Samsung Galaxy Fold’s fate will be decided ‘in a couple of days’, says Samsung CEO

Earlier this year, Samsung officially unveiled its much anticipated and futuristic smartphone — Samsung Galaxy Fold, the company’s first foldable smartphone. The phone was all set to go on sale from 26th April but just a couple of days before sale, it was postponed.

Now, Samsung CEO DJ Koh has revealed that the South Korean company will confirm the foldable’s revised release date in a matter of days. He also said that the defect was caused from substances that entered the device and the official conclusion will be reached in a couple of days.

Samsung had earlier sent out review units of the Galaxy Fold but within a day or two, many reviewers started complaining serious issuus related to the phone’s display. In a statement, the company said that it will thoroughly check the affected devices but has not hinted about the delaying the launch.

However, after negative press, the company announced its plan to postpone the launch and confirmed that the decision to delay the release of the Galaxy Fold smartphone was taken based on the initial feedback.

As for the specifications, the Samsung Galaxy Fold smartphone presents a 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Display with a 1536 x 2152 resolution. In this mode, you can use three apps at the same time which Samsung calls Three-app Multitasking.

OnePlus 7 Pro has an improved vibration motor

OnePlus 7 series smartphones are set to go official on 14th May globally and the company has already teased features of the devices. Thanks to teasers and leaks, we already know almost everything related to the upcoming flagship smartphones — from specs and design to pricing.

However, the latest information regarding the OnePlus 7 Pro is new and it’s related to the phone’s vibration motor. As per the report, the company has ramped up the quality of the vibration motor on the OnePlus 7 Pro.

Oneplus 7 Pro
Oneplus 7 Pro

This is a major reason to rejoice for the existing OnePlus customers who have criticized the vibration motor on the OnePlus smartphones for years, mainly because of its weakness and inconsistency of the vibration.

In an interview with CNET, OnePlus founder and CEO Pete Lau said, “We are constantly listening to feedback from the community on what features and characteristics they would like to see implemented on OnePlus phones. Their feedback helps us focus on certain features… Our team had to rethink the internal design of the OnePlus 7 Pro, to fit inside the body without increasing the thickness of the device, which could lead to a less ergonomic feel. At the same time, we had to ensure that the haptic motor was in the right position so that the haptics would be strong, yet even across the device.”

The company claims that to power more intense and precise vibrations, the OnePlus 7 Pro needed a larger motor than past models. As per the company, this new engine is 200 percent stronger than previous iterations.

The device also offers three customizable vibration settings for notifications — “light,” “medium,” and “strong.” The motor’s vibration pattern has an additional six settings, and users can “tune the vibration” to tailor how the keyboard feels while typing.

The smartphone will come with a triple camera setup on the back and a pop-up front-facing camera. It will be powered by Snapdragon 855 octa-core chipset and will feature an AMOLED display with 90Hz refresh rate.

OPPO, Vivo and OnePlus are smartphone brands that belong to China’s BBK Electronics. While OPPO seems to have planned May end launch for its OPPO Reno series launch in India, OnePlus will be debuting the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro smartphones on May 14. It is speculated that that the iQOO flagship phone will be also coming to India in June. Since they are all powered by Snapdragon 855 mobile platform and carry similar specs, these brands may end up rivaling with each other in Indian market.

OPPO Reno Specifications

The OPPO Reno standard edition phone has a 6.4-inch notch-less OLED screen shielded by Gorilla Glass 6. The display is embedded with an in-screen fingerprint reader. The smartphone is fueled by Snapdragon 710 mobile platform.

The rear shell of the phone features a 48-megapixel + 5-megapixel dual camera setup. A selfie snapper of 16-megapixel with LED flash is placed inside a “shark-fin” shaped pop-up camera module. Two Redmi flagship phones coming; Storage, RAM and color variants revealed in leak

Recent reports have revealed that Redmi is gearing up to launch its flagship phone. An Indian publication has revealed that Redmi will be launching two flagship phones in this month. Also, it has shared the storage, RAM and color variants of both phones.

Both the Redmi flagship smartphones are expected o arrive in four variants such as 6 GB RAM + 64 GB storage, 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage, 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage and 8 GB RAM + 256 GB storage. They are expected to release in three color option such as Carbon Fiber, Blue and Red. The leak has no information on the pricing of these variants.

POCO F2 Coming?

The names of the upcoming Redmi phones are not known yet. However, one of them has appeared on the database of Singapore’s IMDA authority with M1903F10G. Popular tipster Ishan Agarwal has claimed that the model numbers of the upcoming Redmi flagship phones are M1903F10 and M1903F11. He added that the Poco F1 had “E10” in its model number which suggests that M1903F10 Redmi phone could end up as Poco F2 outside of China. At least, the M1903F10 model could be powered by the Snapdragon 855 SoC.

