The Snapdragon 835-powered phone is HTC’s flagship for the year. One of the most anticipated features of the phone is its unique mode of interaction which HTC is calling Edge Sense. Edge Sense lets you control the phone by simply squeezing the sides of the phone.

Since this is also a flagship, its bound to be pretty expensive. What is surprising is that there are reports the HTC U 11 may sell for a lesser price than the HTC U Ultra.

The HTC U Ultra was released earlier this year and is powered by a Snapdragon 821 processor. It is also a high-end smartphone but its high price tag is agreed by many to be unreasonable. A report from Taiwan says the HTC U 11 may be priced below NT $20,000 (~$662) which is less than the NT $20,900 promo price (~$692) that the U Ultra currently sells for now. The U Ultra goes for $749 in the US.

Since the U Ultra sells for more in the US, expect to still pay more for the U 11 as well. However, you might just not be paying as much as $749 for it.

Pre-order for the HTC U 11 is reported to begin on the 19th of May.

From the names, it was easy to tell that there was still one announced phone. That phone is the HTC U a.k.a. Ocean and leakster Evan Blass shared its first real image yesterday.

The HTC U has the same liquid surface design of its siblings but appears to be more curved at the corners. Instead of a square sensor like the U Ultra, this is round. The LED flash is also sitting on the left. One feature most people are looking forward to on the HTC U is the touch sensitive frame. By squeezing the sides or swiping, you can control the phone but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have physical buttons.

The HTC U doesn’t have the same dual screen as the bigger U Ultra. The front camera also sits on the right side. Asides from that every other thing is the same.

READ MORE: All Metal HTC One X10 Official in Russia: A Better Alternative to The U play

The HTC U will have a 5.5-inch 2K display, a Snapdragon 835, 4GB RAM, and 64GB of storage. The rear camera is a 12MP IMX362 sensor while up front is a 16MP IMX351 sensor. It will launch with HTC’s Sense 9 UI on top of Android 7.1.

There is no release date yet but it is expected to be unveiled in April followed by a May Global release.

After sapphires, diamonds are one of the hardest substances in the world. Akhan Semiconductor, a firm that manufactures diamonds that can be used on electronic products, is expected to release a smartphone that features a screen built with diamond glass.

The Mirage Diamond Glass manufactured by Akhan Semiconductor will be sturdier, tougher and cleaner than conventional displays, says Adam Khan, the CEO of Akhan Semiconductor. Even though the company is in discussions with well-known device manufacturers, it will be able to provide Mirage Diamond Glass to one smartphone maker and one wearable.

There are some reasons why the company has decided to work with few companies initially. One of the reasons is shortage of supply and the other one is that it wants to provide the selected companies to exclusively boast of diamond glass screens. In its current standing, Akhan Semiconductor will be build diamond glass for 10 million to 30 million smartphones. For wearables such as smartphones and fitness bands, it would be able to provide less than 1 million diamond glass.

Related: HTC U Ultra, U Play: All Official Images of Color Variants, Pre-order Details, Pricing, Availability

Conventional displays can break or get cracks easily after frequent drops. Also, screens can get scratched with things like keys. In order to prevent displays for breaking or getting scratched easily, smartphone OEMs make use of stronger Gorilla Glass that sits on top on regular displays. Using diamond glass on top of regular screens can increase its strength by 6 times and also make them 10 times harder.

Because of its natural feature of resisting dirt and water, diamond glass screens can be cleaner than conventional screens. Devices that will feature diamond glass screens can remain 800 times cooler. Smartphones featuring it is likely to feature costlier a pricing. However, according to Khan, its pricing will be similar to the Moto ShatterShield technology made available on smartphones like Moto Z Force Droid and Droid Turbo 2. At present, it costs up to $120 per phone smartphone for Motorola to use Shatterfield screen technology on its smartphones.

HTC U Ultra and HTC U Play Design and Color Variants

The HTC U Ultra and U Play smartphones have their metallic chassis is sandwiched between Gorilla Glass 5 sheets on both sides. The 3D contoured glass design that is described as “liquid surface” by the Taiwanese company allows both smartphones to boast distinctive reflective design.

To achieve it, HTC has adopted a new process of bonding multiple layers of colors to the glass to reflect light beautifully. However, the glossy design seems to attract fingerprints easily.

The HTC U Ultra and U Play are available in vibrant colors like Brilliant Black, Ice White, Sapphire Blue and Cosmetic Pink. The HTC U Ultra comes in 64 GB and 128 GB storage variants, but the latter one is a luxurious model that features the ultra-hard sapphire glass for its display.

Also, there won’t be any device named HTC 11 in 2017.

