The HyperOS 3.3 testing phase may have come to an end, as Xiaomi has just begun a public rollout to select high-end phones, including the Xiaomi 17 series and Xiaomi 15T Pro, upgrading the OS to Android 17.

While it’s technically a major OS upgrade, you should not expect to see visual changes or new features, as we hinted in our past coverage. It lays the groundwork to support advanced features and upgrades coming with HyperOS 4 later this year. According to the changelog shared by Ximitime, HyperOS 3.3 update mainly focuses on improving system stability and adds the June 2026 security patch.

Xiaomi is rolling out the HyperOS 3.3 update to the Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Ultra in the Global and European regions. It’s being distributed as a public release, while the Xiaomi 15T Pro is receiving the update on the global variant via the Mi Pilot testing channel. That means only a limited number of Xiaomi 15T users will be able to upgrade to the latest build before the wider rollout begins.

Even though HyperOS 3.3 doesn’t introduce many new features or visual upgrades, the download size is massive. That’s because the update includes a new OS, Android 17, which is itself a large package, although major changes are expected to be introduced as part of HyperOS 4.

Xiaomi usually rolls out updates in batches, so it can take a few days for the update to appear on your device. To check for available updates, go to Settings > About phone and tap the HyperOS logo. For the Xiaomi 15T Pro users, the update may take a little longer, as it’s currently rolling out via the Mi Pilot channel.

The HyperOS 3.3 rollout has just begun, but Xiaomi is already preparing to release the most anticipated HyperOS 4. That would be a true major upgrade with major visual upgrades, new features, and enhancements across the system. Xiaomi is expected to release HyperOS 4 in August with the upcoming Xiaomi 18 series, and the rollout to older devices could begin in September.

When will Samsung release One UI 9.0?

Samsung will unveil One UI 9.0 at the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event scheduled for July 22, 2026. The new version will debut with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8, which are to be launched at the same event.

The stable rollout for older Galaxy devices will likely begin in September, with recent models like the Galaxy S26, Galaxy Z Fold 7, and Galaxy Z Flip 7 likely to be included in the first phase.

The One UI 9.0 beta program, which was released in early May 2026, is currently limited to the Galaxy S26 series. However, it’s expected to reach more Galaxy devices ahead of the stable rollout.

One UI 9.0 update: New features and upgrades

Samsung has already implemented major design changes in One UI 8.5, and therefore One UI 9.0 may look very similar. That said, the new version still offers many visual tweaks and new features worth looking forward to.

One UI 9.0 features thicker sliders for display brightness and volume that now fill out their full pill shapes for better touch accuracy. The media player widgets on the lock screen and quick panel can be resized and now show energetic waveform animations that match the album art. Some media controls now appear as circular buttons rather than being grouped inside a rounded rectangular container.

While the interface would look majorly unchanged, you can expect more liquid glass UI effects across One UI 9.0.

The new software will also introduce some new Galaxy AI features and refinements to existing features. It will have Creative Studio built directly into the stock app, allowing users to build personalized profile cards without opening a separate app.

The Home Up module in Good Lock has been updated to support multi-finger gestures for assigning custom actions, such as adjusting volume or triggering pop-up windows. One UI 9 also integrates a new “Ask AI” feature inside Samsung Browser to get direct answers from webpages.

I’m sure Samsung has more exciting features and upgrades in the pipeline, which should be announced at the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event later this month.

In addition to One UI 9 features, the next major upgrade will also bundle many Android 17 features. This includes the bubble support for all apps, meaning users can open any app in a floating bubble, which was previously restricted to messaging apps.

Google has also added a system-level contacts picker, allowing users to give apps access to specific contacts rather than the entire phonebook. Android 17 also improves app adaptability across different screen sizes by preventing developers from locking apps to a specific orientation.

Last week, we reported that Xiaomi is developing a new HyperOS 3.3 build, based on Android 17, for select high-end smartphones. Well, it now appears that the beta release could be around the corner, giving users an early taste of Android 17 weeks ahead of the much-anticipated HyperOS 4 release.

While Xiaomi has yet to confirm the existence of a HyperOS 3.3 build, relevant firmware versions have been spotted in multiple regions, suggesting a beta release may go live as soon as next week.

Even though we’re not expecting new features, visual changes, or major upgrades with HyperOS 3.3, it’s likely to offer performance and stability improvements, along with other system-level changes. More importantly, it lays the important groundwork to support advanced features and upgrades coming with HyperOS 4 later this year.

According to recent leaks, Xiaomi may launch HyperOS 4 in China as early as next month, with the global announcement likely to follow in September. The new software skin is expected to debut with the upcoming Xiaomi 18 series around October, and the rollout to older devices could begin the same month.

Now that Google has shipped the stable Android 17 to eligible Pixel devices, other Android brands won’t take long to start rolling it out to their devices. For Vivo phones, the Android 17 update will come with a new OriginOS 7 custom skin, offering additional features, visual refinements, and upgrades.

Unfortunately, many Vivo phones will miss out on this major upgrade. This includes many premium phones from the Vivo X series, iQOO’s flagship lineup, as well as a lot of mid-range phones from the V series, T series, Y series, and iQOO’s Z series.

We’ve prepared the list based on the current software update policy, and therefore, it should be mostly accurate. That means if your device is on the list, it is unlikely to receive the Android 17 update.

There are still many Vivo and iQOO phones without an update policy. It’s difficult to predict if they will be upgraded to the new OS. So, there could be more devices that won’t receive the update.

Vivo is expected to launch OriginOS 7 globally in October, with the stable rollout likely to begin in November. This major build is expected to feature deeper AI integration, enhanced user customization, new features, and a bunch of under-the-hood changes to improve the performance and software stability. So, there’s a lot to look forward to.

If your device isn’t eligible for OriginOS 7, it’s worth upgrading to new hardware. You can upgrade to newer models like the Vivo X300 or iQOO 15 that promise up to 5 major Android OS updates.

Xiaomi was expected to release Android 17 soon, with a new HyperOS 4 custom skin on top, but now it seems the company may have different plans. Leaked internal firmware files for Xiaomi’s latest flagship phones suggest the company may be developing HyperOS 3.3 based on Android 17.

The Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Ultra have been spotted (via Ximitime) with an unreleased HyperOS 3.3 firmware version, based on Android 17. While these are internal engineering builds and not intended for public release, they suggest Xiaomi may be testing them behind the scenes for a wider release later this year.

Interestingly, these builds have no mention of HyperOS 4, which was expected to be released with Android 17. However, since the new firmware is still under internal testing, I’d wait for more concrete details before reaching a conclusion.

That wait isn’t going to be much longer, as the next major HyperOS version, based on Android 17, has been officially confirmed for release in July or August. Ahead of the release, we can expect official teasers that should reveal whether it’s HyperOS 3.3 or HyperOS 4.0 coming to your phone.

Regardless of the HyperOS versions, we expect to see major upgrades to personal intelligence, new UI elements, deeper liquid glass UI integration, and plenty of under-the-hood improvements to make the system faster and more responsive. So, there’s a lot to look forward to with the upcoming HyperOS update.

