EV charging cable theft is fast replacing theft of catalytic converters in the UK

A new wave of criminality seems to be spreading fast across the UK – theft of charging cables of electric vehicles. These cables are critical components in keeping electric vehicles on the road, as they have to be charged regularly, but thieves are now targeting this component which can be sold at a reduced price in the second-hand market or destroying the unit and selling its copper as scrap.Tesla

This new trend adds to what was the major issue – theft of catalytic converters that are put at about 10,000 stolen every year. Industry experts predict that the cost of replacing stolen charging cables could dwarf the estimated £10 million per year expended on catalytic converters replacement.

There had been a steady rise in the acquisition of fully electric vehicles or hybrid models in the UK in recent years. There are currently over 400,000 such vehicles in the UK and there is a conscious and direct effort to phase out combustion-powered vehicles by the turn of this century. Charging cables which are up to 15 feet are filled with copper cables which could be sold as scrap. On the other hand, replacement of stolen cables could cost up to £700 except one is bought from the second-hand market, where it could be priced as low as £200. There is the need to nip the theft of this important unit in the bud and searchlight should be beamed on the seemingly easy market available for such stolen item.

The charging cable can be stolen even while the car is being charged or stolen from the boot. There are some pretty cheap measures to secure the charging cable against theft, but ultimately, it is advisable to charge your car in a safe place away from criminals and overall vigilance.

OnePlus Nord TWS earbuds in development, renders revealed

OnePlus offers some really good quality wireless audio products, be it the OnePlus Buds Pro, the OnePlus Buds Z 2, or the OnePlus Bullets neckband. However, it doesn’t offer anything that can capitalize on the fast-growing budget-friendly TWS earphone markets in countries like India. But that might change soon as the brand is reportedly working on new affordable TWS earphones.

OnePlus Nord TWS earbuds
Image via 91mobiles

According to a 91mobiles report, popular tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer aka OnLeaks has revealed renders of the upcoming OnePlus Nord TWS earbuds.

The tipster notes that the OnePlus Nord TWS earbuds renders are based on the live images of final prototyping stage units. Hence it is hard to show the exact design through renders just yet as there could be a few changes in details on the final product when they officially launch.

The OnePlus Nord TWS earbuds feature a completely different design profile compared to the OnePlus Buds Z lineup or the OnePlus Buds Pro. The earbud is shown to have a broad stem and features a hardware button coated in gold color. The accommodating charging case has a boxy design, which looks similar to what Sony TWS earbuds come in. Both the charging case and earbuds appear to follow the gold and black color scheme. However, the TWS earbuds will likely be available in more color options at launch.

As we’ve seen with the Nord series smartphones that offer quality hardware at a reasonable price, the Nord TWS earbuds will likely offer premium features like Active Noise Cancelling and low latency for gaming with an affordable price tag.

Separately, the brand is also developing a new smartphone codenamed “Oscar”. This smartphone is hinted to be part of the numbered series by the brand which indicates that it could be the vanilla OnePlus 10 which is yet to be announced even though it’s been more than a month since the OnePlus 10 Pro launched.

Xiaomi 12 Lite tipped to be a fusion of Xiaomi CIVI and Xiaomi 12

We have been hearing about the Xiaomi 12 Lite series for a long time. Back in October, the information about the lineup emerged in detail. Four months later, a new report from the same source now gives us an update regarding these devices.

Xiaomi 12 Lite Concept Render
Xiaomi 12 Lite Concept Render | Source: Xiaomiui

Xiaomiui was the one to shed details on the Xiaomi 12 series months ago. The publication is now back again with an update.

It now says that the lineup will only include one phone and it will be exclusively available as a ‘Global’ variant. Previously, it said there will be two models, one of which will be available in all important markets (China, Global, India), while the other will be limited to China.

The source tells that Xiaomi has settled down with the handset codenamed Taoyao whose shortened model number is L9. This device will be similar to the Xiaomi CIVI and Xiaomi 12 series in terms of specs and design respectively.

Xiaomiui has even shared a concept render. But we would advise you to consider it with a pinch of salt. However, the specifications could be accurate.

The smartphone is tipped to come with a 6.55-inch 3D curved OLED display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels. The panel will have support for up to a 120Hz refresh rate and an in-screen fingerprint sensor.

It will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+ SoC or an even more powerful Snapdragon  7xx series chipset. It will house a triple camera setup consisting of a 64MP Samsung ISOCELL GW3 primary sensor, an ultrawide unite, and a macro shooter.

Like any Xiaomi group smartphone, it will feature dual stereo speakers. Finally, the phone will boot MIUI 13 based on Android 12.

As mentioned earlier, this handset was previously planned to release in China as well as India, in addition to ‘Global’ markets. At the same time, a variant of this device codenamed Zijin with a telephoto camera instead of a maco snapper was supposed to release exclusively in China. But Xiaomiui now states that these versions of the phone have been now canceled.

Before leaving the page do let us know your thoughts on the upcoming Xiaomi 12 Lite in the comment section below.

OnePlus Oscar smartphone in the works, possibly the OnePlus 10

Back in January, OnePlus launched its current flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 10 Pro which brought along the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. Now, reports have emerged that OnePlus is working on a new device which could be the vanilla OnePlus 10.

OnePlus 10 Pro review featured 1
OnePlus 10 Pro

According to a 91mobiles report, known tipster Yogesh Brar has revealed that OnePlus is working on a new smartphone codenamed “Oscar.” Brar has also stated that the device will be part of the brand’s numbered series of smartphones ( like the OnePlus 9, 9 Pro, 10 Pro, etc.). There is currently no information available on the device’s specs or name, however, the tipster states that the OnePlus “Oscar” will debut in Q2 2022. Meaning we can expect a new OnePlus launch between April and June.

