Honor CEO supposedly Throws Shade at the Nothing Company, “A Rival Aimed At Apple is Not Just ‘All Talk and No Show'”

Honor is the company that broke away from Huawei to grow its brand to new heights. After the imposed sanctions on Huawei from using Google Play Services on their devices, the Huawei brand has been gradually exiting the international market, providing the opportunity for the newcomers such as Honor to regain market share.

Honor Magic4 Ultimate DXOMark

In a recent interview following the first sale of the Honor Magic 4 in China, Honor’s CEO, Zhao Ming, expressed gratitude to Honor fans for supporting the company in the recent fiscal year, as the company has become the fastest-growing smartphone brand internationally in 2021, and is now the 3rd largest Android smartphone maker in China.

Honor-CEO-Honor-Magic-4-interview
Honor CEO, Zhao Ming at the interview. Source: Honor

In the media interview, Zhao also provided a statistical breakdown of users that had switched over to Honor. Zhao reveals that 60% of current Honor users, switched over from either Huawei or Apple devices. He emphasised that several Chinese smartphone makers keep on harping about competing against Apple. However, those brands’ ambitions are always all talk, and no proper effort is shown that they can be a viable Apple alternative.

He added that what consumers want is the security, reliability, privacy, peace of mind and the customer service experience that Apple provides for its users. “Here at Honor, we aim instead to provide the best all-around aftersales service experience to Honor users. We craft our phones with delicacy and patience, building innovations one by one, to provide a truly flagship experience for our users,” Zhao added.

Honor-Nothing

This statement released by Zhao, seems to be throwing shade at the Nothing company, founded by ex-OnePlus CEO, Carl Pei. Carl Pei broke up with OnePlus back in early 2021 to establish the Nothing company, which recently held its first announcement event in March. In the event, Carl Pei brought back the topic of an Android competitor to the Apple iPhone, as the Nothing company boldly claims its first smartphone is aimed at Apple.

At the end of the interview, Honor CEO, Zhao Ming also reiterates that Honor does not like to overhype its smartphones, as if one continues to overhype each of its smartphone launches, then when the final product reaches the hands of the user, the user will be disappointed with the device as it did not live up to expectations. This situation may lead to the user avoiding the brand in the future, and Zhao mentions that here at Honor, we aim to build brand loyalty, not demolish loyalty.

HONOR Play6T thin and light phone series launch date announced

HONOR today announced that its upcoming Play6T phone series will be launched on April 7th.

According to its filing with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the front of the HONOR Play6T Pro will have a straight screen with a punch-hole for the selfie camera. The edges of the phone will be flat and will retain a 3.5mm headphone jack. The rear has a squarish camera module containing a dual-lens setup — a 48MP primary camera paired with a 2MP macro lens. Upfront, there’s an 8MP selfie shooter.

HONOR Play6T launch date

The phone has a thickness of 7.45mm and weighs just 175g and its display will be a 6.7-inch 120Hz LCD panel with 2388×1080 resolution. Its built-in 4000mAh battery supports 40W wired fast charging.

The Honor Play6T Pro should be available in 8+128GB and 8+256GB variants. It isn’t clear what processor the phone will be equipped with — some say that it will be the Snapdragon 680 while others claim it to be the Dimensity 900. Some even say that it will be the Dimensity 8100 but honestly feels a bit too high-end for the device.

The series seems to be comprised of two models — there’s the HONOR Play6T Pro and then there’s the HONOR Play6T. As usual, both will be launched in China first with a global launch following sometime after, that is, if HONOR indeed decides to make them available globally.

Xiaomi 12 Ultra to come with a ceramic back, leather variant may be offered too

Flagship phone lineups seem to be getting expanded lately with a greater number of variants being launched this year and the last. The Xiaomi 12 series, for example, included not only the Xiaomi 12 Pro, 12, and 12X but is set to soon get a fourth model in the form of the Xiaomi 12 Ultra. This phone has reportedly already hit the mass production stage and may reach consumers by June.

A number of unofficial renders have been making rounds on the internet for a while now but some digital bloggers on Weibo today revealed some new bits about the upcoming phone. According to Digital Chat Station, the new flagship codenamed l1 will continue to use ceramic for its rear and will be sold in white and black colors. Glass options may be present too.

Compared to glass, ceramic is more difficult to mold, has a better texture, and offers greater durability due to improved scratch resistance.

The tipster also stated that while they’re yet to see a leather version of the Xiaomi 12 Ultra, the possibility of a variant with the material cannot be ruled out (via IT Home).

In other respects, the Xiaomi 12 Ultra will be powered by the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chipset with the model number SM8475, based on TSMC’s 4nm process. It will also have a 120Hz QHD OLED display, a 4,900 mAh battery with 120W fast charging support, and a Leica-branded camera module at the rear.

The camera module is arguably one of the most interesting parts of the device and its ginormous module spans across almost the entire top half of the device. This module contains a center-aligned circular camera island with 3 cameras inside.

