But sadly, it is yet to happen. Perhaps, MIUI 14 could be a game-changer.

Apple AirPods Pro Can Be Used as a Cheap Hearing Aid: Report

A new report has revealed an interesting functionality regarding the Apple AirPods Pro hearables. A study has found that the company’s truly wireless earbuds can serve as a cheaper alternative to hearing aids.

The new study was published in the iScience journal and basically focuses on the “Live Listen” function on the Cupertino based giant AirPods models and some of its Beats earbuds as well. For those unaware, this feature on Apple branded hearables basically lets your iPhone act as a microphone, which then relays enhanced audio the the user’s AirPods earbuds. Keep in mind that this feature isn’t made with the intention of helping people that suffer from a hearing loss issue and require a hearing aid.

Apple

Rather, it was made to filter out certain sounds in noisy situations for those with normal hearing. At the moment, hearing aids can range anywhere between 1,000 US Dollars to 10,000 US Dollars in the US alone. But researchers at Taipei Veterans General Hospital have found that Apple’s AirPods Pro model can surprisingly work well as an affordable hearing aid, in comparison to actual hearing aids. In the study, the researchers uses the 2nd Gen AirPods and first gen AirPods Pro, which was paired with the iPhone XS Max.

The hearables was pitted again both the top of the line OTICON Opn 1, which costs 10,000 US Dollars and the Bernafon’s $1,500 MD1 hearing device. The results with 21 participants with different degree of hearing loss found that the AirPods Pro ranked high in the list of hearing aids as well. Ranking between the two dedicated hearing aid devices. But while it can serve the function as a hearing aid alternative, it is only a temporary solution and not a true alternative to hearing aids.

Now, the South Korean tech giant has also launched its own special edition inspired by the game, with the game’s character “Ganyu” being the primary theme. India May Force Apple to Adopt USB-C on iPhones

USB-C is getting more and more popular day by day. Almost all Android phones, modern laptops, charging adapters, and even game controllers use this port. While the technology world is slowly starting to use a single standard port, Apple continues to resist. The company insists on using the Lightning port on iPhone models that sell millions of units annually. But that’s changing; regulators are forcing Apple to use USB-C on the iPhone.

India May Force Apple to Ditch the Lightning Port

The European Union recently passed a law that forced Apple to use USB-C on iPhones sold in the EU. It seems that India is working on a similar law, following in the footsteps of the EU. Government officials are preparing a bill to make USB-C mandatory on all smartphones, tablets and laptops. Considering that the population of India is almost 1.4 billion, no company, including Apple, has a chance other than to comply with this rule.

USB-C and Lightning charging cable

In a government press release, Rohit Kumar Singh, secretary of Food and Public Distribution, Ministry of Consumer Affairs of India, said: “Broad consensus emerged among stakeholders on adoption of USB Type – C as a charging port for electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc Further, it was deliberate that a different charging port may be adopted for feature phones.”

Although India’s new bill is significant, it does not seem to change Apple’s plans. According to analysts and leaksters, the tech giant is working on an iPhone with a USB-C port. Ming-Chi Kuo claims that all iPhone 15 models will abandon the Lightning port in favor of USB-C. Yet Apple, by being Apple, will only add fast data transfer to Pro and Pro Max. However, for now, this information does not go beyond the claim.