M1903F10G IMDA

It is unlikely that Redmi will launch two flagship phones with powered by the same Snapdragon 855 SoC. Hence, the other model could be an inferior model featuring the Snapdragon 730 SoC.  The Redmi SD855 flagship phone is expected to arrive with a notch-less 6.39-inch AMOLED display with full HD+ resolution that could be embedded with an in-screen fingerprint reader.

Redmi flaghisp phone

The smartphone may sport a 20-megapixel pop-up selfie snapper. It could be equipped with a triple camera setup featuring 48-megapixel Sony IMX586, superwide and telephoto lenses. The handset may include a 4,000mAh battery that may allow the phone to last for up to 2 days. It may carry support for 27W rapid charging. NFC and 3.5mm audio jack are the other features of the smartphone. Probably, the SD730 Redmi may carry similar specs and cheaper pricing.

Readers are advised to digest the report with a pinch of salt. With the launch expected this month, more details on the Redmi flagship phone may appear in the coming days.

Mi Fit app gets new look after latest update

The Mi Fit app is the official app for Xiaomi and Huami‘s (Amazfit) activity trackers and smartwatches. It also works with a bunch of other smart fitness products made by Xiaomi and its partner companies such as the Mi Smart Scales and smart shoes made by 90, Li-Ning, Kangnai, and Sprandi. The app was updated on Wednesday, May 8, and the update brings a new User Interface and some new features.

The new update gives the app a “Xiaomi -Orange” paint job but there is still a lot of white too. The important details such as your sleep activity, heart rate, and weight are now summarized in a centralized box instead of separately. Selecting any one of them will open a more detailed breakdown of the parameter. The images below show the difference in UI between the old version of the app (Left) and the new version (right).

[envira-gallery id=”252472″]

The changelog for the app on the Play Store says the data view has been optimized and the app now supports more types of workouts. However, there are already some reviews faulting the new user interface and the multiple “clicks” required to get to certain details which used to be at the forefront of the old app.

Chinese firms lead global 5G patents applications with Huawei at the helm

Samsung beat OnePlus to reclaim top spot in India’s premium segment

A report by Counterpoint Research on Wednesday indicates that Samsung has risen to the top of India’s premium smartphone segment in the first quarter of 2019 spurred by the Galaxy S10 sales. This is coming after the Korean giant had lost the top spot to OnePlus for three quarters in a row. huawei

The underlying take-up for the Galaxy S10 arrangement drove Samsung to the number one position in the premium segment, said the statistical analytics firm. OnePlus came second as its seasonal cycle near. However, the OnePlus 6T retains its title as the best-selling premium smartphone in the first quarter of 2019, a title it has held since its launch last year.

The top three premium brands in India in Q1 2019 including Samsung, OnePlus and Apple accounted for 90 percent of the shipment made in the segment. Other smartphone brands like Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo share the rest of the 10 percent of the market share. However, Apple, however, is still struggling to curtail its decline as a result of its excessive pricing. The company may start manufacturing iPhones in India in order to save 20 per cent import duty on its devices, the report added.

According to Karn Chauhan, Research Analyst, Mobile Devices at Counterpoint, “The success of Galaxy S10 series and OnePlus 6T highlights the trend of an expanding premium segment in India.” He also added, “Users who are buying their second or third smartphone are already considering an upgrade into the premium segment. Another reason for the growth in the premium segment is a plethora of offers and installment plans available.”

Huawei P Smart Z vs Huawei P30 Lite vs Honor 20 Lite: Specs Comparison

If you are searching for the best smartphone for quality-price ratio, you have a lot of choices to evaluate in Huawei’s line-up. The company recently announced its most famous mid-range phones of the year: Huawei P30 Lite and Honor 20 Lite, from the main series to its core business and its sub-brand. Yesterday, the Chinese giant even launched its first smartphone with a pop-up selfie camera, and it is a mid-ranger as well: we are talking about the Huawei P Smart Z. Is it worth choosing this brand new and different device from the P Smart series or it is better to opt for the P30 Lite or the Honor 20 Lite? This comparison will help you find out.

Design

The design is undoubtedly the main focus of the Huawei P Smart Z. As said above, it is the first Huawei’s phone with a pop-up front camera, which allows the display to reach a screen-to-body ratio close to 100 percent without the need of a notch, neither a punch-hole display. A trend launched by Vivo with the NEX, and it is becoming one of the most used solutions to get rid of bezels around the display. Further, the Huawei P Smart Z comes with a very attractive Google Pixel-like back cover composed of two pieces of different colors. Huawei P30 Lite and Honor 20 Lite are still very beautiful with their waterdrop display and their stunning glass backs available in gradient hues, but Huawei P Smart Z is definitely more original and innovative.

