OnePlus 6, 6T, 5 and 5T Android 10 rollout schedule for China officially confirmed

OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro that will be unveiled later today will be the first OnePlus phones to arrive with Android 10 preinstalled. The Chinese manufacturer is working on making the latest version of Android available to other OnePlus phones. Today, OnePlus co-founder and CEO Pete Lau confirmed on the rollout schedule of Android 10 for OnePlus 6 series and OnePlus 5 series of smartphones in China.

Android 10 has been already made available to OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro smartphones in some regions like India. The update was based on OxygenOS custom ROM by OnePlus. For users of OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro in China, the company rolled out the public beta of HydrogenOS based Android 10 on Sept. 13. The stable version will be rolled out in mid-November in the country.

Users of older OnePlus phones have been eagerly waiting to know when their devices will be treated with the latest edition of Android 10. Lau has revealed that the Android 10 public beta for OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T users in China will be made available in late October. The official version will be arriving to the OnePlus 6 series in late November.

Android 10 for OnePlus 6, 6T, 5 and 5T schedule

The official version of Android 10 will be arriving to OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T users by second quarter of 2020 in China. OxygenOS builds are known for arriving shortly after the release of HydrogenOS builds. However, there is no official confirmation yet on the OxygenOS based Android 10 updates for OnePlus 6, OnePlus 6T, OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T phones.

The HydrogenOS builds do not feature Google Play services. On the other side, OxygenOS editions that are made available outside of China are equipped with Google apps. By launching the OnePlus 7T and 7T Pro phones today, OnePlus will become the first OEM to release a phone with Android 10 OS along with Google apps. The recently unveiled Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro are also preloaded with Android 10, but they do not feature Google apps mainly because of the trade ban imposed by the U.S.

Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha confirmed to have an official smartphone case

Xiaomi recently unveiled its Mi MIX Alpha concept smartphone that offers a massive 180.6 percent screen-to-body ratio, highest among any mobile phone launched in the market so far, thanks to the wraparound display.

Now, Xiao Zhiyuan, Director of Marketing for Xiaomi’s mobile phones has confirmed through a post on Weibo that the Mi MIX Alpha smartphone will be getting an official mobile case for the protection.

Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha featured
Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha is like a permanently folded phone

However, he has not revealed more details about this. It also remains to be seen how the case will work, given that majority of the smartphone is a display except for bar-like module on the back that houses the camera sensors.

Coming to the smartphone, the Mi MIX Alpha is the world’s first smartphone with a curved display that wraps around almost the entire device. Except for the tiny vertical strip that houses the camera at the back, the display surrounds the entire smartphone, including the sides and the back.

This is a single display panel of 7.92-inch that wraps around the entire body bringing the screen to body ratio to a staggering 180.6%! This is made possible also because of the extremely narrow 2.15mm bezels on the top and the bottom.

The device is confirmed to be powered by the Snapdragon 855+ processor with 5G dual SIM support. There will be at least one version with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.0 storage. The battery isn’t very large at 4,050mAh but it does support 40W fast charging just like the Mi 9 Pro 5G.

It is also the world’s first smartphone to feature a 100MP+ resolution camera sensor. This is made possible by using the Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX 108MP camera sensor at the back of the device. The sensor was developed in close collaboration with Xiaomi, hence it’s no surprise that we are seeing it first on the Mi Mix Alpha 5G.

MiMix Alpha featured

The 108MP primary sensor on the Mi Mix Alpha is ultra-large with a 1/1.33″ sensor which is capable of outputting 12032 x 9024-pixel resolution images. It is coupled with a 12MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom and a 20MP ultra-wide-angle camera lens.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha will be produced on a very small scale on a trial basis at first. The company has priced it at a staggering 19,999 Yuan (~$2814), which is even more than Samsung’s new foldable smartphone.

Red Magic 3S to get global launch on October 16

The Red Magic 3S launched early this month in China. The gaming smartphone from Nubia isn’t so different from the Red Magic 3 save for the slightly more powerful Snapdragon 855 Plus inside. It has been reported that the phone will be getting a global release next month.

Android 10 (Go Edition) arrives with new features and new encryption

In 2017, Google announced Android Go, a lightweight version of Android for devices with 1GB RAM or less. While Android Go is still a lite version of Android, there is now an Android Go device with 2GB of RAM. Today, Google has announced Android 10 (Go Edition) and it brings Android 10‘s exciting features and more.

Android 10

Android Go phones will get Dark Mode, new gestures, and some other features of the full version. Google also says app load times are now 10% faster compared to Android Pie (Go Edition).

One major new feature is support for Adiantum Encryption. This is specially made for phones with low resources. It doesn’t require special hardware but keeps Android Go devices secure just like other more powerful Android phones. The encryption process is said to not negatively affect system performance.

