Xiaomi breaks into top 3 as China sells nearly 5 million monitors in H1 2024

In a surprising market shift, Xiaomi has surged into the top three monitor brands in China, according to the latest report from Runto Technology. AOC Leads as Xiaomi Gains in China’s Monitor Sales

While the overall market experienced a slight uptick, traditional e-commerce sales dipped by 0.7% year-over-year, indicating a maturing market. Despite this, the sector still dominates with a 91.7% share. Average monitor prices also dropped by 8% to 1,064 yuan ($146), driven by a growing low-end market.

Runto H1 2024 Chinese Monitor Report

AOC maintained its lead as the top monitor brand, but its growth faltered compared to the previous year. The company’s reliance on 27-inch QHD models, particularly the popular Q27G2S/D, while successful, may have limited its expansion.

HKC, known for its gaming-centric lineup, held the second spot. The brand’s focus on 27-inch QHD gaming monitors resonated with consumers, contributing to 80% of its sales.

Xiaomi’s ascent to the third position is a testament to its diversified product strategy. Unlike its competitors, Xiaomi prioritized office productivity with a strong emphasis on 27-inch FHD monitors. This approach appears to have captured a significant market share, especially in the budget-friendly segment.

The growing low-end market, now accounting for 2% more than the previous year, has been a boon for Xiaomi and LingShe. Together, they control a substantial 33% of the market below the 500 yuan ($69) price point.

While the gaming segment remains a significant driver for monitor sales, the growing importance of remote work and online education is likely to boost demand for office-oriented displays. Brands that can successfully balance these two market segments are poised to achieve long-term success.

It will be interesting to observe how the monitor market unfolds in the second half of 2024. Will Xiaomi be able to sustain its momentum, or will established players like AOC and HKC reclaim lost ground? Only time will tell.

Researchers develop indoor solar cells with up to 37% efficiency

Some researchers at the University of Kaunas, Lithuania have developed indoor solar cells with 37% charging efficiency. It has been a challenge previously to convert artificial light to energy when compared to solar energy conversion. The Lithuania-based research group has developed a new type of perovskite solar cell with high efficiency and capability for drawing power from artificial light.

Solar panel

Current photovoltaic cells hardly work indoors where artificial light with a smaller spectrum and less energy is present. There are a lot of small devices such as smart sensors, digital clocks, and similar low-energy devices that function at night when solar energy is not available. The new indoor solar cells therefore provide new vistas for many possibilities. The cells could provide power for these devices based on minimal artificial light which is almost always available at night.

The new solar cells were developed to be efficient and capable of handling energy from a limited light spectrum. The material is made from an organic semiconductor combined with perovskite resulting in a decent energy conversion rate. The light source used in the experiments conducted by the research team was a warm white LED with a temperature of 3,000 Kelvin, corresponding to the typical room temperature for living rooms. The spectrum is similar to that of natural light but it lacks infrared radiation. Apart from a special layer of perovskite, the cell utilizes thiazole molecules to conduct positive charges. The extensive experiments yielded a 37% efficiency using light from a standard LED. The efficiency of the new solar cell technology is just 19% when utilizing solar energy.

There are no indications yet on the timelines for the transition of indoor solar cell technology into a commercial product. The optics are however good that the model will become a reality later.

Apple Caught Using Google Tech to Build Apple Intelligence

The rivalry between Apple and Google continues at full speed. Although we usually hear about the competition between Android and iOS, this race is expanding into different categories with advancing technology. The latest of these is undoubtedly artificial intelligence, despite being a relatively new technology.

However, it seems that this animosity doesn’t mean they can’t benefit from each other. In fact, a new AI research paper published by Apple reveals that Apple is using Google hardware to lay the first foundations of Apple Intelligence. Here are the details…

Apple Apple Uses Google’s TPU Clusters to train Apple Intelligence

Apple and Google are often considered rivals in the tech world, but it is noteworthy that Apple is using Google hardware in its AI research. It has been revealed that Apple is developing its AI models using Google’s v4 and v5p Cloud TPU clusters.

This information was disclosed in a newly published research paper by Apple. The study, titled “Apple Intelligence Foundation Language Models,” details the sources and development processes underlying Apple’s new AI technology.

