MediaTek Helio G100 SoC launched with support for 200MP cameras & Elevator Mode

MediaTek has launched its latest Helio G100 chipset, following the debut of the Tecno Camon 30S Pro, the first phone to feature this platform. The new chipset builds on the Helio G99 with several improvements aimed at improving camera capabilities and connectivity.

MediaTek Helio G100

Specifications and Features

The Helio G100 features an octa-core CPU composed of two 2.2 GHz Cortex-A76 cores and six 2.0 GHz Cortex-A55 cores. It uses LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.2 storage, which is still a popular choice on budget devices. The maximum supported display resolution remains at 2,520 x 1,080 pixels, the same as the Helio G99.

One notable improvement is the Helio G100’s support for 200 MP main cameras, a significant leap from the Helio G99. This makes the new chipset a strong option for devices focusing on high-resolution photography. Additionally, it can handle 16 + 16 MP dual camera setups and 32 MP video capture at 30 frames per second.

Improved Connectivity: The “Elevator Mode”

The Helio G100 introduces the “Elevator Mode,” which aims to quickly restore cellular connection after emerging from areas with no coverage, such as tunnels or elevators. This feature is useful for users who frequently move through areas with intermittent connectivity, ensuring they regain network access faster.

The chipset supports dual 4G SIM cards with both VoLTE (Voice over LTE) and ViLTE (Video over LTE) capabilities, catering to the increasing demand for enhanced voice and video calling quality over LTE networks.

Market Position and Availability

The Helio G99 was popular in mid-range smartphones in LTE markets due to its cost-effectiveness compared to Dimensity chipsets. The Helio G100 maintains this competitive pricing while offering upgraded features, making it an attractive option for manufacturers and consumers.

MediaTek has already started supplying the Helio G100 to its customers, and we can expect new smartphones featuring this chipset in the coming weeks and months.

The model also includes a 26-level wide temperature adjustable compartment, which can be customized from -20°C to 5°C, offering versatility to switch between refrigeration and freezing depending on the user’s needs.

The refrigerator is designed to maximize food freshness, boasting independent dual cooling systems for the refrigeration and freezing zones, which prevents odor mixing and enhances moisture retention.

Huawei’s upcoming tri-folding phone reportedly supports ‘PC-level’ applications and has minimal crease

Huawei is known to be working on a tri-folding device for a while. The company has also filed a number of patents for the folding technology it’s working on. A relatively recent one shows a tri-folding phone with two hinges and a flexible screen that folds outwards.

The latest news is that the tri-folding display of the phone has passed the 28μm test. The test evaluates the durability and visibility of the crease formed on the screen after repeated folding. The “28μm” (28 micrometers) measurement likely pertains to the depth of the crease that the screen develops after a certain number of folds.

In folding displays, it’s indeed a challenge to maintain the integrity of the screen over numerous folds and not develop a visible crease.

The tri-folding phone reportedly has the potential to replace tablets and book-style foldables

Alongside the achievement in folding technology, the phone reportedly has the potential to replace tablets and book-style foldables. The rumor hints that with the help of the HarmonyOS NEXT operating system and a new Kirin processor, the phone will be able to run many “PC-level applications” and strengthen the company’s ecosystem of products.

However, according to a previous leak, the phone is going to be expensive and will be available in limited units. As the leak suggested, it could be more of a “show muscle” rather than a product that aims to occupy a significant market share. It was reported that the dual-hinge phone will be powered by a Kirin 9 series chipset and will also offer the company’s latest innovations in artificial intelligence. The mass production of the device is said to be scheduled for the fourth quarter of this year.

Honor 300 Pro render shows a unique back design

Honor launched the Honor 200 Pro towards the end of May this year with the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset. While it’s only been slightly over two months, the successor has already entered the conversation. A rendering of the Honor 300 Pro has surfaced on the internet that also speculates some of the specifications of the device.

