OnePlus 6T is the first OnePlus phone to come preinstalled with Android 9 Pie OS. The Chinese manufacturer has released OxygenOS 9.0 based Pie update for the OnePlus 6 smartphone around two months ago. The next OnePlus phones that are waiting in queue are OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T. The Android Pie update could be arriving soon to OnePlus 5 and 5T phones soon since the Chinese manufacturer has released open beta version of the latest Android version for these phones in China.
OnePlus phones that are sold outside of China come with Oxygen OS whereas its handsets released in China feature Hydrogen OS. The Chinese manufacturer has released Hydrogen OS 9.0 based Android 9 Pie open beta version for OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T smartphones. The new update brings full screen touch gestures for the OnePlus 5T. This feature is not available on the OnePlus 5 since it is equipped with physical buttons below the display.
The management of apps that run in the background have been reworked to deliver smoother experience. Users can select a default SIM for a particular contact or group.
In the previous month, it was reported that the Android 9 Pie update for the OnePlus 5, OnePlus 5T, OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T smartphones were delayed. The arrival of the Hydrogen OS based Android 9 has arrived for OnePlus 5 series in China, it is likely that the Oxygen OS Android 9 Pie beta would be soon available for these phones. This could mean that the OnePlus 5 and 5T users may be treated with stable version of the latest software before the end of the year. As far as OnePlus 3 and 3T phones are concerned, both phones may get stable edition of the Android 9 Pie OS in the coming year.
Chinese phone manufacturer UMIDIGI is set to stun the industry with yet another phone model with an outstanding specs lineup. The device dubbed UMIDIGI S3 Pro has as its standout feature Sony’s most advanced camera sensor – the IMX586 with a super 48MP shutter.
Sony first announced the IMX586 stacked CMOS image sensor for smartphone cameras in July this year. The new sensor features 48 effective megapixels, the industry’s highest pixel count. The new product also achieved a world-first ultra-compact pixel size of 0.8 μm, making it possible to pack 48 effective megapixels onto a 1/2-type (8.0 mm diagonal) unit, thereby supporting enhanced imaging on smartphone cameras. Interestingly, the UMIDIGI S3 Pro may likely be the first device to utilise the new sensor and not a Huawei or Sony flagship. It is presently the largest you can find on a smartphone. It beats the Huawei P20 Pro 40MP sensor as well as the 41MP sensor on the good old Lumia 1020. The increased resolution should help UMIDIGI S3 Pro make for better daytime snaps as well as deliver superb shooting performance at night.
Yet another spectacular feature is the massive 5150mAh battery that would be onboard the device. This is way bigger than the battery we find onboard most flagships around. The battery will ensure the phone is capable of an extended usage period. Other details of the device are still sketchy but no doubt the device holds lots of promises in various aspects. Hopefully, we’ll find out more details in the coming days.
Unihertz Atom is definitely one of the most innovative phones released in 2018 from an underground smartphone manufacturer. We took inspiration from one of the most famous Clint Eastwood’s movies by calling it “million dollar rugged phone” because, thanks to its unique features, the Shanghai-based company managed to collect more than $1 million in crowdfunding on the Kickstarter campaign well before its official launch. Unihertz Atom is the world’s smallest 4G rugged phone and this is our review with its pros and cons.
[envira-gallery id=”222291″]
Design and build quality
Just like every rugged phone out there, Unihertz Atom does not do well in the looks department but its size and its build quality would surprise everyone. It measures only 97 x 45 x 18 mm, it weighs just 108 grams (but it will feel a bit heavy compared to its size) and, as said above, it is the smallest 4G rugged phone ever launched. This is a very important feature as people who look for a rugged phone to bring in the toughest environments usually desire a small-sized and not bulky handset.
