Huawei might be working on a new technology that could change the way you interact with its future smartwatches. A patent from the company recently emerged which showcased a 3D fingerprint sensor that supports multifunctional gestures. So here’s what we know.

Next-gen Huawei smartwatches may pack new fingerprint tech

The Chinese tech giant’s recent patent reveals a new sensor that not only maps fingerprints but also supports multipurpose gestures (Via MySmartPrice). One of the sketches even shows the entire display being capable of reading the user’s fingerprint. The sensor would even allow for a 360 degree imprint scanning of the finger, which would later allow for different actions that users can map.

Thanks to this 3D fingerprint tech, users might be able to perform various tasks through each finger. So your thumb can be registered as a back button, while the index finger launches the calling option. The sensor may allow gestures as well for controlling the screen brightness or volume levels. This is showcased in another image that shows the user twisting their finger either clockwise or anti-clockwise on the sensor to adjust brightness and volume.

Keep in mind that Huawei has only patented this technology for its wearables. So it seems unlikely that any upcoming Huawei smartwatches would feature this advanced fingerprint sensor. We also have no way of knowing if the company is actually working on such a feature or just covering all bases. Huawei and Xiaomi Not to Sue Each Other for Patent Infringement for 10 Years

Huawei and Xiaomi announced on Wednesday that they have reached a global patent cross-licensing deal. The deal covers multiple communications technologies, including 5G. The deal is a significant development for both companies. Huawei is the world’s leading telecom equipment maker and a major player in the smartphone market. And as you know, Xiaomi is the world’s third-largest smartphone maker.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it is likely that both companies will benefit from the agreement. Huawei will gain access to Xiaomi’s patents, which will help it to develop new products and services. Xiaomi will also benefit from the deal, as it will no longer have to pay patent licensing fees to Huawei.

The deal is also will help both companies to develop 5G products and services. The deal is expected to take effect in early 2024. This means that the deal will not be finalized until then. However, it is likely that the deal will be finalized as planned, as both companies have expressed their commitment to the agreement. The agreement will be in effect for 10 years. After that, the two companies may choose to renew the agreement or negotiate a new one.

A Chinese vendor who was caught selling mosquito killer lamps and earphones with the Huawei trademark has been fined up to $294,000. The fine of 2 million yuan to the goods seller was for trademark infringement. The company named in the documents filed at China’s trademark office was Shenzhen Zhiyuan Network Technology Co. Ltd. Huawei had filed an unfair competition dispute against the company.

Huawei stated that it believed Zhiyuan’s products with the words Huawei infringed on its rights, and thus liable for compensation. The documents which have entered the public domain in China indicated that Huawei listed the mosquito killer lamps and earphones as the products in contention. Both products were sold via the Zhiyuan Company’s online store and were marked with the words Huawei. In addition, both products prominently used a logo similar to Huawei’s in the online page’s picture.

The plaintiff, Huawei notes that the action of Zhiyuan was a trademark infringement. There were other words used by the respondent to connote a non-existent connection with Huawei. The respondent was therefore accused of conducting false publicity which constitutes unfair competition. Huawei says it wants the defendant to bear joint and several liabilities on behalf of its company. The defendant was Mr. Tang, who argued that he was not the sole shareholder of the company.
Up to nine product links were identified by Huawei with an estimated sale of over 500,000 units.

The estimated sales amount was 7.55 million yuan ($1.11 million). The Court ruled that Zhiyuan Company copied and imitated the Huawei trademark. This action infringed the plaintiff’s right to exclusive use of the Huawei trademark. Furthermore, the prominent use of Huawei and other logos on the product pages and names of eight earphones also violated the rights of the plaintiff. The sole shareholder Tang X was thus mandated to jointly compensate Huawei for economic losses up to 2 million yuan ($264,000).

Huawei has just been granted a new patent for what appears to be a unique futuristic smartphone. The device in the documents appears to have a flexible rolling display panel technology.

The patent was filed with the Chinese State Intellectual Property Office and was titled “flexible screen support mechanism and rollable electronic equipment.” The documents carried the patent number CN114439843A (Via ITHome). Looking at this document, the patent describes an electronic device that has a flexible display technology that is supported by a unique that is housed under the screen. The patent description further added that it will have “simple structure, small storage space, and can be applied to portable devices.”