While the One UI 9.0 public beta is limited to the Galaxy S26 series, Samsung’s One UI team is doing a lot of hard work behind the scenes to ensure a timely release for other Galaxy devices. Internal testing has been underway for weeks, mainly for high-end and mid-range smartphones, but recently, a batch of budget phones has been spotted on the test server.

Many budget phones, including the Galaxy A07, Galaxy A17, and Galaxy A16, have been spotted on the server with a One UI 9.0 test firmware. This doesn’t necessarily mean a quicker release for these devices. Early testing gives the brand additional time to build and test the software to deliver a timely release without critical bugs.

Where the One UI 9.0 rollout stands

Samsung’s beta program is in its final stretch. One UI 9.0 Beta 4 is now rolling out to the Galaxy S26 series with the July 2026 security patch, and testing has quietly expanded to more than two dozen devices, including budget models like the Galaxy A07, A17, and A16 5G. Early testing doesn’t mean an early release for those phones, but it does suggest Samsung wants a faster, less buggy rollout than last year.

After the Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8 launch with One UI 9.0 on board, expect the stable update to reach the Galaxy S25 series first, then the S24 and S23 generations through late 2026. Worth knowing if you’re holding a Galaxy S23: One UI 9.0 is expected to be the final major Android upgrade that generation receives.

What if your Galaxy ended support at One UI 7 or One UI 8?

If you landed here looking for an older update list: devices from the 2021 generation, the Galaxy S21, S21+, S21 Ultra, and the Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3, received their final major upgrade with One UI 7 (Android 15). The 2022 generation listed above (Galaxy S22 series, S21 FE, Z Fold 4, Z Flip 4, Tab S8 series) ends the road at One UI 8.x.

All of these phones will keep getting security patches for a while, but no new Android versions. If yours is on either list, it’s a good time to start thinking about an upgrade — every Galaxy launched since the S24 gets seven years of OS updates, so your next phone will age far better than your current one.

And if your phone is on the ineligible list above, it may still have one update left in it, check whether it’s in line for Samsung’s One UI 8.5 update.

To keep the list short and relevant, we only included devices that received the One UI 8.0 update but won’t receive One UI 9.0. That’s why you don’t see the Galaxy S21 on the list.

If your Samsung device is on the list, it’s unlikely to receive the Android 17 update. The device may still receive security updates for a while, but it’s best to upgrade to a newer model to keep receiving the newest features and upgrades.

Google just dropped Android 17 in mid-June 2026, and it started rolling out to Pixel phones with all sorts of promises: better performance, new AI features, and smoother everything. For a lot of people, though, the excitement didn’t last long. Pretty quickly, users started flooding Reddit, X, and the usual forums with complaints about two big headaches: wonky touchscreens and flaky 5G connections.

The touchscreen issue

Some folks say their phones just stop responding to taps and swipes for random stretches. Others are dealing with something even stranger called “gesture inversion,” where swiping up scrolls the screen down, and vice versa. It’s bizarre, and it only started after the Android 17 update.

It’s hitting a wide range of Pixels, especially the new Pixel 10 series, along with the 9, 8, and 7 models. Pixel 6 users seem less affected so far, but it’s still early. The good news? It doesn’t look like a specific hardware problem, which suggests it’s a software glitch from the update itself.

A few people have found temporary relief by turning “Smooth Display” (the variable refresh rate setting) off and back on, but it’s not a guaranteed fix. Google has a solid history of squashing these kinds of Pixel bugs pretty fast through monthly updates, so there’s hope a proper patch is already in the works. That said, as of writing, Google has acknowledged the issue but hasn’t released a fix yet.

5G and WiFi connectivity problems

On top of that, plenty of users (particularly on Pixel 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 8 Pro, 8a, and even some 6a models) lost their 5G completely after updating. The phones drop down to LTE or lose signal altogether. Some are also seeing missing eSIM profiles after restarts and Wi-Fi networks that refuse to reconnect automatically. Several core Google apps (including the Google app, YouTube, Gmail, Play Store, Google Keep, and Google Photos) are also failing to load or function properly on Wi-Fi.

The Pixel community moderators have a decent workaround for now: Go to Settings > System > Reset options > Reset mobile network settings. It wipes your Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mobile data configs (but not your apps or personal stuff), so you’ll have to set everything up again. A lot of people say this brings their 5G back.

If you’re running into these problems, the best thing you can do is report them through the feedback tool built directly into the system settings or in the official Pixel community forums. The more reports Google gets, the faster they usually move.

When is HyperOS 4 coming?

Xiaomi has officially confirmed HyperOS 4 will be unveiled in July or August 2026, starting with China; the global announcement typically follows a few weeks later. Leaks point to the Xiaomi 17 series and Redmi K90 series forming the first beta batch, with the stable rollout expected to reach older devices around October 2026. Xiaomi HyperOS 4 release date

While an exact release date hasn’t been announced, Xiaomi has officially confirmed that the HyperOS 4 will be unveiled in July or August. This likely refers to the China launch, while the global announcement may follow after a few weeks.

Last year, Xiaomi unveiled HyperOS 3 in China in August, followed by a global launch in September. It will likely follow the same timeline this year for HyperOS 4, so we can expect the global rollout to begin in October 2026.

Meanwhile, the groundwork has already started: on July 15, Xiaomi began rolling out HyperOS 3.3, an interim update that moves current flagships like the Xiaomi 17 series to Android 17 ahead of HyperOS 4’s arrival. Don’t expect new features from it, the visual overhaul and headline additions are reserved for HyperOS 4 itself.

As for which phone debuts the new software, it may not be the Xiaomi 18 series first:- Xiaomi’s upcoming foldable, tipped to run HyperOS 4 out of the box, could beat it to launch.

What to expect from HyperOS 4?

While the official launch is still a few weeks away, several leaks have surfaced online, revealing what’s to come. They suggest Xiaomi is focusing heavily on a “Zero-Legacy” framework built on Android 17. Under this framework, Xiaomi is aggressively purging old legacy code and SDKs to reduce system bloat.

Xiaomi is reportedly rewriting core system applications and frameworks using Rust and Flutter to improve memory safety, background optimization, and cross-device UI consistency. This will also help the software achieve lower RAM usage, faster boot times, and reduced animation stutters.

The company offered a glimpse of its liquid-glass design in HyperOS 3, which is expected to be integrated more deeply into HyperOS 4, featuring fluid aesthetics, glossy overlays, frosted-glass transparency, and advanced bounce animations. A leak suggests Xiaomi could extend the partnership with Leica to introduce the Leica-inspired color palette in HyperOS 4.

Several leakers say Xiaomi could integrate a privacy screen feature that narrows the viewing angle, similar to how Privacy Display works on the Galaxy S26. The difference is that Samsung’s implementation uses hardware, while Xiaomi is reportedly trying to achieve the same via software. It will be exciting to compare both.

Furthermore, HyperOS 4 is expected to feature smarter cross-device multitasking, highly optimized background task management, and deeper contextual AI productivity features for daily workflows.

In addition to these features and many more we still don’t know about, the next major upgrade for Xiaomi devices will include many features and upgrades from the development team at Google. This appears to be an exciting update package, and like you, we can’t wait to test it out.