Android Go is also smaller than previous versions. Its  Go apps (Google Go, Gallery Go, Files Go) are said to also be smaller in size now, allowing for more space to be available to the user.

We do not know when current devices running Android Pie (Go Edition) or older will get the update as that wasn’t mentioned. However, we will ask you not to raise your hopes. The Redmi Go, which is one of the more popular Android Go smartphones is still running Android Oreo (Go Edition) even though it launched after Android Pie (Go Edition) was released.

At the moment, HMD Global seems like the only manufacturer that will update its existing Android Go phone such as the Nokia 1 Plus to Android 10 (Go Edition). Other manufacturers will probably release new models running it out of the box.

Android Go is available in over 180 countries and on more than 1600+ models with different prices. More devices running the latest version are expected to be announced next year.

Redmi 8A vs Honor 8A vs Realme C2: Specs Comparison

Xiaomi just came up with a new entry-level smartphone belonging to the most affordable price segment: the one under €100/$100. We are talking about the Redmi 8A which is clearly one of the best smartphones ever released in its price range. A lot of people are already thinking it is the best device you can get with the lowest budget, but is it really true? In order to understand it, we compared it with the other popular entry-level smartphones from the best Chinese brands. We chose Honor 8A (or Honor Play 8A) and Realme C2 for this comparison as we believe they are among the phones with the highest value for money in the entry-level sector.

Design

Xiaomi renewed the design of the whole Redmi line-up this year, including the Redmi 8A. But, at least according to my tastes, the Redmi 8A is not the best option when it comes to aesthetics. Besides sporting an original back with a “prismatic pattern”, the Realme C2 is also a more compact phone than the Redmi 8A, that is why it is my favorite one. On the other hand, even if Redmi 8A is a slightly bigger phone, it has a higher screen-to-body ratio, and that is why some may like it more than its rivals. But note that in each case, you get a device with a plastic body.

Display

The displays of these smartphones are just acceptable. They all come with a standard HD+ resolution, definitely nothing special, but not disappointing. On the paper, Realme C2 and Redmi 8A offer slightly better panels. But not any of them has what we can call an above-average display. So you’d better go ahead and pay attention to other specifications.

Specs & Software

In terms of performance, the Snapdragon 439 chipset looks slightly better than the Helio P35 found on the Honor 8A. But it is just a marginal difference. What you should consider more is the amount of internal storage: the Honor 8A comes with up of 64 GB of storage, while Redmi 8A stops at 32 GB. The Realme C2 loses this comparison because it is equipped with a lower-end Helio P22 chipset. All come with Android 9 Pie out of the box and we already know that Redmi 8A will be soon updated to MIUI 11.

Camera

The 12 MP Sony sensor on board of the Redmi 8A makes it the best camera phone of the trio with a bright focal aperture and very detailed photos, even when light conditions are not the best. The phone also features a pretty nice front camera. Realme C2 has a dual camera and, while its main sensor is not at the same level as the Redmi 8A, the secondary sensor allows capturing depth info better. Even Honor 8A is an interesting camera phone in its price range, but I personally prefer the main sensor of the Redmi 8A.

Battery

The presence of a 5000 mAh battery on the Redmi 8A will make it last three days on a single charge even with pretty intensive usage. It wins the battery comparison and it will probably be one of the longest-lasting phones of this year. Redmi 8A is also the only phone here to support fast charging. The silver medal goes to the Realme C2 which is not the best battery monster of this trio but still features a huge 4000 mAh battery, that is a lot for a phone with an entry-level chipset and an HD display.

Price

As you already know, the price is the strongest point of these handsets. You need just €77/$84 to grab a unit of the Realme C2. Redmi 8A starts from just $91/€83, while Honor 8A costs about €100/$110 globally. At the end of the day, there is no challenge: Redmi 8A is definitely a better device due to its bigger battery, amazing SoC (for the price range) and great cameras. Realme C2 takes the second place.

Yet another Huawei laptop lineup joins the Linux club!

The ongoing trade war between China and the U.S. has left Huawei scrambling for alternative suppliers for its products. The recently announced Mate 30 series comes without Google Apps despite running on the new Android 10 iteration. Similarly, Huawei and Honor’s notebook lineup is being relaunched with Linux on board. Today, another one of Honor’s MagicBook 2019 lineup joins this Linux club.

After the Honor MagicBook Pro, the Honor MagicBook 2019 Ryzen lineup is also getting a Linux version. This particular version naturally starts at a much cheaper price tag than the Windows model. While the Windows 10 powered Ryzen 5 model with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD is priced at 3999 yuan ($561), the Linux version is 300 yuan ($42) cheaper for the exact same configuration.

