Starlink stops taking bookings In India over order from the local Government

Elon Musk’s Starlink has ended taking any bookings for its services in India following an order from the local government. The company has apparently been ordered to stop pre-bookings after the government of India has asked the firm to obtain the appropriate licenses before continuing its operations in the region.

Starlink

The order from the Indian government had been shared last month through a public advisory. In other words, the satellite based internet service provider is still not licensed in the country. As per the advisory, the central government asked the public not to pay any amount to the Elon Musk backed company. Furthermore, the government also told Starlink to stop taking bookings for its satellite internet services “with immediate effect” in India.

Now, the official Starlink pre-bookings page now reads that the company “is not yet available in your area but as we launch more satellites, we continue to expand our coverage area. Please check back for future availability in your area.” Previously, the company was accepting bookings in the region for a refundable deposit of 99 US Dollars (roughly 7,400 US Dollars). To continue its operations in the country, the firm will have to acquire the appropriate license from the Department of Telecom.

Starlink

Furthermore, the government has also asked the company to comply with the Indian regulatory framework prior to launching its service in India. For those unaware, Starlink had announced a couple of months prior that it will be launching its service in India, with its focus being on rural regions. We can expect the company to obtain the “requisite licenses” since it plans to launch its services across the globe.

OriginOS Ocean gets showcased for the first time through an official teaser

vivo had announced at the end of the last month that the next version of its custom Android skin – OriginOS Ocean – will be officially released on December 9th. And today, the company has posted on its Weibo account a teaser for the same showing the update’s UI for the first time.

OriginOS Ocean has brought along a major upgrade to the home screen this year, as if the last version wasn’t already unique enough. Icons and widgets both seem to have gotten a whole new look. The current version of OriginOS also came with an option to toggle between a traditional home screen interface and vivo’s own interpretation of what a home screen should look like. This has now done away with, meaning that there’s no “parallel world” anymore.

originos ocean 2.0 poster

But it’s not just the home screen that has received changes. From the lock screen clock icon to the re-designed call interface, it’s clear that the entire design language of OriginOS has been altered a bit with the latest version.

The new lock screen depicted in the upper right corner of the poster is easily one of the most radical designs yet. It features multiple shortcuts for taking pictures, payment, and even some reminders that show up in the form of cards, making it possible to perform certain actions quickly without the need for unlocking the device first.

There’s also a Super Card Pack feature that allows you to conveniently initiate payments through various cards you’ve added to the device, making payments as seamless as NFC. It can be accessed by sliding inward at the lower right corner of the screen.

At present, OriginOS Ocean recruitment program has already commenced for multiple vivo devices. These are vivo X70 Pro+, X70 Pro, X70, X60 Pro+, X60t Pro+, X60 Pro, X60 curved-screen version, S10 Pro, S10, S9, iQOO 8 Pro, iQOO 8, and iQOO 7.

Xiaomi has successfully registered ‘Xiaomi Pay’ trademark

Recently, Xiaomi had filed for a new trademark application for a “Xiaomi Pay.” Now, this trademark’s status has been officially changed to registered. In other words, the company was successful in filing for the finance based platform.

The trademark in question was initially applied back in April 2021. Furthermore, the Chinese tech giant had recently also filed for trademarks under the “Mi Pay” name as well. These had an international classification and were under the financial property management category. Although, since the company had recently dropped its “Mi” branding officially, it would make sense that it might even rename its Mi Pay platform to Xiaomi Pay.

Xiaomi

Previously, the company had also announced that an NFC based Mi Pay straps for its wearable devices for contactless payments. For those unaware, the Mi Pay is a financial property management that seeks to offer users a simplified payment system that can be accessed via the brand’s products. This includes gadgets with and without the support for NFC. With the new trademark, the brand might change the name from Mi Pay to Xiaomi Pay, however, that is still speculation. So take this report with a pinch of salt for now and stay tuned for more updates.