More recent leaks put numbers on the overhaul: early test figures suggest HyperOS 4 could improve overall system smoothness by around 40 percent, increase background app retention by 35 percent, and cut idle memory use by a quarter. The Liquid Glass design is said to come in two styles, Transparent and Soft and Xiaomi’s on-device AI models, including MiMo and the Miclaw agent, are expected to power offline document summarization, translation and image editing, with cross-device file transfers up to three times faster.

Google has released Android 17 for Pixel devices, and soon other brands will begin rolling out the update. However, there’s a lot of uncertainty among users about whether their devices will receive this major upgrade. Except for Google, no brand has announced the list of eligible devices for the Android 17 upgrade. So, we reviewed the current update policy for every brand to prepare the list. Since it’s based on the update policy, devices on the list are almost confirmed to receive the update.

Google has released Android 17, introducing a collection of new features aimed at making smartphones and large-screen devices more productive, secure and efficient. The update is rolling out first to supported Pixel devices, while other eligible Android smartphones, tablets and foldables are expected to receive it later this year. Alongside user-facing additions, Android 17 also includes several under-the-hood improvements designed to enhance overall system performance.

Android 17: Smarter ways to work and play

A major highlight of Android 17 is its improved multitasking experience. The new Bubbles feature allows users to open apps in compact floating windows that remain accessible while using other applications. This makes it easier to check messages, notes, maps or other information without repeatedly switching between apps. On larger devices such as tablets and foldables, Android 17 adds a dedicated bubble bar that keeps active floating windows organised for quick access.

The update also introduces Screen Reactions, which combines screen recording with selfie camera capture. Users can record their reactions while demonstrating apps, commenting on videos or creating tutorials directly from their device. Foldable smartphones receive additional gaming enhancements through a new gaming mode that splits the display between gameplay and on-screen controls, creating a more immersive experience. Google says memory handling has also been improved to reduce stuttering and maintain smoother gameplay during demanding titles.

Android 17 brings several new privacy controls. Users can now provide apps with temporary access to their precise location and choose specific contacts to share rather than granting access to an entire contact list. The Find Hub service gains an upgraded “Mark as lost” option that can secure a misplaced device using biometric authentication, helping protect sensitive data even if someone knows the device passcode.

The update also strengthens protection against scams and malicious software through enhancements to Live Threat Detection and Advanced Protection. Additional safeguards have been added to PIN authentication by limiting repeated attempts and increasing waiting periods after multiple failures. Google has further introduced app memory limits to prevent excessive RAM usage, which can help improve battery life and overall responsiveness.

Unlike other brands, Google rolls out the update to all eligible devices at the same time. However, availability may vary depending on your region. You can manually check for available software updates by navigating to Settings > System > System Update.

For non-beta users, the update package is a few gigabytes. Beta users are receiving a much smaller package, as most of the changes have already been rolled out to devices via early builds.

Android 17: New features and major upgrades

1. New AI features

With Android 17, Pixel phones receive a bundle of AI features to help them make the most out of their devices. It introduces Lyria 3 for generating original music from a text/image prompt, and Gemini Omni allows users to turn a text prompt into a custom video clip (requires a Gemini Pro subscription).

The Voice Translate feature is now available on the Pixel 10a, while the Manual Call Screen feature is expanding to India. The update also extends Quick Share — AirDrop compatibility to Pixel 9a and Pixel 8a, while the Pixel 10 series gets access to Magic Cue.

2. Bubbles receives its biggest upgrade yet

The Bubbles feature, which has been limited to messaging apps for years, now works with all apps. That means you can now turn any app into a floating bubble and use it alongside other applications. To use this feature, long-press an app icon and choose the Bubble option.

On tablets and foldable devices, there’s a new Bubble Bar in the bottom-right corner that organizes and holds app bubbles.

3. Screen Reactions

With this feature, you can record yourself using the selfie camera while capturing your screen, eliminating the need for a green screen. This feature can be pretty helpful for folks creating tutorials, reaction videos, or gameplay recordings.

4. Foldable gaming mode

This feature splits a fold into a 50/50 layout with the game on top and a dynamic gamepad below. The Foldable gaming mode is enabled in Android 17 and will be available in the coming months.

To further level up your gaming experience, Android 17 supports native controller remapping for external controllers.

5. Continue app state on another device

The Continue On feature has made it to the final release. It allows users to seamlessly transition a task between Android devices. That means you can now open an app on your mobile device and continue working on it on your tablet without losing state.

As Google mentioned, “the user sees a suggestion for the most recently opened app from their mobile in their tablet taskbar.” When tapped, the app launches without losing its state.

6. Security and privacy

Android 17 allows the user to grant an app temporary access to their precise location. There’s also a new “Mark as lost” feature in Find Hub that lets you lock a missing phone behind your biometrics. So, even if a thief knows your passcode, he won’t be able to unlock it.

You can now give apps temporary access to your specific contacts. Those apps won’t be able to track any changes you make to a contact’s information.

If your device is on the list, it’s almost guaranteed to receive the Android 17 update once the rollout begins later this year.

The official list could be longer as Realme hasn’t announced the update policy for every device. So, we only included the devices that we were confident about just to keep the list as accurate as possible.

As for the stable release, no official announcement has been made yet. However, given that Android 17’s timeline is largely similar to last year’s, we can expect Realme UI 8.0 to drop around the same time, in November.

While the stable release is still a few months away, users can apply for the Android 17 beta program to get an early taste of the new features and upgrades. Since its official announcement in late March, the beta program has remained limited to the Realme GT 8 Pro, with no official announcement about its expansion to other devices. Google is expected to release Android 17 this week. Android 17 isn’t just an annual refresh but a pretty significant upgrade with a major focus on Gemini Intelligence. It moves Gemini from a standalone app into a proactive system assistant capable of automating tasks across applications, creating on-the-fly assets, and managing deep user workflows. It allows users to generate widgets, such as custom tracking goals or countdown timers, with the help of Gemini AI.

The new OS finally has a native app lock. Speaking of privacy, Android 17 also introduces limited contact sharing that grants apps one-time or strict temporary access to chosen contacts rather than your entire phonebook. Furthermore, Android 17 allows users to have separate toggles for Wi-Fi and mobile data. The bubble feature expands to all apps, allowing users to run multiple floating apps without leaving the full-screen app.

Android 17 will be a significant upgrade, especially for newer models like the Pixel 9 and Pixel 10, which are confirmed to receive major AI upgrades. Even for older Pixels, there are plenty of improvements and some exciting features to look forward to. But when will Google release Android 17? We may have an answer to that.

The short answer: Google may release Android 17 today or any time this week.

Google switched to a dual-release schedule last year with Android 16 instead of pushing out a single major update a year. As per the new strategy, Google will push a major release around Q2, followed by a minor release later in the year.

Android 17 also follows the new release strategy, so its major release is expected around the same time as last year, in June. Surprisingly, Google didn’t release any Developer Preview builds and moved directly to the public beta.

