Apple achieves iPhone shipments worth over $50 billion in Q1 2022

Cupertino-based tech giant Apple has reported a massive $50 billion in iPhone shipments for the first quarter of the year. Apple’s iPhone earnings for the first three months of 2022 stood at $50.57 billion, which is a 5.5% improvement from 2021. The current iPhone sales figures are quite remarkable, and Apple CEO, Tim Cook says it was a successful quarter.apple iphone se 2 featured(1)

The surge in iPhone use is not unconnected with “switchers” – previous Android users who have now switched to using an iPhone. The sales numbers could also indicate a growing demand for the iPhone across several global markets. Apple’s expansion of its customer base could also be due to the production of the more affordable iPhone SE 3 model in addition to the flagships. Apple CEO Cook also says that the company grew switchers by a double-digit rate, reflecting consumer confidence that is picking up after a lull.

On the flipside, iPad sales shrank by 2% to $7.65 billion from the previous year. Cook stated that supply chain challenges were the main reason for declines in iPad sales in the quarter. On the whole, however, Apple’s performance in the quarter was much better than expected. Apple’s services arm also saw a jump in revenues for the first quarter, posting a 17.28% improvement from 2021. The total revenue from the services arm stood at $19.82 billion.

According to CEO Cook, Apple will continue to pursue vigorously its focus on innovation in products and services. He says the company is delighted to see a strong customer response to its new products and its pursuit of a carbon-neutral status by 2030. Due to the strong financials, Apple declared a dividend per share of $0.23 and the board has announced it will authorize a $90 billion share buyback.

Snapchat’s Snap unveils the Pixy selfie drone priced at $230

Snap has released its first selfie drone called the Pixy. The Pixy is a pocket-sized gadget that does not require a lengthy setup and can be controlled without a controller. It has four preset flight paths which can be chosen at the press of a button on the device.Snap Pixy selfie drone

The Snap Pixy selfie drone is priced at $230 and it can do a few maneuvers before landing in your hands. The Pixy can follow the user, orbit around or float. It has four rotors aligned with the body within a protective casing. The settings dial of the Pixy is located in the middle of the drone.

For now, there are no hands-on reviews of the Pixy, hence we cannot offer greater details on some aspects like its maximum flight time and lift height. The quality of the device camera is not fully ascertained as well.

Interestingly, in-flight shots captured by Pixy can be transferred directly to Snapchat Memories after the flight. Some effects can also be applied to the snaps including jump cuts and 3D bounce, as well as other additions to the snap.

The rumor about Pixy has been on for several years and it is a great addition to the lineup of accessories on the Snapchat lineup. Last year, it was reported that Snap had made some investments in a robotic company Zero Zero Robotics. It seems the Pixy is the culmination of the collaboration between Snap and the robotics company.Snap Pixy selfie drone

The Snap Pixy is currently in the United States and France for $230. There are no indications whether the device will subsequently be available in other markets. Snap however says that the drone will be available in the two markets while the stock lasts.

OnePlus 10 Pro vs Vivo X80 Pro: Specs Comparison

The Vivo X80 series just hitten the shelves in China with two handsets, including the higher-end Vivo X80 Pro. This year there is no Pro Plus variant and it is rumored to be launched sometime in Q3 2022. That is the reason why the Vivo X80 Pro is not the most advanced flagship out there, and that is also the reason why it is a perfect rival to the OnePlus 10 Pro. While waiting for the launch of the Vivo flagship in the global market, through this comparison between the OnePlus 10 Pro and Vivo X80 Pro, we will tell you the main differences between the spec sheets of these two devices in order to let you understand which one is the best for your actual needs.

Design

The Vivo X80 Pro is more attractive in terms of design because of the materials chosen for its body. This handset comes in three color variants: one with a ceramic back, one with a classic glass back, and one with a vegan leather back. Further, it is waterproof with the IP68 certification. The OnePlus 10 Pro is only available with a glass back and an aluminum frame, and it does not offer any certification against dust and water. Both the phones come with a curved screen, but the punch holes are placed in different positions. Note that the OnePlus 10 Pro is slightly more compact thanks to the presence of a smaller display.