Here’s the confirmed list of brands launching Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 phones

Earlier this week, Qualcomm announced its latest flagship grade SoC, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset. Following its announcement, a number of smartphone brands shared that their own premium handset offerings will be powered by this new chip. So let’s take a look at the companies that will launch a flagship device with this new processor.

Talking about the chipset itself first, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 arrives with various improvements to its core technologies. This includes 5G connectivity, camera sensors, AI, gaming, audio, and security. It is built using a 4nm process over the 5nm process used in the last-gen Snapdragon 888 SoC, and features the latest ARM v9 architecture. The SoC is an octa-core processor and is claimed to offer 20 percent better performance while having a 30 percent improvement in power efficiency as well.

With the announcement of the new Qualcomm flagship SoC, a number of smartphone makers took to social media platforms to announce their upcoming handsets as well. Among the bunch, brands like Xiaomi are said to be one of the first to feature this latest chipset. Other companies like Realme and Motorola have also confirmed that they are going to be one of the early adopters of this new chip. So let’s have a look at all the brands that could be launching their flagship phones with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

1Xiaomi

Shortly after the Qualcomm announcement, the Chinese tech giant took to Twitter to share a short video that teased the new chipset. This, in turn, also confirmed that its next-gen flagship Xiaomi 12 series will feature the newly announced SoC. As per initial reports, the brand was said to be the first company to launch a smartphone with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip. However, other reports hinted at the company only being among the first batches since other brands have already announced a launch date, which is just a few days away.

Although, this even could mean that the availability of its flagship phones might be earlier than other brands, rather than just the announcement.

Talking about the device itself, the Xiaomi 12 series is expected to feature a curved AMOLED display on the front with a 120Hz refresh rate. The series is also expected to offer a 50-megapixel primary camera on the rear and support 100W+ fast charging as well. We had previously covered a tipster’s hint at a December 12 launch date, so stay tuned for more updates.

2Motorola

Motorola is also gearing up for the launch of its next-gen flagship smartphone, which will be a part of its Edge X30 series. The premium-grade series in question is set to be officially announced on December 9, which might make it the first brand to unveil a smartphone with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. This device is set to sport a 6.67 inch FHD+ OLED display that supports a 144Hz refresh rate on the front, while the rear houses a 50-megapixel triple camera module.

3OPPO

Similar to Xiaomi, another Chinese brand, Oppo, also took to Twitter to announce their upcoming high-end smartphone that will feature the newly announced Qualcomm chipset. Unfortunately, the brand only announced that it will be launching a smartphone with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, but did not reveal any finer details regarding this device. Although, the Find X4 Pro is expected to be this flagship handset, which is expected to launch sometime in Q1 2022. In other words, it is also among the first batch to feature this new chipset.

4OnePlus

Earlier today (1st December 2021), OnePlus shared a new post on its official Weibo account (a Chinese microblogging website). On the social media platform, the company officially announced that its new generation of flagship smartphones will feature the Snapdragon 8 series SoC. While the company did not reveal any finer details, the model is expected to be the OnePlus 10 series. The series is rumored to feature top-notch specs like a curved Quad HD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, along with LPDDR5 memory and UFS 3.1 storage. This lineup is also expected to debut in the first quarter of next year.

5Realme

The Realme GT 2 Pro is the highly anticipated 2022 flagship smartphone from the brand. It is also officially confirmed to feature the top-end Snapdragon 8 series platform. The handset is expected to feature a Super AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, punch hole cutout, and an in-display fingerprint sensor. On the rear, a 108-megapixel primary sensor will be paired with an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens, and a 5-megapixel tertiary sensor. The front features a 32-megapixel selfies shooter, as per previous leaks.

6Vivo

Following the Snapdragon Technology Summit, Vivo also shared an announcement on Weibo that revealed its plans for a new Snapdragon 8 series-powered smartphone. Unfortunately, finer details are currently unknown, but we can expect the chip to debut in its upcoming Nex 4, X80 Pro, and X80 Pro+ series of smartphones. On the other hand, iQOO has also announced that their next-gen flagship will feature this processor as well. It is likely a part of the iQOO 9 series.

