Google Pixel 6a, Pixel 4a Android 13 rollout begins in India

Last month, Google launched the Pixel 6a smartphone in India, making it the only Pixel 6 series device to debut in the country. Now, the Pixel 6a has started receiving the Android 13 update in India, along with the Pixel 4a, an older model officially launched in the country.

The Google Pixel6a
Google Pixel 6a

The update OTA should be popping up on most of the Indian Pixel 6a and Pixel 4a users in the coming days. You can also check for the update manually by navigating to the Settings menu on the Pixel 6a or Pixel 4a, and the latest version of Android should show up in the Software Update section.

The update size varies based on the device. The Pixel 4a update is only 855MB, whereas the Pixel 6a update is 1.06GB. It is recommended to backup all your data before attempting to update your smartphone.

However, considering how buggy the initial rollout of Android 13 on the Pixel 6 series has been so far, it would be better to wait for Google to roll out an iterative version of Android 13 that fixes all of the initial buds and glitches.

iQOO may release more iQOO Z6 series smartphones in the coming days. The brand has already confirmed to debut a new iQOO Z6 and iQOO Z6x in China tomorrow (August 25). Now, according to new findings, there will be two more iQOO Z6 lineup phones, which could release in India next month.

iQOO Z6 Pro 5G

Tipster Paras Guglani (via Pricebaba) has found the existence of two upcoming iQOO smartphones with model numbers Vivo I2205 and Vivo I2208 in a firmware build. These devices are listed as iQOO Z6 Pro SE and iQOO Z6 Lite 5G, respectively.

Additionally, the leaker says that the iQOO Z6 Lite 5G will launch in the second week of September. He suggests that this phone will be a tweaked version of Vivo T1x. It has already been certified by BIS.

For the unaware, the Vivo T1x is a 4G handset powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 SoC. Hence, if Paras is true, then the iQOO Z6 Lite 5G will likely house an entry-level 5G-enabled chipset.

Unfortunately, he does not have details on the iQOO Z6 Pro SE. Anyway, going by the name, we think that it could be a cheaper version of iQOO Z6 Pro.

With the introduction of these two models, the number of iQOO Z6 series smartphones will rise to five in India. Currently, these three devices are on sale: iQOO Z6 44W, iQOO Z6 5G, and iQOO Z6 Pro 5G.

Apple officially confirms delayed release of the new iPadOS 16 stable version

A couple of months back, Apple officially announced the new versions of its operating systems for different types of devices, including iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS Ventura, tvOS 16, and watchOS 9.

The company is expected to roll out the stable versions of the new operating systems next month when it officially launches the next-generation iPhone 14 series. However, the iPadOS 16 won’t be released next month.

Apple has confirmed that the iPadOS 16 won’t be getting a public release until after the iOS 16 for smartphones starts being rolled out to the users. In a statement to TechCrunch, the company said: “We have the flexibility to deliver iPadOS on its own schedule. This Fall, iPadOS will ship after iOS, as version 16.1 in a free software update.”

So far, the Cupertino-based tech giant has released the iOS and iPadOS together, but there was always a possibility of Apple changing the release schedule for the iPadOS ever since the software was split out of iOS into a separate entity few years back.

The confirmation about the delayed rollout of the new iPadOS comes amid rumors of this happening as the company is expected to host a separate product launch event for the new entry-level iPad as well as the iPad Pro in October. Typically, Apple announces the new iPad models along with the iPhone models in September.

There are also concerns about some of the new features of the iPadOS that were announced when the software was unveiled. Many users have complained about some of the new features, including the Stage Manager for multitasking, urging Apple to delay the stable version rollout until it’s fixed.

OnePlus 10T durability test failure – Company responds

OnePlus recently launched the OnePlus 10T in the global market, and as per usual, the device was put through popular Youtuber JerryRigEverything‘s durability test. As we already know, the device failed the bend test and snapped in half, just like the OnePlus 10 Pro.

