Alleged Redmi SD855 phone with pop-up selfie camera and 3.5mm audio jack officially teased again

In February, Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing had confirmed that the company will be launching a Snapdragon 855 mobile platform driven flagship phone. It is expected to be one of the cheapest phones powered by the Snapdragon 855. Some rumors have even claimed that the phone may debut as Poco F2 outside of China. Last month, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun was spotted with the alleged Redmi SD855 smartphone. Today, Xiaomi’s Product Director, Wang Teng Thomas has an image which shows the same phone with Xiaomi co-founder and President, Lin Bin.

Redmi flagship phone

The new Weibo post that had shown the mysterious and unreleased Redmi phone placed on the table has been deleted. The image had revealed that the phone is equipped with a 3.5mm audio jack on its top which also seems to be housing a module with pop-up selfie camera. Hence, the smartphone could be equipped with a notch-less display. Earlier today, Lu Weibing had confirmed that the company’s flagship will indeed arrive with a 3.5mm audio jack.

The Chinese firm has been teasing the phone, but the identity of the phone is still under the wraps. Even the rumor mill is believing that it could be the Redmi’s Snapdragon 855 powered phone, it could also be some other Xiaomi/Redmi smartphone. As mentioned above, the Redmi SD855 phone is expected to deliver topnotch performance at affordable price.

Redmi flagship phone

Some rumors are claiming that the phone may go official in the coming month. There is no information available on the specifications of the smartphone. The new image that has surfaced today does not match with the purported Redmi phone with triple rear cameras, rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and punch-hole display that was recently seen in a leaked video. This indicates that these two devices are different smartphones.

Redmi has couple of other phones waiting in pipeline to get official. The Redmi S3 selfie centric phone is expected to go official in May in China. The same smartphone may release in some other markets including India as Redmi Y3. The company is also expected to announce other Redmi 7 series phones such as Redmi 7 Pro and Redmi 7A.

Lenovo Z6 Pro is codenamed “Monkey King”, aims to take on Xiaomi Mi 9

Lenovo has already confirmed that the company’s upcoming flagship smartphone — Lenovo Z6 Pro is going to make its official debut on 23rd April in China. Now, ahead of the phone’s launch, more information related to the device is surfacing online.

The company’s head for the China region took to Chinese microblogging platform Weibo to announce that the one month long internal testing of the Z6 Pro has been successfully completed and the phone is ready to get launched on 23rd April.

He also revealed that the phone’s internal name is “Money King” and from the text he posted on Weibo, it seems that the company is planning to place the Lenovo Z6 Pro in such as way that it directly competes against Xiaomi’s flagship smartphone Mi 9.

Lenovo Z6 Pro Codename

It has already been confirmed that the Lenovo Z6 Pro will come powered by Qualcomm’s latest and greatest Snapdragon 855 octa-core processor and will also come with support for 5G connectivity — a first from the company.

Earlier, the company had hinted that the phone’s camera will be able to capture 100-megapixel shots. There is a possibility that the company could be relying on some sort of software trick for shooting 100-megapixel images through the smartphone.

This could be HyperVision camera feature that the company has been teasing since February. Through another teaser, the Chinese firm also confirmed that the Z6 Pro supports Hyper Video that can be transferred at higher rates than existing videos. Till now, it is yet to reveal the details of the HyperVision Camera and Hyper Video features.

Huawei CEO says the company is open to selling 5G chips to Apple

We recently reported that the China-based Huawei, which is among the very few smartphone manufacturers who make their own chipsets, could be open to supply 5G chips to Apple.

For those who are unaware, Huawei develops its own processors under the Kirin brand for the Huawei and Honor branded smartphones. But, its chipsets are not sold to other smartphone makers and are limited to Huawei and Honor smartphones only.

In a recent interview with CNBC, Huawei CEO confirmed that the company is open to selling its 5G chips to Apple. In the same video, he can be seen praising Apple and the western management style, which helped the company grow further.

huawei patents

Supplying chips to its biggest rival Apple is a surprising move from Huawei as the company’s executive had previously said that the Huawei chipsets are for its own internal products such as phones and IoT devices.

Huawei’s Balong 5000 modem chip supports both mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G networks. It is also compatible with 4G LTE, 3G, and 2G networks. The Balong 5000 5G modem chip will debut on Huawei’s first phone to support the next generation of wireless connectivity — Mate X, which also happens to be the company’s first foldable smartphone.