Notably, the structure observed in the patent sketches that supports the device’s display also includes a rotating component as well. It has a rotating shaft mechanism that is covered by a protective case on either side. Although, it is unclear if the rotating process itself is automated or manual. Meanwhile, the support mechanism has various brace like structures that enable the foldable screen.

As of right now, it is unclear if this patented device is actually a smartphone. It is quite likely that the product is a portable display of sorts that is meant to be carried around with a low powered chipset for basic UI functions that is paired with a small storage as well. Keep in mind that this is still just a patent and we have no way of confirming whether the Chinese tech giant is actually working on a such a product or is simply covering all bases.

Ever since Huawei got restricted by the US sanctions, the company has been diversifying its product catalog away from smartphones, and into the IoT(Internet of Things) business instead. The company has been branching out into other businesses, such as Smart TVs, Smartwatches, and even Smart Electric Cars. In fact, Huawei may be planning to release devices in new product categories too, like its own medical assistance device. Recently, a patent database revealed that the company is working on wearables that help the blind to navigate in their daily lives.

The news comes from China’s National Patent Database, QCC.com. Huawei Technologies Company Limited was approved of their “blind navigation wearable technology” and the public patent, ID number CN114002684A, was published on Feb 1, 2022.

The patent reveals that the technology is a pair of wearables for the blind to know and navigate around their surroundings. The technology will be equipped with ultrasonic sensors. The sensors emit ultrasonic signals in all directions and the signals will be reflected back to the device, then the device interprets the signal and maps out the surroundings. All of this data will be relayed to the user in a very concise manner, and the process is autonomous, providing convenience for the blind user.

No info was given wear the wearable is a smartwatch, smart glasses, or wireless earwear. However, considering this is a technology designed for blind people, high chance that it is a device equipped with speakers, i.e. wireless headphones or wireless earphones.

For the past 2 years, manufacturers are flooding into the wireless earphones market with their own in-house options. There have been a few wireless headphones options too like from Apple and Sony. And it looks like an upcoming competitor may be entering the scene soon as Huawei has recently published a patent for a technology that could bring forward the future of wireless headphones.

As of January 25, 2022, Huawei has submitted a patent for a wireless charging solution for wireless headphones to the Chinese Regulated Patent Database, QCC. 

For context, the AirPods Max and Sony WH-1000XM4 do not support wireless charging, the AirPods Max charges via a Lightning cable, while the Sony WH1000XM4 receives juice forms its USB Type C port. If Huawei were to implement this patent into its upcoming first pair of wireless headphones, it would be an industry first for the company, and it would be the main selling point for users who were planning to buy such wireless headphones that they would like to wirelessly charge.

As for the details on how the wireless charging solution works, Huawei has listed out the patent as follows:

• The wireless earphones will include two ear cups, with a headband connecting both ear cups together.

• Each ear cup contains its casing, touch controls, its respective wireless charging copper contacts, and its circuitry board connecting to the battery. The copper contacts are located under the casing and in front of the circuitry board. When the ear cup is in contact with a wireless charging pad, the headphones will start charging via the copper contacts n the ear cups.
• The copper contacts are conductive to electricity, and the lines on the copper contact pads will be spaced evenly and effectively for maximum induction efficiency(ie for one coil on the copper contact pads, it may have a 20%-80% bigger effective induction area size than its physical area occupied)

If successfully brought into the market, wireless headphones can finally be truly wireless, as you no longer need a wired cable to charge the headset no more. 

As of Huawei’s current lineup of wireless earphones, Huawei currently has the bold yet innovative design of its Huawei Freebuds Lipstick Earbuds. These earbuds are a pair of very light and comfortable with a solid metal build quality. The steel body of both earbuds and the charging case, paired with its gold-accented colourway,  gives it a decent sense of luxury. The earbuds also feature active-noise cancellation for those who want to enjoy their music in peace.

A new patent from Huawei has revealed yet another smartphone that sports a rollable display. However, the aspect that sets it apart from the ones we have covered previously is the support for gesture controls.

