Alibaba’s Quark AI glasses, launched earlier this month, have now officially gone on sale in China. The company has opened purchases for three variants of the flagship S1 model and three versions of the more affordable G1 model. Both series pair with Alibaba’s new Qwen App, which uses the company’s in-house AI system to provide voice- and touch-based assistance.

The Quark AI Glasses S1 function as a wearable AI assistant for real-time translation, object recognition, POV video capture and voice interaction. The device runs on Alibaba’s Qwen large language model to provide hands-free access to contextual information throughout the day.

The S1 uses dual Micro LED light engines and diffractive waveguide lenses, delivering up to 2,300 nits of eye brightness. Users can adjust both the viewing distance and display height, and Alibaba supports prescription lenses from 0 to 800 degrees in 1.6, 1.67 and 1.74 refractive index options. The frame weighs 51g and uses a 7.5mm slim temple arm with balanced weight distribution.

The device runs on a dual-chip setup combining Qualcomm’s Snapdragon AR1 for AR tasks and the BES2800 chip for audio. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 5.4 and Wi-Fi 6. The S1 features five microphones, including a bone-conduction mic, and dual 10mm speakers.

Imaging is handled by a Sony IMX681 sensor with a 109-degree field of view. It captures 4032×3024 photos and records 3K 30fps video with EIS stabilization, Super Night Mode and instant capture support.

Power comes from two 280mAh swappable batteries housed in the temples. Users can extend usage with a 700mAh MiniBag dock, a 2500mAh charging case or a USB-C fast-charging clip that delivers 50 percent power in 10 minutes. Expected runtimes include 45 minutes of calling, 2.5 hours of music, 20 minutes of navigation and 15 short video clips. Pricing & availability

Alibaba has yet to disclose whether the glasses will be sold outside China. The S1 and G1 are currently listed on Chinese e-commerce platforms at ¥3,799 ($537) and ¥1,899 ($268).

Tool Usage: Hit 74.8 on Tau2-Bench, which measures how well models can actually use APIs and external tools. This beat both Claude Opus 4 and DeepSeek V3.1, which is honestly surprising.

But here’s where it gets really wild: they’re working on Qwen3-Max-Thinking, a reasoning-focused variant that’s still in training. In early tests that included tool usage and parallel compute during inference, it scored perfect 100% on both AIME 25 and HMMT, two of the most brutal mathematical reasoning benchmarks in AI. This version comes with an integrated code interpreter and focuses on complex logical problem-solving.

Multilingual and Multimodal Story

While the current public release focuses heavily on reasoning and coding, Alibaba built Qwen3-Max to handle multilingual tasks with particular strength in English and Chinese. The improvements are significant across instruction-following, mathematical reasoning, scientific tasks, and, this is important, it produces fewer hallucinations than previous versions.

The model shows major improvements in areas that actually matter for real-world deployment: better logic, more accurate math, stronger scientific reasoning, and more reliable responses overall.

The DingTalk A1 is a slim AI-powered recording card that works with the newly launched AI Note system. It records, transcribes, translates, summarizes, and analyzes conversations. The device connects directly with the DingTalk app, making it a pocket-sized AI assistant for professionals.

The hardware targets roles such as sales teams, HR, lawyers, teachers, doctors, and customer service staff. It automatically turns spoken conversations into digital notes, summaries, and structured insights that can be shared within DingTalk. The device includes over 30 scenario-based templates covering meetings, interviews, consultations, and classroom use.

The A1 measures 3.8mm thick and weighs 40.8g. It attaches magnetically to the back of a smartphone for call recording and quick memos. The device uses a BES2800 6nm AI audio chip from Hengxuan Technology and features a 660mAh battery. It supports up to 45 hours of continuous recording or 60 days on standby. Local storage capacity is 64GB.

The flagship version has an aluminum alloy body, a small front display, and two control buttons. It comes with six microphones, including one bone conduction microphone, that capture voices within 8 meters. The system can reduce more than 500 types of background noise. Recordings are encrypted across device, app, and cloud, with enterprise options for private deployment and centralized data management.

The device also enables real-time translation, with text shown on the DingTalk app or projected on a larger screen. In interviews, HR teams can receive automatic summaries of candidates’ profiles and communication abilities. In meetings, it can generate mind maps and organize customer information.