Display

Talking about the displays, the Vivo X80 Pro is a bit more advanced. It features the LTPO 3.0 technology instead of the older LTPO 2.0, improving the energy consumption with an adaptive refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz. Further, the display includes an ultrasonic fingerprint reader that is more accurate than optical fingerprint scanners like the one of the OnePlus flagship. For the rest, these displays are pretty much the same: they are curved AMOLED panels with one billion colors, a Quad HD+ resolution, and the HDR10+ certification. Note that the OnePlus 10 Pro features better stereo speakers for an improved audio experience.

Specs & Software

These two phones are at the same level if we consider the hardware department. They are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 mobile platform paired with up to 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 512 GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage. But the Vivo X80 Pro has an additional variant fueled by the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 chipset. According to benchmarks, the Dimensity 9000 actually provides slightly higher performances if compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. The OnePlus 10 Pro runs Android 12 out of the box, customized by ColorOS 12.1 in China (OxygenOS 12 in the global market), which is actually better than the Origin OS customization found on the Vivo X80 Pro.

Camera

If you are looking for the most advanced camera phone, then your choice is the Vivo X80 Pro as it comes with better cameras. It has a 50 MP main sensor with gimbal OIS and laser autofocus, an 8 MP periscope camera with 5x optical zoom, a 12 MP telephoto sensor for portraits with 2x optical zoom, and a 48 MP ultrawide camera. The OnePlus 10 Pro has an inferior 48 MP main camera, it lacks a periscope sensor and replaces it with a telephoto lens with 3.3x optical zoom, and it adds a 50 MP ultrawide camera. While the ultrawide camera is superior to the one of its opponent, the rest of the camera setup loses the battle.

Battery

The OnePlus 10 Pro is equipped with a bigger battery sporting a capacity of 5000 mAh, and this is probably the most important advantage of the OnePlus 10 Pro over the Vivo X80 Pro. The charging technologies are exactly the same: 80W fast wired charging and 50W fast wireless charging.

Price

The OnePlus 10 Pro starts from €700/$739 in China, while the starting price of the Vivo X80 Pro in the country roughly translates into €800/$845. The Vivo X80 Pro wins the comparison thanks to its better cameras, waterproof design, and better display, but the OnePlus 10 Pro has a bigger battery. For the rest, they are very similar.

OnePlus 10 Pro vs Vivo X80 Pro: PRO and CONS

OnePlus 10 Pro

PRO

  • Great stereo speakers

Baidu & Pony.AI get China’s first commercial driverless robotaxi permits

Baidu and Pony.ai are two Chinese companies that have been blazing the trail in their various segments over the years. The two companies have now reached another milestone in China with their acquisition of commercial driverless robotaxi permits. They are the first companies to be issued permits to provide driverless ride-hailing services on open roads in Beijing. Previous permits relate to testing the self-driving vehicles without a safety driver in the vehicle.Baidu Apollo

China has seen a raft of self-driving services in several cities across the country. This is however the first time that any company will be allowed to run a fully driverless service on public roads. The permit however requires a safety operator in the front of the autonomous vehicle, unlike what obtains in California. The new permits to internet giant Baidu and autonomous vehicle company Pony.ai seem to be a further step in the evolution of driverless car-hailing. Both companies will not be collecting payments for the service.Pony.ai autonomous vehicles

Baidu and Pony.ai are currently running commercial robotaxis with a safety driver in the Beijing High-Level Automated Driving Demonstration Area (BJHAD). This is an area of about 60 sq. km with up to 300,000 residents. The two companies have said that the new service will run within the BJHAD. Ten and four driverless vehicles will be deployed for the new service by Baidu and Pony.ai respectively. Baidu already has up to 100 vehicles in its Apollo Go fleet in the area. The time for the service is 10 am-4 pm for Baidu and 9 am-5 pm for Pony.ai. Users can use the respective apps to hail the service and hundreds of drop-off/pickup locations will be on the route.