As you can see from the image, the phone is expected to come with a uniquely designed camera module, that includes three lenses and a flash module. On the front, the phone packs a curved display. Upon closer inspection, you will see that the front includes a dual-camera setup for the front, just like its predecessor. Notably, the predecessor also comes with a similar curved display with narrow and almost symmetrical bezels.

According to the render, the back panel will have similar stripes as the predecessor. However, the branding seems to be relatively well-pronounced this time.

Speaking of the internals, here are some guesses made by netizens. The camera setup is expected to include a 50MP main sensor and support 50X zoom with a periscope telephoto. Speaking of performance, the phone is expected to equip the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip and pack a 5300mAh battery inside, that will support 100W wired and 66W wireless fast charging.

On the front, the phone will have the second-generation Honor Oasis eye protection screen with zero-risk dual ultra-high frequency dimming. It is also expected to be IP68 dust and water-resistant and support NFC and IR blaster for remote control functionality.

While the information above is rumored, we can take a look at the predecessor to get an idea of what to expect. The Honor 200 Pro comes with a 6.78 (1224 x 2700) OLED display that goes up to 4000 nits in peak brightness. It was launched with MagicOS 8, which is based on Android 14. The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip is paired with 12GB or 16GB RAM and 256GB or 512GB or 1TB storage. The phone offers a 50MP main, 50MP 2.5X telephoto, and a 12MP ultrawide on the back. There is a 5200 mAh battery inside, which also supports 100W wired and 66W wireless charging.

Huawei has launched a new version of its MateView SE monitor, now featuring a 100Hz refresh rate. The monitor is available in two versions: the Standard Stand Version, which offers tilt adjustment and starts at 569 Yuan ($79), and the Rotating and Height-Adjustable Stand Version, which adds rotation, height adjustment, and VESA mount compatibility, starting at 669 Yuan ($93).

Huawei MateView SE Monitor

Huawei MateView SE Monitor Specifications:

The primary enhancement in this new model is the increased refresh rate, which has been upgraded from the previous 75Hz to 100Hz. This upgrade ensures smoother visuals, whether you’re browsing the web or watching high-frame-rate videos. However, it’s worth noting that the old VGA port has been removed in this new version, with the rest of the specifications remaining largely unchanged from the original model.

The MateView SE monitor features a 23.8-inch IPS panel with a micro-bezel design that provides a 92% screen-to-body ratio. The display offers a resolution of 1920×1080 and a wide 178-degree viewing angle, ensuring consistent and vibrant visuals from any angle.

Huawei MateView SE Monitor

It offers a wide color gamut with 16.7 million colors and covers 90% of the DCI-P3 color space, making it capable of delivering vibrant and true-to-life colors. The monitor also boasts a high color accuracy, with a ΔE value of less than 2, ensuring precise color reproduction. Each unit undergoes professional color calibration before leaving the factory to maintain this high level of accuracy.

To reduce eye strain, the Huawei MateView SE comes with TÜV Rheinland certification for low blue light and flicker-free performance. Additionally, it includes an e-book mode that simulates the look of paper, providing a more comfortable reading experience by thickening the font and reducing eye fatigue.

For control, the monitor uses a five-way joystick, which allows for quick and intuitive adjustments to the on-screen display (OSD) menu. This design replaces traditional button layouts and offers a more user-friendly interface.

In terms of connectivity, the Huawei MateView SE features HDMI and DP interfaces, making it compatible with various devices, including laptops, desktops, and gaming consoles.

The ergonomic design of the stand, which is adjustable in both versions, allows users to set the monitor at a comfortable viewing angle, further enhancing the user experience.

Google Pixel Watch 3 is rumored to offer a much brighter display than the Pixel Watch 2

The Pixel Watch 3 is expected to be officially announced at Google’s hardware event on August 13 alongside the Google Pixel 9 series. Ahead of the launch, a new leak claims that the Pixel Watch 3 will come with an improved display and battery life.