[envira-gallery id=”222294″]
It fits in every pocket and you can easily use it with just one hand thanks to its dimensions. Besides being incredibly small, this phone is very solid and resistant, and not only because of its very small size. It has a very sturdy build with a solid and rubberized black body and red highlights here and there. It is also IP68 certified, so you can forget worrying about dust and water. Further, it is protected against shock, vibrations and extreme temperatures. On the front side, it features a front camera, a notification LED and two capacitive keys to go back and access the multitasking menu, as well as a third one which doubles as a fingerprint reader.
[envira-gallery id=”222301″]
The fingerprint reader does take a few seconds to react, but we found it to be accurate. On the right side, there is the power key, a push-to-talk button which opens the preinstalled app Zello, and a USB-C port which supports the OTG technology to connect external peripherals. The left side houses volume keys and a dual SIM tray (both the slots support nano-SIM cards and are 4G-enabled). The 3.5 mm audio jack (yay) is placed on the upper part of the phone, while the mono speaker is placed on the back (boo).
[envira-gallery id=”222302″]
Display
As Unihertz Atom is the smallest rugged phone, it also has the smallest display. It has a diagonal of 2.45 inches, a resolution of 240 x 432 pixels and it is protected by Gorilla Glass (there is also a free screen protector in the box in case you do not trust Corning’s protection). The display is definitely the only real weak point of this device.
[envira-gallery id=”222303″]
The detail is not so high, even though it is not so noticeable given the size, and viewing angles are not very wide. On the other hand, its brightness is satisfying. If you have big fingers or a poor eyesight you will find it difficult to use, but if you do not have these problems, thanks to the good brightness and a great touchscreen, you should not have issues (except for the QWERTY keyboard, you will have to get used to it or just set the old school 3×4 keyboard in the settings).
Hardware & performance
Under the hood, the Unihertz Atom has a midrange hardware side which is all but disappointing. It provides really nice performance in every scenario and given that with that display size you will surely not push multitasking to the extreme, the overall performance is smooth. It is equipped with an octa-core MediaTek Helio P20 which does its job greatly, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage not expandable. In our tests, it ran Asphalt 9 with a good and stable frame rate too!
Software
On the software side, Unihertz Atom has a stock version of Android 8.1 Oreo with no customizations, Google services included, and just a few preinstalled apps which could be useful in extreme environments in which rugged phones are usually popular. The system is smooth and apps open fastly. Right after turning it on, we got a notification with a software update containing fixes and improvements.
Camera
[envira-gallery id=”222304″]
If there is ample lighting, the Unihertz Atom is able to click well-detailed outdoor photos which can surprise you for both detail and color reproduction (colors are just slightly washed out under direct sunlight, but HDR can adjust things). But forget shooting good photos in low-light conditions. It has a more than sufficient rear camera with a 16 MP resolution, but nothing very special. But it is enough for a small rugged phone sold at a reasonable price. The front camera is an average 8 MP sensor.
Battery
Despite its small 2000 mAh unit, we expected a bit more from the battery because of a small display with a below-average resolution which we expected to have a low energy consumption. But it’s not exactly the case here. Rugged phones are expected to have large batteries, but this ones an exception. Because of its size and hence the limited battery capacity on board, you cannot achieve a lot more than 4h of screen time under normal and constant use.
Price
Unihertz Atom is currently up for pre-orders on the official store which can be accessed at Unihertz.com. You can currently grab a unit for just $249.99 ($10 of discount for a limited time) which is definitely a great price for a unique device like this. The Unihertz Atom will start shipping in December. Overall, this device turns out to be a nice deal.
At an affordable price, you can grab a unit of a very sturdy and versatile device with very satisfying performance, water-resistance, a decent camera, and even NFC support. The small display and battery are the only compromises which should worry you if you do not like a device with a poor viewing experience going out of charge under 1.5 days.
OPPO’s sub-brand Realme is already selling Realme 1, Realme 2, Realme 2 Pro and Realme C1 smartphones in India. Citing information received from third-party sources, 91 Mobiles claims that the company may soon introduce Realme U-series that will include selfie-centric phones. The first Realme U phone is speculated to be fueled by MediaTek Helio P70 chipset.