As the brand has just unveiled the OnePlus 10 Pro smartphone last month, it is safe to assume that this is not the OnePlus 11. However, the company is yet to release the vanilla OnePlus 10 in any market, leading us to believe that the OnePlus “Oscar” might be the codename for the OnePlus 10. We can expect the OnePlus 10 to also be equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC as the company has always released their flagships with the same chipsets. Other than that, we can look at the spec sheet of the OnePlus 10 Pro to get an idea of what to expect from the vanilla variant.

OnePlus 10 Pro Specifications and Features

OnePlus 10 Pro white
OnePlus 10 Pro white edition

The OnePlus 10 Pro features a 6.7-inch LTPO 2.0 AMOLED display with support for variable refresh rates from 1Hz to 120Hz. It offers a screen resolution of 3216 x 1440 pixels, 525 PPI pixel density, 1300 nits peak brightness, 5000000:1 contrast ratio, 20.1:9 aspect ratio, 92.7% screen-to-body ratio, and Gorilla Glass Victus for protection.

It also comes with an under-display fingerprint sensor for added security. Under the hood, the device comes powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, coupled with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 internal storage.

For photography, the phone comes with a 48MP Sony IMX789 primary sensor with OIS, a 50MP Samsung ISOCELL JN1 sensor 150-degree ultra-wide unit, and an 8MP 3.3x telephoto shooter with OIS. On the front side, the device has a 32MP Sony IMX615 snapper for taking selfies and video calling. Some Galaxy S22 Ultra units are having display issues

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is the top-end model in the flagship S22 lineup but it seems the model may not have a smooth sail in the market. There are indications that some early units of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, mainly in regions with the Exynos chip powering the device may be having a display problem.

Multiple reports have surfaced online of new owners of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra in Exynos regions complaining of having display problems on their devices. It seems the problem is that the users observed a weird pixelated horizontal line across the smartphone’s display. The said line seems to be found at about the same position for all the customers who have complained about it at the moment.

Although there are still regions, including the United States where Snapdragon models will be shipped, it is unclear whether the issue is related to the chipset deployed in the units. The fact however is that all the Galaxy S22 Ultra units that are having pixelated line problems are known to be powered by the Exynos 2200 chipset. The Exynos chip came under scrutiny recently when Geekbench performance data showed that Apple’s Bionic chip deployed in the iPhone 11 outperformed the latest Exynos flagship SoC. Although a conclusion cannot be drawn based on performance tests alone, it could point to some issues with the new chip, which has also had issues of overheating reported.

It was also observed that the horizontal line issue was only present when the device was on 1440p mode and switching the screen mode to Vivid provided a fix for the issue. This may point to the possibility that this could be a software issue that could easily be resolved when the regular updates for the device roll in. There has been no official response by Samsung to the issue at this time, but we expect a response or action in a short while.

Huawei Mate 50 series to signal a departure from Kirin chips, will use Snapdragon instead

Huawei Mate 50 series could be powered solely by Snapdragon chips, likely the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, a tipster has revealed.

The information comes from prominent leakster “Chrysanthemum Pictures Fans” who also said that the Snapdragon chip will once again lack 5G capabilities.

Compared to the P50 series, the cameras of the device have been improved. The software was also said to have a good experience and will be based on HarmonyOS 3.0.

Apart from this, barely anything is known about the Huawei Mate 50 flagship but we should be getting our hands on some more information ahead of the launch. The launch has been scheduled for mid-to-late July according to the tipster.

An artist had last month dropped some renders based on what they imagined the Mate 50 to look like, which you can check out from here.

Huawei has long been unable to ship its phones with 5G capabilities due to sanctions from the US. The company is also unable to produce new Kirin chipsets but had managed to maintain an extremely large stock of them. This seems to have finally run out, because of which Huawei is now having to rely on Qualcomm for processor solutions on its newer offerings.

The Huawei Mate 50 series will obviously be launched in China first and a global launch isn’t confirmed yet. Still, judging from past release patterns, the series should make its way through globally a few months later.

Redmi K50 Pro looks like a vivo phone in these renders

The Redmi K50G went official last week as the first smartphone in the Redmi K50 series. The sub-brand of Xiaomi is expected to release the remaining models next month. One of them called Redmi K50 Pro has now appeared in renders revealing its entire design.

The 3D CAD renders of Redmi K50 Pro come from reliable leaker @OnLeaks (Steve Hemmerstoffer). He has partnered with Zoutons.ae to share these pictures.

According to the images, the upcoming Redmi K50 Pro will house a triangular camera module on the rear. It will be somewhat similar to the Xiaomi CIVI with a flat display instead of a curved screen.

This design is clearly inspired by vivo and iQOO. The two brands used to have this very same triangular camera island design on their smartphones up until recently.

It is sad to see Redmi giving up the unique camera layout used on the Redmi K40 series. Even Xiaomi dropped its iconic Mi 11 series camera design with the introduction of the Xiaomi 12 series featuring a design used by OnePlus and realme.

Coming back to the Redmi K50 Pro, Steve says that it will measure 163.2 x 76.2 x 8.7mm in dimensions. The thickness will be 11.4mm if the camera bump is considered.

The volume rocker and the power button will reside on the right side. The left side is shown bare in the renders, however, we think it may have the SIM card slot.

The top of the phone will have a speaker grille and an IR blaster. Whereas, the handset’s bottom will feature a USB Type-C port and another speaker grille.

The front of the device will sport a display with a tiny centered punch-hole, minimal bezels on three sides, and a noticeable chin. Finally, as the power key seems to be too small to house a fingerprint sensor, we think that the biometric sensor could be under the display.

Unfortunately, the exact specs of the handset are a mystery. But we are looking forward to learning about them in the coming days.