Pixel Watch 3 is expected to offer a 2000-nit display, which is 100% brighter than its predecessor

A leaked promo video revealed the design and some of the features of the upcoming Pixel Watch 3. According to the leaked video, the smartwatch will be available in two different sizes – 41mm dial and 45mm dial. You can also see the classic circular design from the image above. The presence of a 45mm model was also previously mentioned in a report from 9to5Google. There will also be a rotating crown located at the center on the right side.

Although the design (shown in the promo video) looks very similar to the predecessor, it appears to come with at least one significant improvement. The bezels look slimmer than the Pixel Watch 2.

According to previous reports, the product will also come with a set of straps and an extra active band. There will also be a USB-C charging cable in the box that attaches magnetically to the watch.

The promo video also highlights some of the fitness features of the upcoming Google watch. It will offer real-time advice during a run. There could also be features like Cardio Load. It seems that the company is aiming to make it one of the best fitness-tracking watches.

The watch will also offer a ‘Morning Brief notification’ that will help users get ready for the day. It should include things like a “Readiness Score” which Fitbit has been offering for a while.

Although the leaked video only shows the all-black color, there have been reports claiming that the product will also come in blue and pink color options. Alongside slimmer bezels, the display will reportedly offer a peak brightness of 2000 nits. For reference, the predecessor can only hit a peak brightness of 1000 nits and the Apple Watch Series 9 reaches 2000 nits.

Although the specific batter capacity has not been revealed yet, it is rumored to be 36 hours in power-saving mode and 24 hours in normal mode.

Google fixes numerous security vulnerabilities in Android with the August security update

Today Google has released an Android security update, which reportedly fixes 46 security vulnerabilities. It also includes a zero-day vulnerability.

For those unfamiliar, a zero-day vulnerability is a security flaw in software, hardware, or firmware that threat actors exploit before the vendor can identify and fix it. The term “zero-day” comes from the amount of time the vendor has to prepare a patch, which is zero days because the vulnerability has already been discovered or exploited.

Google released two batches of patches in the August security update to fix the vulnerabilities

This particular zero-day vulnerability (which is a use-after-free type vulnerability) marked as CVE-2024-36971 reportedly exists in the Linux kernel used by the Android system to manage network routing. Even though exploiting this vulnerability requires system-level execution privileges, Google pointed out in its security bulletin that there are signs that this zero-day vulnerability may be subject to limited, targeted attacks.

Once a bad actor has successfully exploited this vulnerability, he should be able to execute arbitrary code on unpatched devices without any input from the user. The zero-day vulnerability was discovered by Clément Lecigne, a security researcher at Google, in the Threat Analysis Group (TAG).

Google did not disclose the specific details of the vulnerability in order to give Android phone users enough time to update and repair their devices.

As mentioned before, there were 45 other vulnerabilities as well. To address all the vulnerabilities, Google released two batches of patches in the August security update, which are marked as 2024-08-01 and 2024-08-05. Notably, the second batch of patches includes fixes for third-party closed-source components and kernel components alongside all the fixes in the first batch. Therefore users are advised to install the patches once they are available. While Google’s Pixel devices get the updates quickly, it may take a while for other manufacturers to push the update to certain models.

This model features a glass back that has a pill shaped raised camera module. So it would feel more premium compared to the Reno 12 Pro. It gets a higher IP68 rating for protection against water and dust.

Nvidia is working on an AI GPU with 144GB HBM3E memory

According to TrendForce, Nvidia is working on the next generation of B100 and B200 GPUs that are based on the Blackwell architecture. The new GPUs are expected to hit the market in the second half of this year and will be used for CSP cloud customers. For those unfamiliar, “CSP cloud customers” refers to customers who use Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) for their cloud computing needs. The company will also add a streamlined version of the B200A for OEM enterprise customers with edge AI needs.

It is reported that TSMC‘s CoWoS-L packaging capacity (that is used by the B200 series) continues to be tight. It is mentioned that the B200A will switch to the relatively simple CoWoS-S packaging technology. The company is focusing on the B200A to meet the requirements of the Cloud Service Providers.