In the previous month, MediaTek had announced the Helio P70 chipset. The new SoC is a faster version of the Helio P60 SoC. The 12nm chipset includes quad-cores of Cortex A73 that work at 2.1 GHz and four cores of Cortex A53 that clocks at 2.0 GHz. The Mali-G72 GPU of the Helio P70 clocks at 900 MHz. In terms of CPU, GPU and APU layout, the Helio P70 chipset resembles the Helio P60 SoC. However, the P70 offers better clocking speeds that promises 13-pecent better performance over P60.
At the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2018 tech expo that was held in the same month, Realme CEO Madhav Sheth confirmed that the next Realme phone will be fueled by the Helio P70 SoC.
Realme is OPPO’s weapon to rival with Xiaomi’s Redmi phones. The Redmi Y2 is a selfie-centric phone that comes with an LED flash enabled 16-megapixel front-facing camera.
There is a possibility that the mysterious Realme U smartphone may arrive with a dedicated LED flash for the selfie camera. It is speculated that the upcoming Realme U phone will be competing with the likes of Redmi Y2 and it could be priced around Rs. 15,000 in India.
In related news, an unidentified Realme phonev with model number RMX1833 has been spotted on Geekbench. The listing on the benchmarking site reveals that the mysterious RMX1833 features Helio P60 chipset, 4 GB of RAM and Android 8.1 Oreo OS. It is being speculated that it could be the Realme 3 smartphone. The company is aiming to launch two to three smartphones in India by March 2019. The Realme 3 may get unveiled next year. One of the upcoming Realme phones is also expected to carry support for 20W VOOC fast charging technology.
According to the serial leaker, the ZenFone Max Pro (M2) which has the model number ZB631KL will have a 6-inch full HD+ screen, 4GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of storage. It will be powered by the Snapdragon 660 processor which is still a worthy upgrade over the Snapdragon 636 which powers the ZenFone Max Pro (M1).
With respect to cameras, the phone will have three sensors on its back. Roland Quandt also mentions a 13MP sensor which may be the front-facing camera.
ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M2 ZB631KL = 6in FHD+, 13MP, 4GB RAM, 64/128GB. Snapdragon 660 (SDM660), Triple Cam ASUS ZenFone Max M2 ZB633KL = 6in FHD+, 13MP, 4GB RAM, 32/64GB. Snapdragon 636 (MSM8953), Dual Cam ZB632KL (non-Pro), ZB634KL (Pro) are likely India specific variants
Next comes the ZenFone Max M2 with model number ZB633KL. It will also sport a 6” FHD+ display but be powered by a Snapdragon 636 processor with 4GB of RAM and 32GB/64GB of built-in storage. The ZenFone Max M2 will have a 13MP (front-facing) camera and dual cameras on its back.
HMD Global has released no less than 6 smartphones this year. The manufacturer decided to take a break today and announced something else – the Nokia 106 feature phone. It also announced two new color variants for the Nokia 230.
The Nokia 106 has a candy bar design with a T9 physical keyboard. The phone sports a 1.8-inch color display and a polycarbonate body. Nokia says it has inherent coloring which means the color runs through the material, hence scratches should be less visible.
The phone is powered by an MTK 6261D processor paired with 4MB of RAM and 4MB of storage. It has a removable 800mAh battery that can last up to 21 days on standby and provide up to 15.7 hours of talk time. It has a MicroUSB port for charging and has dual-SIM support.
The Nokia 106 can store up to 2000 contacts and 500 messages. Just like other Nokia Classic phones, the Nokia 106 comes bundled with Snake Xenzia as well as a couple of try-and-buy games.