Pricing and Availability

DingTalk launched two versions of the device. The flagship edition costs 799 yuan ($112) and includes unlimited speech-to-text conversion, unlimited cloud storage, support for 120 languages, and unlimited AI-generated analyses. The youth edition costs 499 yuan ($70) and has a leather-like finish without a front display. It includes 1,000 minutes of transcription and 10GB of cloud storage per month, with support for three languages.

The first batch of flagship models sold out on Tmall. DingTalk will begin open sales on September 15 through its official flagship store.

Singles’ Day is a pretty big event in China for customers

From October 12 to 23, Alibaba is giving away a whopping 1 billion yuan (about $137 million) in cash coupons through its live-streaming platform, Taobao Live. The company aims to be the go-to place for the best online deals, offering consumers more bang for their yuan. Meanwhile, JD.com is not to be left behind; it’s kickstarting its own Singles’ Day extravaganza on October 23 with an event themed “real cheap.” Over 800 million products will go on sale, and JD.com is also offering 10 billion yuan worth of price subsidies and free shipping for selected items.

Interestingly, the e-commerce giants are changing their game plan due to economic pressures, signaling a move away from lavish promotions and shifting toward what Chinese consumers seem to want most—low prices.

However, this new approach comes with its own set of challenges. JD.com, for example, is already feeling the heat with less-than-impressive retail revenue growth in the last quarter. Alibaba too is aware of the stakes, with founder Jack Ma advising a renewed focus on Taobao and its consumer base to sustain in a fiercely competitive market.

Recently Alibaba the Chinese technology conglomerate launched its much-awaited ChatGPT rival ‘Tongyi Qianwen’ for enterprise testing. And on Tuesday, during Alibaba Group Holding’s Annual Cloud Summit in Beijing Chairman and CEO Daniel Zhang Yong announced plans to incorporate their ChatGPT-like service, ‘Tongyi Qianwen’, into the company’s products and services.

The tech giant announced that Tongyi Qianwen will possess the ability to support both Chinese and English languages and will be integrated into current products like DingTalk, Alibaba’s enterprise communication and collaboration platform, and the smart home device Tmall Genie. However, no timeline was disclosed for the actual launch and integration.

In his keynote speech, CEO Zhang announced that all products of Alibaba will be incorporated into their extensive language model and will undergo a thorough improvement. He further added that this move was planned to elevate the intelligence of all Alibaba services and bring forth possibilities that were previously inconceivable.

CEO Zhang further said that businesses in all industries have begun to adopt intelligent transformation in order to maintain a competitive edge, and the world is at a pivotal moment of technological advancement fueled by generative AI and cloud computing.

Following the announcement by CEO Zhang, the Hong Kong-listed shares of Alibaba recorded a 3.12% rise in trading. Conversely, the shares of Baidu dropped by over 4%, due to the company’s recent setbacks in the artificial intelligence market.

Alibaba’s Tongyi Qianwen is a highly advanced AI model designed to understand and respond to human commands. It serves as an efficient assistant and can even generate ideas. It is being developed by Alibaba’s advanced research institute, the DAMO Academy. 

Baidu, Tencent, and JD.com are among several other Chinese tech companies that have introduced or declared their intentions to introduce their own chatbots utilizing AI technology which is similar to Open AI’s ChatGPT.

China has acquired ‘Golden Shares’ in a couple of domestic subsidiaries of the tech giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, strengthening its control over the company. Beijing is also proposing to get similar shares in Tencent Holdings and other tech giants, revealing its plans to sway the power equation of technology companies in the country. Other firms which already have such golden share arrangements include subsidiaries of TikTok owner ByteDance, Kuaishou Technology, Weibo, etc.

‘Golden Shares’ are a type of share that gives its holder veto power over the company’s major decisions, even though he or she may not be a majority shareholder. In the case of Alibaba Group, the government has acquired a minority stake of about 1% which comes with special management rights. The government purchases such Golden Shares in tech giants through government-backed funds or state-run companies. It then appoints a government representative to the board of directors with veto power to change any major decision taken by the company. 

The Alibaba group has been a target of a severe crackdown by the regulatory authorities over the past few months. Apart from Alibaba, several other homegrown technology giants like Tencent, Didi Global Inc, etc also faced the government’s wrath. During the two-year regulatory crackdown, hefty fines and penalties were imposed on tech giants, which erased more than $1 trillion in the market value of these firms. 