The first Android 17 beta was released on February 13, followed by the second beta later that month. While these initial builds arrived later than those of Android 16, the gap narrowed with upcoming builds. The new OS reached platform stability with Beta 3 on March 27, two weeks later compared to Android 16.

Beta 4 landed on April 17, followed by a minor Beta 4.1 release on June 1, which should be the final beta. The next build will likely be stable and may be released at any time now. Google usually releases a new Android OS on Tuesday, which is today (Jun 9). If not today, the update will most likely be released any day this week.

Which devices get HyperOS 4?

It’s important to note that Xiaomi has released a new HyperOS software update with a year-old Android OS in the past. A case in point is HyperOS 3.0, which was released to some devices running on Android 15.

So, even if your device isn’t eligible for Android 17, there’s still a chance that it may receive the latest HyperOS 4 update. However, that build will likely have some missing features.

As for the HyperOS 4 release, Xiaomi has officially confirmed the unveil will happen in July or August, and leaks point to the Xiaomi 17 series and Redmi K90 series forming the first beta batch. In the meantime, Android 17 has already begun reaching eligible devices: Xiaomi started rolling out the interim HyperOS 3.3 update on July 15, beginning with the Xiaomi 17 series. When will OnePlus release the OxygenOS 17 update?

OnePlus’ progress on Android 17 so far closely matches last year’s timeline. It skipped the first beta and directly released Beta 2 in April, followed by another beta in May.

These early Android “Developer Preview” builds do not include a new version of OxygenOS until around October. That’s when the software is almost ready for a public release with a new OxygenOS skin.

Since the stable Android 17 is dropping almost the same time as last year, in June, OnePlus may also follow a similar rollout pattern. That means the OxygenOS 17 beta program could begin in October, and the stable rollout may go live in early November.

The stable rollout is still months away, but we already have a solid idea about the new features and upgrades coming with the next major upgrade, as discussed below.

What to expect from the OxygenOS 17 update?

OnePlus hasn’t revealed any details about the changes coming to OxygenOS 17, but early leaks suggest a major upgrade to the user experience. According to a leak posted on a Telegram channel, the new version will offer significantly smoother zooming for both photos and videos.

The same leak also says OxygenOS 17 significantly reduces lag, flickering, and UI frame drops, and offers improved scrolling and smoothness. The power efficiency for small tasks is said to have been optimized. OxygenOS 17 could also optimize CPU usage, background app retention, app launch speed, and overall battery usage.

Besides these under-the-hood upgrades, we also expect new features, visual enhancements, and improved AI capabilities in OxygenOS 17. We’ll have more details on them once the open beta is released.

In addition to the OxygenOS 17 upgrades, the final update will also include new features and changes from Android 17, developed by Google. Motorola is actively expanding the Android 17 beta program to allow more of its users access to the upcoming features and upgrades. The list already includes over a dozen devices, and it has just gotten a little longer as the beta program now goes live for the Razr 70 Ultra and Razr Fold.

This is the second time Motorola has announced the Android 17 beta program for the Razr 70 Ultra. It initially happened earlier last month, but the official post on the community forum was quickly taken down because the device had not been launched then. The original Razr Fold, announced earlier this year, has also joined the beta program.

Anyone who regularly moves between an Android phone and tablet probably knows the feeling: you open something on one device, pick up the other a few minutes later, and suddenly have to search for the same tab, document, or app all over again. Google wants to make that process much smoother with a new Android 17 feature called “Continue On,” announced during Google I/O 2026.

The feature is essentially Android’s answer to Apple’s Handoff system. It allows users to start something on one Android device and continue it on another without losing progress or context along the way.

For example, if you are editing a document in Google Docs on your phone, your tablet can surface a shortcut suggesting you continue the same session there. Tap it, and the document opens in the exact same state, including scroll position and ongoing edits.

The same idea works for web browsing as well. Chrome pages can move across devices, and Google is also introducing fallback web support for apps that may not exist on the receiving device. So if an app is unavailable on the tablet, Android can instead continue the task inside a browser window.

Google says the system is designed around the idea of “continuing the user journey” between Android devices signed into the same Google account.

At launch, the feature mainly focuses on phone-to-tablet transitions, though the framework itself appears broader. Google is giving developers dedicated APIs so apps can support handoffs more cleanly, and there is already speculation that ChromeOS devices could eventually join the experience too.

To be fair, Samsung users already have access to some similar continuity features through One UI. Samsung Notes, Samsung Internet, clipboard syncing, and Galaxy Book integration have made the Galaxy ecosystem feel fairly connected for a while now. But Google’s approach seems more ambitious because it aims to bring that continuity to third-party apps across Android more generally.

And honestly, this has been one of Android’s bigger weak points for years. The ecosystem has always offered flexibility and hardware variety, but moving between devices rarely felt as seamless as it does on Apple hardware.

Continue On may not sound revolutionary on paper, but features like this tend to become surprisingly useful once they are integrated properly into daily workflows. If developers adopt it widely, switching between Android devices could start feeling much less fragmented than it does today.

The feature is expected to arrive alongside Android 17 later in 2026, with testing beginning through release candidate builds first.

It’s important to note that Vivo hasn’t confirmed which devices will be upgraded to Android 17. So, we had to fetch the update policy for each device to prepare the list, and therefore, we can confidently say that the devices on the list are guaranteed to receive the update once the rollout begins.

It doesn’t take long to notice that there are no Vivo Y-series models on the list. We didn’t include them because the brand hasn’t announced an update policy for most Y-series devices, including recent models. So, while they are missing from our list, many recent models should be eligible for the upgrade.

We’ll update the list once the official announcement is made.

According to the official timeline, Google will release the stable version of Android 17 around June 2026. That’s when Pixel devices receive the update, but third-party brands, including Vivo, take additional time to develop and refine their custom skin, such as OriginOS, to work with the latest Android version.

So, even if Google announces the stable Android 17 release in June, Vivo and iQOO users will need to wait a few more months before they start to receive the update with a new version of Vivo’s custom skin. If past releases are any indication, we’re expecting the rollout to begin around September.

Samsung’s One UI 8.5 rollout is all but wrapped up, and attention has fully shifted to the bigger release: One UI 9, based on Android 17. The beta program on the Galaxy S26 series has already reached its fourth build, and Samsung is internally testing the update on more than two dozen devices, including budget models like the Galaxy A07, A17, and A16 5G, all of which appear on the list below.

As the One UI 9 beta kicks off, the big question is: will your Galaxy device receive the next major upgrade?

The short answer: As of July 2026, Samsung’s One UI 9 (Android 17) is confirmed or expected for the Galaxy S23 series and newer, foldables from the Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 onward, and most Galaxy A, M, and F-series models from 2024 or later. The rollout begins July 22 with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8, with older devices following in stages through late 2026.

It’s important to note that Samsung hasn’t officially announced the list yet. However, we already know which Galaxy devices will receive the update, thanks to Samsung’s clear-cut software update policy. Based on this, we’ve prepared a comprehensive list that shouldn’t differ from the official one when announced.