Display

Even when it comes to the display, Huawei P Smart Z is my favorite one. It has a wider 6.59-inch panel which is more comfortable for multimedia and productivity, as well as high brightness, good viewing angles, and no notch. It is still a midrange-class panel, but it is definitely more interesting than Huawei P30 Lite and Honor 20 Lite. On the other hand, Huawei P30 Lite offers a smaller and more compact display (easy to use with one hand) with similar quality.

Specs & Software

Huawei P Smart Z is powered by the new Kirin 710F chipset, while Huawei P30 Lite and Honor 20 Lite are equipped with the Kirin 710. According to Huawei, these two processors offer the same performance but different packaging processes. So, what really makes the difference is the memory configuration. And under this point of view, Huawei P Smart Z loses the comparison. Indeed, Huawei P30 Lite and Honor 20 Lite (Chinese version only for the latter) come with up to 6 GB of RAM, while Huawei P Smart Z stops at 4 GB. In each case, you get Android Pie out of the box customized by EMUI.

Camera

Again, Huawei P Smart Z is the loser here. It has an average dual camera and it is far from being a true camera phone. In its most expensive variant, with its triple camera setup composed of a main 48 MP sensor, an 8 MP ultrawide lens and a 2 MP depth sensor, Huawei P30 Lite wins the camera comparison. But if we consider front cameras, then Honor 20 Lite is better with its astonishing 32 MP selfie snapper.

Battery

Alongside its innovative design, the battery is the strongest point of the Huawei P Smart Z. It wins the battery life comparison thanks to a big 4000 mAh unit, while Huawei P30 Lite and Honor 20 Lite are equipped with average 3400 and 3350 mAh batteries.

Price

Honor 20 Lite costs €299/$335 in the global market (4/128 GB), Huawei P Smart Z costs €280/$315 (4/64 GB) and Huawei P30 Lite starts from €290/$325 (4/128 GB). Overall, Huawei P Smart Z looks better due to its big battery, bigger display, and more innovative design. But if you want higher-end cameras, then go for the Huawei P30 Lite.

Android Q brings Adaptive Sleep for some Beta 3 users

Two of the features Android Pie brings are Adaptive Brightness and Adaptive Battery. Android Q brings another one called Adaptive Sleep.

Some of those who have installed Android Q Beta 3 have discovered the new feature under the settings menu. If you are running Android Q Beta 3, search for Adaptive under the settings menu. If it is available for you, it should be among the search results.

Adaptive Sleep

The description for Adaptive Sleep says “Your screen would not dim and go to sleep if the device detects your present attention.”. From the description, it appears the phone will be able to detect if you are looking at it even if you are not touching it and prevent the screen from going to sleep.

This is similar to Samsung‘s Smart Stay which launched with the Galaxy S3. The feature made use of the phone’s front-facing camera to know if the user is looking at the screen.

Meizu 16S unit found without Processor Adhesive, Company provides compensation

Meizu was recently embroiled in a controversy regarding its brand new Meizu 16S flagship. The phone was recently subjected to a teardown by XYZone, a popular Weibo user from China. After taking a look at the internals, he found out that his Meizu 16S unit didn’t have adhesive around the Snapdragon 855 processor soldered onto the board. Considering how most flagships in the market come with this adhesive for the processor, he said that this was probably a cost-saving move by the company.

Meizu 16S processor adhesive

Meizu initially denied the claim, however, when the issue snowballed, it decided to send a team of engineers down to Shenzhen to investigate XYZone’s unit. The team confirmed that his unit didn’t have the adhesive but added that it was a one-off case. After finding out that his unit had an issue, Meizu decided to compensate him with two new units of the same model.

Meizu further released a new video on Weibo showing the assembly process of the Snapdragon 855 processor in the Meizu 16S. In the video (here), there is a part where we get to see the adhesive being applied around the phone’s processor. Well, it’s good to see that Meizu is taking consumer feedback seriously. The video is a pretty nice way to instill confidence among its fans in China.

It remains to be seen whether this was really a one-off incident. If not, we should see a lot more case in the coming days. Meanwhile, the same user reported that his Xiaomi Mi 9 also didn’t have this adhesive. Xiaomi is yet to comment on this matter.

OPPO K3 specs leak, will have pop-up selfie camera and Snapdragon 710 SoC

Last year, OPPO launched the K series, a new line of mid-range smartphones. The OPPO K1 is the first of the series, and seven months later, a successor is already on the way. The full specs of the phone which will launch has the OPPO K3 have been leaked.