With the zero covid policy and the subjugation of the major tech industries, the economic structure of China has worsened over the years. The restrictions and censorship on E-sports alone have wiped out millions from the Chinese economy. 

China’s gaming revenue for 2022 stood at a whopping $44bn. With more than 655 million mobile gamers and a $24 billion market share, the government cannot afford to lose gaming and other internet and technology businesses. Thus, it seems like Beijing is now acquiring management rights in major tech giants to reform and revive the sector.  

Therefore, the plan to acquire Golden Shares and gain special management rights can be seen as a sign of revival, to end the two-year crackdown, and move past the severe censorship.

Chinese tech conglomerate, Alibaba is known locally and globally for its e-commerce online trading platforms which have enabled a more globalised economy in the 2010s and 2020s. Recently, Alibaba-owned Southeast Asian online shopping platform, Lazada, has gone through a management reshuffle and has appointed a new CEO for the Lazada company.

As of Jun 3rd, the new chief executive officer for Lazada in the Southeast Asian region is Mr James Dong, replacing former CEO, Chun Li. 

Dong was a former associate partner at McKinsey & Co and a proud MBA graduate from Cambridge University. He had served as the head of globalization strategy and corporate development at Alibaba Group and as a business assistant to group CEO Zhang before joining Lazada as its CEO for Thailand in 2018.

In 2019, Dong was then appointed for CEO for Lazada Vietnam as well while still holding the position of CEO for Lazada Thailand. During his term as CEO, he oversaw a push to bolster logistics and improve operations to cope with rising orders at the height of the pandemic. Between June and August of 2021, at the peak of the fourth wave of Covid-19 in Vietnam, Lazada’s orders in the country quadrupled from a year earlier, Bloomberg reported, quoting Dong.

“Since James joined Lazada in 2018, he has quickly delivered success in his various roles,” the company said in its statement.

Dong has since passed on the Vietnam top role to Kaya Qin and had continued on as CEO for Thailand, where he led the launch of a new social commerce platform.

Chun Li, the former CEO of Lazada for the entire Southeast Asian market since 2020, has now been delegated a new role as advisor to Lazada Group Chairman Jiang Fan and stay on the company’s board, according to a company statement.

The Lazada brand has recently been facing fierce competition in the Southeast Asian market with rapidly growing e-commerce sites in the region such as Shopee and JD. Despite these growing concerns, the Lazada brand is reportedly looking for expansion into the European market as well to continue growing its business operations.

China’s biggest shopping festival is here, and it’s not a coincidence that it’s also the world’s biggest shopping event. To give you a scale of how massive the Singles Day (also known as Double Eleven) event is — in 2020 alone, the total sales during this shopping festival reached 498 billion yuan ($78 billion). In comparison, the Black Friday weekend sale in the US generated only around $22 billion in the same year. 

Undoubtedly, China’s massive population is to credit for these humongous figures, but there’s no denying that new-age interactive sales techniques like live stream commerce and a rapid expansion in the country’s logistics network (nearly 3 billion parcels were shipped between Nov 11-16 across China in 2020) has magnified the scale of this shopping event.

History of Singles Day Festival in China

Although Singles Day started off as a celebration of bachelors, today, it’s much more than that. 

The concept of celebrating the ‘single life’ started gaining traction in the college campuses of 90s China. Eventually, this idea spread across the country via the internet and other media. November 11 is celebrated as Singles Day due to its numerical significance. The date consists of four ‘1’ wherein ‘1’ stands for a ‘single’ person. So November 11 i.e. 11/11 represents four singles together.

But China’s Singles day had nothing to do with shopping until 2009 when Alibaba decided to popularize this day with a huge shopping event, much like the Black Friday in the US. Within a span of a few years, Singles Day went from the biggest shopping festival in China to the world’s biggest shopping spree, dwarfing big international shopping events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, combined.

And, what was initially a 24-hour shopping window on November 11 has now expanded into a two to three week sales event. And it’s not just Alibaba,but all major retailers across China like JD.com, Pinduoduo, and Suning, participate in this mega sales festival.

Double Eleven in Numbers

To understand the massive scale of this shopping event, let’s take a quick look at some key stats over the past few years.

I mentioned that Singles Day was many times bigger than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. So, here’s a simple bar chart comparing Singles Day sales figures to Thanksgiving sales in the US from Statistica.