According to a LetsGoDigital report, the Chinese tech giant filed a patent with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) for a new method for a ‘controllable foldable display with haptic and sound effect.’ While we had reported on a recent patent that described a rollable display that wrapped around what appeared to be a futuristic Mate series device, this patent talks about a system that describes how this rollable screen can be rolled in and out.

The patent outlines a method that allows users to operate this rolling out or extending panel mechanism, through the use of touch movements (or hand gestures on the screen), which Huawei has subbed as “freehand gesture control.” To control the extendable display, a virtual slider will be displayed on the screen that lets users begin the rollout process. This system will also be paired with a haptic feedback system and a sound effect as well. Furthermore, the rollable smartphone’s support for freehand gesture control will be powered by a camera and/or a motion sensor.

Through this, the user can simply swipe right above the display to have it roll out and extend while swiping left would have the screen retract back to its original position. But this is just scratching the surface, as Huawei intends to allow users to even control the speed at which the display rolls out. So to achieve varying speeds as per user requirements, the brand plans on use a system that involves an ‘X’ number of the users’ fingers in the air. In simpler terms, the sensor recognizes two, three, four, or even five fingers and adjusts its speed accordingly.

Huawei has just patent another smartphone that features a rollable display. We had previously reported on a possible future Mate phone with an Arc display and what appeared to be a Mate X Rollable a couple of weeks ago. Now, a new patent reveals another futuristic Mate model with a rollable display and a triple camera setup.

According to a LetsGoDigital report, the Chinese tech giant has patent a new device that sports a wrap around display that cover the front side and most of the rear panel as well. But its most highlighting aspect is that this display can be pulled out from one side on the front, which extends the display to a small tablet size. When extended, the display is extended from the right side of the handset, while the display on the rear rolls towards the front.

Notably, Ts Designer even offers us a 3D concept render of this device and its rollable display in action on his YouTube channel. Looking at this video, we can observe the device in three modes. One is where the device resembles the Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha in its compact form, while the other two is when its screen is rolled out. In one of the positions, the screen is enlarged by 35 percent or only extended to half of its total capacity, while the other has it completely rolled out, reaching a size 70 percent larger than its compact position.

In other words, a 6.5 inch display can reach a size of up to 11 inch to achieve a tablet format. This is basically the size offered by modern day foldable smartphones. Furthermore, it is also quite a practical design and could very well a Mate series of phone that launches sometime in the future. The lack of a hinge and folding mechanism could also ensure no creases being formed on the surface of the display as well. The front side may even house an in display camera technology, while the rear offers a triple camera setup. Keep in mind that this is still a patent and it is unknown if the company is actually working on such a product.

A new Huawei patent has just been spotted, which might be for the next gen flagship Mate 50 smartphone. The patented device sports an ‘Arc screen’ with an under display selfie camera.

According to the LetsGoDigital report, the Chinese tech giant had filed a new patent with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office). Looking at the patent, the smartphone features a curved display that covers the entire front side of the device along with both of its sides. Notably, the Mate 40 Pro last year featured an 88 degree edge to edge display with side touch functionality. Now, it seems that the company might be working on further iterating on this display technology.

As per the patent, the new futuristic smartphone sports an ‘Arc Display,’ which is its most highlighting feature. Furthermore, the screen also curves and reaches till the rear side of the device while the sides offer various touch based functionality as well since there are no side buttons. These functions include the volume rockers along with message notifications that pop up on the side display. Although some of these features are already present in existing Huawei smartphones, the company places an emphasis on the side display functions even more and would likely include new features as well.

Interestingly, Technizo Concept also made a render based on this patent, which showcases the device in a 3D model. A major aspect of the device is that there is no selfie camera visible on the front, which implies that the brand is likely working on offering an under display camera solution. Huawei Technologies might be working on a new Mate X series smartphone. A new patent has hinted at a possible Mate X Rollable smartphone, which features a rollable display that can be pulled out and extended.

According to a LetsGoDigital report, the Chinese tech giant filed a patent with WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) earlier this year. The patent depicts a handset with a rolling display that features a magnetic mechanism that helps flatten the panel when pull out. In other words, this magnetic system would prevent the extended display from folding or bending once out of the frame. Notably, the device’s display also wraps around the smartphone as well.

