Huawei continues to lead global telecom equipment market with increased revenue

Chinese tech giant Huawei, which continues to struggle because of the restrictions imposed by the United States, still managed to lead the global market when it comes to telecommunication equipment.

Market research firm Dell’Oro Group recently published a report about global telecom infrastructure market for the fourth quarter of 2020. While Huawei led the market, the overall market witnessed a 7 percent year-on-year increase.

Global Telecom Equipment Market 2020

The report reveals the the top seven supplier companies in this segment, which include Huawei, Nokia, Ericsson, ZTE, Cisco, Ciena, and Samsung. All these companies accounted for about 80 percent to 85 percent of the overall market. It also reveals that Huawei’s market share has increased by 2-3 percent points through the year 2020.

On the other hand, Ericsson and Nokia have increased their RNA market share outside of China. Further, the report adds that revenue for these companies continue to be affected because of the status of deployment of 5G communication technology, especially in the highly concentrated market.

Samsung Galaxy S21 sales marks a four year high for the flagship series

The Samsung Galaxy S21 series has seen great sales recently. The company has sold over 590,000 units of the premium grade handset lineup, which is the highest it has ever recorded since the Galaxy S8 that sold over 620,000 units.

According to a GSMArena report, this marked a new high for the South Korean tech giant in the past four years. Within the first month of the new series going on sale, the Galaxy S21 lineup shipped nearly twice as many units in comparison to the Galaxy S20 series from last year. Furthermore, analysts from South Korea revealed that the primary reason behind high sales was Samsung’s ability to expand its 5G presence while keeping the price tag in check compared to the predecessor.

To elaborate on this, the base model of the Galaxy S21 starts from 990,000 KRW (roughly 870 US Dollars), which is about 20 percent lower than the base Galaxy S20, which costs around 1,248,500 KRW (roughly 1,100 US Dollars). Similarly, the company also saw great success in the mid range segment thanks to its Galaxy A31, which became the best selling handset in its home market. Furthermore, the demand for low end smartphones was much higher last year, as people preferred more affordable devices during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Huawei mulls partnership to transfer 5G tech to Indian company: Report

Huawei is apparently planning on partnering with an Indian company. This partnership would involve the manufacturing of 5G equipment, which would also include the transfer of technology to ease security concerns that the local government would have over the company.

Huawei Logo MWC 2019

According to a TelecomNews report, the Chinese tech giant is willing to bring 5G equipment manufacturing to India, alongside another Indian company. For those unaware, Huawei is a major telecom equipment maker, and one of the leaders in 5G networking. Thus, the company’s official even asked the Indian government to provide a “level playing field.”

As per Huawei India CEO, David Li, “We are now very much open and willing to partner with a local company. We are looking for a local partner and for commercial reasons, we don’t want to disclose any details. We can bring our software or hardware modules and enable a (local) partner to manufacture equipment.” Furthermore, the senior executive also asked the Indian government to clear the uncertainty regarding Huawei’s participation in the 5G trials.

Li has called on the Indian government to clear the uncertainty regarding the company’s participation in the region, asking the government to consider its “clean” record of the last 20 years in the country. He further added that “It is uncertain now… The government wants to address security concerns, but that should be based on facts and global standards. We hope the Indian government will give us a level playing field to participate in the (5G) trials.”

Apple’s next product launch event expected to take place on March 23

Apple usually announces its new products in the month of March since past few years and the company is expected to follow the tradition this time as well. And it seems that the event might clash with another major launch event from a well-known brand.

As per the new reports, Apple is expected to host an event to launch new products on 23rd March. This is the same day when OnePlus will be announcing its next-generation flagship smartphone — the OnePlus 9.

The upcoming Apple event on 23rd March is expected to be a virtual event and the company could launch the iPad Pro 2021 lineup as well as a few other products, including the AirTags which have been delayed a few times.

The Apple iPad Pro 2021 is expected to have an optional support for 5G connectivity and could be powered by the A14X Bionic chipset, which is reported to be capable of matching the performance of Apple M1 chip used in the new Mac devices.

There are also reports about Apple working on a new version of the iPad Mini which could be called iPad Mini Pro. However, the device is unlikely to get launched this month. The company is also said to be adopting Mini-LED display panels for the new iPads.

There’s a possibility that the new third-generation AirPods could also get launched at the event later this month, along with a new Apple TV. While both of these products are ready for launch, it is not yet confirmed if they will be launched at this event.

It is speculated that the OnePlus 9 Pro will be equipped with a 48-megapixel + 50-megapixel + 8-megapixel + 2-megapixel quad-camera system. The OnePlus 9 may feature a triple camera system led by a 48-megapixel and it may come with a 16-megapixel front camera. Apple to soon start manufacturing iPhone 12 in India

Apple, which started manufacturing iPhone SE in India through its partners, has now expanded it to produce iPhone XR and iPhone 11. Now, the company is reportedly planning to start making iPhone 12 in India.