7Other Brands

A number of other brands are also looking to launch their premium offerings with the new SoC. This includes the likes of Honor with its Magic4 series, Samsung with its Galaxy S22 series, Redmi with its Redmi K50 series, Nubia with the Z40 series, Black Shark with the Black Shark 5 series, ZTE with the Axon 40 series, Red Magic with its Red Magic 7 series and even Sharp and Sony as well. Keep in mind, that a number of models mentioned above have yet to be confirmed or even officially revealed as of right now and are just based on educated guesses.

Although, with the companies previously equipping their flagships with the latest and greatest Snapdragon chips, it won’t be surprised if an official confirmation from these brands is just around the corner.

iPhone market share to hit 23% in Q4 2021, effectively dethroning Samsung

A market intelligence company is predicting that the iPhone market share will rise to 23.1% in the final quarter of 2021, based on supply chain data of smartphone production levels. The increase is quite significant considering last quarter’s share of just 15.9% percent. What’s more is that the rise will lead Apple to take the crown from Samsung in terms of market share.

The growth can be owed to strong holiday quarter demand and better supply chain management when compared to competitors (via 9to5Mac, TrendForce). But despite improvements, there is no doubt that semiconductor shortages are continuing to affect smartphone sales in general.

trendforce apple iphone smartphone market
Image: TrendForce

As for improvements in smartphone demand, most of it can be owed to the peak season for e-commerce promotional activities in the second half of this year. While easing of COVID-19 restrictions in Southeast Asia did lead to the resumption of factory operations in countries like Vietnam, significant shortages of components including 4G SoCs, low-end 5G SoCs, display panel driver ICs, etc. have persisted. These constraints are holding back smartphone production in H2 2021.

TrendForce further said that Apple’s iPhone 13 launch was clearly a big success. Thanks to the three models, the total iPhone production for 3Q21 registered a QoQ increase of 22.6% to 51.5 million units. With this result, Apple was also able to climb to second place in the global ranking.

More good days lie ahead for the Cupertino-based company though with the present holiday quarter. Supply chain reports on production levels suggest Samsung, Oppo, Xiaomi, and Vivo are all likely to see their market share fall, while Apple will see its share grow from 15.9% last quarter to 23.2% the current one. This will be enough to overtake Samsung and take the overall lead in the global smartphone market.

POCO X3, X3 Pro get MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition update in India

Xiaomi is said to unveil MIUI 13 at the Xiaomi 12 series launch event this month at the earliest. However, the company is yet to finish the MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition rollout for some of the eligible devices. Two such phones, namely POCO X3 and POCO X3 Pro have now begun to receive the current latest version of MIUI via a system update.

POCO X3 Pro

The POCO X3 is more than a year old. On the other hand, the POCO X3 Pro made its debut earlier this year. But both launched with MIUI 12, albeit with different Android versions. Anyway, both of them now run Android 11 and they even received MIUI 12.5.

Following that, the smartphones have now finally started receiving the MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition update in India with the following build numbers.

Unsurprisingly, the OTA software update is being rolled out in batches. Therefore, some users might receive it earlier, while others will have to wait a bit longer. The update should be also available for other regional variants of the handsets.

The POCO X3 and POCO X3 Pro are strong contenders for MIUI 13 update, given their age and popularity. An alleged eligible list even suggests the same. Anyway, POCO is yet to officially confirm it.

New iPhone SE mid-range 5G phone could be launching in Q1 2022

Apple is reportedly working on a new iPhone SE model. Fresh information shared by TrendForce, a research firm from Taiwan, the third-generation iPhone SE is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2022. Probably, the Cupertino based brand will announce it by the end of March 2021.

The research firm claimed that apart from launching the alleged iPhone SE 2022 in Q1 2022, Apple will also have four models in the second half of the year. It is expected to arrive as a mid-range phone with support for 5G connectivity. Apple’s production volume for the coming year is expected to reach 25 to 30 million units, claimed the company.