OPPO K10 series with Dimensity 8000 chips tipped to release this month

OPPO had announced back with the launch of the MediaTek Dimensity 8000 series that the OPPO K10 series will be the first to be equipped with the Dimensity 8000 chip. Today, prominent leakster Digital Chat Station revealed that the upcoming phone lineup will be released this month, sometime after April 5th.

The OPPO K10 series first made an internet appearance early last month and its 3C certification showed that it will support up to 80W fast charging, which is currently both OPPO and OnePlus’s flagship configuration. Accordingly, the K10 series is expected to be an upper-mid-ranger.

oppo k10 dimensity 8000 series

It is speculated that there will be two models in the OPPO K10 series, namely the K10 and the K10 Pro. The K10 will be equipped with the Dimensity 8000, while the K10 Pro will be powered by the more powerful Dimensity 8100.

The Dimensity 8000 series uses TSMC’s 5nm manufacturing process and has an octa-core setup including four A78s and four A55s, with the GPU being a six-core Mali-G610.

A MediaTek official had earlier claimed that the Dimensity 8000 series chips are positioned to be nearly flagship-level but are easier on the battery compared to actual flagship chips. Benchmark-wise, the performance of the Dimensity 8000 series is at the same level as the Snapdragon 888, although it does appear to be more power-efficient.

DDR3 Soon To Be Phased Out in 2022, Following Samsung and SK Hynix Plans to Cease Production

As the electronic devices of today keep getting more technologically advanced year by year, as consumers, we demand more memory and faster speeds for smoother operations across a wide variety of applications. DRAM memory has become an essential electronic component in keeping our devices running smoothly and fast, and there are a lot of RAM options in the market from the latest DDR5 memory to the cheapest DDR3 memory.

Source: Samsung

However, DDR3 seems to be showing its age in the market, as the technology initially launched in 2007 turns 15 years old today in 2022. With that context in mind, several of the world’s largest DRAM suppliers such as Samsung and SK Hynix have come out to announce that the industry is looking to discontinue the production of DDR3 due to dwindling market demands, and higher demands for its DDR4 and DDR5 options instead.

Samsung-DDR3-Memory-RAM
Source: Samsung

According to Digitimes, Samsung has already notified its customers that the company will keep taking orders on DDR3 RAM until the end of 2022 and fulfil these orders by the end of 2023. Popular 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB DDR3 memory options are expected to have production ceased by the end of 2022.

SK Hynix is also reportedly looking forward to phasing out DDR3 SDRAM production, though it is unclear when the company will cease to supply them. The report from Digitimes, also notes that citing industry sources, DRAM maker Micron, on the other hand, has no plans to cease production of DDR3 RAM at the time of publishing.

Although most electronic devices of today have already transitioned over DDR4 or DDR5 memory for DRAM, there is still a relatively large quantity of inexpensive devices like routers that still use DDR3 memory. In addition, older 2nd hand or refurbished early 2010s laptops that are still in circulation in the market still need DDR3 memory for repairs and replacements.

The discontinuation of production could spell a price hike for the inexpensive electronic devices, as manufacturers will now be using the more expensive DDR4 option instead, and that cost of production in the end would be given back to the consumer. On the bright side, technology is finally saying goodbye to the slower DDR3 memory, and providing a faster user experience for all by transitioning to DDR4 and DDR5 in the future.

Ather CEO says EV fires are due to imported battery packs not made for India’s weather

Although fires in electric vehicles due to the battery pack are not unique to India alone, the recent incidence involving an electric two-wheeler has brought the discussion to the fore again. The co-founder and CEO of Ather Energy, Tarun Mehta has said that many of the battery packs for electric vehicles imported into the country were not designed for Indian weather conditions.Pure EV

The recent fire incident involving an e-scooter in Pune was the basis of Mehta’s statement. While there has been a spike in the production and importation of electric vehicles to India, the battery packs are mainly from China. Local EV manufacturers do not have any inputs into the battery packs that are used in these EVs. Most of these battery packs, according to the Ather CEO, are not suitable for the Indian hot weather. Average temperatures on Indian roads can hover above 45 degrees Celsius and this can create overheating of the battery pack.

Tarun Mehta also feels that the demand for high-speed electric scooters in the market could also be contributing to battery overheating issues. Powering a higher grade electric motor with the same battery pack meant for a less-powerful motor induces more thermal load on the battery. This ultimately leads to overheating and vehicle fires. Ather is however investing in the development of battery packs that are well suited for the Indian conditions.

There is a need for regulatory agencies to step up their work to ensure that only suitable battery packs are allowed in the country. There had been several fire incidents involving Okinawa products recently, and the latest incident did not have any fatalities.

AnTuTu top 10 list for March features a MediaTek chip for the first time

While pre-release benchmark scores had favored MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000 over Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (at least on Geekbench), it’s clear from the AnTuTu top 10 list for March that Qualcomm has dominated the charts once more. Eight out of ten devices are powered with the latest Snapdragon flagship, but MediaTek has made quite some strides this year, actually coming in fourth for the first time.

antutu top 10 chart march 2022

The REDMAGIC 7 Pro came in first with a score crossing the 1 million mark with the iQOO 9 series following closely. Number four was the Redmi K50 Pro with the Dimensity 9000 with a score nearly touching 1 million and is accompanied by the OPPO Find X5 Pro in the MediaTek camp.