HTC’s President of Smartphone and Connected Device Business, Chialin Chang, has confirmed that this year will see only six to seven smartphones from the company. Since HTC has now released HTC U Ultra and U Play smartphones, the Taiwanese company are now expected to release four to five new smartphones by the end of 2017.

As far as HTC 11 is concerned, Chang has also said that the company’s flagship won’t release with HTC 11 moniker as rumors are stating. However, he confirmed that the Taiwanese company is working on a new flagship smartphone for 2017. However, he did not reveal any information on it.

Related: HTC 11 Code-named HTC Ocean: Latest Leaks, Expected Specs & Launch Date

Chang has also revealed that HTC is also working on releasing new Desire-line of smartphones that will be aimed towards who wish to buy “fun and affordable” devices. But there is no confirmation on when the company would be unveiling its next smartphone. It is expected to announce the rumored HTC One X10 at the upcoming MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2017 event that will be held in next month.

Even though 2016’s flagship smartphone, the HTC 10, is one of the best smartphones from the company, it recorded the lowest revenue figures in the past 11 years by December 2016. Since it encountered a revenue loss in the last quarter of 2016, it is likely to suffer a loss in the first quarter of 2017. If this happens, it would be the seventh continuous quarterly loss for HTC.

In the September 2016, rumors started swirling that HTC would be introducing three smartphones from its new Ocean line of smartphones by the first quarter of this year. Among the rumored Ocean smartphones such as Ocean Smart, Ocean Note, and Ocean Master, the company has now released Ocean Note as HTC U Ultra.

The Ocean Smart is said to be a basic model. There is no confirmation on whether the company released the Ocean Smart as HTC U Play because the smartphone was internally known as HTC Alpine. The HTC Ocean Master is rumored as flagship.

Speculations are rife that the HTC Ocean Master does not feature any physical buttons on its sides. It is said to be equipped with sensors on its edges that can be touched to access various functions like power, volume controllers, and camera.

The new U series are the pioneers of a new design from HTC. Both phones have a curved glass back HTC calls liquid surface. Their fingerprint scanners are front-mounted and like the HTC Bolt, they are also missing audio jacks.

HTC U Ultra

The U Ultra is the higher variant with a 5.7-inch Quad HD display with corning gorilla glass 5 and a smaller 2-inch (160 x 1040) display at the top just like that of the LG V20 and pretty much does the same work too. There is a Snapdragon 821 processor underneath the hood, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and a SD card slot.

The primary camera of the HTC U Ultra is a 12MP UltraPixel sensor with a f/1.8 aperture and 1.55-micron pixels, PDAF,and laser focus. The front facing camera is a 16MP shooter.

The U Ultra comes with some cool features such as four omni-directional microphones that records sound in 360° for immersive audio. It also has a new software feature called HTC Sense Companion that learns about your usage over time and improves how your phone works, sort of like an AI assistant. The U Ultra has a 3000mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0.

HTC U Play

The U Play tones down things a lot. There is a single 5.2-inch 1080p display and the processor is Mediatek’s Helio P10. Dependng on the region, there is a 3GB + 32GB model or a 4GB + 64GB model. The rear and front camera are both 16MP sensors but the front facing camera also has a special 4MP UltraPixel shooting mode. There is a 2500mAh battery inside which is pretty small considering the display is 5.2-inches.

Both phones are running Android Nougat and will first be available in Taiwan. The U Ultra will be available globally for $749 unlocked and you can pre-order it on HTC.com starting today. The U Play will be released in certain regions but the price is still unknown for now.

Recent leaks have claimed that the Taiwanese company will announce HTC U Ultra and U Play smartphones at the event. Speculations also indicate that HTC U Ultra will feature the marvelous camera present on Google Pixel.

At the end of 2016, rumors had revealed that the HTC U Ultra (codenamed as Ocean Note) would be sporting a rear camera with a highest DxOMark score. Newer information indicates that HTC U Ultra will be housing the same camera that is present on Google Pixel and Pixel XL. Previous speculations seem to have incorrectly stated that a dual camera setup will be available on HTC U Ultra.

DxOMark is the most trusted industry standard for measuring camera and image quality. The Google Pixel’s 12.3-megapixel camera has a highest DxOMark rating of 89.

HTC is expected to tweak the camera software on U Ultra. Hence, the image quality and camera performance will be different from what the Pixel smartphones can deliver.

The HTC U Ultra is speculated to be driven by Snapdragon 821 chipset that will be support by 4 GB of RAM. Leaked photos have revealed that it will be sporting 5.7-inch quad HD display. In December 2016, the Taiwanese company met with a 16.4 percent month-on-month and 1.7 percent year-on-year decline.

