Samsung Galaxy A series could also be eligible for 5 years of updates

Samsung is undoubtedly killing it when it comes to software updates. The company had only last year announced 3 years of OS updates for its S and A series, but surprised everyone recently by extending it to 4 years for the latter. And as if that’s not enough, a new clue shows that the Galaxy A series could be entitled to the same as well — with 4 years of Android updates and 5 years of security updates.

While the official US press release, which most of the global media had referred to, had omitted the A series from the improved update policy, the Samsung Netherlands site suggests otherwise.

Samsung Galaxy A series 5 years updates

The Dutch version of the press release says that the new update policy will also apply to “select devices in the upcoming A series.” If not some weird typo, this would be a total game-changer as almost every other OEM provides no more than merely 2 Android updates for their mid-range devices.

It remains to be seen if the upcoming Galaxy A53 and Galaxy A73 will be eligible for 5 years of updates as well. The duo isn’t the most premium from the A series and may not make the cut considering Samsung has limited the extended software support to select devices from the lineup only.

However, the A5x series has always been one of the most popular devices from Samsung, so we wouldn’t be surprised if the upgraded update policy actually ends up applicable to it as well. Still, we should be getting more clarity on the matter in the coming days, so stay tuned.

vivo’s first tablet to come with a metallic unibody design

With the tablet market booming due to pandemic-induced growth, more and more companies that primarily sell smartphones are looking to snatch a slice of the pie. One of them is vivo, which is reportedly set to make its debut into the space this year with the vivo Pad.

Digital Chat Station had earlier revealed that the tablet will sport a 120Hz 11-inch display with a 2560 x 1600 resolution, among other things. The same tipster has now provided additional information, saying that the display will also support HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, making it likely that the vivo Pad will be a premium offering. Its use of the high-end Snapdragon 870 chip testifies to that.

vivo first tablet tab specs by dcs

The vivo Pad will be giving a miss to fingerprint recognition, though, which is a bit odd. It could be possible that it will support facial unlocking instead, but that’s just a guess at this point.

The rear camera setup of the tablet will be comprised of dual 13MP cameras and the design of the entire thing is “like a full metal body.” A unibody design is thus likely. Two speakers at the top and bottom will handle the audio and the tablet will also come with matching keyboard and stylus pen accessories.

Digital Chat Station says that the pricing of the vivo Pad isn’t too high and the device aims to set up a multi-device ecosystem.

Do keep in mind here that the “vivo Pad” name is only a supposed moniker and the final unit may be called something else.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 concept renders are here with S22 Ultra-inspired designs

With new entrants like Huawei and OPPO, the competition in the foldable smartphones game sure is warming up. Samsung is the king of the hill no more, thanks to offerings like the OPPO Find N that sport more modern designs and also solve the crease problem to a degree. But the Korean company is reportedly already working on a sequel to last year’s Galaxy Z Fold3 — and fans are going big on expectations.

A couple of prominent smartphone concept creators just dropped their own takes on what the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 could look like, although both their renders look to be heavily inspired by the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The S22 Ultra is Samsung’s latest ‘superphone’ and comes with absolute top-of-the-line specs. It would therefore make sense for the Fold4 to inherit a similar design since it also is an ultra-premium flagship offering.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 concept render
Galaxy Z Fold4 by Ben Geskin

Ben Geskin’s Z Fold4 concept render retains the same form-factor as the device’s predecessor, with a narrow external display paired with a rectangular inner screen. The camera module has been changed completely though. The Galaxy Z Fold3 featured a single camera island housing three cameras and a flash, but the Z Fold4 render shows a camera system that looks almost identical to the S22 Ultra.

Apple Lab’s concept render looks very similar but goes for three rear shooters instead of four on the one from Ben. It also depicts three color options — black, white, and lavender.

Do keep in mind that Samsung is yet to provide any clues as to what the next iteration of its flagship foldable offering will look like, so the above renders are purely imagination-based. It is hence advisable to take them with a pinch of salt.

According to previous reports, the Galaxy Z Fold4 is expected to go live around Q3 2022. Not much is known about the device at the moment but tipsters have revealed that it will bring camera improvements, among other things.

In the known benchmarking platform, the upcoming Magic 4 seemingly beat Samsung’s new top end flagship, the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which carried the model number SM-S908U.

The Honor Magic device scored 3,901 points in the multi core tests, while the Galaxy S22 Ultra achieved 3,303 points. On the other hand, it also managed to get a slight lead with 1245 points in single core test over the latter’s 1215 points. However, this is just an early benchmark and both device are running on the same chipset. Furthermore, synthetic benchmarks aren’t always a good indicator of performance in real life, so stick around for more updates.

Google launches Android 13 Developer Preview 1 with improved interface and privacy

It’s been a few months since Google released the Android 12 operating system and even though there are plenty of devices waiting to get updated to the newer version of Android, the company is working on its successor.

The first developer preview of Android 13 is now available to download for the users of the Pixel 4, 5, and 6 series. The new version comes with an improved user interface and new privacy-related features.