As you can see in the chart above, the rate at which Singles Day sales have grown is quite astonishing. In 2015, Alibaba generated GMV (Gross Merchandise Value) worth $14.3 billion during the event, but by 2019, this figure grew to $38.4 billion. And last year, Alibaba managed to nearly double this figure, generating a massive GMV of over $76 billion! This dwarfs the GMV of Thanksgiving weekend sales in the US, which was only around $22 billion in 2020. 

Singles Day has managed to break records every year, and last year was no exception. Let’s take a quick look at the key figures from the Singles Day festival in 2020. 

Singles Day 2020

2020 (Nov 1 – 11) was the biggest Singles Day event till date for Alibaba and China, breaking all previous records.

• Last year between Nov 1 to 11, Alibaba alone generated around $78.1 billion in GMV (RMB 498.2 billion). Alibaba’s rival, JD.com booked around $42.47 billion in GMV (RMB 271.5 billion yuan) during the event.
• To give you some context, US’ thanksgiving weekend sales generated around $22 billion in GMV in 2020.
• During the first 11 days of the Double Eleven event, couriers processed and shipped over 3.9 billion parcels in China. A further 2.9 billion parcels were delivered between Nov. 11 – 16. 
• Alibaba’s logistics arm used more than 3000 charter flights and cargo ships to bring goods into China for this event last year.
  

The big 11/11 sale for 2021 is yet to kick off, but here’s what we know about the event so far. 

Singles Day 2021 – What to Expect?

This year’s Double 11 shopping event is expected to be Alibaba’s largest to date, with over 290,000 participating brands and more than 14 million discount deals available to the consumers. The mega sale event is expected to cater to over 900 million consumers.

There were some important changes made to the Double eleven sales event this year. 

1. The Double 11 sale event was held in two phases.
2. The first phase will start from November 1 to 3 (pre-sale starts from October 20), and the second will be on November 11, which is the day of the main event.
3. Another key change this year was the timing of the sale. Unlike previous years, wherein the pre-sales started at 0:00 AM, this year, retailers kicked off both the stages of pre-sale at 8 PM. So shoppers no longer had to stay up late to snap up their favorite products.
4. Green and eco-friendly products also got more attention this year. 

This year’s Double Eleven is already showing promise of becoming the largest sales event in history. A longer sales window for customers along with a longer list of brands participating in the event should ensure that it turns out to be much bigger than 2020. 

In the past two weeks alone, we’ve seen record-breaking sales figures from different brands. 

• More than 20,000 customers bought green home appliances in the first two hours of sale on Oct. 20, 2021, which reportedly helped save 300 tons of carbon emissions.
• Over US$1.7 billion worth of goods were sold by a celebrity host in just 12 hours of his live-streaming session at the start of the 11/11 sale.
• Shoppers bought iPhones worth 300 million yuan ($47 million) within a second after the sales kicked off on Nov 1. In just four minutes, the total iPhone sales during Singles Day exceeded the iPhone sales generated in an entire day in 2020. 
• Xiaomi sold products worth 7 billion yuan ($1.93 billion) on the first day of the Double Eleven sale. This included over 500,000 units of the Redmi Note 11 series alone. 

Singles Day not only generates massive sales for brands, but also indicates products that are gaining popularity among customers. So the first two weeks in November are among the most important periods for retailers in China. 

How can you participate in Double Eleven?

If you feel you are missing out on the fun, don’t worry as Alibaba’s international retail arm, Aliexpress has its own 11/11 sales event. While it’s not as big as the event in China, you’ll still find plenty of good deals and discount coupons on a wide variety of products this week.

A report by MyDrivers says that the emoji search function in Tmall is currently under ‘heavy-duty public testing’. At present, it supports 400 commonly used emojis.

With more people using the feature during the Double Eleven shopping festival and beyond, the algorithm could get better in the future. Since emojis now play a key role in our day-to-day conversations online, there’s a high chance of success for this feature.

The global chip shortage coincided with the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and had seen several layers of dislocations in the supply chain globally. It however seems that chipmakers are gradually coming over the shortage with a raft of measures across the production chain. This has seen the expansion of existing capacities and outright building of new chip production processes.

