Xiaomi may be working on a rollable smartphone with dual side extending display

A new patent has revealed that Xiaomi might be working on a unique new smartphone. The device in the patent is has a rollable display, with the screen extending from either side of the handset.

Xiaomi

According to a PhoneArena report, the patented device features a display that rolls out from both the left and right sides. In other words, the screen of the smartphone extended to become larger. This is unlike a foldable handset, which expands its display area by unfolding and becomes more portable when in its folded state. Looking at the patent images, the display can be seen rolled out from either side, making the display larger. We have previously covered another rollable device patent from the company, which you can check out as well.

This also has the device resemble a tablet and could even offer additional functionality as well. Notably, the extending display could even change the device’s aspect ratios, which might also make the movie or video watching experience from the device better. In its extended state, the rolled out display’s shape is a bit similar to a square, while in its compact form it resembles a regular modern smartphone. Looking at the device from the rear, it appears to have a design similar to the Chinese tech giant’s Mi MIX Alpha Concept smartphone.

Xiaomi

It has a vertically stacked dual camera module on the middle of its back panel, meanwhile, the other portions of the rear extend out from the sides. The Xiaomi patent also highlights the mechanism through which the device rolls out. Similarly, the company’s rival smartphone making brand had also unveiled the Oppo X 2021, which was also a concept device but the world’s first smartphone with a rollable extending display. So, Xiaomi could also be working on its own iteration of the same or might just be covering all bases.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE could release outside the US and Europe with Exynos 2100 SoC

Last week, news broke out that the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE will be delayed until October. Most importantly, the same report said that the smartphone will be limited to the US and Europe. Now, days later, another report reiterates the handset’s launch timeline, however, it suggests a different availability.

According to a report by Maeil Economic Daily (via FrontTron), the Galaxy S21 FE will be released in Q4 2021. The handset was supposed to launch in August. The reason for the delay is none other than the global semiconductor shortage.

Samsung is facing difficulties in procuring the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset for the successor of Galaxy S20 FE. Hence, the older report stated that the smartphone will be only launching in the US and Europe.

But now, the latest report says that the South Korean tech giant will be using its in-house Exynos 2100 SoC alongside the Snapdragon 888 to compensate for the shortage.

Unfortunately, it’s not known what region will be getting which variant of the device. But most likely, Samsung will release the Snapdragon 888 version in the US and Europe since they are the company’s key markets other than its home country South Korea.

As per previous reports, the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE will come with a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with a 120Hz refresh rate, up to 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage, 12MP triple camera setup, 32MP selfie camera, One UI 3.1.1 based on Android 11, 4,500mAh battery, 25W fast wired charging, 15W fast wireless charging, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging.

Windows 11 spotted running on half a decade old Microsoft Lumia 950 XL

Microsoft pushed the Insider’s preview build yesterday, and it has made developers go ahead and experiment with their systems. Keeping aside the usual PCs, a developer went ahead and installed the latest Windows 11 software on a half a decade old Microsoft Lumia 950 XL smartphone, a phone favorite among Windows developers

The developer Gustave Monce successfully installed Windows 11 preview build on the Lumia 950 XL. Not to forget that the handset is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon series chipset and does have ARM-based support. In a video shared by the developer, the smartphone runs the full version of Windows 11 without major issues.

The video further shows the smartphone did lag a bit while opening certain apps, but as compared to the older Windows 10, it had no issues running the latest software. This shows the compatibility of the latest software skin from Microsoft and also paves the way for more ARM-based devices to run the new OS.

Windows 11 Lumia 950 XL

As of now, Microsoft has confirmed that the all-new Windows 11 can run on newer computers – those running Intel 8th generation chipsets and AMD Zen 2 chipsets or higher, and on Qualcomm 7 and 8 Series devices. It also supports ARM-based devices including smartphones and other ARM-based gadgets.

In related news, users have also managed to run Windows 11 on ARM-based Raspberry Pi 4. It was based on a Broadcom processor, which is already compatible with Windows 10. Interestingly, users reported that the latest Windows 11 was faster than  Windows 10 OS.

Huawei Nova 8i with Snapdragon 662 spotted at Geekbench

Huawei is expected to launch the Nova 8i smartphone this month. Ahead of the launch, the Nova 8i has cropped up in the database of the Geekbench benchmarking platform to reveal its key specifications. The Nova 8i’s Geekbench listing further reveals that it has 8 GB of RAM. The Android 10 OS available on the device could be overlaid with an EMUI skin. The handset scored 307 points in the single-core test of Geekbench, while it recorded 1290 points in the multi-core test.

Samsung Galaxy F22 listing on Flipkart reveals that the smartphone will feature a 6.4-inch AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. Previous leaks have revealed that the phone could have HD+ screen resolution (1339 x 720 pixels).

On the back, the phone will feature a quad-camera setup consisting of a 48-megapixel primary camera sensor along with an 8-megapixel secondary sensor, and two 2-megapixel sensors for depth sensing and macro photography.

