Fake AirPods Pro Hands-On Review: $59 KnockOff Earbuds gets very close to the real deal

Apple released the AirPods Pro last week with Active Noise Cancelling and a hefty $249 price tag. The first two generations of the AirPods received a tremendous response and the Pro model is also getting rave reviews. Personally, we loved its noise-canceling and overall fit and sound quality.

However, just like every other popular Apple product in the market, the launch of the AirPods Pro also gave rise to fake AirPods Pro models in the market.

fake airpods pro earbud comparison
Can you guess which one is fake?

And today, we take a closer look at one of the first FAKE AirPods Pro in the market: APods Pro. It’s so similar to the AirPods Pro that you’ll have a hard time figuring out which one is the real deal. Don’t worry though, we’ll point out a few subtle differences to ensure you can differentiate between the two.

APods Pro Case is almost identical to the original AirPods Pro Case

It’s been just over a week since the AirPods Pro was officially announced in the market. Yet, the APods Pro has managed to copy the original Pro model’s case and earbud design, down to the fit and pop-up notification on the iPhone!

different-6-copycat stem-a blue light shining

Starting off with the case, the APods Pro looks exactly like the original AirPods Pro case. The Apple case is a bit more polished than the fake ones, but in general, it’s hard to tell them apart. Down below, you get the same USB-C port like the original Apple AirPods Pro. However, come to the back, and you’ll see the “Designed By Apple In California” text on the back of the original AirPods Pro case. The fake APods Pro case has no writing.

If you think things are going to get easier to distinguish between the two after opening up the case, you are wrong. The APods Pro earbuds look nearly identical to the original Apple Pro earbuds. However, there are a few subtle differences to tell them apart.

case-open-side
Fake APods Pro (L) vs Original AirPods Pro (R)

For example, when you open up the APods Pro case, the two cavities that house the two earbuds are a bit different. While the fake case has oval cavities, the original AirPods Pro have rounder cavities. Also, the fake ones open only up to 90 degrees while the original AirPods Pro case can open nearly up to 120 degrees.

different-4-openning angle
Fake APods Pro (L) vs Original AirPods Pro (R)

Another major difference is the notification LED light on the left earbud. The fake APods Pro comes with a Blue LED light that shines when charging in the case or when you take it out to connect to your iPhone. In comparison, the original Apple AirPods Pro has no notification light.

Fake APods Pro (L) vs Original AirPods Pro (R)

The APods Pro Earbuds are even more similar to the original AirPods Pro

One surprise was that the APods Pro managed to mimic the original AirPods’ pop-up notification on the iPhone when you opened the case. It looks close to the real deal!

Apple AirPods Pro
Fake APods Pro forces the same pop-up notification on the iPhone as the original one

When you take out the fake APods Pro, the head and steam are designed to ensure it looks very close to the original AirPods Pro. The fake earbuds are lighter than the original ones, but design-wise, it gets full marks in mimicking Apple’s design. You won’t be able to easily differentiate between this knockoff and the original one.

Fake APods Pro (L) vs Original AirPods Pro (R)

But there are two differences that set them apart. The charging contacts at the bottom are slightly different and the nozzles are also quite different. The original AirPods Pro comes with a black nozzle while the fake one has a traditional white nozzle.

Original AirPods Pro (L) vs Fake APods Pro (R)

However, in terms of fit, the APods Pro comes very close to the original Apple earbuds.

APods Pro Sound Quality Is TERRIBLE

With so many similarities, you would have probably hoped that the APods Pro at least had decent sound quality.

fake airpods pro earbud comparison
Fake APods Pro (L) vs Original AirPods Pro (R)

But like most fake or knockoff Apple products in the market, the APods Pro sound terrible! The sound output is hollow and bass is non-existent. In case you are wondering, there’s no active noise canceling either. I guess they spent so much time copying the design that the ran out of budget for a decent pair of sound drivers inside.

So please don’t think about buying the APods Pro for its sound quality.

On a positive note, the APods Pro has a pretty strong Bluetooth connection and the latency is pretty good as well. So you shouldn’t have trouble gaming on your phone using these earbuds.

APods Pro Is Cheap!

Fake APods Pro (L) vs Original AirPods Pro (R)

The APods Pro is cheap at $54. However, unless you are really looking for something that’s identical to the original AirPods Pro, we can’t recommend buying the APods Pro.

At $59, there are much better alternatives in terms of sound quality (even Xiaomi’s AirDots Pro is so much better sounding than this).

Samsung to significantly increase foldable phone production next year

Despite the major fiasco with the Samsung Galaxy Fold at the beginning of 2019, the device is rumored to be faring quite well in most markets. A few media outlets have reported that the Galaxy Fold went out-of-stock soon after being released. Samsung is yet to meet its shipment target of a million units. However, it aims to sell plenty more foldable devices in 2020.

According to Samsung’s CEO DJ Koh, “We plan to significantly increase sales of the Galaxy Fold next year.” Samsung has been testing the market with its different iterations of a foldable smartphone, the latest being the clamshell form factor. Speaking at the annual Samsung AI forum in Seoul, Koh said, “Consumers will witness a large number of foldable smartphones next year”. This statement hints at Samsung’s plans to launch more than one foldable smartphone in 2020.