Chinese company Phytium is changing its industrial and commercial registration by adding some heavy hitters like Alibaba, Baidu’s Dazi Bairuixiang Venture Capital Management Company, and China Internet Investment Fund as part of its investors. The company’s registered capital has also increased from 667 million yuan ($104 million) to 749 million yuan ($116.8 million). The new investment alignment will help Phytium to focus on its core area of producing homegrown core chips as the global market continues to boom. According to recent reports, the global artificial intelligence chip market could reach a massive $72.6 billion from its current estimate of $11 billion.

Alibaba and Baidu already have some interests in chipmaking, as both companies have subsidiaries that are focused on chip development. The two companies are just part of a large number of internet giants that are pursuing chip development as part of their business model. Baidu has the Kunlun Chip arm, while Alibaba has the T-Head Semiconductor Co., Ltd with the task of pursuing research and development, as well as the strategic layout of chips.

The new partnership in Phytium is expected to drive the expansion and development of chipmaking capacity in the company to meet local demand and even serve the overseas market.

In a move targeted at several popular mobile applications, China’s internet regulatory watchdog, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), has named several companies for being involved in the unauthorized collection and use of personal data of users of these applications. Some of the popular applications mentioned were TikTok, LinkedIn, Kuaishou, Microsoft’s Bing, and Kugou.

In a statement posted on its official WeChat account, the regulator said that it received complaints from users that prompted it to launch an investigation into the data collection activities of several apps. The CAC noted that 105 apps were, after the investigation, found to have violated extant privacy laws by collecting excessive personal information through illegal access. According to the CAC statement, the owners of the 105 apps are required to remedy the observed breaches within 15 days.

The Chinese internet watchdog says it will continue to scrutinize mobile applications for possible breaches regularly. The CAC approach comes on the heels of the recent new regulations that provide stricter monitoring and controls for the public’s overall safety. The crux of the new rules is that app providers are held accountable for collecting excessive user data unrelated to the app’s core services and forcing users to give uninformed consent to how their data are used. These regulations cover a wide range of mobile applications of different hues.

China continues to strengthen its laws and regulations to be responsive to the evolving technological space. Some major brands like Alibaba and Tencent have been fined heavily for observed breaches of the rules governing their operations and anti-monopoly laws. These new moves by the CAC will help shore up consumer confidence in the system and ensure mobile applications do not take undue advantage of users.

Alibaba Group Holdings Ltd, the tech giant in China, has been slapped with a record 18 billion yuan, approximately $2.75 billion, after a probe related to anti-monopoly found that the company abused its dominant market position for years.

The State Administration for Market Regulation in China said that it had determined that Alibaba, which is listed in New York and Hong Kong, had been “abusing market dominance” since 2015 by preventing its merchants from using other online e-commerce platforms.

This practice violates China’s antimonopoly law by hindering the free circulation of goods and infringing on the business interests of merchants, the regulator added. Apart from the highest-ever antitrust penalty globally, the company has been asked to make “thorough rectifications” to strengthen internal compliance and protect consumer rights.

The fine imposed on the Chinese tech giant accounts for about 4 percent of Alibaba’s domestic revenues in 2019, reports Reuters. It comes amid a crackdown on technology conglomerates and indicates China’s antitrust enforcement on internet platforms has entered a new era.

Alibaba came under intense scrutiny in its home country after the company’s billionaire founder Jack Ma’s stinging public criticism of the country’s regulatory system in October last year. A month later, authorities scuttled a planned $37 billion IPO by Ant Group, Alibaba’s internet finance arm, which was set to be the world’s biggest ever.

In December last year, the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) announced its antitrust probe into the company. After this record fine, Ant Group still needs to agree to a regulatory-driven revamp that could significantly cut its valuations and rein in some of its freewheeling businesses.

China has implemented new anti-monopoly rules in the country which aims to restrict the activities of the country’s major tech companies. The new rules are basically a formalized version of the ani-monology draft law published in November last year.

The guidelines are expected to put new pressure on the country’s leading internet services, including e-commerce sites such as Alibaba Group’s Taobao and Tmall marketplaces and JD.com. The law also covers payment services like Ant Group’s Alipay and Tencent Holding’s WeChat Pay.

The rules have been issued by the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) on its website, reports Reuters. It bars companies from a range of behavior, including forcing merchants to choose between top internet players, a long-time practice in the market.

It also prevents firms from forcing merchants to choose between supporting specific services and applications, as well as stopping actions that would fix prices, restrict technologies, and other market manipulation techniques.

