Fresh information that surfaced yesterday had revealed that the Nokia X6 could be the new phone that HMD Global may launch on the coming Friday. The handset is expected to arrive with a 5.8-inch display that will offer an aspect ratio of 19:9. Since phones like ASUS ZenFone 5ZOPPO F7OPPO R15OPPO R15 Dream MirrorVivo V9, and Vivo X21 that offer 19:9 aspect ratio feature a notched screen like the Apple iPhone X, it is speculated that Nokia X6 could be the first Nokia branded phone with notched screen. The above image shows that the Nokia 6X with notched screen could be the first Nokia phone to offer highest screen-to-body ratio. The notch of the phone seems to be housing a selfie camera, an earpiece and some sensors. The side bezels of the phone appear quite narrow. The slightly thicker bottom bezel seems has the Nokia branding at the bottom-right corner, instead of its usual position of top-right corner.

The Nokia X6 smartphone is expected to slot itself between the Nokia 6 (2018) and Nokia 7 Plus smartphones that were launched at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 tech trade show in February this year. The following image that also shows that the rear side of the X6 resembles the Nokia 7 Plus as it features copper accents, vertically arranged Carl ZEISS branded dual camera setup and a fingerprint reader below it. The LED flash is placed below the dual camera setup on the X6, but it is positioned on the right side of the dual rear cameras of Nokia 7 Plus.

Xiaomi Maintains Market Lead in India in Q1 2018, Huawei Joins Top Five Vendors

Xiaomi‘s exploit in India last year is still very fresh in our memories. The company dethroned Samsung in the fourth quarter of the year to emerge as the market leader in India. The Chinese tech giant seems to have consolidated on its lead in the first quarter of 2018. A recent report by Counterpoint Research has shown that Xiaomi secured a 31.1% share of the smartphone market in India in terms of shipment.

This is a leap from the 25% market share which the company achieved in Q4 2017. The report attributed Xiaomi’s success to a rise in the offline market as well as consolidating on its online channel. The company was able to record a 57% share in the online segment. Out of the Mi products, the Redmi Note 5 and Note 5 Pro were the most popular models. That isn’t a surprise due to the fact that both models.

Xiaomi is followed by Samsung in India with its market share growing from 23% in Q4 2017 to 26.2% in Q1 2018 but that still wasn’t enough to match Xiaomi’s performance. Samsung released two of its flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S9 and S9+, in Q1 2018, but its growth was largely driven by launches in the budget segment which includes the Galaxy J7 NXT and J2 (2017).

The top 5 OEMs in the Indian market got a refreshing outlook, with Huawei replacing Lenovo in the top 5 smartphone vendors list. Huawei which recently commenced a major push for the market recorded a 3.4% share volume. The growth is attributed to the positive response which the Honor 9 Lite and Honor 7x received. Other brands on the top 5 list include Vivo and OPPO which occupied the third and fourth spots. This is despite a slump in the market share of both BBK subsidiaries in India. Vivo’s market share was 5.8%, down from 6% in Q4 2017 while Oppo’s market share also fell from 6% in Q4 2017 to 5.6% in the latest quarter.

Mi Love: Indonesian Couple Names Their Daughter “Xiaomi”

Xiaomi‘s fan base is sweeping rapidly through the whole of Asia, America, Europe and even Africa. This is evident in the large reception which greets the opening of a new Mi store in any of the countries in these regions. Globally, the fan base on the Mi Forum has seen an exponential increase over the years. Some of the fans have different ways of showing their love for the Mi brand. However, we don’t think we have seen any display of Mi love which compares to what a couple in Indonesia did by naming their child Xiaomi.Xiaomi-logo-featured

We are not sure if they even know the right pronunciation of the word or its meaning but as a manifestation of their love for the innovative Mi brand, they gave their daughter who was born in August 2017, the name. Don’t think this is another hype, the disclosure was made by XIaomi’s global VP Wang Xang and he shared a picture of the child’s birth certificate along with the news. The identity of the couple was also revealed as Fredi Yana (27) and Delima (25), residents of Abungjayo Village, Abung Selatan, North Lapung. The father, Fredi is said to have been a huge fan of the Mi brand since 2016. Coincidentally, the name Xiaomi means Small Rice in Mandarin and rice is the staple food of most Indonesian families.

We don’t think we are ever going to see this having a bandwagon effect. Or perhaps, would you name your child Xiaomi? For a thousand dollars I wouldn’t but maybe there are hundreds of fans out there who would do it, even at no cost.

Sino Market Research Releases Q1 2018 Sales Report For China: OPPO On top!

Research firm Sino market research has released its sales estimation for Q1 2018 for China’s smartphone market. The report shows BBK subsidiary company OPPO has once again mounted a comeback to the top spot. OPO grabbed the most market share to emerge as the number one brand for the first quarter of 2018. The report also ranked the top six contenders to be OPPO, Vivo, Apple, Huawei, Honor and Xiaomi.

The first quarter is usually a quiet time for OEMs since a number of the phones were launched in March when the first quarter was almost wrapping up. OPPO had released its OPPO R15 smartphone quite early and that could have impacted on  its Q1 sales. Vivo also has a couple of models out in Q1.

OPPO shipped a total of 18.52 million units in the first three months of the year while Vivo followed closely with 17.34 million units. Apple had a promising start to the year in the World’s largest mobile phone market with a total Q1 shipment of 16.8 million units. Chinese tech giant and market leader, Huawei shipped 14.42 million units and its Honor brand had a total shipment of 14 million units. Xaomi completed the top 6 list with a total shipment of 12.37 million. Other brands on the list include Meizu at number 7 with 3.91 million shipments, Gionee at number 8 with 2.39 shipments while Samsung is at number 9 with a mere 2.14 million shipments.

However, these are just numbers, Apple is number one in terms of gross revenue due to its high unit price point. Apple is followed by OPPO, Huawei, Vivo and Honor. For online sales, Honor topped while Xioami is second, Apple is third, Huawei fourth and Meizu completes the top 5. Honor’s online sales were pegged at 8.954 billion Yuan, only lower than Apple’s. Nevertheless, with an increase in the number of phones released this second quarter, there is likely going to be a major change in the ranking for the second quarter.