The Honor MagicBook 2019 Ryzen edition running on the Linux platform was first made available for sale earlier today. All the units were picked up quickly and at the time of publishing this article, the model was out of stock. Unfortunately, Honor hasn’t revealed how many units were put up for sale today.

Huawei has tied up with Deepin, a Chinese software brand with a beautiful and polished desktop Linux distribution. The company already has a bunch of laptops like the Huawei Matebook X ProMatebook 13 and Matebook 14 running on this Linux distribution. Just like this MagicBook 2019 Ryzen Linux edition, the other Linux based Matebook laptops are priced 300 yuan (~$42) less than the Windows 10-running models.

Honor MagicBook 2019 Ryzen Linux Edition

While we may see a future where Huawei’s HarmonyOS makes it to laptops, for now, this Linux based distribution seems like a decent alternative to Microsoft’s Windows 10 OS.

OnePlus 7T leaks reveal Glacier Blue and Frosted Silver colours

The OnePlus 7T Series is all set to be announced tomorrow, but thanks to a recent leak, we now know what colors the two devices will be coming in. The leaks come from two sources, Roland from Winfuture.de and Ishan Agarwal, a popular leaker on Twitter. Both have had excellent track records when it comes to leaks, so we don’t doubt these leaks for a second.

According to the leaks, the OnePlus 7T is going to come in Glacier Blue and Frosted Silver. Meanwhile the OnePlus 7T Pro is going to come in just Glacier Blue. This is a change from the OnePlus 7 Pro which came in a Nebula Blue instead, though there doesn’t seem to be much of a difference outside of Glacier Blue looking a bit more washed out.

It’s still a blue gradient, which looks really nice. Going from a lighter blue at the bottom to a darker blue at the top. Now, the colour itself isn’t really anything all that new seeing as we’ve already seen other leaks of the OnePlus 7T last week in all its blue glory. What is new however are the official names for both colour options.

The Frosted Silver on the other hand is essentially just the default black, but slightly more interesting. For those that want a more subtle colored smartphone, that’s the one to get. Like the Glacier Blue, it is also sporting a gradient, going from a dark gray at the bottom to a bright silver at the top.

Glacier Blue OnePlus 7T Pro

Over on the front, it’s interesting to see that the OnePlus 7T is still going to have a notch. The Pro variant sticks to the pop-up camera we liked from the OnePlus 7 Pro, so it’s a conscious decision by OnePlus here to add value to the Pro model. We’ve also learned that the Pro will feature a QHD+ display, while the standard variant will keep a FHD+ display.

OnePlus is going to be announcing the OnePlus 7T Series and the brand new OnePlus TV tomorrow. September 26. The event kicks off at 10:30AM EST, so we’ll know everything there is to know by then. Before then, you can check out our rumor roundup to get a general summary of all the leaks thus far.

The Mate 30 series’ official cases are cool, but these 3rd party ones are hilarious!

The Mate 30 series already launched in Europe last week but they will be available for purchase first in China after the launch tomorrow. The Huawei official China website already has the phones listed in addition to some official cases which we haven’t seen before.

Huawei hasn’t revealed the price for any of the cases. Once they do, we will update the post

While the official cases are actually cool and stylish, its the third-party cases (above) that we are most excited about as they find innovative and funny ways to use the Mate 30 series’ halo ring camera design. Photos of these third-party cases have surfaced on Weibo and we absolutely adore them.

Visionox is Chinese Smartphone makers’ new Favorite for developing Experimental Displays

Xiaomi stunned everyone with its Mi Mix Alpha concept yesterday featuring a 360° wraparound display. It’s basically a permanently folded curved screen device. Looking at its beautiful curved display, we may assume that it’s from big-league OLED makers like Samsung, LG, or even BOE. But turns out, Xiaomi worked very closely with China’s Visionox to bring this curved screen design to reality.

A top-rated digital blogger and supply chain source, Mocha revealed on Weibo earlier today that Visionox and Xiaomi developed the Mi Mix Alpha concept together. So it was none of the big names like Samsung or BOE (Mate X display supplier) that brought such an experimental design close to a commercial release. Xiaomi’s product director Wang Teng Thomas didn’t deny this claim. He replied to the post saying that Xiaomi works with multiple OLED panel makers including Visionox.

visionox mi mix alpha supplier comment

Visionox may not be a household name when it comes to OLEDs, but the company’s roots go back to the strong OLED project team of Tsinghua University, one of the most prestigious universities for science and technology in the world. What’s even more interesting is that he revealed Visionox is also going to supply OLEDs to Huawei very soon.

