Maserati reveals new luxury EV line, projects 2030 for shift to all-electric lineup

Italian luxury automaker Maserati has unfurled its plans to go all-electric by the turn of the decade. Maserati has also unveiled its electric luxury EV lineup called the Maserati Folgore. The Maserati Gran Turismo sports coupe will be the company’s first EV and the early teasers are indeed mouthwatering.Maserati Gran Turismo EV

The Gran Turismo EV will be an interesting luxury EV that could draw comparisons with the highly successful Levante and some of Maserati’s best-selling models. The company has outlined its plans to transit to all-EV manufacturing by 2030, but by 2025 it hopes to have produced EV versions of its current vehicles.

Although in the words of Maserati CEO, Davide Grasso, the company hopes to phase out sales of internal combustion vehicles by 2030, this would depend on individual markets and customer demands. Grasso feels the impact of the company’s shift to all-electric production will be felt differently in the different markets. He says the move will affect different parts of the world with a different type of speed, depending on how quickly sustainability presented by electric technology is embraced.Maserati Gran Turismo sports coupe

Maserati is positing that it will be the first luxury brand to have transited all its products to EV by 2025, which is barely three years away. It remains to be seen how the company intends to accomplish this goal, given the uncertainty that still surrounds some aspects of the EV manufacturing process. The global chip shortage had a great effect in distorting the outlook of several brands. Among some of the popular luxury brands, the shift to EV manufacture has been quite cautious but Maserati seems on track to achieve its goals.

Samsung CEO apologizes to users over GOS controversy

Earlier this month, Samsung got into hot waters over the GOS performance throttling fiasco. The company was basically found to be artificially limiting the performance of over 10,000 apps through GOS (Game Optimizing Service) including system apps, Google apps, and numerous third-party apps by over 56%. The GOS comes pre-installed in many Samsung smartphones including their latest flagship line, the Galaxy S22 series.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus Green Galaxy S22 Pink Gold

The kicker was that these limitations excluded benchmarking apps, which meant that the devices were showing performance that was actually not representative of real-world performance. As a result, Samsung’s last four flagship smartphones were kicked off the popular benchmarking site, Geekbench.

GOS 3DMark Samsung

After being caught, Samsung quickly acknowledged the issue stating that the GOS is meant to optimize CPU and GPU performance to prevent excessive heating and increase the battery life of smartphones. Following this, the company started rolling out software patches to smartphones affected by the GOS limitations essentially undoing the limitations imposed before.

Jong-Hee Han

Now, at the recent annual Samsung shareholders meeting, the company’s VC and CEO Jong-Hee Han has issued an official apology to Samsung users over the GOS controversy. The chief executive admitted Samsung did not appreciate customer concerns and said Samsung will “listen to customers more closely to prevent such an issue from happening again”.

The update has still not reached all regions but when it does, it’ll be interesting to see how the Samsung Galaxy S22 series, especially the Galaxy S22 Ultra‘s battery performance is impacted, which has previously been praised for offering extraordinary battery life.

Russia & Ukraine are deploying DJI drones for combat duties

Drone maker DJI has been put on the spot concerning the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Both Moscow and Kyiv have deployed substantial numbers of DJI drones in the battle. Although DJI insists that its drones are not for military purposes, they have become a critical fulcrum in the ongoing conflict and even the US Army is also using DJI drones in some ways.DJI

Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister, Mykhalio Fedorov has formally requested from Chinese drone maker, DJI to cut off support to the Kremlin war machine. Specifically, the deputy PM says that Russia was using DJI products to navigate their missiles that had continued to target civilians including women and children. Fedorov raised concerns about DJI’s AeroScope, which is a drone detection tool and Russia is using it to detect Ukraine’s DJI drones from up to 30 miles away.

While the United States and Europe are united against the Russian aggression which has led to a raft of sanctions, Chinese companies like DJI may be walking a tight rope in the conflict. While China has remained non-committal on the crisis, its companies may face a backlash for not doing enough to ensure the war is brought to an end. The deputy PM’s letter to DJI’s CEO Frank Wang calls for DJI to cut off drones in Ukraine that were not purchased or registered in the country. This will help to restrict Russian incursion into Ukraine via DJI drones. Furthermore, Ukraine is requesting that DJI provide additional information on all DJI unmanned aircraft in the country.

There is also some suspicion, though unverified, that DJI may have already taken some actions that prevent Ukrainians from using its drones, amidst reports of technical issues in the country. Even though DJI insists its products are not manufactured for military purposes, they are increasingly being put into such use as exemplified by the current war. The company may need to do more to assure stakeholders that it has not become a tool for aggression and perpetration of war crimes inside Ukraine.

Xiaomi’s Mi Fit app is now known as Zepp Life on the Play Store

The Mi Fit application which provides useful support for Xiaomi’s ecosystem of smart bands and smartwatches is now called the Zepp Life app. This is as a result of the name change that was done by Xiaomi of all products with the Mi pseudonym to transit to another name.Zepp Life

The Zepp pseudonym itself is coming from Amazfit which has now changed its name to Zepp. It is an arm of the Xiaomi brand, specifically the Huami sub-brand. The Amazfit lineup of smartwatches and smart bands were sold as Xiaomi Amazfit, pointing to their Xiaomi origin.