B200A technical specifications:

Unfortunately, the technical specifications of the B200A are yet to be fully clear. For now, it can only be confirmed that the capacity of HBM3E memory is reduced from 192GB to 144 GB. It is also reported that the number of layers of the memory chip is halved from eight to four. Nonetheless, the capacity of a single chip is increased from 24GB to 36 GB.

Source: TrendForce

The power consumption of the B200A will be lower than the B200 GPUs and it will not require liquid cooling. The air cooling system of the new GPUs will also make them more easy to set up. B200A is expected to be supplied to OEM manufacturers around the second quarter of next year.

Supply chain surveys show that NVIDIA’s main high-end GPU shipments in 2024 will be based on the Hopper platform, with H100 and H200 for the North American market and H20 for the Chinese market. As the B200A will become available around the second quarter of 2025, it is expected to not interfere with the H200, which will arrive on or after the third quarter.

Is iPhone 13 still worth buying in 2024?

When the iPhone 13 was launched in 2021, it was praised for its powerful features and well-balanced design, making it a strong contender in the smartphone market. But now, with the iPhone 16 on the horizon in 2024, it’s time to reconsider whether the iPhone 13 is still a wise investment.

And why should you take my word for it? Because I personally own an iPhone 13 and use it as my primary phone.

Apple-iPhone-13

1. Battery Backup

One of the most significant issues I’ve noticed over time is the battery life. Initially, the iPhone 13 had a solid battery performance, but recent iOS updates have noticeably reduced its longevity. It’s frustrating to see the battery percentage drop significantly after just a few hours of regular use. For someone like me, who is always on the go, this has become a major inconvenience. The constant need to charge the phone, sometimes more than twice a day, detracts from the seamless experience. Although it’s been 2 years and the battery would naturally degrade too; I am currently sitting on 86%. While I might need to consider replacing the battery, having to do so within just 2 years doesn’t really make much sense.

2. Performance Issues

When I first got my hands on the iPhone 13, the performance was nothing short of impressive. But as time passed, I began noticing occasional lags and freezes, particularly when using certain apps like WhatsApp. There have been moments when the phone simply refused to respond, leaving me staring at a frozen screen for a few seconds. While it’s not a constant issue, it’s frequent enough to be bothersome, especially for a device that once boasted flagship performance.

3. Missing Features: Telephoto Lens and Refresh Rate

The camera on the iPhone 13 is undoubtedly one of its strong points, delivering sharp and detailed photos that I’ve come to rely on for both personal and professional use.

However, it’s important to think about the telephoto lens. While I know the base model iPhones lack this feature, many Android competitors in the sub-40k range include it. Opting for a phone in the 50k budget without a telephoto lens might not be the best choice. In today’s market, even mid-range Android phones come with telephoto lenses, providing more versatility in photography.

Another area where the iPhone 13 falls short is the display. While the Super Retina XDR display is stunning, it’s limited to a 60Hz refresh rate. With Android phones offering 120Hz and even 144Hz refresh rates at much lower prices, the iPhone 13 feels outdated in comparison. The difference in smoothness is noticeable, especially when scrolling through apps or playing games. For someone who appreciates a fluid and responsive display, this limitation is disappointing.

4. Storage Limitations

When I purchased the iPhone 13, I opted for the 128GB model, thinking it would be sufficient for my needs. However, I’ve found myself bumping up against the storage limit more often than I expected. While iCloud is a viable solution, it’s an additional cost that not everyone is willing to take on. If you’re considering the iPhone 13, I’d strongly recommend going for the 256GB model to avoid running out of space too soon.

5. Gaming and Heating Issues

Gaming on the iPhone 13 is a mixed bag. While the device delivers consistent frame rates, which is essential for competitive games like BGMI or PUBG Mobile, it also heats up quickly. After just 30 minutes of gaming, the phone tends to get uncomfortably warm, causing the display to dim and the overall gaming experience to suffer. This is particularly frustrating for someone who enjoys mobile gaming as a way to unwind.

