Honor 9X Pro is now getting the upgraded AI Super Clear Mode for better camera performance

According to the latest information coming from Honor, the Honor 9X Pro smartphone is about to get an upgraded AI Ultra Clear Mode, which is basically an algorithm that comprises of Super Resolution Reconstruction and AI HDR.

The new feature improves the resolution by super-resolution SR algorithm and the dynamic range of the image is further improved by the AI HDR algorithm. As per the report, compared to the normal mode, the improvement with this new feature is about 10 percent to 20 percent.

Honor 9X Pro Super Clear Mode

The Super Resolution Reconstruction combines multiple low-resolution images, and the sub-pixel displacement information between each pixel in the photos to estimate the missing points of the high-resolution image. Simply, multiple images with lower resolution are generated and combined to make a new high resolution image.

On the other hand, the AI HDR refers to AI-powered High Dynamic Range that is reflected in the photo which details the highlight and dark areas in the image. The larger the dynamic range, the richer the level and the AI HDR enhances the image through a deep learning network to achieve local dynamic range adjustment. This makes the picture look more natural and vivid.

The Honor 9X Pro comes with a metal and glass combination chassis and features an LTPS IPS LCD display of 6.59-inche. The notch-less display offers Full-HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9.

It is powered by the 7nm Kirin 810 chipset that includes 2.27GHz octa-core processor and the device packs up to 8GB of RAM and native storage of up to 256GB. The EMUI 9.1 based Android 9 Pie operating system comes preloaded on the device.

On the back, there’s a triple camera unit that includes an f/1.8 aperture 48-megapixel primary lens, an 8-megapixel ultrawide lens with f/2.4 aperture, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor with f/2.4 aperture. It also features a pop-up selfie camera of 16-megapixel.

Connectivity features of the smartphone include dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, USB-C and 3.5mm audio jack. It is also equipped with a side-mounted fingerprint reader. The Honor 9X Pro is powered by a 4,000mAh battery with 10W charging support.

Huawei Mate 30′ retail box leaks, reveals specs

The Huawei Mate 30 series will be announced in Munich on September 19. Ahead of the release, images of the Mate 30’s retail box has surfaced on the web. The images are reported to have been shared by a reviewer who got a prototype.

The Mate 30 will come in an uninteresting black box with the name of the phone inscribed in gold. The words “SuperSensing Camera” is written right next to Leica’s logo.

The sticker on the side reveals the Mate 30’s model number is TAS-AL00 and this version has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. This was the highest configuration available for last year’s Mate 20 but we can’t say if that will be the case again this year. Nevertheless, there should be support for storage expansion via Huawei’s proprietary Nano Memory card slot.

The box also shows the phone supports TD-LTE. Chances of a 5G version of the Mate 30 are slim, so don’t expect one.

The Mate 30 will have a smaller notch than the Mate 30 Pro, just like its predecessor last year. However, Huawei has switched from a waterdrop notch to a  rectangular one if this photo of a leaked tempered glass is genuine. Inside the notch will sit two cameras.

The phone will be powered by Huawei’s new Kirin 990 processor. There are reports it will have support for fast charging this year and not via an add-on accessory like the Mate 20.

Huawei executive says U.S. needs to talk with the company for China trade deal

Amid the US-China trade war, Huawei has been targeted by the United States to have an upper hand in the deal-making process. The trade war, which has been on-going since the past few months, has not seen any major progress in terms of reaching a deal.

Now, a top executive of the Huawei Technologies Co. has said that in order to reach a deal in the US-China trade war, the United States will need to hold talks with Huawei. The company’s Chief Security Officer Andy Purdy said, “Can I imagine a trade deal where the U.S. government doesn’t agree to talk to us? No I can’t.”

Huawei building featured logo

He also said that the crackdown from the US government is hurting American companies and workers more than it hurts Huawei. He added that the company spent $11 billion on U.S. supplies last year and an estimated 40,000 U.S. jobs depend on its business.

Purdy further said that Huawei wants “transparent mechanisms” for evaluating its equipment and that of its competitors, which would build “trust through verification.” He added, “We’re not asking we should simply be allowed to sell without any scrutiny. We believe there has to be scrutiny for everyone.”