Android 13 Developer Preview 1

As the newly released version is a developer preview, it is meant for testing purposes and is not suitable to be used on a daily driver. The majority of the features revealed in this version appear to be focused on the developers.

There are new tools for the developers to better integrate apps with the Material You theme. The themed app icon can also inherit a part of the color palette, matching the rest of the interface on the device. The feature is coming first to Pixel devices but Google says it’s working with other manufacturers to release it more widely.

Android 13 Developer Preview 1 Photo Picker

The company is also tweaking how Android handles security and permission. A new photo picker will let users share photos and videos with an individual app without the app needing permission for all photos. This feature won’t be limited to Android 13 and will make its way to devices running Android 11 and above.

In Android 13, Google is adding a new “NEARBY_WIFI_DEVICES” permission which will give apps a list of nearby devices without the need for location permission. The language preference can also be set on a per-app basis.

Google has said that it plans to release Android 13’s developer previews for a couple of months and then transition to beta release sometime around April. This means that the official stable version could get released around June or July.

Snapdragon 8 Gen1 Gaming Performance Test: Xiaomi 12 Pro vs OnePlus 10 Pro vs Realme GT 2 Pro vs iQOO 9 Pro vs Moto Edge X30

Ever since the launch of the new flagship smartphones rocking the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, we have been testing them against one another to bring you more clarity on their performance in various scenarios.

And today, the Gizmochina team brings you the Gaming performance of Xiaomi 12 Pro, the OnePlus 10 Pro, the Realme GT 2 Pro, the iQOO 9 Pro, and the Moto Edge X30, to answer the frequently asked question of which amount these is the best for gaming.

Benchmark tests

To kick things off, we first put all the devices through the usual Geekbench 5, 3DMark, and Antutu Benchmarks to get a baseline.

Xiaomi 12 Pro OnePlus 10 Pro Realme GT 2 Pro iQOO 9 Pro Moto Edge X30 Benchmark results

The iQOO 9 Pro puts the best overall performance in Geekbench scoring 3840 points in the multi-core test and 1225 points in the single-core test.  It is worth mentioning that the Realme GT 2 Pro and OnePlus 10 Pro managed to outshine the iQOO 9 Pro in single-core performance with 1264 and 1229 points respectively. However, the device had a sizable lead against them in multi-core tests landing it in the first position.

The iQOO 9 Pro also scored the highest in the Antutu benchmark with 1,020,542 points and is followed closely by the Xiaomi 12 Pro which managed a score of 993,852 points. Surprisingly, the OnePlus 10 Pro takes the cake in the GPU-intensive 3DMark Wild Life test with the best peek out of all five devices with 10,069 points.

However, peek performance is not a good metric to display the real-life performance of smartphones as it omits the prolonged use case. So next up, we subject the five Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 flagships to the 3Dmark Wildlife extreme stress test which repeats the same stress test 20 times in a row.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 flagships 3Dmark Wildlife extreme stress test

In this stress test, the OnePlus 10 Pro started headstrong however its performance went down from round 8 due to thermal throttling. The iQOO 9 Pro was the only device to maintain durable performance output with excellent stability across the stress test. The Motorola Edge X30 also performed well offering almost 70% stability through the test however it was also the hottest running phone among the five devices. Unfortunately, the Xiaomi 12 Pro wasn’t able to complete the test due to its overheating limit.

Gaming framerate and heating test

But benchmarks are not always indicative of actual game performance so we quickly loaded up some games in the five flagships to test which one is the actual performance king when it comes to gaming.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 flagships PUBG Mobile test

First up, we tested PUBG Mobile which was a breeze for all five devices. All of them managed similar average FPS numbers in the range of 59-60 FPS. But in Genshin Impact, the devices started showing gaps in thermal and frame rate performance.

The Realme GT 2 Pro gave us the biggest surprise with its highest average FPS numbers at 57.6. However, once we factor in the heat produced by the smartphones, the iQOO 9 Pro emerges as the true winner of this test by offering 54.5 FPS on average while remaining almost 4-5 degrees cooler than the Realme GT 2 Pro.

For our third and last game test, we ran Nimian Legends at 2k resolution and the highest graphic settings the game has to offer.

This time around, the Motorola Edge X30 stands out from its competitors with an average of 46.2 frames per second but the phone also got as hot as 56 degrees celsius which made it really uncomfortable to hold. Apart from the Edge X30, the other four devices remained close to each other giving 39-40 FPS on average.

Conclusion

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 speed test

If we only look at the framerate data, the Realme GT 2 Pro and the Moto Edge X30 offer the best performance out of the bunch. However, when we consider the thermal performance of the devices and their stability in maintaining consistent frame rates, the iQOO 9 Pro emerges as the undisputed king of gaming devices out of the five.

Dell launches UltraSharp 4K IPS monitors with double the traditional contrast ratio

The well-known American computer technology brand Dell has just launched a new monitor that is the first to use “IPS Black” technology. The technology was unveiled by LG at CES 2022 and works by doubling the contrast ratio.