6. Cable Dilemma

Another annoyance I’ve faced is with the durability of Apple’s cables. In just two years, I’ve had to replace two of them, despite not being a rugged user. In contrast, some of my older Android phone cables, which are nearly a decade old, are still functioning perfectly. While this issue isn’t specific to the iPhone 13, it’s an aspect of the Apple experience that continues to disappoint.

7. Final Verdict

As Apple gears up to launch the iPhone 16, the iPhone 13 is now three generations old. This means that while it will continue to receive software updates for a few more years, the newer models offer significantly better features, such as improved cameras, Dynamic Island, and higher refresh rates. Additionally, with the iPhone 13 available for around 50,000 INR on e-commerce platforms, there are Android phones in the same price range that offer more features, such as telephoto lenses and 144Hz displays.

In conclusion, while the iPhone 13 is still a capable phone, it’s not necessarily the best investment in 2024 unless you can find it for a significantly reduced price, ideally between 30,000 to 25,000 INR. For those willing to explore other options, the sub-50,000 INR segment offers plenty of fantastic Android alternatives that provide better value for money. If you’re only upgrading for the Apple logo, that’s a personal choice, but for those who prioritize features and performance, there are better options out there.

Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 vs. Snapdragon 4 Gen 2: Is New Always Better?

Qualcomm recently announced its new SoC, the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2. While this new processor is expected to be used in budget-friendly smartphones, still boasts some impressive features. However, it also raises some questions.

As you know, Qualcomm already has another model with a similar name, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2. So, what are the differences between these two processors? If we have to choose, which one should we prefer? Let’s dive into the details to find the answer.

Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 vs. Snapdragon 4 Gen 2

When buying a new smartphone, the plethora of options can be overwhelming. If you’re already struggling with choosing among hundreds of models from dozens of brands, seeing Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 in one device and Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 in another might complicate things even further.

Although both processors are designed to power entry-level devices, their differences can significantly impact user experience. In this article, we will compare the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 and Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 in terms of technical specifications, performance, and overall user experience.

1. Technical Specifications Comparison

snapdragon-4s-gen-2-vs-snapdragon-4-gen-2-3

Let’s start our comparison with the technical specifications. Both SoCs are developed with a 4nm manufacturing process, but there are differences. The Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 offers high performance with Kryo cores clocked up to 2.2 GHz and an Adreno 613 GPU, while the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 features Kryo cores clocked up to 2.0 GHz and an Adreno 610 GPU.

Both models provide 5G connectivity for high-speed internet access. Regarding camera support, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 supports up to 108 MP, whereas the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 supports up to 84 MP. However, this might not be a significant issue since smartphones in this price segment usually don’t have such high-resolution cameras.

Additionally, both models support Quick Charge 4+ technology for fast charging. The Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 supports Full HD+ displays with a 120 Hz refresh rate, while the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 supports Full HD+ displays with a 90 Hz refresh rate.

2. CPU and GPU Performance

The Snapdragon 4 Gen 2, with its higher clock speeds and more advanced GPU, offers faster and smoother performance in daily use. The advantages of the Adreno 613 GPU become evident, especially in graphics-intensive applications and games.

3. Connectivity Features

Both processors offer 5G support, but the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2, with the Snapdragon X61 5G Modem-RF system, delivers higher speeds and better efficiency. This translates to faster internet connectivity and more reliable coverage.

4. Energy Efficiency and Battery Life

Snapdragon 4 Gen 2

Thanks to the 4nm manufacturing process, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 is highly efficient in terms of energy consumption. Lower power consumption extends battery life, allowing the device to be used longer. Additionally, it offers faster charging capabilities with Quick Charge 4+ technology.

Snapdragon 4s Gen 2

Also produced with the 4nm process, the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 is quite efficient in energy consumption. However, it still provides decent performance and battery life for an entry-level device.

At the end of the day, although the two processors are quite similar to each other, the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 offers very few advantages over its predecessor, aside from being newer. In many categories, the older model stands out.

It’s also worth noting that both processors offer similar experiences in daily use. Therefore, it would be best to choose based on the features and budget of the phone you plan to buy.