The Trump administration has put Huawei on the “Entity List” through an executive order which barred the Chinese giant from using any of American companies hardware and softwares, among others. It essentially cut-off Huawei from having access to vital supplies such as chipsets from Qualcomm and Android mobile OS from Google.

Along with banning Huawei in its country, United States is also urging other countries and companies to reject Huawei technology in the next generation of wireless networks, citing national security risk without providing any proof for the allegations. Huawei, on the other hand, has denied any wrongdoing and has even accused the United States of singling it out for political reasons.

Xiaomi crowdfunds a cheap Bluetooth Key Finder with two-way search function

It is a common occurrence in most homes that the car key gets misplaced either by the kids or even daddy. Interestingly, such a scenario usually plays out when you are in a hurry either to drop the kids at school or catch up with an important appointment. Xiaomi has launched a product that will effectively put an end to the loss of keys and other valuables.Xiaomi Heli Bluetooth Keyfinder

The product is a Bluetooth key finder but it can be attached to other products especially small stuff that can go missing easily. As the name implies, the gadget comes with Bluetooth connectivity and can be paired with a smartphone easily. It has a light design and a high-decibel buzzer.

The device also comes with an anti-lost reminder which makes it buzz when the device is out of range from the smartphone. There is also a two-way mutual search, and a “collective search” mode. The mutual search feature allows the owner to search for the gadget from a smartphone and equally search for the smartphone using the key finder. There is a mobile app that will need to be installed to use this feature. On the other hand, to search for the smartphone, all you need do is press a button and the mobile phone will ring out, even when it is put on silent mode. Another interesting addition to the Bluetooth object finder is that it can be used as a Bluetooth remote to take selfies. xiaomi

As for the pricing, the Bluetooth key finder comes with a crowdfunding price tag of 99 yuan (~$14). No word yet on its availability especially outside China but just bear in mind you may likely only get the product via third-party retailers like GearBest, Banggood etc.

TENAA: Redmi 8A gets a bigger screen and a 5000mAh battery too

Earlier today, images of the Redmi 8A surfaced on the web, thanks to a partial TENAA listing. The full-listing has now been published and it reveals the full specs of the upcoming phone.

The Redmi 8A with model number M1908C3KE will be packing some big upgrades. First, the display gets a massive bump from 5.45-inches to 6.217-inches and the resolution is now 720 x 1520. This will be sad news for those who have always liked the series for its small form factor.

Redmi 8A TENAA

There is a 2.0GHz octa-core processor under the hood. The Redmi 8A will come in 2GB, 3GB, and 4GB RAM variants with 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB of storage respectively. The phone will have support for storage expansion and TENAA says maximum capacity is 512GB.

A single 12MP camera sits on the back while an 8MP camera sits in front for selfies. What is weird is that the TENAA listing says there are a total of 3 cameras on the device. This is most likely an error.

The Redmi 8A will not only get a bigger display but a bigger battery to match. TENAA says the battery capacity is 5000mAh. The phone runs Android 9 Pie just like its predecessor.

The dimensions are given as 156.3 x 75.4 x 9.4 millimeters and the weight is 188 grams. The listing says it will come in black, red, blue, pink, white, green, purple, gray but we know only three or four color variants will be available.

There are unconfirmed reports that Xiaomi will announce the Mi MIX 4 on September 24. It is highly unlikely that Redmi will announce the Redmi 8A and Redmi 8 smartphones at the event. The Redmi 7A got a silent launch back in May, the same thing might happen again with its successor.

(Note: The phones below have been ordered randomly)

1Samsung Galaxy A90 5G

A lot of people would never expect Samsung to announce a brand new 5G flagship smartphone at IFA 2019, but the Korean giant did it, a few days after the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 series in the global market. Unlike all the other handsets from the A-series, the Galaxy A90 5G is the only flagship not belonging to the S or Note line-ups. It is equipped with a Snapdragon 855 chipset and it comes with a wide 6.7-inch display boasting the AMOLED technology and a Full HD+ resolution. It also sports a triple rear camera and a 4500 mAh battery.

