Apple iPhone X modded to replace Lightning port with USB Type-C port

Apple has slowly started migrating towards using USB Type-C port on its devices, with iPad Mini being the latest device coming with a USB-C port. However, the company’s smartphones, the iPhone series models, still feature its proprietary Lightning port.

While Apple is yet to make the changes to the iPhones, a YouTube video claims that a user of the iPhone named Ken Pillonel has installed the USB-C component into the iPhone X, replacing the Lightning port in the process.

Apple iPhone X USB-C port

Ken Pillonel has a background in electronics and has studied for a Master’s degree in robotics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, EPFL, says a report from AppleInsider. It means that not everyone can make this change on their device.

In the video, it is claimed that after making the change, the phone is able to receive power via the connection, as well as being able to handle data transfers over a USB-C cable.

Ken Pillonel reverse-engineered Apple’s C94 connector to make a PCB with a female USB-C port. After the schematics were set in place, he started working to shrink it down and install it into the iPhone.

He had been working on this for a few months now, detailing the process on his own personal blog. He got a flexible PCB last month and says that a future video is in production which explains how the board was made and squeezed into the iPhone itself.

It’s noteworthy that according to Apple’s Repair Terms and Conditions, unauthorized modification deems the device as “Out-of-Warranty” when in need of repair if it prevents Apple from addressing the reported issue with the device.

Today, we’ll do a rumour roundup of all the details learned so far, giving us an idea of what to expect from the upcoming Shark 4S series launch event.

Black Shark 4S Rumor Roundup: What to Expect?

Design and Display

Only recently, the rumours for the Black Shark 4S series surfaced on the internet confirming the monikers. Recent posters revealed that the 4S series will bring a similar design as the predecessors with slightly different graphics at the back.

The duo is touted to come with a 6.67-inch AMOLED display with a Full-HD+ resolution. The series will feature a 144Hz refresh rate and a touch sampling rate of a whopping 720Hz. This time around, the screen will be a punch-hole panel with thin bezels. Reportedly, it is said to be a Samsung E4 panel.

The series will feature a pressure-sensitive screen offering dual-zone pressure sensitivity. These pressure-sensitive zones will serve as in-game controls.

Cameras on the Black Shark 4S

The Black Shark 4S series is expected to come with a triple camera system at the rear and a single selfie camera. While the details for the vanilla model are yet to be known, rumours reveal that the 4S Pro will have a 64MP main sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, and a 5MP macro camera. Upfront, it will feature a 20MP selfie snapper.

For those who are unaware, this is the same camera setup seen in the predecessor Black Shark 4 Pro. That said, the vanilla model is also expected to come with a similar camera system but, it may replace the 64MP lens with some other sensor.

Hardware and Software

A popular tipster Bald Panda revealed that the Pro model will come powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888+ SoC. Recently, an AnTuTu listing confirmed that the device is indeed powering the Snapdragon 888+.

To recall, the predecessor powered the non-plus variant of the Snapdragon 888. Hence, there will be a slight improvement in the performance. The AnTuTu sheet showed a score of 887734.

Talking about the vanilla model, reports claim that the 4S will also have Snapdragon 888+ chipset. The duo will have up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.1 built-in storage. Reportedly, the Pro model will have an SSD disk array system which allows the storage to offer faster read and write speeds.

As for the battery, the Black Shark 4S series is expected to have fast charging support. However, only the Pro model’s exact details are available. The Shark 4S Pro will pack a 4,500mAh battery with support for 120W fast charging support. We can expect a similar battery capacity in the vanilla model. The series will run on Android 11 out of the box with Joy UI on top of it.

Pricing, Color variants, and Availability

Unfortunately, the pricing of the series has not been leaked. But, what we know are the colour variants. Considering it will be a gamer-centric smartphone series, the phones won’t have any fancy colours. Instead, there will be only two finishes – White and Blue. Both colours will have heavy graphics at the back with a Black Shark branding.

The series will launch on October 13 in China and is expected to go on sale soon after its launch. As of now, there’s no intimation of its global release but we expect the phones to land in other markets in the coming months.

Google’s Fuchsia OS to support more devices and other form factors

Fuchsia OS is the newest operating system from Google that was launched earlier this year. This latest software from the technology giant is already powering the company’s first-generation Nest Hub.