Apple is currently in a tight spot with its current chipset supplier — Intel which supplies wireless modems for iPhones and iPads. It’s 5G-ready XMM 8160 modems would be available for its customers in the second half of 2019. But a report claims that Apple has “lost confidence” in Intel after the world’s largest chipset manufacturer failed to meet certain development deadlines.

The development comes at a time when China-based tech giant Huawei is aiming to dethrone Apple and Samsung to grab the top spot in the global smartphones market share. However, Huawei comes to Apple’s side when Qualcomm and Samsung both have refused to provide their 5G modems to Apple. While Qualcomm’s denial is understandable given their ongoing legal battle, Samsung refused to supply by citing lack of supply for its Exynos 5100 chips.

The Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus is leading the category with 96 points, followed by Google Pixel 3 and Samsung Galaxy Note 9, both of which scored 92 points. The Huawei P30 Pro is fourth in the front-facing camera but is leading the list for the rear camera.

As for the specifications, the Huawei P30 Pro features a 6.47-inch Full HD+ curved OLED display. The phone doesn’t have an earpiece, instead, it uses Acoustic Display Technology which emits sounds through the display using magnetic levitation.

Redmi SD855 flagship phone will have 3.5mm audio jack

Last week, an alleged Redmi flagship phone powered by Snapdragon 855 chipset was spotted in a leaked video. The video showcased the phone from all angles. However, since it was not very clear, the video could not confirm the presence of a 3.5mm audio jack. Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing has confirmed to Redmi fans through a recent Weibo post that the Redmi SD855 flagship phone will be equipped with a 3.5mm audio jack.

Redmi flagship 3.5mm audio jack

On Weibo, a Redmi fan had asked Lu Weibing whether the upcoming Redmi phone fueled by Snapdragon 855 mobile platform will retain a headphone jack. The Redmi executive did not shy away from revealing the presence of the feature. He did not share any other information on the smartphone.

The alleged Redmi flagship phone was recently spotted in the same frame with Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun. While the display design of the smartphone wasn’t clearly visible, it revealed the presence of a big hole on its top/bottom edge. It indicated that the phone will be arriving with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Also, the leaked video that had surfaced recently revealed that the phone will come equipped with a triple camera setup and a fingerprint scanner on its rear. The front view of the phone suggested that it will deliver an impressive screen-to-body ratio since it was seen sporting a punch-hole screen with slim bezels around it. The display design was slightly unique since the hole was positioned on the top-center and not on the top-left or top-right of the screen.

Redmi is not really interested in sharing the details of its flagship phone at present. The reason behind it is that the company wants to focus on the sales of the already released smartphones such as Redmi Note 7, Redmi Note 7 Pro and Redmi 7. The Chinese manufacturer is also getting ready to launch a selfie-focused smartphone with 32-megapixel selfie camera.

The 32-megapixel selfie camera phone from Redmi will be releasing in India as Redmi Y3. The same is likely to hit the Chinese markets with Redmi S3 moniker. The smartphone will be featuring 32-megapixel Samsung ISOCELL Bright S5KGD1 sensor. The phone is likely to get unveiled in the coming month.

Realme CEO shares Realme 3 Pro nighttime camera sample

Ahead of the Realme 3 Pro release which is scheduled for April 22, the company’s CEO has shared a nighttime camera sample of the device. This comes nearly a week after he shared daytime camera samples.

The picture which is of the Shenzhen Concert Hall in China is actually quite impressive. The level of detail is high and color reproduction is superb.

Realme 3 Pro night shot camera sample

Realme has kept a tight lip about the phone’s camera specs or even its specs in general. What we know so far about the phone have been from leaks and benchmark results.

The Realme 3 Pro is said to feature the same main camera as the OnePlus 6T, the Sony IMX519. There should be at least two cameras on the back of the device. The phone will also come with a Snapdragon 710 processor, 6GB of RAM and run Android Pie.

Samsung rolls out urgent fingerprint scanner update to Galaxy S10 and S10+

Samsung’s Galaxy S10, S10+, and S10+ 5G are the first Samsung phones to launch with Fingerprint on Display (FoD) technology. The Galaxy A80 and Galaxy A70 have also joined the list of Samsung phones with in-display fingerprint scanners but they use an optical scanner and not ultrasonic like the S10.

The Galaxy S10’s fingerprint scanner is touted as one of the most secure on-screen sensors, however, it isn’t foolproof. Someone was able to get it to open by using a 3D printed fingerprint. Samsung is rolling out an update to the S10 and S10+ that says it is a biometrics security patch.