Explaining the reason behind implementing these new rules, SAMR said reports of internet-related anti-monopoly behavior had been increasing, and that it was facing challenges regulating the industry. It added, “The behavior is more concealed, the use of data, algorithms, platform rules and so on make it more difficult to discover and determine what are monopoly agreements.”

SAMR has already launched an antitrust investigation into Alibaba Group in December following the suspended $37 billion IPO for payment affiliate Ant Group. Alibaba was warned by regulators against practices such as forcing merchants into exclusive cooperation pacts and agreements that would prevent their use of a competitor’s platforms.

In December last year, Alibaba-backed RoboTaxi company AutoX announced the commencement of test-run exercises for its driverless taxis in China. Just a few days ago, the company also disclosed that it will be running a pilot commercial program for the electric vehicle in Shenzhen, China.

We’ve now gotten our first glimpse of the Robotaxis in action. AutoX has released a new video in English demonstrating how the company’s autonomous robotaxi service works. Shenzhen is the 5th largest city in China and China’s tech hub. Thus, it is just apt that the first test run is carried out here. The video is impressive, showing the AutoX Chrysler Pacifica navigating left turns, going around parked vehicles, overtaking on two-lane roads, and stopping for pedestrians and cyclists. This qualifies the vehicle as Level 4 autonomous. All of this with no driver in the front seat.

The vehicles of AutoX are equipped with the startup’s proprietary vehicle control unit called XCU, which the company claims have faster processing speed and more computational capability to handle complex road scenarios. The video shows the car doesn’t exceed the speed limit of 40km/h. Those riding in the RoboTaxi are also able to speak to a customer support agent to ask any question that they wish to enquire about. The customer care agents will also be able to check the status of the vehicle in real-time to provide any necessary assistance

Since this is a pilot program, interested persons can sign up through the AutoX RoboTaxi registration page to join. Once selected, the pilot users can use the AutoX membership credits as well for the RoboTaxi rides.

China is expected to tighten its anti trust reins around its technology giants, with its heavy fines being just the beginning. This arrives just after regulators also announced a probe into deals with major brands like Alibaba and Tencent.

Earlier this week, China’s market regulator announced that it would be raising its scrutiny on notable transactions, especially ones backed by internet giants. As per a Reuters report, the regulator is also looking into making “an example” of a 3.5 billion US Dollars plan for search engine Sogou Inc to be taken private by shareholder, Tencent Holdings. The information arrives from two sources close to the matter.

A third source added that the regulator is also targeting a bid by private-equity firm MBK Partners to buy China’s top online car rental firm. The source believes that the move arrives to address the concern of competition as MBK already owns the industry’s second car rental brand. The State Administration of Market Regulation (SAMR) is planning a a thorough review of the Sogou Tencent transaction, which could even translate to the deal missing its July 2021 completion deadline.

According to one of the sources, “The deal now faces big uncertainty and there’s a big chance that it may not close as planned.” Notably, Internet search is a sensitive issue in China, with SAMR taking special consideration that Tencent is already one of the market leaders in various online sectors and fields that it operates its business in. As per Jiaming Zhang, a senior associate at law firm Allen & Overy, “all these recent developments seem to suggest that SAMR is ready to open a new chapter for its enforcement actions in the internet sector.”

AutoX, a China-based autonomous vehicle startup which is backed by Alibaba Group, has today confirmed that it has started testing the fully driverless vehicles in China with Pacifica minivans from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV (FCA).

The company will be deploying a fleet of 25 driverless vehicles in Shenzhen and five more in other cities to test the technology. AutoX has modified a number of vehicles from various manufacturers and tested them in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Wuhan, and Wuhu.

Earlier this year, in July, AutoX became the second company to test a passenger vehicle on California’s public roads without a safety driver sitting on the front seat. The first company to do so was Alphabet Inc’s Waymo.

AutoX has said that the company will not have a remote center. It’s competitors, WeRide and Baidu, which are also testing driverless vehicles in China, uses a remote center that can take control of the vehicle if and when needed.

The company is pursuing the so-called level 4 autonomous driving standard. In this, a vehicle can handle all aspects of driving in most possible circumstances without the need for human intervention.

Xiao Jianxiong, Chief Executive Officer of the company had revealed last month that the company is currently in talks with prospective investors to fund fleet expansion and development plans. However, he has not shared more details about this.

