Intel and AMD halt all shipments to Russia and Belarus over Ukraine invasion

Due to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, various companies had sought to cut ties with Russia. Now, Intel and AMD have also followed suit and have suspended all shipments to the region following the Russian invasion into Ukraine.

Intel 12th Generation Alder Lake Processor

As of right now, both Team Blue and Team Red have halted all component shipments to Russia and Belarus. This move will affect both the consumer segment and data center operations in the region. Furthermore, losing supply from the two chip giants, Russia will have both its economy and even its networking infrastructure affected as well. Notably, the implications of Intel and AMD cutting off supply could possibly even impact the military sector too, which also relies on certain components manufactured by these two firms.

In an official statement, the American chip giant stated that it “condemns the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and has suspended all shipments to customers in both Russia and Belarus. Our thoughts are with everyone who has been impacted by this war, including the people of Ukraine and the surrounding countries and all those around the world with family, friends and loved ones in the region.”

Intel

Similarly, AMD is also making a similar move and its representatives have confirmed that the company is suspending all of its sales and distribution to Russia and Belarus. Keep in mind that this includes products outside of chipsets as well, like PCs and more. Although, Russia an Belarus aren’t exactly major customers for the companies since they largely rely on their home grown Baikal processors. So it remains to be seen how this move affects the region.

Elon Musk warns that SpaceX’s Starlink system may be targeted in Ukraine

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has shared a warning that there is a high change for its Starlink satellite broadband system to be “targeted” in Ukraine that has been facing an ongoing crisis due to the Russian invasion.

Elon Musk

The warning from the executive arrives after an internet security researched warned that devices that use satellite communications could potentially become “beacons” that Russia could use to target for airstrikes. Thus, Elon Musk tweet read “Important warning: Starlink is the only non Russian communications system still working in some parts of Ukraine, so probability of being targeted is high. Please use with caution.”

Furthermore, he asked users to “turn on Starlink only when needed and place antenna away as far away from people as possible.” He added that users should place “light camouflage over antenna to avoid visual detection.” Last week, the senior SpaceX official announced that the company had activated its services in Ukraine and SpaceX was sending more terminals to the country. This announcement arrived as a response to a Ukraine government official who had requested Musk to provide the nation with additional Starlink stations.

Ukraine Vice Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has since thanked Starlink for “keeping our cities connected and emergency services saving lives!” Although, the government official said that the country needs generators to keep Starlink service online due to Russian attacks on the nation’s infrastructure. This also led Elon Musk to release an update that reduced Starlin’s peak power consumption.

Apple raises Mini LED display orders for upcoming devices in 2022

Apple has apparently raised the production of Mini LED chips and has brought in additional manufacturers into its supply chain to help meet demand for its new orders of Mini LED displays. These new panels are reportedly for the company’s upcoming lineup of devices that are set to launch later this year.

Apple

Recently, the Cupertino based giant has begun using Mini LED panels for some of its products. This includes the Pro Display XDR, the 12.9 inch iPad Pro, and the top end MacBook Pro. Now, the company is expected to further expand the use of Mini LED for its future products that will be launching later in 2022. These new devices may include the likes of the new 11 inch iPad Pro, 27 inch iMac Pro, the new and redesigned MacBook Air, and even another external display as well.

At the moment, Taiwanese supplier Epistar is currently the iPhone maker’s primary supplied of Mini LED chipss. However, since Apple is raising the number of devices that use this display technology, it has sought to bring in additional suppliers. According to DigiTimes, the news arrives from industry sources close to the matter. The new suppliers reportedly include China’s Sanan Optoelectronics, which is significantly undercutting the prices of Apple’s current suppliers.

AppleThe report added that Apple’s demand for Mini LED display is “expected to significantly increase in 2022” following the success of its high end MacBook Pro. So, Epistar is expanding its production facilities in China to ramp up production, starting in the second quarter of 2022. Furthermore, Sanan Optoelectronics is also expected to begin shipments around the same time.

Qualcomm & MediaTek battle for the chip market throne in the US

Earlier this week, we had covered MediaTek’s announcement, in which it claimed that it had become the No 1 chip manufacturer for Android smartphones in the US. However, Qualcomm is challenging this claim, considering a separate report suggests otherwise.

Qualcomm

In recent months, the Taiwanese chipmaker has seen great success across the globe with its chips that target every smartphone segment. Previously, the company was largely popular in the budget category, but it has been eating away at Qualcomm’s mid range segment dominance in recent times. Following a report from known analytics based firm IDC, MediaTek claimed that it became the market leader in the US (Via PCMag).

However, the American chip giant contradicted its claim of being the top chipmaker by providing data from another known analysis firm, Counterpoint Research. It isn’t surprising that both firms arrived at different results considering they use different proprietary data methods of collecting data. Although, both firms agreed that Qualcomm is the top chipmaker for Android phones for the year of 2021, since MediaTek only took the lead in the fourth quarter report from IDC.

Qualcomm-vs-mediatek

According to a MediaTek spokeswoman, “MediaTek trusts IDC and the accuracy of information from its recent report.” The original IDC data showed that the Taiwanese chipmaker saw a stellar performance in Q4 2021 in the US since the top three selling phones in the period featured MediaTek chipsets. This included the Samsung Galaxy A12, Galaxy A32, and the Motorola G Pure. Google shifting to its own proprietary chipset also meant orders lost for Qualcomm.
