The troubles began when a package arrived at the author’s home. The following day, their Echo Show mysteriously signed out, rendering their smart home devices useless. Suspecting a potential security breach, they reached out to customer service, only to receive a surprising accusation. An executive claimed that the author’s doorbell had recorded racist remarks from the delivery driver.

The author, armed with multiple cameras recording their property, reviewed the footage and found no evidence of such remarks. Instead, an automated response from their Eufy doorbell had been misheard. Despite presenting this evidence, their Amazon account remained locked, leaving their entire smart home system useless. The author questioned why Amazon chose to disable all services instead of opting for a more reasonable approach, such as sending an email or contacting the account owner. As a result of this experience, the author even thought about severing ties with Amazon Echo devices. It is still unclear if all of this was a misunderstanding or something else.

Days turned into a long weekend of frustration as the author waited for a response from Amazon. Finally, on Wednesday, their account was unlocked without any follow-up communication. The incident should serve as an example for Amazon to reassess their customer service protocols and adopt a more lenient approach in the future.

Amazon Prime already offers some sweet benefits, such as early access to Lightning Deals, free two-day shipping, Prime Video, and even Prime Music for streaming free music. If this wasn’t enough, Amazon is now reportedly planning to offer free cell phone service to Prime members in the US. The tech giant apparently held negotiations with Verizon, T-Mobile, Dish, and AT&T about using their networks for its proposed service.

Amazon apparently in talks with major US carriers

According to Bloomberg, Amazon is negotiating with multiple US-based carriers to offer cheap (around $10/month) or even free phone service to Prime customers. The company is reported to be in talks with the three major US carriers— Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. The report states that the negotiations have been going on for the last six to eight weeks and Amazon is yet to make any solid decision. This might suggest the plan could be scrapped if the negotiations don’t go as planned.

Even if everything goes right, it’ll likely be a while before this potential offering comes to the market, says Bloomberg. Details about this free cellular service are limited and we are not sure if it will be the same as what Verizon and other carriers offer in the US. The new perk, if becomes a reality, could motivate a lot of customers to stick to Prime.

Amazon is yet to make any official announcement, in fact, the company has denied any plans of developing a cellular service (Via XDA). Further, a Verizon spokesperson told TechCrunch that the company is “not in negotiation with Amazon regarding the resale of the nation’s best and most reliable wireless network. Our company is always open to new and potential opportunities, but we have nothing to report at this time.”

Amazon is testing a new subscription service called Prime Lite for users in India. The service is currently only available to select Prime members in the country as a Beta version, with an introductory price of Rs. 999 per year.

Prime Lite provides nearly identical benefits and services to Amazon Prime, with a few key differences. One significant difference is that the new Prime Lite membership does not include access to Amazon Prime Music. Furthermore, Prime Lite users are not eligible for no-cost EMI, free ebooks, or Prime Gaming.

In terms of delivery, Prime Lite offers Two-Day delivery on products, as opposed to Amazon Prime’s Same-Day or One-Day delivery. Prime Lite users can access unlimited content on Prime Video, but it will not be in HD format and will contain advertisements. The content can be streamed simultaneously on two devices, one of which must be a mobile phone.

It’s worth noting that Amazon raised the annual subscription price of Prime in India from Rs. 999 to Rs. 1,499 in December 2021. The new Prime Lite subscription offer is available at the previous price of Rs. 999 and is a more affordable option for users who do not require all of the benefits of Amazon Prime.

Amazon’s Prime Lite service is currently in beta testing and is only available to a limited number of users in India. The company has not stated when or if the service will be available to all users throughout the country.

Subscribing to Netflix India will now cost you a bit less as the streaming service looks to expand its user base amid rising competition from rivals Hotstar and Amazon Prime – both of which are priced a tad lower.

Most of the plans have gotten a price cut of Rs 50 per month but the basic plan now costs Rs 199 per month instead of Rs 499 per month, which is a huge price cut of Rs 200. As for others, the popular plan has been reduced to Rs 149/month from Rs 199/month, the standard plan has been reduced to Rs 499/month from Rs 649/month, and finally, the premium plan stands at Rs 649/month, down from Rs 799/month.

The new plans have been dubbed as ‘Happy New Prices’ by Netflix India will be effective from December 14th, or today.

However, competitors like Amazon Prime and Disney+Hotstar continue to cost a little less in the country. While the former’s monthly plan now starts at Rs 179 per month, the latter’s subscription costs Rs 1499 yearly for premium services.

If you are scratching your head about Amazon Prime’s Rs 179 fee when it earlier cost Rs 129 per month, then you will be surprised to know that the streaming service has gotten a price hike at the same time Netflix has reduced its prices.

An Amazon spokesperson had said, “The price of Prime memberships in IN (India) is being revised from Rs 999 to Rs 1,499 (annual plan), Rs 329 to Rs 459 (3-month plan), and Rs 129 to Rs 179 (monthly plan).”

However, customers were still given a chance to pay the old prices for their Amazon Prime subscription if they extended their plan or joined it on or before December 13th, 11:59 pm. If you weren’t able to avail the limited time offer, then well, you will be subject to the updated rates from now.

Over The Top(OTT) Platform content providers are now coming under the regulation of the Indian Government. From hereon, the government body(Ministry of I&B) will regulate the contents that are streaming on platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hotstar, and more.

In a gazette notification, the country’s Hon’ble President Ram Nath Govind has approved(via Gadgets360) new amendments for it. Accordingly, these changes are for the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules 1961. This will now bring online films, digital news, and current affairs content under the scope of the I&B Ministry headed by Prakash Javadekar.

Currently, the Press Council of India monitors Print Media while the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) regulates News Channels. Additionally, Ads and Films are monitored by the Advertising Standards Council of India(ASCI). And Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) respectively in India. That said, a regulatory procedure for online content has been long overdue.