The total revenue generated by HTC for the entire year of 2016 is NT$78.16 billion. This number is not impressive as it is 35 percent dip compared to the revenue generated by the company in 2015. Moreover, it is the worst annual figure in the past 11 years. The highest annual figure it generated was in 2011 when it earned NT$465.7 billion.

HTC has reached NT$22.2 billion revenue in the last quarter of 2016. In the third quarter, the company announced a net decline of NT$2.18 per share when the generated revenue was almost same it recorded in the fourth quarter.

In the last quarter of 2016, HTC is expected to continue to record losses. If it happens, it will the seventh consecutive quarterly loss for the company.

The poor sales record of HTC shows that the HTC 10 that was well-received by critics and audience did not help in improving its revenue. The company even manufactured the Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones. Even though the Pixel smartphones are sold as Google products and not as HTC devices, the Taiwanese firm did generate some revenue for it but even that has not helped in bettering its revenue.

Related: HTC Vive Smartphone with Stunning Unique Designs In Works?

HTC has couple of smartphones up it sleeves that can help the company to record better sales. On Jan. 12, it is expected to unveiling a stylus totting HTC U Ultra phablet and its smaller sibling, HTC U Play. Both the smartphones will not be featuring the standard 3.5mm audio jack. The HTC U Ultra is expected to feature a 6-inch display whereas the U Play may arrive with a 5.2-inch screen.

HTC One X10, an upgraded version for last year’s HTC One X9. It is expected to be a midrange device with features like 5.5-inch full HD screen and an octa-core MediaTek SoC. It is also rumored to be working on HTC Vive smartphone.

HTC’s next flagship, the HTC 11 that is slated to replace HTC 10 from 2016 is also under the wraps. It is rumored to get unleashed in the first quarter of 2017 with features like 5.5-inch quad HD display and Snapdragon 835.

The forthcoming smartphones do appear promising. Only time will tell whether these devices help in recording better revenue this year.

Over the next three months, Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC is expected to unveil three smartphones. Already, a teased poster had reveal a launch event for an HTC U-series device has been scheduled for January 12.

While we are yet to know the right names the devices would launch with, popular tipster and ROM developer @LlabTooFer has leaked the code-names by which the three upcoming HTC smartphones are known. According to a tweet he posted on Twitter, the three devices are code-named HTC Alpine, HTC Ocean Note and HTC E66 which he gave as the HTC One X10.

Earlier leaks have give the HTC Ocean Note as the HTC U Ultra that would be launched on January 12. The top of the pack is likely the HTC Alpine which is identified as the next gen flagship – HTC 11. The HTC One X10 was recently featured in a leaked render and is now identified with the code-name HTC E66.

The HTC U Ultra is rumored to have a 6-inch display and will be available in Black, White and Blue. The phablet will not carry a 3.5mm earphone jack but will use the Type-C USB port. On the other hand, the HTC One X10 is said to feature a 5.5-inch screen. Under the hood is the MediaTek MT6755 SoC with an octa-core 1.9GHz CPU, and the Mali T860 GPU. The rear camera weighs in at 16.3MP with a front facing 7.9MP snapper. Finally, 2017 flagship-type specs are expected for the HTC 11. That means a 5.5-inch screen with a 1440 x 2560 resolution and perhaps the recently unveiled Snapdragon 835 chipset will power the phone.

The invitations that were sent out last month carries a large-sized ‘U’ on a purple colored background. According to well-known leakster, @OnLeaks, an unverified source has revealed that HTC Ocean Note phablet is rumored that is unveiling on Jan. 12 as HTC U Ultra.

The alleged phablet is expected to house a 6-inch display. Just as previous leaks have suggested the phablet does not feature a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Since it is expected to feature a USB Type-C port, it may allow users to listen to music by connecting headphones to the new port.

A leaked information coming from Taiwanese retailer named Eprice suggests that the HTC Ocean Note (aka HTC U Ultra) will be arriving with an outstanding rear camera. It is expected to be so good that its DxOMark score is rumored to be highest over other smartphones. Currently, the Google Pixel has the highest DxOMark score of 89.

HTC Ocean Note seems to belong to a new series of smartphones from the Taiwanese company. It will be a dual SIM smartphone with its first SIM carrying support for 4G connectivity and its second SIM will support 3G networks.

It is speculated to be available in color choices like Black, White and Blue. Several leaked images of its case suggests that will be housing a stylus.

The other two rumored smartphones that are expected to belong to the new series are HTC Ocean Smart and Ocean Master. The Ocean Smart is expected to arrive with midrange specs whereas the Ocean Master is speculated to be graced with flagship specs.