Apart from Alibaba, the company is also backed by Dongfeng Motor Group and SAIC Motor Corp. So far, it has raised more than 160 million in five funding rounds, the latest being Series B raised in December last year.

Online sales giant Alibaba and JD.com have both disclosed that the United States of America was the number one seller of goods to China during the last Singles’ Day shopping rendezvous that netted an estimated $116 billion in revenue for the two companies.

Singles’ Day has grown to become the world’s biggest one-day sales event and has overtaken Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the United States in terms of volume and revenues. Many online companies globally, offer mouth-watering deals at the event.

This year, several companies including Alibaba Group Holding Ltd and JD.com Inc offered huge discounts and promotions for several days and had tremendous sales over this short period. Industry watchers are of the opinion that massive sales volume of these Chinese brands are a pointer to the rebounding of the Chinese economy as it starts to pick up from the decline occasioned by COVID-19.

Many customers still unable to travel abroad for their holidays and shopping due to the Coronavirus pandemic, latched on to the great deals put forward by Huawei, Fast Retailing and several others to soothe their demand cravings.

Online brand, Alibaba generated an estimated gross 498.2 billion yuan ($75.28 billion) in gross merchandise volume, while JD.com grossed about 271.5 billion yuan in sales. According to JD.com, the leading products that drove the massive sales volume were Apple iPhones, L’Oreal Lancome toner and 60-inch smart LCD TVs from Sharp Corporation.

Alibaba interspersed its promotions between November 1 and November 11, while JD.com offered deals for an unbroken period from November 1 to November 11. Both companies computed their gross merchandise volume on the basis of promotions from Nov. 1 through Nov. 11.

The successful event was later dampened by news that China was about to come out with anti-monopoly rules for online marketing platforms.

Alibaba’s stock on Wednesday, took a 10% plunge at the Hong Kong Stock Exchange again, coming on the heels of its earlier decline when regulators scuttled the listing of fintech offshoot, Ant Group. The stock was however up 3% around midday Thursday, reflecting a possible comeback at the close.

Alibaba, in a statement it released, stated that other top-selling countries this year included Australia, Germany, Japan and South Korea.
More than 470 companies are estimated to have surpassed 100 million yuan in gross merchandise volume (GMV) this year. Last year, Alibaba only listed Japan and the United States as the biggest sellers.

Alibaba ramped a humongous $38.4 billion in GMV in a single day in 2019 and said 299 brands achieved the 100 million yuan benchmark in GMV, including Nestle and Under Armour Inc.

China’s double 11 sales festival, also known as Singles’ day, is by far the biggest shopping festival globally. The 11-day festival eclipses AMazon’s Prime day and both Black Friday and Cyber Monday in terms of sales. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s edition turned out to be a big hit. According to data released by Xiaomi, it raked in 14.3 billion yuan (~$2.1 billion USD) during the 11 days shopping spree. Compared to 6.1 billion yuan (around 920 million USD) during the same period last year, this year’s revenue represents a whopping 134% increase YoY.

From November 1st to 11th, Xiaomi was able to set a number of new records. Xiaomi’s mobile phones, smart TV and other categories emerged as the top-sellers on multiple platforms such as JD.com, Tmall and Suning. Among them, Xiaomi smart TV brand ranked as number one on the TV category in both JD.com and Suning Tesco both ranked first in sales.

For this year’s Double 11, Xiaomi distributed 1 billion yuan in subsidies across all platforms which includes Xiaomi Mall, Xiaomi Home, Xiaomi Youpin, Tmall, JD.com, Suning and others. The subsidies and discounts cover all major Xiaomi product brands including smart TV, notebooks and AIoT products, covering all major brands under Xiaomi Category.

It is worthy of note that Xiaomi has been the top brand on Tmall’s singles’ day sales for seven consecutive years, that is since 2013.

Alibaba, the originator of the Singles’ Day shopping festival,  posted sales to the tune of a staggering $74 billion USD in its post-COVID-19 Singles’ Day shopping extravaganza, according to a report by Reuters.

Apart from Alibaba, rivals e-commerce firms such as JD.com Inc and Pinduoduo Inc as well as firms such as Douyin – the Chinese version of Beijing ByteDance Technology Co Ltd’s TikTok – also held Singles’ Day events. JD.com, which started promotions on Nov. 1, said it generated 271.5 billion yuan (~$40.9 billion USD) in trade over the same period.