One UI 9.0 will debut pre-installed on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8 at Samsung’s Unpacked event on July 22. From there, expect a staged rollout: the Galaxy S25 series should be first in line around August, followed by the S24 generation in September, with the S23 series and older mid-rangers closing out the year. If you’re on a Galaxy S23, note that One UI 9 is expected to be that generation’s final major Android upgrade.

If your Galaxy is a 2022 model or older, check the other side of this list first — these are the Samsung devices that won’t receive One UI 9.0.

Motorola was quick to launch its Android 17 beta program, announcing it just days after Google released the first beta for Pixel devices in February 2026. And to everyone’s surprise, the brand kept expanding the beta program to more and more devices, now available for over a dozen smartphones. However, on the other hand, the company is struggling with the Android 16 rollout, as the update hasn’t reached all eligible devices.

Motorola is struggling to wrap up Android 16 rollout

The company began rolling out a stable Android 16 update to its devices in September 2025, ahead of many of its competitors, including OnePlus, Oppo, and Vivo. The Edge 60 Pro and Edge 50 Fusion were among the first phones to receive the Android 16 update. However, Motorola struggled to deliver timely releases to other eligible devices.

Premium devices like the Razr 2025 and Razr Ultra 2025 weren’t lucky either. They started receiving the Android 16 update towards the end of February 2026. The situation only worsens as you move towards cheaper phones. Making matter worse, there’s no official announcement regarding the eligibility of devices or the rollout schedule for Android 16.

Just as we’re getting close to the Android 17 release, Motorola has started rolling out last year’s update to its entry-level phones, including the Moto G35. Since the company is aggressively working on the Android 17 beta program, we hope it will look to complete the Android 16 rollout as soon as possible.

Motorola looks more promising this year

Motorola has been struggling with software releases over the past couple of years. However, if you’ve been tracking recent rollouts and announcements, it’s clear that the company is working to improve the software commitments and rollouts.

The recent major upgrades, though not timely, have shown signs of improvement. The software support period has also been upgraded significantly in recent months.

Motorola’s mid-range and high-end phones were typically limited to three OS upgrades, now promising up to five. It took a big leap forward earlier this year with the release of Motorola Signature, which promises seven generations of major OS upgrades. That’s the best you can get on an Android device.

In February, Motorola surprised with the Android 17 beta announcement just days after Google announced the Android 17 Beta 1, while other brands took over a month. Even more surprising is that the beta program now covers over a dozen Motorola devices, while other non-Google brands have offered it for very few of their phones.

Motorola seems to be taking its software game seriously, and I hope to see quicker update rollouts this year. Also, it would be very welcoming to hear an official rollout schedule for the upcoming OS releases, providing more clarity on when users can expect the updates to land on their phones.

Google has already released four betas of Android 17, which are more than enough to show us what the upcoming version has in store. There are some new, exciting features, as well as many essential upgrades to existing ones, that make the software more useful and feature-rich.

With the stable Android 17 release approaching, here are the eight features or upgrades I can’t wait to try.

1. A native app lock, finally

Google is finally bringing the ability to lock individual apps, a feature users have been requesting for years. You will be able to lock apps directly from the home screen by long-pressing an app icon and choosing the “App lock” option from the quick options menu.

You can set up app lock using a PIN, pattern, password, or biometrics like fingerprint or face unlock, without needing a third-party app. This feature on the Google Pixel works just like any other app lock, but keep in mind that notifications for a locked app, along with all associated shortcuts and widgets, will be hidden.

Google notes that certain AI features, such as Gemini’s screen automation, may still be able to interact with apps, depending on permissions. You’ll be notified if other apps have access to the app you’re locking.

Most Android skins, including One UI, already have this feature, but it’s a nice welcome addition for Google Pixels.

2. Floating app bubbles make multitasking easier

The bubble feature has been around for quite a few years now, but it was restricted to messaging and conversations. Android 17 takes it a major step forward by allowing users to turn any app into a floating bubble.

For example, if you’re watching a tutorial on YouTube and noting important steps on Google Keep, you’ll be able to convert Google Keep into a floating bubble for quicker access. When you tap the Keep bubble, the app will open in a small floating window, while the YouTube tutorial plays in full screen. This is better than switching between the two apps and using them in a split-screen view.

You will be able to close an app bubble by dragging it to the bottom of the screen.

Bubbles are more useful on large-screen devices like foldables or tablets where the user has more screen to work with than on a regular smartphone.

3. A more powerful screen recording with a preview screen

Android 17 will upgrade the screen recording experience with a more refined UI and a new preview screen. Currently, when you tap the screen recording tile in Quick Settings, a pop-up shows up asking about the recording area and audio options.

In Android 17, when you tap the screen recording tile, a new floating pill interface will show up, letting you choose what to record, whether to record device audio or microphone (or both), and whether to show touches. You can tap the status indicator in the status bar to bring back the floating pill UI.

Once you stop the recording, you’ll see a new preview screen where you can play, edit, delete, or share the clip instantly without opening the gallery.

4. Mandatory Large-Screen Adaptivity

Google enforces a stricter policy on app resizability and orientation, preventing developers from restricting apps to a single orientation on large devices (sw ≥ 600dp). This effectively skips smartphones (generally below 600dp) and targets tablets and larger-screen devices.

The latest move is designed to make Android apps truly adaptive. On a device running Android 16 or an earlier build, if you open a portrait-locked app on a landscape tablet, the app appears as a tall, narrow window in the center of the screen, with thick black bars on the sides. In Android 17, the app would rotate to fill the gap, resulting in a more usable screen and better app experience.

Games are exempted from these strict mandates to ensure they don’t break during critical gameplay.

Google began phasing out apps’ ability to restrict screen orientation and resizability on large-screen devices with Android 16. However, it still allowed app developers to opt out of this change. But Android 17 makes it mandatory, and developers will no longer be able to opt out.

5. Hide app names on the home screen

In the Beta 3 build, Google introduced a feature that lets users hide the app labels on the home screen. This isn’t a big step, but it helps users create a cleaner home screen setup.

To hide app labels, you’ll need to go to Wallpaper & style, tap Home screen, select Icons, tap the Names tab at the bottom, and turn off the toggle for Show app names. Keep in mind that this won’t affect the app drawer or apps inside folders.

6. Separate Wi-Fi and mobile data toggles

On Pixel devices running Android 16 or earlier, if you need to switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or turn them on or off, you must open Quick Settings, tap the Internet tile, and then perform the action.

Many users have expressed their frustration with the extra step required to access Wi-Fi or mobile data. After nearly four and a half years, Google is finally allowing users to add separate Wi-Fi and mobile data toggles in Android 17.

This change would particularly benefit Pixel users, as most other Android skins, including Samsung’s One UI and OnePlus’s OxygenOS, already have it.

7. Give apps limited access to your contacts

Right now, there’s no way to give apps access to specific contacts. If you grant the contacts permission, the app will have access to all contacts stored on your device.

This is certainly not a privacy-focused approach, and therefore, Google is introducing a new system-level Contact Picker interface that will allow users to select one or more contacts to share with an app at a time. Google says apps won’t be able to track any changes you make to a contact’s information.