The Mi Fit application which supports the smartwatches and smart bands under the Mi banner will now bear the Zepp Life title while still providing app support for the Mi products already in circulation. The app interface remains the same, while the app name and logo are the main things that have changed in the app. The Mi Fit app will change to the Zepp Life app after a single update. Following the MIUI 13 rollout for the Global variant of the POCO X3 Pro, the Indian variant is now getting the same as well. The update is based on Android 12 and is accompanied by the February 2022 security patch.

Sized 3.1GB, the update has been stated to increase system security along with optimizing some system apps and features, in the changelog.

System

  • ‌Stable MIUI based on Android 12
  • Updated Android Security Patch to February 2022. Increased system security.

More features and improvements

  • ‌New: Apps can be opened as floating windows directly from the sidebar
  • ‌Optimization: Enhanced accessibility support for Phone, Clock, and Weather
  • ‌Optimization: Mind map nodes are more convenient and intuitive now

Aside from the above, the MIUI 13 update for the POCO X3 Pro is fairly boring, with almost nothing new aside from new wallpapers. Some users have observed that the messed-up notification layout has also been finally fixed, but that’s about it.

Do note here that the update is currently only being rolled out to Mi Pilot Testers in India, according to Xiaomiui. If all’s found well with it, then expect a wider rollout within a couple of weeks. Alternatively, you can attempt a manual installation after downloading the ROM zip via this link, but that’s not recommended.

OPPO Find X5 Pro Dimensity Edition launch delayed due to strict Chinese COVID-19 policies

A Dimensity 9000 version of the OPPO Find X5 Pro was scheduled to launch on March 18th as an alternative to the regular model powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. However, with a post on Weibo, OPPO now says that the launch has been postponed to April 1st in light of a fresh spike in COVID-19 cases in China.

“On the premise of strictly complying with local epidemic prevention and control policies and ensuring the health and safety of the company’s employees, we have adopted emergency plans to solve the problem,” says the post.

Find X5 Pro Review 15

Chinese e-commerce platform JD.com subsequently updated its appointment dates to reflect on the changed plans, with the listing for the phone now showing an April 1st sale date.

Still, the launch postponement shouldn’t bar the OPPO Find X5 Pro Dimensity Edition from becoming the second phone to be powered by the flagship Dimensity 9000 chip, after the Redmi K50 Pro. The Redmi K50 series was launched successfully yesterday.

The OPPO Find X5 Pro Dimensity Edition will be sold in a sole 12GB+256GB variant at a price of 5,799 Yuan, which is around $911. This is cheaper compared to its Snapdragon counterpart, which sells for 5,999 Yuan (around $943) for the same config. Considering the Dimensity 9000 has been found to beat the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in most benchmark tests, it would not be unfair to say that the Dimensity Edition has slightly better value.

Samsung is now rolling out the One UI 4 update based on Android 12 to the Galaxy Tab S7 FE. The rollout is currently limited to the UK but should be expanded to more regions pretty soon.

Carrying firmware version T736BXXU1BVC2, the update includes the February security patch and improves device stability and security (via SamMobile). You can also expect all of the One UI 4 + Android 12 goodies on it like dynamic wallpaper-based theming, new animations, updated widgets, redesigned quick settings, and system apps improvements.

Also, according to Samsung’s documentation, the new security patch fixes more than 50 privacy and security-related vulnerabilities.

If you reside in the UK, you may have already received the update. But if you haven’t, then you can also check for it manually by heading over to Settings > Software update and then downloading and installing it.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE was released in June 2021 with One UI 3.1.1 based on Android 11. It has since then hasn’t received any major update but today’s rollout changes that. The tablet comes with a 12.4-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1600 x 2560. Its Wi-Fi model is powered by the Snapdragon 778G chip while the 5G model gets the Snapdragon 750G.

For photography, you get a single 8MP camera at the rear and a 5MP camera at the front. The battery is sized 10,090mAh with support for 45W fast charging.

realme GT NEO 3 front design revealed: slim bezels, center-aligned punch-hole

The image posted by Xu Qi, president of realme China, shows that the realme GT NEO 3 will have a tiny center-aligned punch-hole for the selfie camera on the front. The front is occupied nearly completely by the display, which is surrounded by very slim bezels, although there’s a slight chin at the bottom.

The executive earlier today posted that the realme GT NEO 3 packs a very sophisticated thermal solution called “Diamond Ice Core Cooling System Max” with a total heat dissipation area of 39606mm² and VC heat dissipation area of 4129mm².

From this, it’s fair to assume that the MediaTek Dimensity 8100 chip under the hood will remain cool even during long gaming sessions. It has also been confirmed that the phone will pack an independent display chip for better performance and lower power consumption.

Last but not least, the realme GT NEO 3 will be the world’s first phone to support 150W light-speed charging, which has been claimed to fill up its battery from 0% to 50% in just 5 minutes.