Now, a new job listing from the company, spotted by 9to5Google, sheds light on the matter that Google is looking to expand the Fuchsia operating system to “additional smart devices and other form factors.”

Google’s Fuchsia OS

For those who are unaware, Google has been working on this new Fuchsia OS for a few years, developing the software from scratch. It launched earlier this year without any fanfare, powering the Nest Hub, which seamlessly switched from Cast Platform.

The company has been working on adding support of Fuchsia OS on more devices, including the Nest Hub Max and the second-generation Nest Hub. Now, the company is looking to expand it to more devices and not just smart displays.

From the job listing, it appears that the “Fuchsia Devices team” will be working on the operating system and will be responsible for making sure that it can successfully apply the Fuchsia platform to real world products that make a difference to Google and users.

As of now, there’s no information about what new form factors the operating system will support but it’s likely to be the devices with support for Chromecast, Video Conferencing, and Machine Learning capabilities.

There’s also a possibility that Google could work with some of its partners and bring the latest Fuchsia OS to non-Google devices, including products from companies like JBL and Lenovo. Do note that there’s no concrete evidence on where this latest OS from Google is heading and this is just speculation until more details surface online.

Opinion: There is a need for a smaller Amazfit GTR smartwatch

Zepp Health (Huami) has announced three new smartwatches – the Amazfit GTR 3, Amazfit GTR 3 Pro, and the Amazfit GTS 3. All three smartwatches pack multiple new features and competitive price tags. Just like their predecessors, they should sell pretty well. However, there is a demographic that most likely won’t be picking up any of the new smartwatches, not that they are bad, but because none of these smartwatches is for them, no thanks to their size.

Amazfit GTR 42mm

The last time Zepp Health announced a smartwatch under its GT series with a small dial was in 2019, and that was the Amazfit GTR 42mm which launched with a 1.20-inch display. Since then, it has launched 8 new smartwatches under the GT series, none of which has a display smaller than 1.39 inches.

My wife has an Amazfit GTR 47 Lite, and while she likes it, especially for its long battery life, she has said a few times that she wishes it was smaller. So, on some days she ditches it for her Withings hybrid watch which not only has a smaller display, but is more comfortable, and is a better match for select outfits. We have both discussed picking up new Amazfit smartwatches, but seeing as none of these new models have a small display, I don’t see her sticking to Amazfit when she’s ready to upgrade.

Not everyone wants a watch with a large display, and there are lots of people, including me, with a small wrist size. It is therefore disappointing to see Zepp Health launch products that do not cater to this demographic. Competitors such as Apple and Samsung know the importance of having multiple sizes which is why their watches including the new Apple Watch Series 7 and Galaxy Watch4 series come in different sizes.

I have no idea what Zepp Health’s product lineup for the future looks like but I want to believe there is space for a smaller Amazfit GTR watch. Last year, it launched the Amazfit GTR 2e, a cheaper version but with the same screen size as the GTR 2. The GTS 2, on the other hand, got two more affordable models – the GTS 2e and the GTS 2 Mini, with the latter packing a smaller display than its siblings. If it plans to launch more third-generation GT models, then it makes sense to include an Amazfit GTR 3 Mini with a smaller display or an Amazfit GTR 3 42mm version.

Of course, there are tradeoffs with having a smaller display such as a smaller battery which means reduced battery life. Nevertheless, if the battery life can be kept at 12 days just like on the Amazfit GTR 42mm, folks should be fine with it. Heck, the new Amazfit GTR 3 Pro and Amazfit GTS 3 both have a 12-day battery life.

Vivo V2009A’s specifications, images appear in TENAA’s database

An upcoming Vivo smartphone with a V2009A model number has been spotted at TENAA. The certification has revealed all the major specifications and images of the device. Unfortunately, there is no information available on the moniker of the device.

Vivo V2009A specifications

The Vivo V2009A handset measures 163.84 x 75 x 7.79mm and weighs 176 grams. The handset houses a 6.58-inch TFT screen that delivers a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2408 pixels. It is backed by a 4,005mAh battery.