OnePlus

We could imagine this has been quite a PR nightmare for OnePlus as the test has questioned the device’s structural durability. Now, the brand has finally put out a statement addressing the issue.

OnePlus said, “The OnePlus 10T meets or exceeds all of OnePlus’ extensive durability testing procedures, this includes a pressure test where the device is suspended while weight is applied to its center on both its front and back. The OnePlus 10T has an enhanced structure engineering design and can bear over 45kg of external force in this test at OnePlus’ lab.”

“When designing, engineering, and manufacturing OnePlus devices, we ensure they not only offer a design that is beautiful and burdenless but is also durable so they can withstand everyday usage,” the Chinese brand added.

Going by these statements, it appears that OnePlus is still not ready to admit any flaw in the new camera design which has been at the epicenter of these breaks. It is worth pointing out that JerryRigEverything’s bend test is meant to demonstrate extreme conditions and the daily user will likely not be bending their smartphones with such force.

However, it is quite clear that OnePlus is behind its competitors when it comes to structural durability. Hopefully, the brand fixes these issues with its next flagship series of smartphones. Till then, we advise OnePlus 10T and 10 Pro users to use their devices with a back cover on.

Huawei Mate 50 series tipped to feature Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 4G

Earlier this week, Huawei confirmed that it would be launching the Mate 50 series of smartphones on Sept. 6 in China. Reports have revealed that the lineup will include as many as four models. A leak by Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station has revealed the name of the processor, which will drive the Mate 50 series.

The Mate 50 lineup is rumored to include four models, such as the Mate 50e, Mate 50, Mate 50 Pro, and Mate 50 RS Edition. Reports have claimed that the Mate 50e will have the Snapdragon 778G SoC, the Mate 50 will feature the Snapdragon 888, and the Mate 50 Pro and RS Edition will have the Kirin 9000S. However, the new leak suggests that the Mate lineup will feature a new Snapdragon processor.

Huawei Logo MWC 2019

According to the tipster, the Mate 50 series is powered by a Snapdragon chipset that has an SM8425 part number and a “Waipio LTE” codename. To recall, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 have SM8450 and SM8475 part numbers, respectively.

The SD8G1 and SD8+G1 are 5G-enabled processors, whereas the SM-84250 appears to be the 4G edition of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. So, the information that has been shared suggests that the Mate 50 series will have the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 4G.

The Mate 50e, which appears to be an affordable model, may not feature the SD8G1 4G. Hence, it seems that the other models in the lineup may feature the new chip. The Mate 50 series is expected to offer up to a 120Hz OLED display and run on HarmonyOS 3.0. The lineup will not support 5G connectivity. Reports have claimed that third-party manufacturers have made 5G-enabled phone cases, which can enable 5G connectivity on the Mate 50 lineup.

Design

At first glance, it is very hard to distinguish the Realme Pad from the Motorola Moto Tab G62 because their designs are very similar and even their dimensions. But if you dig deeper, you will find out that the Realme Pad is actually thinner and lighter, as well as slightly more compact. Both the tablets are built with an aluminum unibody design composed of aluminum back and an aluminum frame, but the Motorola is the only one with a water repellent body. Not that it matters so much on a tablet, but it might turn out to be useful in a few scenarios. These tablets come with a single camera on the rear side and very narrow bezels around the display, even though they are very affordable. The Realme Pad wins the design comparison just because it is thinner and lighter.

Display

You should not expect great image quality from the displays of these tablets. They come with an average IPS panel, nothing special, they do not even have a high refresh rate. The image quality is more or less at the same level, with a Full HD+ resolution of 1200 x 2000 pixels. The most important difference is the diagonal: the Motorola Moto Tab G62 has a bigger 10.6-inch display, while the Realme Pad stops at 10.4 inches. Do you prefer a more compact tablet or a bigger display? It is up to you. Unfortunately, there is no fingerprint reader on these devices and you can only unlock them through a code or something similar. But they feature four great stereo speakers, so the audio experience is not bad, and they also sport a 3.5 mm audio jack.