OPPO K1’s successor, the OPPO K3 will come with a pop-up selfie camera

The OPPO K3 will come with a slightly smaller display than its predecessor. It is a 6.3-inch screen, and like the K1, it is an AMOLED panel with a new generation in-display fingerprint scanner. It will ditch the notch and embrace a full-screen design with a pop-up selfie camera.

OPPO is replacing the Snapdragon 660 processor with the more powerful Snapdragon 710. RAM has also been increased to 6GB RAM on the base model and 8GB RAM on the high-end version. Storage on both is 128GB but there is no mention of a MicroSD card slot.

The OPPO K3 will have a 16MP rising front-facing camera, and on the back, it will have 16MP + 2MP dual camera sensors. There is a 3700mAh battery with support for VOOC 3.0 fast charging.

Zenfone 6 teaser throws shade at OnePlus: has triple card slot, audio jack, and more

ASUS just released a new teaser poster for the Zenfone 6 and while it doesn’t explicitly say it, the Taiwanese phone company is throwing shades at OnePlus. The poster reveals some of the features of the phone and we are particularly blown away by one in particular.

ASUS Zenfone 6 featured

The teaser which was posted on Twitter has a caption that reads “Keep the essentials”, and it sure does keep the essentials. It also confirms the launch date which is May 16. The event will hold in Valencia and will begin at 20:00 CEST.

Moving on to the image itself, ASUS confirms the phone will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 processor. This is the same chipset in the Galaxy S10 series, the Mi 9, and the upcoming OnePlus 7 series. It will also power a lot more flagship phones this year.

The Zenfone 6 is keeping the essentials, so it is no surprise it has an audio jack. This is a feature missing on a lot of phones now including the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro. It also has a notification LED which OnePlus removed from the OnePlus 6T and will likely not be on the OnePlus 7 too. Another feature the phone will have is a new hardware button called the Smart Key. We are in the dark regarding what this new button does but can’t wait to find out.

What seems to be the biggest feature the Zenfone 6 has is a triple card slot! Yes, the phone has a triple card slot, which isn’t actually unheard of in a phone but is practically the first flagship device to have one. The triple card slot will allow you to use 2 SIM cards and a MicroSD card slot at the same time.

This is a big deal for a flagship phone. In a world where there are phones with just a single SIM slot and no option for storage expansion (iPhones and Pixels), others that will ask you to choose between a second SIM slot or a MicroSD card slot (Galaxy S10), and some that only have dual SIM slots (Mi 9, OnePlus 7/Pro), the Zenfone 6 with its triple card slot is a ray of sunshine. OnePlus phones have never had a MicroSD, save for the OnePlus X.

Samsung launches 64 MP ISOCELL Bright GW1 and 48 MP GM2 image sensors for smartphones

Samsung Electronics has today launched two new 0.8-micrometer (μm) pixel image sensors — 64-megapixel Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 and 48-megapixel ISOCELL Bright GM2.

The new ISOCELL Bright GW1 is a 64 MP sensor that offers the highest resolution so far for a smartphone camera sensor. On the other hand, the new ISOCELL Bright GM2 48 MP sensor is the successor of last year’s ISOCELL Bright GM1 48 MP sensor.

Both sensors come with the company’s proprietary ISOCELL Plus technology that reduces light leakage, as well as Tetracell technology which uses four pixels like one to allow for better photos in dark environments.

Samsung ISOCELL GW1 and GM2

The GW1 sensor comes with pixel-merging Tetracell technology and remosaic algorithm that offers 16 MP images in low-light environments where four pixels are merged to work as one to increase light sensitivity.

It also supports real-time high dynamic range (HDR) of up to 100-decibels (dB) that provides richer hues. The sensor is equipped with a Dual Conversion Gain (DCG) that converts the received light into an electric signal. This allows the sensor to optimize its full well capacity (FWC), utilizing the collected light more efficiently especially in bright environments.

The Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 and GM2 are currently sampling to OEMs and are expected to enter mass production in the second half of this year. Can we see this in Galaxy Note10? We should know in the coming months.

The GW1 also supports 480fps Full HD slow motion filming and will have High Dynamic Range. Both the sensors — GW1 and GM2 come with support for Super PD which is a high-performance phase detection auto-focus technology.

Currently, Samsung is sampling these sensors to OMEs and are expected to enter mass production in the second half of this year. We are expecting this new offering to power the upcoming Galaxy Note 10 flagship lineup.

Samsung updates Galaxy On7 Prime to Android Pie