The V2009A features an 8-megapixel front camera. Its back panel has a dual-camera system with a 50-megapixel primary lens and a 2-megapixel secondary shooter. The device boots to Android 11 OS and it has a side-facing fingerprint scanner. It is driven by a 2.4GHz octa-core processor.

Vivo V2009A

It is likely to arrive in China in 8 GB and 12 GB RAM editions. The device offers storage options like 128 GB and 256 GB. For more storage, it has a microSD card slot.

The specifications of the V2009A are identical to the Vivo V2156A phone that was approved by the TENAA authority recently. They mainly differ in the network department. The V2156A may release in the Chinese market with the Vivo Y55s or Y76s moniker. The V2009A is yet to receive 3C certification. The 3C appearance of V2156A has revealed that it supports 44W fast charging. Hence, it is likely that the V2009A may offer the same charging speeds.

Google’s Pixel Pass could bundle Pixel 6, Google Fi, YouTube Premium, and more

After unveiling its next-generation Pixel 6 series flagship smartphones a few weeks back, Google has officially confirmed that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will be officially launched on 19th October, powered by the company’s new Tensor chipset.

Now, according to the latest report, the search engine giant is also gearing up to launch a new subscription service named “Pixel Pass” which will be bundling several Google services under one bill.

Google Pixel Pass Subscription Service Bundle Leak

Brandon Lee of This Is Tech Today reveals in a tweet that the upcoming Pixel Pass is a “monthly subscription that addresses users’ mobile needs end-to-end.” It is a bundle of several Google services, which includes the following:

  • Pixel device financing
  • YouTube Premium/YouTube Music
  • Google One storage
  • Play Pass
  • Google Fi mobile network service
  • Preferred Care/Device Protection

This means that with the new “Pixel Pass” bundle, the customer can purchase a Pixel smartphone from the Google Fi or Google Store with a financing option. It would also include the option of Google’s Preferred Care or Device Protection plans for an extended warranty. If the previous subscription offering for Google’s devices is to go by, then some of these services could be an optional part of the bundle.

It remains to be seen if the services offered as a part of the Pixel Pass bundle by Google will just unite them under a single bill or offer some sort of discount. However, it’s highly likely that there will be some kind of discount for bundling the services together. It is also yet to be confirmed if the subscription will be limited to the new Pixel 6 lineup or will be available with other Pixel devices as well.

The pro model has a bigger display at 1.45 inches and a 70.6% screen-to-body ratio which Zepp Health claims is the highest on a smartwatch with a round dial. The Amazfit GTS 3 packs a bigger AMOLED display too that measures 1.75-inches, has a resolution of 390 x 450, and has a 341 PPI pixel density. Its screen-to-body ratio is 72.4%.

There are more than 100 watch faces to choose from including 15 animated ones and 12 editable watch faces (8 for the GTR 3). Users can also upload their own photos to use as a watch face

All three smartwatches come with the new BioTracker PPG 3.0 biometric sensor with increased accuracy thanks to its 6 photodiodes and 2 LEDs. The new sensor adds the ability to measure multiple health metrics at the same time. With One-tap Measuring, users can measure their heart rate, blood oxygen level, stress level, and breathing rate and get all four results in 45 seconds.

The Amazfit GTR 3 duo and Amazfit GTS 3 will track your breathing rate and blood oxygen level when you are sleeping. A new addition is the ability to check sleep data on the watch instead of within the app.

The Amazfit GTR 3 has a 21-day battery life while the Amazfit GTR 3 Pro and Amazfit GTS 3 have a 12-day battery life. The smartwatches are compatible with both Android and iOS devices.

Zepp OS

Zepp OS is the new operating system that is powering the new smartwatches and it replaces the old Amazfit OS. Among the new features it brings are new and faster animations at up to 60fps and app support.

There are 10+ mini apps bundled with the smartwatches such as a water-intake app, calendar, calculator, and a third-party HomeConnect app that allows users to control smart home appliances from their wrists. Zepp Health says there will also be an app that will allow users to control their GoPro cameras using the watch. The manufacturer says there will be a web-based app developer kit for developers to design their own watch faces and apps for the new smartwatches.