Last month, Samsung launched its premium mid-range phone — Galaxy A9 (2018) — as the world’s first smartphone to feature four rear cameras. Recently, we reported that the phone could soon be launched in India and now the company has sent out media invites to launch the phone in India on 20th November.
The invite from the company reads “4X Fun” in a bold font to highlight the quad camera setup on the back. Further, Flipkart has created a landing page for the phone, which indicates that the Galaxy A9 (2018) will be exclusively available on its platform at launch.
Recently, Samsung India’s official website’s source code revealed that the Galaxy A9 (2018) could be priced at Rs. 39,000 which roughly converts to $534. The pricing is for the 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage model. To compare, it was unveiled with a European pricing of €599 (approximately $682).
The phone’s rear camera setup includes a 24-megapixel camera with f/1.7 aperture, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, a 10-megapixel telephoto lens offering 2x optical zoom, and a 5-megapixel depth sensor with f/2.2 aperture.
On the front side, the device comes equipped with a 24-megapixel camera sensor for taking selfies and video calling. There’s also an Intelligent Scene Optimizer feature that relies on AI for enhancing shots in different scenes.
The Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) features a taller 6.3-inch AMOLED display with 2220 x 1080 pixels screen resolution and 18.5:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm mid-range Snapdragon 660 processor. The phone comes in two variants — one featuring 6GB RAM while the other variant packs 8GB RAM, along with 128GB of internal storage.
While the phone supports Face Unlock feature, it also comes with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor for added security. Coming to the software, the handset runs on Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out-of-the-box with Samsung’s Experience UX. The phone is powered by a 3,800mAh battery with support for fast charging.
To know the phone’s pricing and availability details in the Indian market, we’ll have to wait for the company to officially launched the phone in India on 20th November.
Apple iPhones are widely regarded as the best camera phones around. Samsung Galaxy models and Google Pixel phones are also equipped with impressive cameras with stunning output. The cameras of these models can even be better as lens maker Moment has unveiled the first telephoto lens accessory made specifically for those models. The device is dubbed Moment Tele 58mm and it features a six element design meaning it houses the most glass every used on a Moment lens.
The Tele 58mm is designed for phones sporting a dual camera set up at the rear and will be able to use the lens for 4x zoom. The lens can also be used for phones with a single rear camera but it will only give 2x zoom. The interesting aspect is that the 4X zoom is comparable to using a 200mm zoom lens while the 2x zoom comparable to using a 100mm zoom lens. Moment notes that the 58mm length is “ideal for capturing faces in compelling and flattering compositions.” The lens will also give those into sports photography the chance to get closer to the action by using the zoom lens.
The Moment Tele 58mm lens is designed to attach to the phone via a special case which is sold separately by Moment. The Tele 58mm comes with a $79.99 price tag. It is available on Moment’s website and there are several special cases you can choose from. The case for your phone will be selected when you choose your phone model If you order online via the Moment website, you can select the phone you own in order to see which cases are compatible with your device. Keep in mind that if you own an iPhone or Galaxy device with two cameras on back, the Moment Tele 58mm can be used on either lens.
Xiaomi is globetrotting and launching new phones and products in every country it is visiting. Last week it officially entered into the UK market, where it launched the Mi 8 Pro, Redmi 6A, and the Mi Scooter among others. Yesterday, it was the turn of Egypt and it announced the Mi 8 Pro and the Mi 8 Lite.
The Mi 8 Pro shares the same specs as the regular Mi 8 but has an in-display fingerprint scanner instead of a rear-mounted one. The version sold in Egypt has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage and is priced at EGP 9,999.
The Mi 8 Lite is the least powerful model in the Mi 8 series. It is powered by a Snapdragon 660 processor and comes in 4GB RAM + 64GB and 6GB RAM + 128GB variants. The 4GB model is priced at EGP 4,666 while the 6GB RAM version will sell for EGP 5,444.