Contact Picker grants temporary, session-based read access to the specific data fields selected by the user. That means the app will need to request permissions again after the session timeout, further strengthening users’ privacy.

8. Seamless task continuity on another device

Google is working on a “Task Continuity” feature, which will allow users to sync notifications, share files, and continue apps across their linked Android devices. Essentially, you will be able to transfer an app’s current state from one Android device to another. This feature could debut with Android 17.

This feature will show a suggestion on the taskbar representing the running app from another device. When you click this suggestion, the system initiates the handoff and passes the remote app’s state, as Android Authority explains.

Google announced the new Handoff API in Android 17 Beta 2, which allows developers to specify the application state to resume on another device. Once enabled, the Android system displays a handoff suggestion in the launcher of the user’s nearby devices.

Final build may not include all of them

If you’ve been following Android releases, you’d know that Google doesn’t include all the features from the beta builds into the final package. But there’s a very good chance some of them will make it to the final release.

All the features we’ve discussed so far are available in the Android 17 beta releases. You can get an eligible Google Pixel to test them or wait for the stable release, which could happen around June 2026.

OnePlus has already begun developing its next major software upgrade, OxygenOS 17, which will be based on Android 17. The update will be rolled out to over a dozen eligible devices later this year (check the full list here), but for a few of them, this will be the last major upgrade.

• Launched OS: Android 14
• Software support: up to 3 major OS upgrades
• Last OS update: Android 17

The OnePlus 12R launched in January 2024 with Android 14 pre-installed. The company promises three major upgrades for the device, and as a result, it will receive Android 17 as its final OS update.

3. OnePlus 11

• Launched OS: Android 13
• Software support: up to 4 major OS upgrades
• Last OS update: Android 17

The OnePlus 11 guarantees four major OS upgrades. Since it was launched with Android 13, the upcoming Android 17 upgrade would be the final one.

4. OnePlus Pad 2

• Launched OS: Android 14
• Software support: up to 3 major OS upgrades
• Last OS update: Android 17

The OnePlus Pad 2 also joins the list as it was launched with Android 14 and guarantees only three major OS upgrades, which end with Android 17.

These four OnePlus devices will receive their last major OS upgrade, Android 17, later this year or early next year. After that, they would become ineligible for major upgrades, although the devices will continue to receive security updates for a while.

The Motorola Razr+ 2025, Razr+ 2024 (also known as Razr 50 Ultra in several markets), and the Edge 50 Ultra are the three latest Motorola devices participating in the Android 17 beta program, as announced on the official forum. Many Vivo phones lack a clear software update policy. For these devices, it’s hard to know if they will be upgraded to Android 17. So, to keep the list as accurate as possible, we didn’t include devices we weren’t confident about, but they might still have a chance. Vivo finally joins its Chinese rivals, Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme, to offer its users early access to Android 17 via the Developer Preview program. This preview program build is based on Android 17 Beta 2 and is currently limited to the newest flagships, Vivo X300 Pro and iQOO 15.

The company has already begun accepting applications for its Android 17 Developer Preview program, although it’s currently live in mainland China. We can expect its expansion to other regions in the coming days and weeks. We’ll keep you posted in the Vivo section.

If you have an eligible device and live in a supported region, you can sign up for Android 17 Developer Preview and get early access to the latest features and upgrades. Keep in mind that these early builds are intended for developers and advanced users. Below is a list of issues in the current beta build shared by Vivo.

Before you upgrade to Android 17 beta, note that you can’t go back to the preview stable build without doing a full factory reset. Make sure to back up important data. Also, ensure that your phone has at least 5GB of free storage and is charged to at least 40% before installing the beta build.

How to install Android 17 beta on Vivo and iQOO phones?

Back up your important data by navigating to Settings > Additional settings > Back Up and Reset > Backup & Restore and choosing what to back up. Once done, download the required firmware file from the official website.

Now, follow these steps:

1. Connect your Vivo phone to a computer via a USB cable.
2. Switch the phone’s USB settings to file transfer mode.
3. Copy the downloaded software firmware to the phone’s internal storage. (if it isn’t already there)
4. On your phone, go to Settings > System Management and Upgrade > System Upgrade > Upgrade Settings > Local Upgrade
5. Choose the downloaded firmware file and start the upgrade.
6. Once the upgrade is complete, tap Restart.

If you encounter any problems with the beta build, submit your feedback through the Feedback application. This will help the brand in addressing those bugs. You can also downgrade to the stable Android 16 build. Check the Vivo developer site for the required package and steps.

Android 16 rollout hasn’t been quick from Motorola (it’s still rolling out), but the Android 17 beta expansion from the brand is turning heads. The company has already announced the Android 17 beta program for many devices, and now a fresh set of devices has joined the party.

Motorola was the first third-party manufacturer to announce the Android 17 beta program for its devices, just a week after Google released the first Android 17 beta. The beta program has largely remained limited to mid-range Motorola phones, but the latest batch also includes some high-end models, such as the Razr 60 Ultra and Motorola Signature.

Keep in mind that beta builds are only rolled out to a few devices, which typically include the latest flagship phones. So, if your device is not on the list above, it may still receive the stable Android 17 update, depending on its eligibility.

So far, Google has released two Android 17 betas. The first beta was released on February 13, and the second beta arrived on February 26. And now, it appears the third beta could drop anytime soon. Google will continue to release beta builds to further refine the software until it reaches a stable state for a wider rollout.

According to the official timeline, Google may release the stable Android 17 in June 2026, while other brands would require additional time to fine-tune their skin based on the latest Android OS and add new features. Those third-party brands would likely begin rolling out a stable Android 17 update in Q3 2026.

OPPO Find X9 Pro users can now install Android 17 Beta 2, with OPPO releasing the latest developer build based on Google’s Android 17 Beta 2 along with the latest Google Mobile Services package.

This release is limited to the Find X9 Pro. No other OPPO devices are supported at this stage.

OPPO says this build is meant for developers and advanced users. It is not a stable version and is not recommended for daily use. Users who are not familiar with flashing ROMs or handling beta software are advised to wait for the stable update.

Installing Android 17 Beta 2 will erase all data on the device. This includes apps, photos, music, and documents. OPPO requires users to back up everything before starting the process. The backup can be done through Settings, under Additional settings, then Back up and migrate, followed by Local backup. The backup file is saved in the device storage under the ColorOS backup folder. Users must copy this backup to another device, as it will also be deleted during installation if left on the phone.

There are several known issues in this beta version. OPPO Interconnection features and touch response may freeze or fail in some cases. System apps and settings may show display issues or visual bugs. Users may also face screen flickering, app crashes, or apps becoming unresponsive. Third-party app support is limited, and some apps may not work properly.

Since this build uses Google Mobile Services, some OPPO apps that overlap with Google apps may not be available after installation.

OPPO also warns that this is not a simple install process. There is a real risk of bricking the device if something goes wrong. Users should only proceed if they fully understand the steps.

Nothing has been impressive with software rollouts so far. It was one of the first brands to conclude the Android 16 rollout, and now the company may already be working on the next major upgrade, based on Android 17. While most of the details are under wraps, we already know which Nothing phones are eligible for the Android 17 update.