Sports features

The Amazfit GTR 3 duo and Amazfit GTS 3 have support for more than 150 sports modes, a significant upgrade from the 90 sports models supported by their predecessors. The manufacturer has also added an eSports mode that will track your heart rate and other biometrics when playing video games.

The new smartwatches also have support for automatic recognition of 8 sports via a feature called ExerSSense. There is still GPS support and Zepp Health says that there is a new GPS chip that is not only 20% faster but 40% more accurate. The chip has support for 5 satellite navigation systems including GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, Beidou, and QZSS.

Price and Availability

The Amazfit GTS 3 and Amazfit GTR 3 are both priced at $179.99 while the Amazfit GT3 3 Pro is priced at $229.99. There is no mention of when the watches will be available for purchase but Zepp Health said the availability of the smartwatches will be split into two batches. You can check the image above for which batch your country falls under.

The GTS 3 will be available in Thunder Black and Moonlight Grey while the GTR 3 Pro will be available in Black and Brown. The Amazfit GTS 3 will be available in Graphite Black, Ivory White, and Terra Rosa.

Canadian government to restrict 5G service around airports, Find out why

The Canadian government had announced that people living around its airports will not have the full complement of 5G connectivity on airport safety considerations. The announcement came just a few weeks after Canada’s telecoms spent $9 billion in acquiring the 5G spectrum license in July 2021. The new announcement could slice a chunk in expected revenue for the telcos and they are voicing their concerns.5G Logo

The move around airports will deprive thousands of 5G users of the full use of their smartphones in the restricted areas because there are fears that the 5G network frequencies could interfere with important navigational devices that could affect safety in the airports. One of the successful telcos, Telus Canada said that the decision could deprive it of up to $100 million in lost revenue. The company says it is indeed surprised that the proposed technical changes would impair a significant amount of the spectrum it won at auction. The comment was filed on September 2 with the country’s Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED). Telus has also noted separately that the mobile industry was taken aback by the move by the Canadian government, and the implications of the policy.

The 5G spectrum licenses were auctioned by ISED and it has stated that it will hold a brief consultation and then put new restrictions in place that will apply to airports where automated landing is permitted. The restrictions will be applied on an individual airport basis. In Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, no 5G stations will be permitted in a broad stretch of space covering parts of Etobicoke, Brampton, Downsview, and Mississippi. Residents in the affected stretches will not be able to enjoy the needed 5G services. The quantum of potential 5G users that will be affected by these new restrictions is still speculative, but this could be huge.

The restrictions are mainly driven by studies that have indicated the potential risks of interference as a result of the 5G connectivity, especially in airports. Some countries have also implemented mitigation measures.

It remains to be seen how the telecom providers will navigate through the thorny restriction regimen and whether there are some remediation measures for the companies. Telus is insisting that there are other options open to the regulator so as not to hurt the interests of the telcos, while still ensuring safety. We expect more fluid movements as the new policy becomes operational around Canada’s airports.

Alibaba and Baidu bet big on Chinese chipmaker Phytium

The global chip shortage coincided with the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and had seen several layers of dislocations in the supply chain globally. It however seems that chipmakers are gradually coming over the shortage with a raft of measures across the production chain. This has seen the expansion of existing capacities and outright building of new chip production processes.

Chinese company Phytium is changing its industrial and commercial registration by adding some heavy hitters like Alibaba, Baidu’s Dazi Bairuixiang Venture Capital Management Company, and China Internet Investment Fund as part of its investors. The company’s registered capital has also increased from 667 million yuan ($104 million) to 749 million yuan ($116.8 million). The new investment alignment will help Phytium to focus on its core area of producing homegrown core chips as the global market continues to boom. According to recent reports, the global artificial intelligence chip market could reach a massive $72.6 billion from its current estimate of $11 billion.

Alibaba and Baidu already have some interests in chipmaking, as both companies have subsidiaries that are focused on chip development. The two companies are just part of a large number of internet giants that are pursuing chip development as part of their business model. Baidu has the Kunlun Chip arm, while Alibaba has the T-Head Semiconductor Co., Ltd with the task of pursuing research and development, as well as the strategic layout of chips.

The new partnership in Phytium is expected to drive the expansion and development of chipmaking capacity in the company to meet local demand and even serve the overseas market.