2Nokia 6.2 and 7.2

Both Nokia 6.2 and 7.2 are new mid-rangers by HMD Global. Among their highlights, there are HDR displays and a rear triple camera equipped with Carl Zeiss on the Nokia 7.2. They both come with 600-series Qualcomm’s chipset: Snapdragon 636 and Snapdragon 660, respectively. And they both have 3500 mAh batteries, as well as Android One out of the box based on Android 9 Pie. They are going to hit the market with price tags of €200 and €300, respectively.

3Nokia 2720 and 800 Tough

Nokia 2720 and 800 Tough are not smartphones: HMD Global decided once again to launch old-school feature phones. The first is a retro flip phone, while the second is a rugged phone with an IP68 rating and a MIL-STD-810G certification. Given that they are feature phones, battery life is undoubtedly their strong point. But despite not being smartphones, they still maintain some smart features thanks to the operating system KaiOS. Besides coming with a camera, they also have 4G connectivity and they support a few important apps such as WhatsApp, Facebook and Google Maps.

4Samsung Galaxy Fold

After delaying its launch several times, during the IFA 2019, Samsung finally announced the launch of the Galaxy Fold in the global market. The company made some tweaks in order to make its first foldable phones more resistant and avoid every kind of display issues. So now the handset finally went into commerce with a sturdier body. It is currently available in South Korea, but in a few days, it will hit select international markets with a price tag around €2000. Unfortunately, not every country will get it.

5Sony Xperia 5

During its keynote at IFA 2019, Sony officially unveiled the Xperia 5: a compact iteration of its last flagship Xperia 1. We can define Sony Xperia 5 as the only really compact flagship released in the second half of 2019 globally, given that it is powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset. Sony already started accepting pre-orders in a few European countries with a price tag ranging from €800 to €850 depending on the market.

After an initial phase of reservations, the phone went on sale two days ago in China with a starting price of CNY 2,999 which roughly translates into $419 at the actual change, for the configuration with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage.

The ROG Phone II was already official, but Asus took advantage of the IFA 2019 to launch it in the global market. The handset also came in a new configuration called Ultimate Edition equipped with 1 TB of internal UFS 3.0 storage. Before this launch, the ROG Phone 2 came with a max 512 GB of internal storage. It comes with a revamped dual-screen accessory adding another display which is the same as the main phone’s display, as well as a monochromatic mini display on the external part, showing time, date and notifications.

10Motorola One Zoom and E6 Plus

Despite launching a couple of phones in Asia, Lenovo unveiled a camera-focused device called Motorola One Zoom, which is equipped with a quad-camera setup on its rear side. It is a mid-ranger, but it provides outstanding camera capabilities thanks to OIS, quad pixel technology for amazing low light performance, and a telephoto sensor with 3x optical zoom and OIS. OnePlus will fix ‘Background App Management’ issues and promote Custom ROMs for EOL devices

OnePlus conducted the Open Ears Forum in Goa, India back in May 2019. OEF is a good platform for developers and OnePlus community to come forward and discuss everything about OnePlus and its devices. While it’s been nearly four months since the event, the mods on the OnePlus forums have finally revealed the company’s commitments towards the points raised at the event.

OnePlus 6 featured

Despite its delay, the commitment points from the Open Ears Forum reveal some interesting changes. One of the highlighted points at the event was the aggressive background app management by OxygenOS to save battery. This was a pain point for a lot of developers as it meant many apps were getting killed in the background. The company has promised a solution to this issue in the upcoming updates.

⇒ Editor’s Pick: OnePlus will release a 90Hz Screen Phone that’s cheaper than the OnePlus 7 Pro

Another interesting point raised at the event was about End of life (EOL) OnePlus devices. The company has committed to promoting custom ROMs on OnePlus Forums as well as on its social media platforms for its EOL devices. This comes in as a pleasant update for old OnePlus users whose phones are at the end of their update cycles. Despite OnePlus’ excellent update policy (even OnePlus 3T got Android Pie!), all phones have an expiry date for their official support. And when it ends, custom ROMs come as a savior to offer new features as well as updates to such abandoned models.

OnePlus 6 featured

Other commitments made by OnePlus after the event include releasing Kernel sources on time for all builds including Open Beta build, introducing a bounty program for reporting security vulnerabilities, and organizing more OnePlus community meetups in the future.

Smartphone models like the OnePlus 3 and the 3T are set to lose their official software support soon and this new policy by OnePlus could mean users have better access to custom ROMs for their devices.