It looks like Visionox has become China’s new favorite for developing experimental displays. Apart from the Mi Mix Alpha concept, Visionox is also supplying flexible OLEDs for Xiaomi’s dual folding smartphone. Further, the flexible AMOLED display for ZTE’s Axon 10 Pro is also supplied by the same company.

Nubia Alpha also comes with Visionox’s flexible display

But Visionox is also part of another experimental product, coincidentally, also called as the Alpha. In case you still haven’t figured it out, I’m talking about the Nubia Alpha, the foldable watch shaped smartphone, that features a four-inch flexible display from Visionox. The Chinese OLED maker currently has around 6,000 OLED patents to its name and has two plants, one in Gu’an, Hebei province, and another one in Hefei, Anhui province for manufacturing flexible OLED panels.

Asus’ new adolbook14 is “the world’s first metal gradient laptop”

ASUS computers don’t pop up here often, but when they do it’s because they’ve got something interesting, and that’s just the case here. The Taiwanese company has revealed the adolbook14 and it is calling it the world’s first metal gradient notebook. Asus is heavily marketing it as a fashionable PC, so let’s take a closer look.

Now, gradient colors aren’t exactly unusual. They’ve been widely used for various products, most commonly smartphones. According to Asus however, the adolbook14 is the first time any company has ever combined gradient aesthetics with metal notebooks. Now, we aren’t 100% sure of that, but it certainly looks nice.

The adolbook14 is equipped with either a 13.3-inch or 14-inch 1080p 16:9 display that has a  4.1mm narrow frame and a screen ratio of 87.4%. The shell is colored with nano-scale water-based environmentally-friendly paint. It’s also fairly light at 1.3KG, and it’s quite thin too at a mere 16.5mm. There’s a backlit keyboard here too, which is always good.

There are decent options when it comes to I/O, even considering the device’s thinness. We’ve got a 3.5mm headphone jack, an SD card reader, a USB 2.0 port, an HDMI video out port, a USB 3.1 port and a USB-C port. While the number of ports available isn’t all that impressive, the sheer variety is pretty good.

When it comes to other specs, the adolbook14 is equipped with up to a 10th generation Core i5-10210u processor. There are many different configurations for the RAM and storage, capping out at 8GB of RAM and a 256GB M.2 SSD. There’s a 72Wh battery, which the company claims can give up to 20 hours of video playback.

The prices here vary depending on the variant chosen, with prices ranging from 3599 yuan ($502) to 4999 yuan ($702). It’s actually a decent price for a notebook like this from a decently big manufacturer. As for how the adolbook 14 actually performs, we’ll need to wait until review units start to pop up. They’re available from Asus’ JDmall store, so take a look.

MediaTek MT5670 Smart TV chipset launches a day before OnePlus TV

While there are folks that won’t pick up a phone powered by a MediaTek processor, they probably own a device powered by a chipset made by the Taiwanese company in their home. MediaTek not only makes processors for phones but also make processors for products like Blu-Ray players, smart TVs, routers, and smart speakers including those from the Amazon Echo line. Today, the semiconductor company unveiled a new processor – the MT5670 – for smart TVs.

MediaTek MT5670

The announcement comes just a day before it appears in its first product – the OnePlus TV. Yes, the OnePlus TV which will be unveiled in India tomorrow will be powered by the new MT5670 chipset. Leaked specs of the TV as well as a Google Play Developer console page revealed that the TV will be powered by the processor.

The new chipset, which was unveiled in New York, has four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.8GHz and an ARM Mali-G51 GPU. MediaTek says the new processor will “deliver true studio-quality video”, and automatically adjust sharpness and quality using facial and scene recognition with its AI picture quality (AI PQ) technology. It also supports MiraVision technology and MDDi de-interlace solution for smooth picture quality. Below is a full list of features of the new processor:

  • Android TV 9 support
  • Worldwide multi-standard analog TV demodulator
  • ATSC/DVB-T/DVB-C/ISDB-T demodulators
  • UHD@60Hz direct drive
  • 3D graphic support OpenGL ES 1.1/2.0/3.1/3.2
  • A transport de-multiplexer
  • A multi-standard video decoder (including VP9)
  • Rich format audio codec
  • H.264 encoder
  • HDMI 2.0 receiver with 3D support

MediaTek adds that the MT5670 will be available globally in smart TVs launching this month. So there is a possibility we may see it in another product other than the OnePlus TV later this month.

The MediaTek MT5670 is less powerful than Amlogic’s new T972 processor which powers Xiaomi’s new Mi Full Screen TV Pro. The 12nm Amlogic processor has the more powerful and efficient Cortex-A55 cores (quad) clocked at 1.9GHz as against, the MT5670’s Cortex-A53 cores. However, the Amlogic chipset has the entry-level Mali-G31 GPU while the MediaTek chipset has the mid-range Mali-G51 GPU.