Galaxy Fold 4G

According to a rumor from a few weeks ago, Samsung plans to sell upwards of 6 million foldable smartphones globally by the end of 2020. DJ Koh did not comment on the statement. Hence, its authenticity is currently unconfirmed. Samsung allegedly was aiming for 10 million units in 2020, but the figure was later corrected to be more realistic. The demand for foldable smartphones is fluctuating at the moment. Nonetheless, Samsung believes foldable display technology is the future of smartphones.

As for when Samsung plans to introduce the next foldable smartphone, Koh said more details will be unveiled shortly, without committing to a tentative deadline. Samsung is not the only company to be working on foldable display technology. But, with its latest innovation, the company is ahead of major competitors like Apple. Whether customers adopt foldable smartphones remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Samsung needs to iron out the creases with the Galaxy Fold. Certain users have reported the formation of tiny specs on the display within a few hours of use, while another user claims the letters on the Samsung branding began falling out. These are major quality concerns for a smartphone that is priced upwards of $1980. Hopefully, Samsung comes up with a solution soon.

Huawei is expected to soon unleash its flagship tablet called MatePad Pro. Previous reports had claimed that it could be MediaPad M7. Recent reports that have carried the images of the tablet have revealed its design and color variants. A listing of the tablet has been reportedly spotted at the 3C certification agency. It reveals that the device will be equipped with support for up to 40W fast charging.

The above shown screenshot reveals that the MRX-W09 and MRX-W19 are the model numbers of the upcoming MatePad Pro. The ‘MRX’ text in the model number refers to ‘Marx’ codename of the tablet. The two model numbers could belong to the LTE and Wi-Fi editions of the MatePad Pro. The 3C listing reveals that the device could be shipped with HW-100400C00 charger that can support up to 40W Huawei SuperCharge rapid charging like the recently introduced Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro.

Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei says the company doesn’t need United States

Huawei, the Chinese giant is still stuck in-between the US-China trade war and is still on the “Entity List” by the United States which bars the company from doing business with US-based firms.

Now, Huawei’s CEO Ren Zhengfei said that the company can survive without the United States and has dismissed Washington’s campaign against it as ineffective. In an interview, he said: “We can survive very well without the U.S. The China-U.S. trade talks are not something I’m concerned with.”

Ren Zhengfei said Huawei isn’t a factor in the trade war because “we have virtually no business dealings in the U.S.” He also said “there has been no confrontation with the U.S.” and said he would welcome a visit from Donald Trump now or after he has left office.

Huawei, which is the world’s largest maker of networking equipment and the world’s second largest smartphone vendor, has also emerged as a central issue in the trade war, and Beijing has insisted on a reprieve as a condition for any deal.

Last year, the Chinese giant bought $11 billion of technology from American suppliers—including software from Alphabet Inc. and Microsoft Corp. , and chips from an array of manufacturers. Huawei has now moved to find backup sources and at the same time, the company is working on its own chips and software.

Huawei executives say the company is building its entire portfolio of 5G networking products without any American technology, at a clip of 5,000 base stations a month. The company’s CEO adds that “we don’t expect the U.S. to remove Huawei from the entity list. They may as well keep us there forever because we’ll be fine without them.”

However, the company’s executives say Huawei is still buying technology from American companies. Chips made by U.S. companies at factories offshore, for example, generally aren’t subject to the U.S. restrictions. This has allowed several American companies, including chip makers Intel and Qualcomm to resume sales to Huawei. Will Zhang, Huawei’s president of corporate strategy, said that the purchase of U.S. technology is at 70% to 80% of its previous level.

Despite efforts from the U.S., Huawei continues to win 5G contracts around the world, while its smartphone sales are booming, especially in its home country China. The smartphone sales are surging despite uncertainty over its continued access to Google’s Android operating system.

While Ren initially forecast a $30 billion revenue hit from the blacklisting for two years, but the company has said revenue for the first nine months of the year was up 24 percent. The United States is defending its actions against Huawei by citing concerns that Beijing could use its equipment for spying.

It also says Huawei would be legally bound to comply with requests for customer data from Beijing. However, Ren has repeatedly denied spying on customers for any government and has said he would deny any such requests from Beijing and insisted that the company has no access to the data that flows through it networks.

WeChat unblacklisted for Google Pixel 4, will now run at 90hz

Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL featured

A few weeks ago, we wrote about how some apps had been blacklisted by the Pixel 4. This meant they couldn’t run on the Pixel 4’s 90Hz refresh rate since they would completely drain the battery. When the phone is on a lower brightness, the 90Hz Smooth Display is disabled and switches to 60Hz only. It’s understandable now because it’s all for the best.

Originally the Pixel 4 had identified these four apps not to run at 90Hz: Google Maps, Pokemon GO, Waze, and WeChat. While most of these are graphics or resource intensive apps, WeChat is an outlier in that it’s just a chat client. The reason that the refresh rate is throttled down is simply due to the app’s poor performance at 90Hz refresh rate setting.

pixel rom

Before you experience the change on your Pixel 4 or 4 XL, however, there are still a couple of hurdles that you have to get past first. WeChat, which is still on version 7.0.5 in the Play Store, needs to be updated and released. And second, Google has to integrate the new blacklist into one of its monthly security patches before sending them out to everyone. Unfortunately, yesterday’s November security patch did not come with the newer list.