Specs & Software

If you are looking for the most advanced chipset, you should go for the Motorola Moto Tab G62 without thinking twice. It has a way better processor, not only due to its performance but especially thanks to its energy consumption. The Snapdragon 680 by Qualcomm found on this tablet is built with a 6 nm production process and it comes with an octa-core architecture composed of four Kryo 265 Gold custom cores running at a max frequency of 2.4 GHz, and four Kryo 265 Silver custom cores running at 1.9 GHz, as well as an Adreno 610 GPU. The Realme Pad has an inferior Helio G80 chipset by MediaTek built with a 12 nm production process and with an octa-core architecture composed of two Cortex A75 CPUs running at a max frequency of 2 GHz, six Cortex A55 CPUs running at 1.8 GHz, and a Mali G52 MC2 GPU. However, you can get a better memory configuration with the Realme Pad: up to 6 GB of RAM and up to 128 GB of internal storage, while the Motorola Moto Tab G62 gets just 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of native storage. So plot twist: the Realme tablet is more interesting in terms of hardware. But there is another plot twist: the Motorola Moto Tab G62 runs Android 12 out of the box, while the Realme Pad ships with Android 11.

Camera

The Realme Pad and the Motorola Moto Tab G62 are very similar when it comes to camera performance. If you want to make a choice, you need to ask yourself whether you want an ultrawide rear camera or an ultrawide front camera. If your answer is the first, then you should go for the Motorola Moto Tab G62, otherwise, the Realme Pad fits your needs the most. I would personally prefer an ultrawide front camera because on a tablet the front camera is usually more useful than the rear one.

Battery

The Motorola Moto Tab G62 is able to provide a longer battery life simply because it has a bigger battery, with a capacity of 7700 mAh. On the other hand, the Realme Pad features reverse charging allowing you to use it as a power bank to charge other devices.

Price

You need about €160/$160 to purchase the Realme Pad in the base 3/32 GB configuration, while the Motorola Moto Tab G62 costs €200 /$200 in the 4/64 GB configuration. The Motorola wins the comparison due to its better chipset and bigger battery unless you choose the 6/128 GB configuration of the Realme.

Apple, Samsung Q2 shipments continue to grow in North America while market goes downhill: Report

Smartphone demands are shrinking and even the world’s most resilient market is seeing the effects. As per a report, the North American smartphone market has witnessed a 6% decrease in shipments in the second quarter of 2022. Overall shipments fell to 35.4 million units in Q2 2022. However, Samsung and Apple still managed to attain decent growth and further increased their market share.

A report from Canalys says that North American smartphone shipments reached 35.4 million units in the second quarter of 2022, marking a 6% year-on-year (YoY) decline. Reasons behind the decline are said to be economic challenges, high inflation, and poor seasonal demand.

North American Smartphone shipment Q2 2022

Apple was the largest contributor to smartphone shipments and grew by 3%. The company has commanded more than half of the North American region for three consecutive quarters, owing to strong iPhone 13 demand paired with the performance of its entry-level model, the iPhone SE, throughout the entire quarter (3rd Gen). Samsung also witnessed a 4% increase in its shipments thanks to the increasing demand for the S series and low-end A series smartphones.

“Following a rapidly recovered performance in 2021, the tide has turned in the North American smartphone market,” said Canalys Research Analyst Runar Bjørhovde. “A combination of high inflation, decreasing consumer confidence, and an economic slowdown is shrinking demand in North America, which was previously the world’s most resilient market. Vendors are responding quickly to falling demand and are focused on reducing the risk of oversupply as they prepare for new launches in the second half of 2022. Most top vendors matched their shipments from Q2 2021, and the volume decrease was caused by the gap LG left remaining partly unfulfilled.”