IPS panels usually offer a contrast ratio of 1000:1 however these new monitors ship featuring a contrast ratio of 2000:1. Dell UltraSharp U2723QE and the UltraSharp U3223QE are 4K panels measuring 27-inch and 32-inch respectively. They have a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels and offer a maximum brightness of 400 nits. They cover 100% of the Rec 709 and sRGB color gamuts and support 98% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. It’s also easy on the eyes with low blue light output and supports VESA DisplayHDR 400.

However, one drawback of these Dell UltraSharp monitors is the 60Hz maximum refresh rate, which makes it undesirable for fast-paced FPS games and other titles that demand a high refresh rate. It also offers a rather ordinary 5ms to 8ms GtG response time.

Dell UltraSharp 32 4K USB-C Hub Monitor

The monitor features multiple connectivity options with HDMI, DisplayPort, three USB 3.2 Gen2, and even a couple of USB-C ports. It also offers an inbuilt Ethernet port and a 3.5mm audio port.

The monitors come with some hefty price tags as the 27-inch Dell UltraSharp 27 4K USB-C Hub Monitor U2723QE costs $779.99. And the 32-inch Dell UltraSharp 32 4K USB-C Hub Monitor U3223QE is priced at an eye-popping $1,149.99.

RedMagic 7 Featured

This is contrary to the past reports that revealed a full-fledged 165W fast charging support on the device. It seems like, Nubia is simply employing the 165W Gallium Nitrite head to make the PD more efficient. But actually, it will have a 135W fast charging solution.

Nonetheless, having a 135W quick charging on a RedMagic phone is the first for the company. To recall, the predecessor RedMagic 6 Pro was limited to 120W fast charging technology.

Apart from this, the RedMagic 7 was spotted on multiple certifications previously. We learned that the device will feature a 6.8-inch FHD+ OLED display. It will come with a 165Hz refresh rate and a faster touch sampling rate. As for the cameras, it will get a single selfie snapper and a 64MP triple rear camera system.

Inside, the gaming phone will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. It will house a 4,500mAh battery and come with up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM,  512GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage. It will run on Android 12 OS out of the box and have the Redmagic UI.

But other brands have a lot of other flagship killers worth considering before opting for the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE: one of the most valid ones released in the last period is definitely the OPPO Reno7 Pro 5G, that is the reason why we decided to make a comparison between these two amazing high-end phones sold at great prices.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES Dual SIM slot, 5G Dual SIM slot, 5G, waterproof IP68, reverse wireless charging

Design

It is not a matter of tastes: the OPPO Reno7 Pro 5G features a more attractive design than the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE. First of all, it is built with more premium materials: a glass back and an aluminum frame. Further, it is thinner and lightweight with a thickness of just 7.5 mm and a weight of 180 grams. Further, it has those flat borders like the latest iPhones making the phone even more elegant, as well as LED lights placed on the rear side which can be used for notifications and call alerts. But the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE remains a beautiful and well-built phone. Further, it is waterproof with the IP68 certification and it is more compact than its rival.

Display

The displays of the OPPO Reno7 Pro 5G and the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE are more or less at the same level. They have a lot of things in common: they are AMOLED panels with a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, an in-display fingerprint scanner, and the HDR10+ certification improving the image quality on streaming platforms. The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE has a smaller display with a diagonal of 6.4 inches and a higher refresh rate which can reach 120 Hz. Further, its display is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus, so it should be very resistant.

Specs & Software

In several markets, the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE is powered by the Snapdragon 888 mobile platform by Qualcomm which is a better SoC than the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 Max found on the OPPO Reno7 Pro 5G. However, the Reno7 Pro 5G has a higher quantity of RAM: 12 GB, which looks more important than a slightly better chipset. Both the phones ship with a highly customized user interface on top: One UI 4 based on Android 12 and ColorOS 12 based on Android 11, respectively. Do you prefer having a slightly better chipset or 4 gigs more RAM?

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE is definitely a more interesting camera phone. It has a great 12 MP main camera with OIS, a 12 MP telephoto sensor with OIS and 3x optical zoom, and a 12 MP ultrawide camera with a 123° FOV, as well as a 32 MP front snapper which is able to record 4K videos. Unfortunately, the OPPO Reno7 Pro 5G lacks a telephoto sensor, replaced by a useless macro camera with a 2 MP resolution. Even the ultrawide camera is inferior with its 8 MP resolution, while the main sensor is a good 50 MP Sony camera.

Battery

The batteries found on the OPPO Reno7 Pro 5G and Samsung Galaxy S21 FE come with the same capacity: 4500 mAh. Given that the capacities are the same and the components are similar in terms of energy consumption, we expect these devices to offer a similar battery life. The OPPO Reno7 Pro 5G features a faster charging technology with 65W power, while the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE supports wireless charging, unlike its rival.

Price

The OPPO Reno7 Pro 5G 12/256 GB is priced at about Rs. 54,999 / $730 in the Indian market, and the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE starts from the same listing price in the 6/128 GB configuration. There is no definitive winner for this comparison: the Reno7 Pro 5G features a better design, those great LED lights, faster charging, and more RAM. With the Galaxy S21 FE, you get a better chipset, very good cameras, a waterproof body, and wireless charging.