Galaxy S10+ Ultrasonic Fingerprint Scanner

Although Samsung didn’t specifically say, we believe the update fixes the vulnerability with the scanner. We guess the scanner might scan for changes in blood pressure between the vessels of your finger before unlocking or something similar. That can’t be simulated by a 3D printed finger, so we guess your phone should be more secure now.

The folks at GSMArena said the fingerprint scanner also works better now. It is faster and more reliable but still not as fast as a capacitive fingerprint scanner on the back or side of a lot of phones.

Vivo V1832A passes TENAA, has a 32MP selfie cam

Vivo has a new phone with a 32MP selfie cam on the way. The phone which has model numbers V1832A/V1832T was certified last week. The Vivo V1832A shares a bunch of its specs with the Vivo V15 Pro and might even be its Chinese version.

Vivo V15 Pro
The Vivo V1832A/V1832T might be the Chinese version of the V15 Pro pictured above.

It has a 6.39-inch AMOLED display with a fingerprint scanner buried under it and is powered by a 2.0GHz octa-core processor. If this is the Chinese version of the V15 Pro, then the SoC is the Snapdragon 675. There is 6GB/8GB of RAM but unlike the V15 Pro which comes with only 128GB of storage, this has a 256GB version too.

There are triple rear cameras – a 12MP primary camera, an 8MP secondary sensor, and a 5MP depth sensor. The selfie camera is a 32MP sensor.

The Vivo V1832A will run Android 9 Pie out of the box. Its battery capacity is 3620mAh and it supports fast charging. The phone will be available in Gold. Its dimensions are given as 157.5 x 74.71 x 8.21 mm and it will weigh 185 grams. Unfortunately, there are no images for the listings.

Leaked poster reveals OnePlus 7 Pro tag line, teases camera

A few days ago specs and images of a phone believed to be the OnePlus 7 Pro were leaked on the web. The device is said to be one of three scheduled to be released by OnePlus in a few months with the other two being the OnePlus 7 and the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G.

A new leak has surfaced in the form of a poster which confirms there is indeed a phone called the OnePlus 7 Pro. The image also reveals the tag line for the phone and teases the camera too.

OnePlus 7 Pro tag line

The tag line for the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T is “The Speed You Need” and “Unlock The Speed” respectively. The OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition even has its own tag line – “Salute to Speed”. For the OnePlus 7 Pro, OnePlus has adopted the tag line “Go Beyond Speed”.

OnePlus phones are really fast compared to the competition. Some reviewers have even said they are faster than Google’s own Pixel smartphones which run pure Android. OnePlus itself never fails to emphasize how fast its phones are. From adverts comparing it against the competition to controversial street speed challenges.

There is also a text on the poster that teases the phone’s camera. Although it doesn’t reveal any important detail but it is one of the highlighted features of the device. The phone is expected to come with a 48MP + 16MP + 8MP triple rear camera setup.

Samsung Galaxy A20e vs Honor 8A Pro vs Nokia 4.2: Specs Comparison

After the evolution of mobile chipsets during the last years, entry-level and midrange devices became an important reality even for advanced users with a low budget. But it is still not easy for everyone to choose the perfect device for his needs, especially when it comes to speed and camera quality. That is why we often compare entry-level and midrange handsets in order to clear our readers’ ideas about them. The Protagonists of today’s comparison are three new smartphones we never compared before: the Samsung Galaxy A20e, Huawei’s Honor 8A Pro and HMD Global‘s Nokia 4.2. You can find all of them for a very modest price, and here we will try to let you understand which one you should opt for.

Design

The design is one of the weakest points of entry-level handsets, but it is not exactly the case for these three devices. They are definitely built with cheap materials, but they look very nice with their optimized bezels and their small notches. Of all these handsets, I personally prefer the Samsung Galaxy A20e not only for its high screen-to-body ratio but also because it is the most compact one. But if you do not like small displays, then you may prefer the Honor 8A Pro with its very narrow bezels and its clean plastic back that looks like glass.

Display

When it comes to display size, Samsung Galaxy A20e and Nokia 4.2 are above-average devices with a diagonal of just 5.8 and 5.71 inches, respectively. So if you prefer phablets, you should definitely go for the Honor 8A Pro. Judging from the specs on the paper, Honor 8A Pro does not seem to offer the best colors and detail, but Samsung Galaxy A20e and Nokia 4.2 are just slightly superior and users should not notice a difference in daily use. So our suggestion is choosing just depending on the size of the display.