Talk about the next generation of mobile internet – 5G connectivity – is fast heating up as chip manufacturers and telecom operators are in advanced stages of testing the blazing fast network for millenials of the 20th century. However, there is considerable time before the tech becomes widely available to the public. Samsung has just announced that the second standard for 5G networks will be set in December of 2019. Interestingly, this time it will not be only about mobile phones but will usher in the era of smart cars and smart factories among others.
The second 5G standard or Release 16, as it is called, will be handed over to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), said Sungho Choi, VP at Samsung Electronics’ network business, at the ongoing two day 5G Vertical Summit 2018 in Seoul. The non-standalone standard was already given the go-ahead last year followed by 5G standalone standard this January which completed Release 15.
Release 15 is laid out to support enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), and ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC). Release 16 encompasses much more than that. The standard will help connect smart cars, factories, enterprise networks and ensure public safety. The 5G Automotive Association and 5G Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation (5G ACIA) will work closely with 3GPP to set standards that will result in high-speed data connectivity, boost safety and help improve reliability.
Samsung is hoping to cash in on the 28GHz spectrum and is betting on it to be deployed in 5G SA next year which could give it a lead over Huawei. Both the company’s network business arm and logic chips wing are gunning on 5G that will open new vistas for the Korean giant in these respective sectors in 2019.
Samsung is yet to officially confirm the rollout of Android Pie for its 2017 Galaxy S8 flagship models as well as the Galaxy Note 8 but there are indications the tech giant will push Android Pie upgrade based on the new One UI soon. This much was revealed via the WiFi Alliance certification pages for the three handsets.
The screenshots grabbed from the WiFi Alliance website shows the handsets come with model numbers SM-G9500, SM-G9550 and SM-N9500. The model numbers are those of the Chinese variants of the Galaxy S8, S8+ and the Galaxy Note 8, respectively. The listing was supposed to show just the WiFI certification but alongside comes the discovery that the models that were tested are running Android 9.0 Pie OS.
The Galaxy S8, S8+ and Galaxy Note 8 were launched running Android Nougat and later on Android Oreo update was pushed around Spring last year. Samsung is yet to disclose when Android Pie will hit the models but it may not be this year. An update is likely to happen sometime after January since the Galaxy S9-series and Note 9 will be getting Android Pie in January. As usual, new flagships usually take the front row seats when it comes to firmware updates.
An unnamed Realme smartphone carrying model number RMX1833 has appeared on benchmarking portal Geekbench. The phone is powered by MediaTek’s Helio P60 chipset — the same one that powers the company’s first smartphone — Realme 1.
While the upcoming’s phone name is not yet known, it is believed to the be the Realme 3. This will be the second smartphone from Realme to be powered by MediaTek’s chipset. After the Realme 1, the company shifted from MediaTek to Qualcomm for the processor of its Realme 2, 2 Pro, and C1.
The RMX1833 that appeared on Geekbench is powered by MediaTek Helio P60 octa-core processor along with 4GB RAM and is running Android 8.1 Oreo operating system. As for the performance, the device achieved a single-core score of 1,560 points and a multi-core score of 5,926 points.
It is speculated that the RMX1833 could be the successor of the Realme 2 that was launched a few months ago. However, there’s no evidence available yet to support this claim. The phone could be launched early next year given that Realme India CEO Madhav Sheth had earlier said that the company plans to launch a couple of devices before March 2019.
MediaTek has recently launched the Helio P60 successor — MediaTek Helio P70. It is built using TSMC’s 12nm FinFET technology and comes with multi-core APU operating at up to 525MHz for fast and efficient edge-AI processing. The AI engine delivers a 10 to 30 percent AI processing boost compared to the Helio P60, says the company.
Soon after the Helio P70 became official, Madhav Sheth, CEO of Realme India had confirmed that the company will be the first to launch Helio P70-powered smartphone. He said, “The next Realme will be powered by P70 and it is coming soon.” He has also clarified that while the phone will be a game changer in its price segment, it is not the successor of the Realme 2 or 2 Pro.