The shape of the pulled out display is maintained through the use of two strategically placed magnets. This even prevents any creasing of the device as well. Furthermore, the patent reveals that the Mate X Rollable sports a POLED (plastic organic light emitting diode) display with a plastic base layer. Interestingly, the patent describes the device and its structure in detail and reveals that the rollable phone has three modes. One in its regular mode with the display wrapped around and reaching the back of the device, while the second has it pulled outward slightly. The final mode is where it is fully extended.

In its compact form, the patented handset resembles the Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha Concept Phone. While the device has a 6.5 inch screen in this form, the front panel can grow by 70 percent in its pulled out form reaching 11 inch in size. Earlier this year, the Huawei Mate X2 was officially launched in China. This was the latest foldable smartphone from the company. Now, a new patent reveals that the brand might be working on a multi function protective cover for the device.

The patent is on CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration) as of right now and showcases a protective cover for the Mate X2. This patent was applied by the Chinese tech giant back in January 2021 and has just been granted. So, this patent was applied before the device’s launch and could be arriving soon. Furthermore, the patent listing also features some product sketches of this patent that reveals some details regarding its design.

Looking at these images, the cutouts and design are in line with the Mate X2’s design, although, an interesting vertical cut out on the rear can also be observed. The patent description states that this vertical cut is a transparent window that would allow the users to observe the time and notifications from the external display when the device is folded. This is quite practical considering the device has an inward folding device and a conventional rear cover might block the external screen as well.

Notably, a 3D render of the patent was also spotted, which reveals a foldable stand on the rear. This stand on the back of the device would enable users to place the device in a manner similar to the stands on the back of regular smartphones. So, one can simply put the device on a table and consume multimedia content when the device is unfolded without having to hold the foldable smartphone. Notably, the cover is a transparent protective case while the stand is made from an opaque black material.

Huawei has just recently published a new patent, which was related to the control system of autonomous vehicles. While smart cars with self driving technology are already available, the company seeks to improve the overall driving and travel experience.

According to the patent titled “Smart Car Control Method, Device and Control System,” the Chinese tech giant is working on a smart car control system that could improve the autonomous technology behind self driving cars. As per an ITHome report, the patent also describes a system for controlling smart cars, which is capable of improving the comfort for passengers as well as the driving experience of the self driving smart car.

This system would control the smart car’s driving mode, its driving style, to reach the speed of the vehicle at an optimal level. Once it reaches this optimal speed, it would also shift the driving mode to maintain it. In simpler terms, it would effectively work in real time to make the experience smooth and comfortable for the passengers riding in the vehicle, including the one behind the wheel.

Unfortunately, this is still a patent at the moment so finer details regarding this smart control system are currently unknown. Furthermore, it is also unclear if the smartphone maker is actually working on such a product or is just covering all bases. A new patent from Huawei has recently surfaced. This patent is for a game controller, which is designed to work with a VR headset to allow users to control their actions in virtual reality.

According to an ITHome report, the Chinese tech giant was awarded that patent earlier this week and carried the patent number CN306513655S. In the patent application, a brief description can also be observed, which reads tha the product in the patents is a “Gamepad” and is purpose is to primarily be used for offering “controler in VR games or achieve other interactions in a virtual setting. The patent also arrives with certain sketches and 3D renders of this VR controller as well.

Looking at these images, the game controller carries a relatively common design that can also be found with other VR based controllers. On the front it offers three buttons along with a joystick, which is likely for movement based controls and more. On the right side of the product, there is another mechanism that is visible, which might be another button or have some other function that is unclear at the moment. The Chinese tech giant has already ventured into VR technology with related headsets, so it is likely working on new controllers as well.

Huawei has just filed a patent for a new technology. This patent is for a new “wireless charging system,” which is capable of ranged transmission. In other words, it describes a system that is capable of raising the distance for the wireless charging technology.

According to an ITHome report, the patent with a publication number CN112564295A describes a wireless charging technology, which is capable of transmission while having a distance between transmitting electrode and the one receiving electrode. To put it simply, its ranged form of wireless charging technology. Looking at the patent description, it states that current wireless charging technology requires two coils to be placed directly opposite to each other, with the distance between the two being very close to transmit power.

