Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 vs Xiaomi Mix Fold 2: Specs Comparison

Samsung is definitely the king of the foldable phone niche: there is no brand that can compete at the moment. Its foldable reached the 4th generation and there is no company that arrived at this point. But several Chinese manufacturers released their foldable phones and they are perfectly able to compete with the latest ones launched by the Korean giant. A few days ago, Samsung launched the brand new Galaxy Z Fold4 which debuted in the global market. Xiaomi on its end came up with the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, and it is another flagship foldable phone with incredible specifications. At least for now, this device is not global, but while waiting for an eventual global launch, we can give you the first conclusions. Here is a comparison between the main specifications of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 and the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2.

Design

Samsung made a lot of progress with the hinges of its foldable phones, but even if we exclude that, the design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is more convincing. Indeed, it is a lot more compact than the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, and given the success of the OPPO Find N, it is kinda clear that people prefer foldable phones able to become very compact while folded. It also looks like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 has a better build quality. It is waterproof with the IPX8 certification and it comes with an aluminum frame with tougher drop and scratch resistance compared to the previous generation. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 has wider displays, but it is bigger and chunkier, even though it is thinner while unfolded. So do you prefer a bigger display or a more compact foldable phone?

Display

As already mentioned, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 has wider displays, but what about the quality and the features? Well, the foldable display of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is more interesting. It is a 7.6-inch panel with AMOLED technology, a 120 Hz refresh rate, a better hinge, and the HDR10+ certification. Last but not least, it supports the S Pen for handwriting and drawing to behave like a real Galaxy Note. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is all but disappointing: it has a wider 8.02-inch panel with OLED technology, the LTPO 2.0 technology enabling an adaptive refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz, one billion colors, Dolby Vision support, and the HDR10+ certification. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 wins if we talk about external display, thanks to a 6.56-inch AMOLED panel sporting a Full HD+ resolution and a 120 Hz refresh rate.

Specs & Software

With these two devices, you should get the same level of performance because they have the same hardware components. They are fueled by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 mobile platform built with a 4 nm production process and with an octa-core architecture composed of a Cortex X2 CPU running at a max frequency of 3.19 GHz, three Cortex A710 CPUs running at 2.75 GHz, and four Cortex A510 CPUs running at 1.8 GHz, as well as an Adreno 730 GPU. The chip is paired with up to 12 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of UFS 3.1 internal storage. Note that Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 runs Android 12L: a customized version of Android made for devices with big screens. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 has the optimized MIUI Fold based on the original Android 12.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 wins the camera comparison. It has a triple camera setup on the rear side composed of a 50 MP main sensor with OIS, a 10 MP telephoto lens with OIS and 3x optical zoom, and an ultrawide sensor with a 12 MP resolution. It also comes with two front cameras: one on the foldable display with a 10 MP resolution and one on the external display with a 4 MP resolution. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 has a triple rear camera with a 50 MP main sensor including OIS, an 8 MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom, and a 13 MP ultrawide camera with a FOV of 123 degrees, as well as a 20 MP front snapper.

Battery

The battery of the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is slightly bigger with a capacity of 4500 mAh, and it even charges quicker thanks to 67W fast charging. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is the only one to support wireless charging and fast wireless charging.

Price

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is priced at $1699/€1699 globally, while the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is only official for the Chinese market with a starting price of €1450/$1450. Which one would you pick?

Nothing Phone (1) debuted back in July and has remained in the news for both good and bad reasons since then. Recently, a report revealed that Phone (1) will get the Android 13 update in the first half of 2023.

Now, founder Carl Pei has confirmed that Nothing will actually take its sweet time delivering the big update. He further revealed that the Nothing Phone (1) Android 13 beta isn’t coming any soon either. The beta version is scheduled to release “by the end of this year”. Pei says that Nothing does not plan to rush on updates at the cost of user experience.

He also stated that the company has already released three updates for the Phone (1) within a month of launch to improve user experience and fix the camera, battery life, and other issues based on the existing users’ feedback.

Replying to a user, Pei further claimed that Nothing is “looking to create some fun and interesting software experiences.” We expect the company is planning to do something interesting with the glyph interface (the LED lights) on the back.

Nothing Phone (1)

To recall, Nothing promised that Phone (1) will receive three major Android OS updates and 4 years of security patches. The Android 13 update will be the first major update the phone will receive. It will also get the taste of Android 14 and 15 before the company removes it from the support list.

In related news, Nothing recently increased the prices of the Nothing Phone (1) in India by Rs. 1000. As per the company, the main reason behind the price hike is the rising input costs and fluctuations in currency exchange rates. Now, the Nothing Phone (1) has a price tag of Rs. 33,999 for the base 8GB + 128GB storage model.

China: Vivo records 504% YoY growth in premium smartphone segment

Counterpoint Research has published a new report on China’s smartphone market. The report states that the market share of the premium segment ($400 and above) has risen from 31% in Q2 2021 to 33% in Q2 2022. However, the unit sales of premium handsets declined by 10%. Anyway, this segment performed better than the entire market, whose sales dropped by 14%.

vivo X80 Pro review 15

The key highlight of the report is that Vivo has now become the second-largest premium smartphone brand in China by overtaking Huawei. With a 13% market share, the company is only behind Apple, which enjoys a whopping 46% market share.

Another highlight is that Honor has jumped from sixth place to fourth with a 9% market share. It is now ahead of Xiaomi and Oppo. Both these brands have an 8% market share, respectively.

Huawei lost the most market share in a year. Though it is in the third position, its share has reduced to 11% from 19%. Also, Xiaomi lost 1% but everyone else gained.

Unsurprisingly, Apple also led the $1,000 and above price segment by registering a 147% YoY growth. Interestingly, even Samsung grew by 133% YoY in this segment, thanks to its foldables.

But it is Vivo who surprised everyone with its Vivo X80 series smartphones. The brand’s overall premium market share increased by 504% YoY. Honor was its strongest competitor in Q2 2022. It may continue to do so with the decline of Huawei.