When the Honor Magic 2 was announced, it was revealed it would be running EMUI 9.0 out of the box. However, Honor said there will be an update which will bring a new user interface called Magic UI 2.0 to the phone. That update has started rolling out.
The update which is pretty small, just 214MB in size, not only brings a new UI but also comes with November’s security patch. The changelog says Magic UI puts the focus on AI. If you remember, the Honor Magic 2 has an AI assistant called YoYo with features like in-call live voice translation and a feature similar to Google Duplex.
Magic UI 2.0 also brings a new color scheme, icons, and fonts which means your phone will look really different after applying the update. Apart from that and the features YoYo brings, the guys at XDA-Developers say Magic UI 2.0 isn’t really different from EMUI 9.

If you are the proud owner of the Honor Magic 2, you can go on and check for the update. If it isn’t available, you will have to wait since updates are usually released in batches.
The Honor Magic 2 has a slider design which lets it adopt a bezel-less screen. The front cameras and sensors are placed on the second half of the phone and are visible when you slide the phone down.
The screen is a 6.39-inch AMOLED display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Powering the phone is a Kirin 980 processor with 6GB/8GB of RAM and 128GB/256GB of expandable storage. There are three cameras on the rear of the phone – 16MP + 16MP + 24MP and another three cameras in front – 16MP + 2MP + 2MP.

When launched, the phone was running Android 7 Nougat operating system out-of-the-box and received the Android 8.1 Oreo update earlier this year. The new Android Pie update is the second major update for the Moto X4.

The Android Pie update should bring several new features to the year-old Moto X4, including the new gesture navigation, App Actions, App Slices support, Adaptive Battery, Digital Wellbeing, Dark Mode, among others.
The Moto X4 flaunts a 5.2-inch LTS IPS Full HD display with 1920 x 1080 pixels screen resolution and pixel density of 424ppi. Under the hood, the phone is powered by QualcommSnapdragon 630 octa-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz.

Apart from Moto X4, the company has also promised Android Pie update for the Moto Z3, Z3 Play, Moto Z2 Force Edition, Moto Z2 Play, Moto G6, G6 Play, and G6 Plus. The Motorola One Power was recently spotted running Android Pie, so its safe to assume that the company will soon roll out Android Pie for the One Power.

There are plenty of rumors about the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 aka Snapdragon 8150 SoC. We have got reports that the Meizu’s new device will debut on the Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 855 chipset in December. Already, it has been touted to debut with the Galaxy S9 in the early next year with the 5G support and 7nm process. The new SoC will directly compete against the Kirin 980 which have dual NPUs and support for 5G, Apple A12 which is built on 7nm and is already here with new iPhone alterations, and the Samsung’s Exynos 9820 which is built upon the 8nm process.
Today a famous user on Weibo posted that the Meizu is set for debut with the Qualcomm’s 8150 chip. The new flagship device of Meizu will feature a similar design as that of the Meizu 16th. Only, its frame will be replaced by stainless steel. There will not be any significant change rather than some tweaks in the design of the Meizu 16th. There is a probability that it might acquire a different approach in design rather than the current full view display.
If the new report is to believe, then the new Meizu 16s or any other Meizu device will be an attraction among the buyers, and it will help them to get some good sales. Still, there are many illusions about the Snapdragon 855, but we have to wait for a month more before we compare it with the competitors such as Apple A12, kirin 980 and recently launched Exynos 9820.
As per the rumors, Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 will have three-clusters CPU, and the core cluster is designed similar to Kirin 980 and Exynos 9820. Further, there will be two super large cores, two large ones and the last will be small cores. It will come with the Snapdragon X24 4G LTE based (2GBps) modem. Though, there are rumors which are also pointing towards its 5G capabilities.
Still, there are still many unanswered questions on the web about Snapdragon 855. We have to wait for some time more for the official debut of it on any mobile device.