Specs & Software

Here you can find the most important differences: the Honor 8A Pro has a much better chipset in terms of speed and power. It comes with a midrange-class Helio P35 and, while not everyone trusts MediaTek nowadays, it is undoubtedly the most powerful chipset with its 12 nm production process and a max clock frequency of 2.3 GHz. The Honor 8A Pro is also the only device to come with 64 GB of internal storage, while Samsung Galaxy A20e stop at 32 GB. And it is possible to furtherly expand the internal storage thanks to a micro SD dedicated slot up to 512 GB.

Camera

If I had to choose the best camera, I would go for the Samsung Galaxy A20e without thinking twice. It is equipped with a dual camera module with a bright aperture and an ultrawide secondary sensor which is very rare to find on entry-level and budget devices. So it deserves the victory only for that. Despite having just a single camera on its back, Honor 8A Pro takes the second place thanks to its bright aperture and decent photos in most of the light conditions. Nokia 4.2 is a stock Android One device, while Samsung Galaxy A20e and Honor 8A Pro have a customized user interface which is not the max on an entry-level phone.

Battery

The opinions we are going to express on these phones battery life is just based on the specs on the paper as we did not test each of them thoroughly. As they come with more or less the same battery capacity (3000 mAh), there should not be important differences in battery life. But Nokia 4.2 may be able to last a bit more due to its smaller display, the very efficient Snapdragon 439 chipset and Android One.

Price

Samsung Galaxy A20e will hit the market next month with a price tag of €189/$213, Honor 8A Pro costs about €200/$225 and Nokia 4.2 costs €150/$170. Overall, despite its more affordable price, Nokia 4.2 looks like a more interesting device thanks to Android One, its optimization and its constant updates. But if you want the best performance and also a good camera, Honor 8A Pro is a more suitable device for you.

Leaked Honor 8S renders show off dual-textured back

The Honor 8S is an upcoming entry-level/mid-range phone. Its specs along with some official renders just leaked. While there isn’t anything special about its specs, the design, specifically the rear is pretty unique.

A lot of the phones these days look alike and it seems it is pretty difficult to stand out. However, once in a while, we see a phone that stands out from the rest. The Honor 8S is one of such devices.

[envira-gallery id=”246865″]

While most entry-level/mid-range phones settle for a smooth slab of polycarbonate or metal with different sort of finishes to make them look good, the Honor 8S has a polycarbonate back with a dual-textured design.

The back is divided into two unequal halves. The part where the camera is down to the bottom has a smooth finish while the remaining half has a textured design that should make for a firmer grip. The blue is particularly my favorite. There is also black and gold variants. We wish Honor made a red one too and maybe even made the back cover replaceable, so you could easily switch between colors.

With respect to specs, the Honor 8S has a 5.71-inch IPS display with a 1520 x 720 resolution. There is a Dewdrop notch at the top for the selfie camera and the chin is a bit thick.

The phone is powered by the Helio A22 processor. There is 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage which can be expanded via a MicroSD card slot. The rear camera is a 13MP sensor with an LED flash and the selfie camera is a 5MP sensor. There is no fingerprint scanner.

The Honor 8S packs a 3020mAh battery which charges via a MicroUSB port. There is an audio jack at the top too. It will run EMUI 9.0 based on Android Pie out of the box.

We Look at Unique and Weird Smartphone Patent Designs Filed recently

Smartphone manufacturers are often coming up with very innovative devices in the last couple of years, especially when it comes to the design. Smartphones designs have evolved pretty quickly: we saw glass and ceramic bodies, borderless displays, pop-up cameras and so much more.

But behind these unique and interesting designs, there are hundreds of patents and trials and errors. Of course not every patented design comes into existence, but they give us a glimpse of the future. Some of them are bound to make it to the market. So, what looks weird and unique right now, may become the norm in the next few years. Some may even become best sellers!

So today, we look at the 5 most interesting patents filed in the past few months, which could see the light of the day.

NOTE: You will notice that most of the patents mentioned here come via Letsgodigital. They are doing a great job at summarizing new patent filings and creating renders based on the available information. So, special thanks to them for making our lives easier.