In an effort to reduce its dependence on China, Apple has been expanding its production facilities across several regions and one of such market is India. A new report from Business Standard claims that Apple will soon start producing iPhone 12 in India.

iPhone 12

As per the report, the Cupertino-based giant is planning to initially shift about 7 percent to 10 percent of the iPhone 12 production to India from China. The company is also considering to move the manufacturing on iPhone 12 Mini to India but Apple has not yet made a final decision.

The iPhone 12 models manufactured in India will be available for purchase in the domestic market and will also be exported. With local manufacturing, the company will be able to avoid paying heft import tariffs. However, it remains to be seen if Apple decides to pass on the benefits to the customers, which it hasn’t done in the past.

But passing on the benefits to the customers could mean a bit lower starting price for the iPhone 12 in India, giving it a boost in the market. Apple has been trying to expand its footprints in India and this could be a gateway to have a significant market share.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 successor to reportedly feature Leica technology

Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 is the current flagship chipset from the company and now it is working on a stripped-down version of the same, which is expected to come without the support for 5G communication.

The company had recently launched the Snapdragon 870 and it is not yet known how the upcoming chipset will differ from the SD870 SoC. However, the chipset is likely to be based on the 5nm process and meant for markets where 5G is still not available.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 888

Additionally, Qualcomm has also started working on the Snapdragon 888 successor which is internally known as “Waipio” and has a model number SM8450. It is expected to get launched by the end of this year.

Roland Quandt says that the company is testing samples compatible with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of storage. What’s interesting is the camera capabilities of the chipset which is expected to get a major boost.

It is being reported that the upcoming flagship chipset from Qualcomm will come with Leica technology and for this, both the company has entered into a partnership. Currently, they are testing on a module named “Leica1.”

For those who are unaware, Leica is a German company that manufactures cameras, lenses, binoculars, rifle scopes, microscopes and ophthalmic lenses. Huawei has been using the Leica lens for its flagship devices since past few years and has been appreciated for its camera performance over the years.

The current-generation flagship chip — Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 is manufactured by Samsung using the 5nm process. It remains to be seen if the company opts for a 4nm node for the production of its successor.

Lenovo Legion 2 Pro with Snapdragon 888 and 16GB RAM spotted at Geekbench

Last week, Lenovo released the first teaser of the upcoming Lenovo Legion gaming smartphone. The teaser revealed that the handset will come equipped with a dual turbo cooling system for heat dissipation. A new Lenovo smartphone with model number L70081 powered by a flagship chipset has appeared on the Geekbench benchmarking platform (via. Abhishek Yadav). It seems that the L70081 could be the next-generation gaming smartphone from Lenovo. It is yet to be confirmed whether it will be launching as the Legion Pro 2 or Legion 2 Pro.

The Lenovo L70081’s Geekbench listing shows that it is driven by the “lahaina’ codenamed Qualcomm chipset that has a base frequency of 1.80GHz. The codename is associated with the Snapdragon 888 mobile platform.

Lenovo L70081 Geekbench

The SD888 chip is coupled with 16GB of RAM. The device is preinstalled with Android 11 OS. In the single-core and multi-core tests of Geekbench, the handset scored 1130 and 3779 points, respectively.

At present, there is no information available on the other specs of the Legion Pro 2. Since it has appeared on Geekbench, it seems that the Chinese firm could be internally testing the performance of the device. Probably, it could be planning to launch its next gaming phone in Q2 this year.

Samsung Galaxy F62 vs Samsung Galaxy M51 vs Xiaomi Mi 10i: Specs Comparison

Samsung started releasing incredible battery phones. We are not talking about good battery phones with 5000 mAh like the concurrence, but devices with mammoth 7000 mAh batteries that can even provide four days of battery life on a single charge with moderate usage. The handsets we are talking about are the Samsung Galaxy F62 and the Samsung Galaxy M51. Unfortunately, they do not have 5G connectivity, but their battery life is amazing. Here is a comparison between these two battery phones in which we also brought the Xiaomi Mi 10i just in case you are looking for a 5G battery phone in the same price range.

Design

The most attractive design is offered by the Samsung Galaxy F62, in my honest opinion. The phone has a less invasive camera module with the same color as the rear cover. But unlike the Xiaomi Mi 10i 5G, it does not come with a glass back. The Gorilla Glass 5 rear side of the Xiaomi Mi 10i provides a more premium feel. Further, the Xiaomi Mi 10i 5G is a thinner phone. None of these devices has a premium design, unlike flagship phones, but they are not disappointing in terms of aesthetics.