The Android 17 update for Nothing phones will likely come with the Nothing OS 5.0 skin at the top, based on the company’s past naming scheme. Android 15 arrived with Nothing OS 3.0, and then Android 16 arrived last year with Nothing OS 4.0, so the next version, based on Android 17, is likely to come with Nothing OS 5.0.

Only three phones are missing from the list: the original Nothing Phone (1), Nothing Phone (2), and the budget-friendly CMF Phone 1. They have already received the promised number of Android OS updates, and therefore have run out of OS updates.

If you’re still using an outdated Nothing phone, now might be the right time to upgrade to a newer model with longer software support. The Nothing Phone (4a) and Phone (4a) Pro have just been released, promising OS updates until Android 19. Or, you can get the flagship Phone (3) for an extra major upgrade.

While Nothing hasn’t revealed anything about Android 17 yet, Google has already released a few public betas, offering a sneak peek at the upcoming features and changes. The stable version is expected to go live for Google Pixels in June, while other brands, including Nothing, will take additional time to fine-tune the software and add more features. Google has made several major changes to the Android development cycle in recent years, and as a result, newer versions now arrive a lot earlier than before. The upcoming Android 17 has already entered the development phase. In fact, Google has already released two public betas, giving us a sneak peek at the upcoming features and changes.

What’s the dessert name for Android 17?

The tech giant doesn’t name Android versions after desserts anymore. It abandoned that tradition with Android 10, sticking to only the version number for future releases.

However, the internal team still uses a dessert codename. Android 16 has a dessert name, “Baklava”, and for the upcoming Android 17, Google has chosen “Cinnamon Bun” as the dessert codename.

A cinnamon bun is a sweet, spiral-shaped pastry made with rolled dough and a mixture of butter, sugar, and ground cinnamon. It’s quite popular in northern Europe and North America.

Android 17: Upcoming features and changes

Bubbles

The bubble feature has been around here for quite a few years now, but that’s limited to conversation notifications. Google is now working on implementing it for all apps. The new Bubbles feature was spotted in Android 17 Beta 2, allowing users to run multiple floating apps without ever having to leave the full-screen app.

Once activated, users can enable a floating bubble for an app by tapping and holding the icon and then choosing “Bubble” from the context menu. On large-screen devices, a dedicated bubble bar appears in the taskbar, which makes it easy to organize bubbles and switch between them.

Limited Connects access

Android 17 introduces a new system-level Contacts Picker application, which will allow users to select one or more contacts to share with an app at a time. What makes it more privacy-focused is that apps won’t be able to track any changes you make to a contact’s information.

Google says Contact Picker grants temporary, session-based read access to the specific data fields selected by the user. That means the app will be required to ask for permissions again after the session timeout. The new feature also allows selections from the device’s personal or work profiles.

Seamless task continuity

Android 17 could bring the awaited “Task Continuity” feature, which will allow users to sync notifications, share files, and continue apps across their linked Android devices. Essentially, you will be able to transfer an app’s current state from one Android device to another.

As explained by Android Authority, this feature will show a suggestion on the taskbar representing the running app from another device. When you click this suggestion, the system initiates the handoff and passes the remote app’s state.

Google officially announced the new Handoff API in Android 17 Beta 2, which allows developers to specify the application state to resume on another Android device. Once enabled, the Android system displays a handoff suggestion in the launcher of the user’s nearby devices. This feature is designed to offer seamless task continuity across linked Android devices.

Redesigned privacy indicators

Android 17 Beta 2 introduced changes to privacy indicators, now featuring separate circles and multiple colors. Earlier, the privacy indicators were shown in a pill-shaped green enclosure. The icons now appear in separate circles, and the location icon has a blue circle instead of green.

System EyeDropper

Google has added an “EyeDropper” app in Android 17 Beta 2 to allow other apps to ask Android to pick the exact color of any pixel shown on the screen without requiring sensitive screen-capture permissions. This means developers will no longer need to build their own eyedropper tool or import third-party libraries, resulting in time saving and a slight reduction in the app’s file size.

SMS and OTP protection

With Android 17 Beta 2, Google has further strengthened OTP message protection by delaying access to OTP messages for three hours for apps that are not intended to be recipients. This narrows down OTP access to select apps, but it excludes the default SMS app, assistant apps, and companion apps for connected devices.

The latest change applies to WebOTP messages, SMS retriever format messages, and standard OTP SMS messages.

Better app adaptability

Google began phasing out apps’ ability to restrict screen orientation and resizability on large-screen devices with Android 16. However, it still allowed app developers to opt out of this change. But Android 17 makes it mandatory, and developers will no longer be able to opt out.

This change will make apps running on Android 17 fill the space and respect the device posture on large-screen devices. The users will still have the ability to opt in/out of using an app’s default behavior via the aspect ratio settings.

Versatile Video Coding (VVC) support

Google introduced the Versatile Video Encoding (VVC) standard (also known as H.266) in Android 17 Beta 1. This video compression standard can deliver video quality similar to or better than the original at reduced file sizes, provided that the Android device has the hardware decode support and capable drivers.

Loudness Management

Google is introducing the CTA-2075 loudness management API with Android 17 Beta 1. This allows apps to dynamically adjust audio playback loudness based on metadata from supported AAC content and device characteristics, resulting in a more consistent listening experience across applications and hardware.

The features and changes we’ve discussed so far have been spotted in the first two betas of Android 17. However, for non-Google brands like Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, and Samsung, the list would be much longer, as the Android 17 build for them will also include features from Android 16 QPR releases.

The first major release of a new Android OS happens around June. That build is shipped to most of the Android devices, which might also include some additional features and upgrades from their OEMs. Google Pixels, on the other hand, also receive QPR releases with new features and upgrades every three months (quarter).

Google released three Android 16 QPR releases: QPR1, QPR2, and QPR3. All three builds brought new features and meaningful upgrades, including Material 3 Expressive, auto-themed icons, Desktop Mode, Secure Lock Device, and Low Light mode. Google Pixels have received these QPR builds. For other brands, these new features and upgrades will be added as part of Android 17. So, there’ll be plenty of new features and upgrades for non-Google Pixel devices.

When will Google release Android 17?

Google is largely following the same timeline for Android 17 as last year’s Android 16, with a major SDK release in Q2 and a minor SDK release promised for Q4.

As of writing this post, Google has released two Android 17 betas: Beta 1 arrived on February 13, and Beta 2 arrived on February 26.

There will be a couple more beta releases before Google pushes the stable build. The stable build of Android 16 was released on June 10, 2025. Google is unlikely to change the timeline this year, and therefore, we’re expecting the stable Android 17 to land in June 2026.

As of writing this post, OnePlus hasn’t revealed anything about OxygenOS 17. Unfortunately, this will be the last major Android OS upgrade for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, as their update support ends in October. That also means these Google Pixels will likely miss out on the QPR2 release. Still, it’s impressive to see them included on the Android 17 list, given that they were launched with Android 12. That’s a solid five Android OS upgrades in total.