Huawei P50 live Images show a Sparkling Pink Colorway

Huawei is expected to launch the P50 series sometime in late July this year. Although not officially confirmed, the Chinese smartphone giant is rumored to debut the Huawei P50 phones on July 29 in the home market, China. With all the launch rumors on the way, we saw a few poster leaks of the P50 series last month. Now, we have received live images of the smartphone in a unique shade.

Huawei P50

As of now, it is evident that the series will consist of a few devices featuring multiple cameras. The major highlight will be the huge lenses at the rear. The huge round camera housings accommodate multiple sensors inside. Also, the Pink color, which is something unique in the color palette from Huawei, has a glitter-like shiny sparkling.

Huawei P50 sparkling pink

The device has a Huawei branding at the bottom left and a LEICA branding beneath the huge camera island. The LEICA branding suggests the German brand’s partnership with Huawei. Although LEICA has created a market for the Japanese audience with the Leitz Phone 1, the Chinese market seems to be getting the popular Huawei-LEICA partnership back. It is worth noting that this could be the last partnership between the two brands.

The phone has three sensors in the upper camera bulge and a periscope camera with a dedicated LED flash in the lower camera bulge. It has another regular-sized LED flash, probably for the other three sensors.

Aside from this, the Huawei P50 series is expected to be powered by the 5nm based Kirin 9000 chipset for the home market and Snapdragon 888 flagship chipset for a few of its siblings in the series. Notably, it is said that the Snapdragon 888 in a few P50 phones will be an LTE-only version.

Motorola Edge 20 series may launch by July end

Last week, reliable leaker Evan Blass shared the full specifications of upcoming Motorola phones that are codenamed as Berlin/Berlin NA, Pstar, and Kyoto. It is speculated that these phones may release in the market as Motorola Edge 20 series phones. Blass has now claimed that these smartphones will debut by “very end” of this month.

It is likely that the Berlin and Berlin NA phones may release with Edge 20 moniker. The NA model is reportedly aimed towards North American on Verizon, and the Berlin model is heading to the global markets. Both smartphones are powered by the Snapdragon 778G chipset, but the global model appears to be a downgraded edition of the North American model as it has a smaller display and battery. However, the global model has better cameras than the NA variant.

While the new Edge 20 models are expected to launch by July end, there is no official confirmation yet from Motorola.

It has been confirmed that the smartphone will be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1100 chipset and up to 12GB of RAM. We are also expecting an 8GB RAM model of the device and the phone is likely to have 128GB and 256GB of internal storage.

Alleged iPhone 13 prototype shows redesigned rear cameras

Apple has largely maintained the same design for the iPhone for a few years now with slight changes, and it appears that will be the case again this year. A photo alleged to be that of the iPhone 13 has been posted on the internet and it shows some of these small design changes.

iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro

The source of the image is said to be a leaker that goes by DuanRui (via MyDrivers) and the photo shows two Apple-branded devices in white. One has dual cameras and is believed to be the iPhone 13 while the other with three cameras is the iPhone 13 Pro.

For the iPhone 13, the squircle camera housing remains unchanged, so also is the number of sensors. However, rather than having the cameras on top of each other like those on the iPhone 12, they are arranged diagonally. Also, the LED flash has been moved to the top while the microphone is now at the bottom. It is a small but noticeable change.

iPhone 13 front

There is also a difference in design on the front. Unlike the iPhone 12 that has a slit for the earpiece on the same line as the sensors and front-facing camera, the iPhone 13 has its slit closer to the frame. Other design changes reported include a slightly thicker body and a smaller notch.

While these images look legit, we still advise that they be taken with a pinch of salt until more evidence surfaces.

Nintendo Switch Pro to feature 8nm processor codenamed “Dane”

The Switch Pro is a rumored upcoming console from Nintendo. There have been multiple reports about the handheld gaming console which is expected to launch as the successor to the original Switch announced in 2016. New details of the console have now surfaced.

According to the leaker that goes by kopite7kimi on Reddit, the Switch Pro will be powered by a processor codenamed “Dane”. This may sound like a conflicting statement to an earlier report that revealed the chipset is codenamed “Black Knight”. It turns out both details are correct.

Nintendo Switch

Apparently, both “Dane” and “Black Knight” are one and the same. NVIDIA is known to codename its chips after Marvel Comics characters, and those who are well versed in comic lore will know that the real name of the Marvel character that goes by “Black Knight” is Dane Whitman. FYI – the character is set to appear in the upcoming Marvel’s Eternals movie and will be played by Kit Harington who is best known for his portrayal of Jon Snow in Game of Thrones.

It has also been reported that “Dane” is an 8nm chip which is a big upgrade from the 20nm chipset that powers the original Nintendo Switch. Even the 2019 refresh of the console features a 16nm chipset. The advantage of a smaller node size means better power efficiency and performance. This should translate into longer battery life for the upcoming console when compared to the first-gen model.

The latest report about the launch date for the Nintendo Switch Pro states that the console will not launch this year but next year. It remains to be seen if this is true.