Display

The Samsung Galaxy F62 and the Galaxy M52 have the same display: a 6.7-inch panel with the Super AMOLED Plus technology and a Full HD+ resolution. It is actually a better display than Xiaomi Mi 10i 5G and it has an in-display fingerprint scanner. On the other hand, the Xiaomi Mi 10i 5G provides a higher 120 Hz refresh rate which is great for gamers and it has the HDR10 certification for better image quality on streaming services.

Specs & Software

If you need the best performance, then you should go for the Samsung Galaxy F62. Despite not being powered by a Qualcomm chipset, it has a more powerful SoC: the Exynos 9825. But unfortunately, you do not get 5G connectivity with the Galaxy F62. If you want 5G, you must choose the Xiaomi Mi 10i equipped with a Snapdragon 750G SoC, up to 8 GB of RAM, and UFS 2.2 native storage. The Xiaomi Mi 10i 5G is actually more powerful than the Galaxy M51.

Camera

The Xiaomi Mi 10i 5G has the best main camera: a 108 MP sensor with an f/1.8 focal aperture. The Samsung Galaxy F62 and Galaxy M52 feature better secondary sensors (ultrawide, macro, and depth) and they have the same camera departments. They also come with better selfie cameras.

Battery

Samsung Galaxy F62 and Galaxy M51 pack the same huge 7000 mAh battery, and the battery life should be similar. The Xiaomi Mi 10i 5G has a smaller battery and a shorter battery life, but it charges faster.

Price

The starting prices of the Samsung Galaxy F62 and Samsung Galaxy M51 are €270/$320 and €320/$379. The Xiaomi Mi 10i 5G starts from just €250/$296. If we consider the whole specs sheets, Samsung Galaxy F62 is the best one especially due to its powerful chipset. Xiaomi Mi 10i 5G has a better camera and 5G, but a smaller battery and an inferior display to both its rivals.

Huawei to unveil its flagship 5G tablet alongside the P50 series next month

With the US sanction seriously restricting the activities of Huawei in its rollout plans for its smartphones due to massive chip shortage, the company has been seeking innovative alternatives to overcome the chip blockade and is set to release the P50 series in April 2021. The models are expected to come in limited quantities mainly due to the chip blockade by the US government.

HUAWEI MatePad 5G 10.4 Dark Ash

The interesting part of the coming launch is the reported release of the Huawei MatePad Pro 2 5G tablet also in April 2020. The MatePad Pro 2 5G tablet is Huawei’s flagship 5G tablet offering cutting edge functionality and great features. Powered by the Kirin 9000 high-end chipset, the MatePad Pro 2 5G would run on the PadOS operating system, which was developed along the lines of Huawei’s homegrown HarmonyOS operating system.

Reports say that two versions of the 5G tablet will be available at launch – one with a 12.2-inch Hua Xing display, and a second model with a 12.6-inch Samsung display. The two models have a 120Hz refresh rate, together with a battery expected to be more powerful than previous smartphones released by Huawei.

Inside sources say that in trying to overcome the debilitating US restrictions, Huawei will be using a lighter version of the flagship Kirin 9000 chipset (called Kirin 9000E) on the P50 model. The main difference between the two chipsets is in the Neural Processing Unit (NPU). While the NPU of the Kirin 9000 has two large cores, that of the lighter Kirin 9000E has a single large core. In addition, both chips have the Mali-G78 GPU, but having 24 cores for the Kirin 9000 and 22 cores for the Kirin 9000E. We can’t say for sure if the MatePad 2 5G will equally launch with a Kirin 9000E under the hood.

Japan deploys vending machines to help scale up COVID-19 testing in a safe manner

Japan is reputed as the country with the highest number of functional vending machines per capita in the world. The country is looking at an effective way of putting its estimated 4.1 million vending machines into the fight against the coronavirus pandemic by selling rapid test kits via the machines.COVID 19

The move is expected to scale up testing beyond the 40,000 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests that are being carried out daily across the country. It is also aimed at conserving critical public healthcare manpower that should be deployed to other areas for a more targeted battle against the pandemic.

The citizens had been at the mercy of private healthcare providers as the only alternative for testing before the deployment of the vending machine model. Therefore, vending machines configured to sell test kits are an effective way of avoiding the crowding at public and private healthcare facilities and waiting to be attended to. This was the view of Hideki Takemura, director of the Laketown Takenoko Ear Nose and Throat Clinic which has already deployed seven vending machines in parts of the capital, Tokyo.

According to Takemura, the country was carrying out a very low number of PCR tests which made it difficult to have a true picture of the extent of the pandemic in the country and even affected the recovery effort.Japan

The vending machine model was a huge success at the early stages as the machines had high patronage, and in some cases, had to be emptied of cash and restocked due to the inflow of citizens who needed to be tested. While the vending machines are still popular, there had been a lull in their demand as the country continues to battle another wave of the pandemic.

The process of testing begins when a person purchases the test kit from the machine at about $40, which will then be used to collect the person’s saliva sample and then mailed to the laboratory for analysis.