The first beta was released on February 13, and Google quickly followed up with the second beta in the same month. The platform stability phase begins this month, per the official timeline. That’s when SDK/NDK APIs and app-facing behaviors are finalized.

Steps to sign up for the Android 17 beta program on Motorola devices

Step 1: Create an account on Motorola’s community website. Skip this step if you already have it.

Step 2: Go to “My products” section and and tap “Moto”.

Step 3: Click “Add” and enter the details of your Motorola device.

Step 4: Check the “Opt-in device for MFN” box and click “Submit”.

Step 5: Go to the MFN Beta Testing page and look for the available testing opportunity for your Motorola device.

Step 6: Tap the registration link and fill in the required details.

Motorola may send emails regarding your beta application. Therefore, remember to check your inbox regularly, including the spam folder.

Please note that seats may be limited, so not everyone who signs up for the beta program may receive early access. To increase your chances, you must complete the steps as soon as Motorola announces the beta program for your device.

Just two weeks after dropping the first Android 17 beta, Google has released the second beta update with a limited-access contacts picker, EyeDropper API, enhanced connectivity, and better cross-device capabilities. The most exciting addition is the new Bubbles feature, which lets users turn any app into a floating bubble.

Android 17 Beta 2: What’s new and what’s changing?

Bubbles make multitasking easier

The new Bubbles feature turns any app into a floating bubble. This is an excellent multitasking feature, allowing users to run multiple floating apps without ever having to leave the full-screen app.

To use this feature, long-press an app icon, and you’ll see a “Bubble” option. That option quickly opens the app in a floating window. Tap it, and the app will shrink into a floating circle that stays at the top. On large-screen devices, there’s a dedicated bubble bar in the taskbar to organize and anchor bubbles.

The previous Pixel Launcher Search bar is back

The Android 17 Beta 1 removed the ring around the search bar and featured a dominant color from the user’s wallpaper. Well, that return in the Beta 2 for the Pixel Launcher, as spotted by Phone Arena. The AI Mode icon is now featured inside the circle towards the end of the search bar.

Redesigned privacy indicators

The Android 17 Beta 2 also brings minor design upgrades to privacy indicators. Earlier, when an app used your phone’s camera, location, and microphone, the icons were visible in the top-right corner, inside a pill-shaped green enclosure. In Beta 2, they are shown in separate circles. Also, the location is shown in blue instead of green.

Small but meaningful upgrades

• Satellite tile in Quick Settings: The Quick Settings in Android 17 Beta 2 features a new “Satellite” tile with the current status.

• System contacts picker: The new system-level contacts picker grants temporary, session-based read access to only the specific data fields selected by the user. It also allows users to choose between personal and work profiles, giving them more control over data sharing.

• System EyeDropper: Beta 2 introduces a new system-level EyeDropper API that allows apps to request a color from any pixel on the display without requiring sensitive screen-capture permissions.

• New “Accounts and backup” menu in Settings: It replaces “Back up or copy data” and “Passwords, passkeys & accounts.”

• SMS and OTP protection: For apps that are not intended as receipts, OTP messages are delayed for three hours. It doesn’t include the default SMS app, assistant apps, and companion apps for connected devices.

How to install Android 17 Beta 2 update?

If your Google Pixel is already running Android 17 Beta 1, you can easily install Beta 2 by navigating to Settings > System > Software Updates > System Updates.

If you’re not already part of the beta program, visit google.com/android/beta and “Opt in” on your selected device. Make sure you’re logged into the website with the same Google account. After opting in, you should be able to install the latest beta update on your Google Pixel from the Software Updates section in the Settings app.

Keep in mind that there’s no going back once you install a beta update. If you try to leave the Beta early, you’ll need to perform a full data wipe.

Google released Android 17 Beta 2, advancing system APIs and developer tools ahead of the stable release expected later this year. The update prioritizes privacy enforcement, cross-device functionality, and input refinements while maintaining Google’s two-SDK release cycle with the major version in Q2.

Windowing and Interface Changes

The Bubbles feature now functions as a complete windowing mode. Users create floating app windows by long-pressing app icons on phones, tablets, and foldables. Large-screen devices receive a bubble bar within the taskbar for organizing and repositioning windows. Developers must implement multi-window guidelines for proper functionality.

A system-level EyeDropper API lets apps sample any screen pixel without requesting screen capture permissions. The new Contacts Picker using ACTION_PICK_CONTACTS grants temporary access to user-selected contact fields only, supporting personal and work profiles while reducing reliance on READ_CONTACTS permission.

Input and Hardware Support

Touchpad pointer capture has been corrected. Previous versions reported absolute finger positions rather than relative movement during capture, causing issues for games and specific applications. Android 17 now processes touchpad input as mouse movement by default. Apps requiring precise finger tracking can enable absolute capture mode.

The getInitialRestingBounds API improves the Interactive Chooser by detecting the share sheet’s final position after animations complete, enabling apps to adjust layouts accordingly.

Cross-Device and Connectivity Features

The Handoff API enables state transfer between devices through CompanionDeviceManager. The system displays handoff suggestions on nearby devices, allowing users to resume tasks. If the destination device lacks the app, the feature falls back to web-based continuation.

Ultra-Wideband DL-TDOA support brings privacy-focused indoor navigation compliant with FiRa 4.0. Wi-Fi Alliance’s Proximity Detection standard improves ranging accuracy over Wi-Fi Aware. Streaming apps access carrier-allocated bandwidth limits via getStreamingAppMaxDownlinkKbps and getStreamingAppMaxUplinkKbps for quality optimization.

Motorola is clearly stepping up its software game. Just a day ago, it began the Android 17 beta program ahead of its competitors, and now, the beta program has just gone live for a new set of smartphones.

The Motorola Edge 2025, Moto G57, and Moto G57 Power were the first phones to join the Android 17 beta program. Now, it’s expanding to Moto G86, Moto G86 Power, Motorola Edge 60, Edge 60 Fusion, Edge 70, and Edge 70 Fusion in multiple regions.

If you have any of these Motorola smartphones and live in a supported region, you can sign up for the Android 17 beta program to get early access to the latest features and upgrades. However, that also means you’re ready to face bugs or broken features that may appear in beta builds.

Here’s how to sign up for Motorola’s Android 17 beta program

1. Create an account on Motorola’s community website (if you haven’t already).
2. Visit the profile page and update your IMEI or serial number (SN) details.
3. Opt in for MFN on your Motorola community profile.
4. Always ensure that your phone is running the latest software.
5. Go to the MFN Beta Testing Opportunities page to see a testing opportunity for your Motorola device.
6. Tap on the registration link for your Motorola phone.
7. Fill in the required details and submit your application.

Please keep in mind that Motorola may send emails regarding your beta application. So, remember to check your inbox regularly, including the spam folder.

Once your beta application is approved, you’ll receive an OTA update. It’s best to manually check for updates once in a while by navigating to Settings > System updates > Check for updates.

While the Android 17 beta program has gone live for several Motorola phones, the update rollout is yet to begin. Once that happens, we’ll learn about the new features and changes. For now, users can expect to see Material 3 Expressive enhancements, Live Notification updates, and a redesigned desktop mode, among many changes.