This greatly limits the application of the wireless charging technology. Thus, the patent from the Chinese tech giant states that it could work with a variety of materials like iron, aluminum, copper, other alloys, metal pipes, and various other items. Furthermore, it also adds that the technology can also use humans, animals, soil, earth, sea water and other non metallic dielectric objects to as well, as long as its conductivity is greater than that of air to pass a charge through them.

The patent from Huawei seeks to raise the applications of wireless charging technology as a whole. By increasing the effective range of charging, this technology could be a boon for various other products apart from smartphones as well, including smartwatches and smart bands. Huawei announced that it witnessed its largest ever jump in patent ownership last year. This included a variety of patents that it owns, which arrives after the company ramped up its analysis and growth effort in 2020.

According to a FinancialTimes report, the Chinese tech giant raised its efforts in innovation after it was placed in the Entity List trade ban, which essentially made it mandatory for US based firms to acquire license to trade with Huawei. Furthermore, the company also had its chip supply from TSMC cut off after the Trump administration reinforced restrictions on the company. Due to this, the brand’s smartphone shipments fell sharply within the final quarter of last year.

Thus, the smartphone maker ramped up its patent applications, with the firm holding more than 100,000 patents in 2020. This is up from 85,000 patents from a year prior, marking the highest annual jump of patents from the company. Notably, Huawei also ranks as the biggest patent holder, accounting for a large share of patents for a variety of fields like telecom equipment, 5G technology, and more.

The company has even filed for patents in applied sciences as well, including artificial intelligence. Additionally, the company was also the largest applicant in the World Intellectual Properaty Organization (WIPO). This move is also a part of the company’s efforts to raise its revenue from patent licensing, with it pushing for 5G mobile tech related patents in the US.

According to a LetsGoDigital report, the Chinese tech giant applied for a new patent for a smartphone that features an under screen selfie camera along with a bezel display. The company filed for the design patent with the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration), with the documentation arriving with 7 product sketches and 2 color renders as well. This patent was published earlier today (12th January 2021) and details an interesting device.

Looking at the patent sketches, Huawei managed to house a thin strip display on the top bezel of the screen. The purpose of this tiny screen is to display basic information like the time, network status and signals, and all the other basic details that a conventional status bar houses. Placing all of this essential information on the top offers more screen real estate to be used for the display. In other words, playing media like videos or movies would not have this information disappear and the user can always check the time without pausing or swiping down.

Another interesting detail in the Huawei patent is the lack of a front facing shooter. Furthermore, no pop up camera mechanism can be observed on the top. So, it is highly likely that the company aims to house the selfie shooter under the screen itself.  Unfortunately, finer details regarding this device are currently unknown, but the sketches also reveal the large quad camera module on the rear. At the moment, it is unknown if the company is actually working on such a device, so stay tuned for more updates.

Huawei makes a number of products apart from telecom equipment and smartphones. The company is also exploring new categories like UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). Hence, the firm has patented a technology related to drones.

Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. filed a patent with the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration) for ‘Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Identification Module and Storage Method’ in June 2019. However, it got approved and published on December 8, 2020. In simpler words, this patent details how the company’s future drones can be identified.

For those unaware, phones come with two physical identifiers – MAC (Media Access Control) and IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity). The former is used for WiFi and Bluetooth, whereas the latter is used by SIM cards. Since these identifiers are unique, the device with a particular identifier can be easily recognized by the system.

Drones also use similar identifiers and like any other gadget, they are also prone to hacking. Hence, the identification system needs to be secured. Therefore, Huawei has created a new system for its drones and has patented them.

Hence, this patent only details how the physical identifier and storage method works to read and track information of a drone during its whole life-cycle.

As of now, Huawei is yet to launch a consumer drone. We don’t think the firm will ever release such products. Its UAV business should be mostly for commercial usage only.

Recently, Huawei patented two foldable smartphone designs similar to the Galaxy Z Fold2 and Galaxy Z Flip. Now, another patent by the Chinese telecom giant imagines a complex hinge structure for foldable devices with the clamshell form factor.

This newly spotted foldable smartphone hinge design patent was filed by Huawei Technologies with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) on April 16, 2019. However, it got approved and published only on October 22, 2020. That means this patent is older than the other two foldable designs by the company. 

That said, this particular patent was first unearthed by WindowsUnited. We later confirmed it via Incopat and found its number to be WO2020210987A1.