The paper explains the data sources Apple used to train its AI models and the techniques applied during this process. However, the most striking detail is that Apple initially utilized Google’s v4 and v5p Cloud TPU clusters.

For those who may not know, Google’s Cloud TPU clusters are designed to meet high-performance computing needs, making them an ideal platform for intensive computational tasks such as training large language models.

The likely reason behind Apple’s move is “speed.” Although many of us may have forgotten, the AI craze that began with the announcement of ChatGPT is not even two years old.

This means companies need time to develop their own technologies. While some may act more quickly in this regard, Apple might have wanted to save time by using its competitor’s technologies.

Nevertheless, this is only a temporary solution. Apple plans to invest over $5 billion in AI developments over the next two years. This investment is seen as part of Apple’s goal to catch up with the technological capabilities of industry leaders like Microsoft and Meta.

Whether they will succeed remains to be seen.

DJI is a market leader in the drone market and has an innovative and widening portfolio of impressive drones for a wide variety of operational scenarios. Several DJI drones have leaked but are yet to be officially released including the DJI Mavic 4 and DJI Osmo Action 5. The target audience for the new DJI Neo is users of mini-camera drones. The DJI Mini series include some pretty small models but the Neo is coming in an even smaller and lighter form factor.

The upcoming DJI Neo is a professional-grade mini drone with a weight less about 170 grams. It is noted that there are currently smaller nano drones such as the HoverAir X1 (130g) which is much smaller than the DJI Neo. The HoverAir X1 is foldable and is self-flying and the Neo will compete against it. The name of the DJI Neo was confirmed via the FCC certification for the model. The technical details of the DJI Neo are not known fully as the FCC certification details omitted such information. It is however reported that the DJI Neo has a 1,435mAh battery and a recent X video by drone tipster OsitaLV showed the model in flight.

It is speculated that the DJI Neo will deliver up to 15 minutes of flight time and comes with a significantly smaller battery than the DJI Mini 4 Pro. The drone could be suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. It features a propeller cage and a single-axis gimbal-stabilized camera. The foldability of the drone was not evident in the leaked video and it is unclear whether the drone is self-flying. The model, as per the video, comes with a classic controller which could indicate it is not self-flying.

DJI has not released any official details yet on the rumored DJI Neo mini camera drone. It is however expected that the model could be close to an official release. Exact pricing and release details could then be released later.

Redmi Note 14 Pro+ may downgrade main camera to 50MP and keep 2MP macro

Xiaomi is actively working on the upcoming Redmi Note series. The smartphones were previously spotted on the IMEI listing, and their recent appearance on China’s Radio Certification further confirms that all three models in the Redmi Note 14 series—Note 14, Note 14 Pro, and Note 14 Pro+—are in the works.

Now a tipster on X (formerly Twitter), Kartikey Singh, who frequently shares details about Xiaomi products, has revealed the camera details for the Redmi Note 14 Pro+. Surprisingly, the leaked details suggest a downgrade rather than an upgrade.

According to Singh, the Redmi Note 14 Pro+ will feature a triple camera setup on the back, led by a 50MP lens. This is a downgrade from its predecessor, the Note 13 Pro+, which boasted a 200MP main camera. However, Xiaomi might compensate with a better image sensor.

The other two cameras are expected to be the same as before: an 8MP ultrawide and a 2MP macro lens. Interestingly, the tipster claims that Xiaomi originally planned to include a telephoto lens but decided to drop it.

Additionally, a report from earlier this week suggests that the Note 14 Pro+ may feature a 1.5K resolution curved-edge OLED panel, a plastic frame, and an optical in-screen fingerprint sensor for security.

Redmi-Note-13-Pro-Plus

Under the hood, the Pro+ model is rumored to have a Dimensity chipset, built using TSMC’s second-generation 4nm process, with a 3GHz main frequency. While not confirmed, it could be the MediaTek’s new Dimensity 7350 chip. This is the same chip that will power the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus, set to launch on July 31 in India.

Xiaomi initially launched the Redmi Note 13 series in China in September, so we might expect a similar launch timeframe for the Note 14 series. Although nothing is confirmed for the time being.