1LG foldable phone with a transparent screen

What may seem impossible right now, sure could be a reality in a few years. LG has patented a foldable phone with a transparent screen. The astonishing patent filed at USPTO (US Patent and Trademark Office) leaves no space to doubts: in a sketch from Letsgodigital, we can clearly see two hands behind a big foldable smartphone that looks like a tablet while unfolded, similarly to the Huawei Mate X. The display is not completely transparent but it includes an opaque section which supposedly contains all the hardware components. The phone also comes with very narrow bezels around the display which makes it look even more gorgeous. Someone is already thinking that such a device might have important implications in the AR sector… What do you think about this patent?

2Samsung smartphones linked magnetically

Smartphones are becoming bigger every year. And smartphones manufacturers are constantly studying new solutions to provide big displays in compact bodies. After borderless displays and foldable phones, the next innovation might be smartphones linked magnetically. Or at least that is what Samsung has thought about, considering its recent patent. The new smartphone design varies depending on how two phones get linked, thanks to magnetical connectors placed on the borders. The new design allows linking two phones in several different ways. A cylindrical magnet on the side allows connecting them side by side, or you can even connect them on their backsides. The user can even opt for different formats after sticking the phones side by side and forming a unique big display, as you can see from the above patents image.

3LG notebook-like foldable phone

A year ago, LG patented a phone with a form factor similar to the Samsung Galaxy Fold. The patent was published by WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization), and it shows a phone with two displays. The external display that you can see when the phone is folded contains a curved part on the edges which can show time, date and notifications. When the phone is partially unfolded, the internal display folds inwards like the Galaxy Fold making it notebook-like. At the same time, the external display can be used on both sides in order to let two users watch videos independently. Indeed, the phone even features two headphone jacks which can be used for the two parts of the external display. And that is not all, as the LG patents even include two batteries on the same phone. Everything seems to be dual on this device, evidently focused on multimedia.

4Samsung’s Weird Monitor with a 3D display

Last but not least, Samsung patented a very weird 3D display. Unlike the other patents above, it is not a smartphone design, but it is a device that can be connected to a smartphone. We do not know exactly what it is, but it seems either a monitor or television which will be able to reproduce 3D content. The patent filed at USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) mentions a “three-dimensional display device and user interfacing method therefore”. By using its integrated camera, the new device can even create 3D content such as 3D objects and a 3D user interface. The integrated detection sensor can detect all the contacts with the object in a 3D space, so it may be possible to interact with the monitor with a touch screen or a touch pen. Even though the pictures are very detailed, they are not enough to get a good idea of what the 3D display will look like. Indeed, while the renders show a flat view, the 3D display may arrive with a cubic shape.

5Oppo smartphone with pop-up and side slider displays

A patent which deserves a mention is definitely the one filed by the Chinese manufacturer Oppo and spotted a few weeks ago. It consists of phones with displays popping up from both the upper and the left side. The first device shows two displays: a classic one on the front and a smaller pop-up display on top of the phone. The second phone is equipped with a side slider display coming out from the left side which seems to have the same dimensions as the main screen. The secondary display on each of these phones may be useful in several scenarios, such as watching videos with the primary display and showing remote controls on the secondary one or making it tablet-sized with both the displays opened or checking notification while playing games, and much more.

Samsung SM-A3050 and SM-A3058 pass TENAA, pack big batteries and triple rear cameras

Two new Samsung phones have been certified by China’s TENAA. The phones which have model numbers SM-A3050 and SM-A3058.

Looking at the model number of the two phones, you won’t be wrong to say these network variants of the Galaxy A30. However, their specs are far from similar to that of the Galaxy A30 which already launched. In fact, they are actually very similar to the specs of the Galaxy M30 (SM-M305F).

The Samsung SM-A3050 (and SM-A3085) has a 6.4-inch AMOLED display like the M30 but has a lower 1560 x 720 HD+ resolution. The TENAA listing says it will come with a 1.8GHz or 1.6GHz octa-core processor paired with 4GB, 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of expandable storage.

The phone has the same camera setup as the M30. There is a 13MP + 5MP + 5MP triple camera combo on the rear of the device and a 16MP sensor in front for selfies.

The Samsung SM-A3050 runs Android 9 Pie, has a fingerprint scanner, and packs a 4900mAh battery with support for fast charging. It will come in black, gold, and blue. Its dimensions are given as 75.1 x 159 x 8.4 mm and its weight is 174 grams.

There are no images yet. However, that seems to be the least worry. For a phone with up to 8GB of RAM, having an HD+ display is pretty unusual. We have a feeling this listing is mixed up and hope TENAA corrects it soon.