Apple iPhone SE (2020)
Apple iPhone SE (2020)

It was revealed by reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that the appearance of the iPhone SE will be similar to the existing iPhone SE 2020 model. Hence, it is expected to retain the 4.7-inch display. The only major change the iPhone SE 2022 is expected to offer is the inclusion of a new processor that will bring support for 5G connectivity.

The iPhone SE 2020 borrowed a lot of features from the iPhone 8 and came with upgraded internals like the Apple Bionic A13 chip. It is likely that the iPhone SE 2022 may feature the Apple A15 Bionic, which powers the iPhone 13 series that debuted this year.

Rumors also suggest the existence of the iPhone SE Plus. However, the new report has no information on it.

MIUI Launcher gets a subtle new animation in prep fror MIUI 13

MIUI 13 development is currently in full swing and a number of devices have already been testing the version internally. There are rumors doing rounds about the update being set for launch along with the Xiaomi 12 on December 16th. While that remains to be confirmed, we have already begun to see signs of the update on the MIUI 12.5 Chinese beta channel.

The latest among these signs is an update to the MIUI Launcher Alpha that adds a subtle yet important little animation to the app, in prep for MIUI 13. Now, when apps are being loaded, like for example following a reboot, you will get a loading icon for a few seconds to show that apps aren’t loaded yet. This replaces the previous behavior where apps began to pop up one by one and the launcher stuttered a bit following a restart. Basically, the animation stops you from using the launcher until it gets fully ready.

Apart from the above, the MIUI Launcher Alpha build fixes a number of bugs and issues from previous Alpha builds.

The new animation is available with MIUI Launcher Alpha v4.26.0.4048-11301642. The APK for the same can be downloaded through this Telegram link (via Xiaomiui). Do keep in mind that it may not work on Global ROMs since it’s targeted towards MIUI 12.5 Chinese beta builds. It might still work for Xiaomi.eu users though.

Coming to MIUI 13 itself, the Android skin has been touted to be a major upgrade over MIUI 12.5, bringing along a range of improvements and UI changes. At least 9 devices are currently known to have already received internal test builds, namely the entirety of the Mi 11 series, Mi 11 Lite 5G, Mi 10S, MIX 4, and the Redmi K40/K40 Pro/K40 Pro+. These devices will likely be receiving Android 12-based MIUI 13 stable but several others will even receive Android 11-based MIUI 13.

Translucent prototype of Apple AirPods and Apple 29W Charger surfaces online

Apple device collector Giulio Zompetti has shared images on Twitter that show a transparent prototype of two of the company’s products — Apple AirPods and Apple 29W Charger or Power Adapter.

The shared images show Apple AirPods, either first-generation or the second generation, in a clear or transparent plastic case for the outer shell of the earbuds, including the stem part. This gives a clear look at the internals of true wireless earphones. It is likely to be an engineering prototype used for internal testing.

A week ago, Giulio Zompetti had shared images of a prototype of an Apple 29W charger which also has a transparent casing. For those who are unaware, the company was offering a 29W power adapter with the 12-inch MacBook but was discontinued along with that product and was replaced with a 30W adapter.

Giulio Zompetti is an avid collector of Apple prototype devices and has previously shared images of an Apple Watch Series 3 prototype with additional connectors, an original iPad with two 30-pin ports, an iPhone 12 Pro prototype, a third-generation iPod Touch with a rear camera, the original Apple Watch prototypes, and a working AirPower prototype which hasn’t been launched in the market.

As we noted above, the transparent AirPods prototype was likely used for internal testing and it’s highly unlikely that the technology giant is planning to launch such a version in the market. Apple launches AirPods in just White color without giving users a choice in the matter, is not suddenly going to offer a transparent option to customers.

This prototype of AirPods may remind you of the Nothing Ear (1) true wireless earphones which comes with a transparent design for the earbuds as well as the charging case. It was launched earlier this year as the first-ever product of Nothing, a new technology venture started by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei.