Aside from the Dimensity 9000 and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, no other chip has made it to the top charts. The Galaxy S22 Ultra with the Exynos 2200 did appear briefly on the February list but has failed to outperform some newer launches.

In the past two years, MediaTek first focused on the low-end and mid-end market where it quickly gained market share, and then moved on to high-end flagships, so as to establish a firm foothold.

The Dimensity 9000 not only adopts the most advanced TSMC 4nm process but also has a unique architectural technology. The CPU is a combination of 1x X2 super core, 3x A710 large cores, and 4x A510 small cores, which is ARM’s latest solution for flagships.

For those not looking for the absolute best in performance, desiring better battery life instead, MediaTek also offers the arguably more stable 5nm-based Dimensity 8100 platform. This one uses the usual 8+8 ARM big.LITTLE architecture and promises a better power to efficiency ratio.

Nothing Another (1), Xiaomi ConfiBoost Tablet, DIZO Nada Watch (1) – April Fools’ Day 2022 highlights

With the beginning of April comes April Fools’ Day which brings along some of the most comical and hilarious pranks from tech companies for the entertainment of the masses, so let’s take a look at what this year’s fools day had in store for us.

Nothing Another (1)

The up-and-coming tech brand teased a picture of their upcoming smartphone via Twitter yesterday, and today, Nothing revealed Another (1) phone, which is, as the name suggests, another run-of-the-mill “oh so boring” smartphone. The company takes a dig at other smartphone makers as Nothing proclaims that its upcoming smartphone dubbed the Nothing Phone (1) will be different from others.

Xiaomi ConfiBoost Tablet

Indian customers and Xiaomi fans alike have been asking the Chinese tech giant to launch a tablet in India. Customers were overjoyed when Xiaomi finally released a teaser of an upcoming tablet coming to the country a few days ago. And tablets they did deliver. The company earlier today launched the ConfiBOOST Tablet which is a pill instead of a tablet computer.

The company says that it will get rid of all your problems, only if you believe.

There is also a link to claim the tablet for free but there is no confirmation if Mi fans were actually able to get their hands on some.

DIZO Nada Watch (1)

DIZO Nada Watch (1)

Now comes one of the most hilarious pranks of the day. The Dizo Nada Watch (1). Taking a direct jab at Nothing, Dizo announces the launch of their 100% transparent watch. Samsung Galaxy F13 appears on Geekbench with Exynos 850 SoC

Last month, Samsung launched the Galaxy F23 5G in India. We termed it an unusual smartphone from the company. Today, yet another Galaxy F series device dubbed Galaxy F13 has been spotted on the website of a popular benchmarking application. However, unlike the former model, this one will be most likely a rebadged phone.

Samsung Galaxy A13 4G
Samsung Galaxy A13

A never-before-heard Samsung smartphone with model number SM-E135F has appeared on Geekbench. Going by its model number, it will go official as Galaxy F13.  Because Samsung phones with E series model numbers feature Galaxy F branding.

Anyway, according to the listing, the handset will house an Exynos 850 SoC and will boot Android 12. The variant that got benchmarked has 4GB RAM, however, there could be a variant with 6GB RAM.

When we look at these specs and the model number, we can clearly notice that the upcoming Galaxy F13 sounds similar to the Galaxy A13. Since the South Korean electronics giant is known for releasing some of its Galaxy A series handsets as Galaxy M and Galaxy F series of devices, we won’t be surprised if that’s the case with SM-E135F.

Having said that, as this is the first time we are hearing about the Galaxy F13, we are not sure when this smartphone will go official. What we can say for certain is that if it makes its way to India, then it will be sold via Flipkart, Samsung.com, and select offline retailers.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 will come with slightly upgraded batteries for the 40 and 44 mm models

Samsung is gearing up to launch a new smartwatch in 2022. The upcoming watch will be the successor of the current-gen Galaxy Watch 4 series which is one of the best smart wearable devices available in the market right now.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

Last week, a report emerged suggesting that the upcoming Galaxy Watch 5 will have a slightly bigger battery at 276mAh capacity compared to the current 247mAh battery on the Galaxy Watch 4.

Now, a new certification published by Safty Korea (via GSMArena) shows that the leaks were indeed accurate. The certifications reveal that the Galaxy Watch5 40 mm (EB-BR900ABY) will have a 276 mAh battery. On the other hand, The larger Watch5 44 mm (EB-BR910ABY) will have a 397 mAh battery, up from 361 mAh on the current generation smartwatch.

Other than that, previous rumors state that Samsung is planning to include some health-related features in the next-gen wearables. These are said to include a sensor to accurately measure the body temperature, helping users identify viral symptoms and treat colds. Although users should get a marginal increase in battery life with the new features turned off.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 is expected to enter the mass production phase in the third quarter of this year. At this time, there’s no information available about the launch timeline or availability of the device, but if we are to go by the previous launches, then the upcoming smartwatches from Samsung could launch sometime around August this year.