Anker’s Apex Thunderbolt 4 Dock features a 90W power pass-through and dual HDMI ports

Anker is following up on the teaser it gave earlier in the year and has now provided greater details about the specifications of its latest offering – the all-new Apex Thunderbolt 4 Dock. The Thunderbolt 4 Dock comes with many impressive features that place it at the high end of the spectrum.Anker’s Apex Thunderbolt 4 Dock

Anker launched the Thunderbolt Dock Mini in 2020, and it has had a fair reception up to date, although there were some practical drawbacks from the device concerning the versatility of the ports on offer. It would seem that the observed deficiency of the Thunderbolt Dock Mini has been resolved excellently in the latest offering, as the dock sports 12 different ports for a variety of functions.

The Anker Thunderbolt 4 shares the same design philosophy as the Thunderbolt Dock Mini, although there are some areas of departure. Twelve ports, including its signature 90W Thunderbolt 4 port, can provide charging resources for the lineup of Apple Macbooks and other Windows devices. Two HDMI ports are also available, together with three USB-C, four USB-A ports, and a Gigabit Ethernet port, all combine to deliver a flexible and great design. It also has an improved I/O functionality which places the Apex Thunderbolt 4 Dock at the top of the spectrum.Anker’s Apex Thunderbolt 4 Dock

The dock looks to be well-kitted with some impressive features to provide solid output and versatility for its users. It has an 8K display with a 30Hz refresh rate, a 4K display with a 120Hz refresh rate, and a combination of these can yield 30Hz refresh rates. Multiple monitors can be connected simultaneously on the device.

As stated earlier, the Apex Thunderbolt 4 Dock is presently available on Amazon US and it is priced at $299.99. This also places it on the high end in comparison with other current models with coordinate functionality and features. However, we would expect the device’s great features to steer it to success in the market despite its cost.

ET Telecom reports that Xiaomi is expected to hike the price of smart televisions in India by 4-6% from July. For those unaware, companies have been increasing the price of TVs in the country since the beginning of this year.

According to the publication, the upcoming TV price hike by various brands will be the third round in the last six months. Companies have already increased the price of their televisions by 10-12%. The year 2021 marks the highest price hike of televisions in a single year.

The main reason for the increase in TV price is due to the prolonged shortage of ‘Open Cell’ (panel) globally. ‘Open Cell’ accounts for almost 70% of the cost of a television. India mostly imports them from China and Vietnam.

Recently, Xiaomi hiked the price of the Redmi Note 10 in the country for the third time. This was due to the increase in the price of supplies. As per industry experts, the cost of chipsets, battery packs, and others (camera modules, sensors) have increased by 20%, 10%, and 5% respectively.

Lastly, as per Debasish Jana, research analyst at Counterpoint Research, If this trend continues, it may affect demand in India as a result of the country’s economic situation caused by the second wave of COVID-19.

Hero Cycles launches the first Made-in-India electric bike in Germany

There has been a rise in electric bikes as an alternative transportation mode across the world. The rising demand for e-bikes in the European market has led Indian company Hero Cycles to deliver its first batch of made-in-India e-bike dubbed Hero Lectro to Germany as it targets the EU market.Hero Cycles

The delivery of the first made-in-India electric bikes to Europe is a milestone for Hero. It is pursuing its investment and expansion plans to get up to half a billion Euros from its Europe adventures by 2025. Chinese manufacturers and local European companies are dominating the European fast-growing two-wheeler electric vehicle (EV) turf. But Indian companies could be seeking a piece of the European pie as competitors to Chinese manufacturers. India has seen a rapid increase in the number of startups producing e-bikes, while some established manufacturers like Hero are shifting attention to this area.Hero Bike

India is fast rising in the development of small electric vehicles and systems. As a result, it can indeed leverage its development strides that had seen the country dominate the global motorcycle and tricycle market with some heavy-hitting companies. In addition, the policy climate in India is encouraging the blossoming and production of electric vehicles as a solution to the transportation challenges.

The coronavirus pandemic could be viewed as a proximate factor that contributed to the growth of the two-wheeler EV industry, as demand for such products grew during the pandemic. Many persons preferred to avoid crowded vehicles and sought the individuality of commuting within their cities using e-bikes. Their affordability and compact nature also endeared the e-bikes to many across the world.

To advance its European aspirations, Hero Cycles will pursue its quest to become a new leader in the European market, thus squaring up with leading Chinese manufacturers. The absence of a stringent tariff regime for Indian bikes could give Hero Cycles a competitive edge over its Chinese counterparts. Hero also hopes to leverage its massive manufacturing capacity and resources as the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer.

Hero Cycles will hope to scale up its manufacturing capacity and exports to Europe over the next few years for it to get close to the leading Chinese manufacturers. Innovation will undoubtedly drive this pursuit, and Hero is already focused on that aspect. Hero recently partnered with Gogoro to deploy Gogoro’s innovative battery swapping system and infrastructure that could expand the range and versatility of Hero’s e-bikes.