The document for this patent goes into detail about a complex hinge design. In a nutshell, this design is meant to avoid creases, which is one of the many cons of current-gen foldable handsets. It achieves this by using a modular design. 

With this hinge design, the OLED panel contracts and expands when the phone is shut and opened like on the Motorola razr and razr 5G. In other words, the screen is not completely folded when the device is closed. If implemented, this hinge design can provide a crease-free foldable smartphone experience.

Having said that, Huawei’s diagrams showcase this hinge in a clamshell form factor. Hence, we don’t think the same hinge design can be implemented in foldables that unfold into a tablet.

A few days back, the Chinese telecom giant Huawei launched the HUAWEI Mate40 series as its latest flagship smartphones. These devices could be the last high-end phones from the company in a very long time. However, the firm continues to patent and invest in new technology despite its inability to produce them due to the US ban.

The latest Huawei foldable smartphone design patent was filed by Huawei Technologies with the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Office). It got approved and published on October 23. As usual, LetsGoDigital was first to find it.

This patented design looks identical to 2020’s most popular foldable smartphone – Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. The only major differences between the two are the inclusion of a larger cover display, an inner screen without punch-hole or notch, a vertically-aligned dual-camera setup, and placement of the physical buttons.

In other words, Huawei fixed the biggest con of the Galaxy Z Flip by adding a larger screen to its design. However, this panel is uneven with cursed corners on one side and flat on the other.

Further, the volume rockers sit on the left side, whereas the power button is placed on the right side. There’s also HUAWEI branding etched on the back of the device along with the logo. Also, since the inner display is without any obstructions, it may feature an under-screen camera if Huawei ever plans to use this design.

Having said that, we don’t expect Huawei to launch a clamshell foldable smartphone or any premium smartphones for that matter in near future. It will happen only when the US ban is lifted.

The company has previously released the Mate X and Mate Xs, with both of them featuring an outward folding display. Now, a new patent suggests that the next generation of this lineup might arrive with an inward folding screen, which is similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2.

According to a LetsGoDigital report, the Chinese tech giant filed a patent for the device back in 2019 with the CNIPA, which finally got approved earlier today (25th September 2020) and arrives with 32 product sketches and more. Looking at these images, it is clear that the smartphone features a foldable design and will be a premium grade flagship. It features both a large primary display along with an external screen as well.

The one on the outside acts as the primary display when the device is folded and features a dual punch hole selfie camera on the front. On the other hand, the large display on the back covers the majority of the rear panel, with its hinge mechanism bending inward, which is quite different from what the company has offered so far.  Furthermore, the rear camera system’s design resembles the Huawei P40 Pro+, although, the sensor configurations are a bit different, with a periscopic zoom lens also being found on the back.

The inward folding design with an external display is quite similar to what Samsung has been offering in its foldable smartphones. However, the design isn’t just a simple replication. A very notable aspect is that the device gets thinner when we move away from the primary portion of the device. In other words, when the smartphone is fully unfolded, one can see that the area that houses the camera and all the necessary specs is thicker than the region that just houses the inner and outer displays. Unfortunately, this might be an attempt from Huawei to cover all bases and not something it is actively working on. So stay tuned for more updates.

The new patent was filed with the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration), which was approved and published earlier today (18th September 2020). According to a LetsGoDigital report, the patent carries 24 product images. Looking at these design sketches, the device has a curved edge display on both sides and minimal bezels. Under the display, a selfie shoot is housed, with the rear having a quad camera setup.

The rear camera module is housed in a very unique manner with 3 different variants of the device being patented. One has the rear camera module housed in the middle of the back panel, while the other two have it placed either at the top right or top left, respectively. The four cameras are housed in a cross shaped manner with the LED flash being in the middle. The sensor at the bottom is square shapped, indicating that its a periscopic zoom lens. The company’s branding can also be observed on the bottom.

Unfortunately, finer details regarding this Huawei smartphone or even its name is currently unknown. Furthermore, it is also unclear if the Chinese tech giant is actually working on such a handset or whether it is just covering all bases. We might see these designs make an appearance in a Huawei smartphone in the near future, although, only an official company announcement will confirm it.

Huawei is apparently working on a new futuristic technology that can make everyone’s lives a lot more convenient. The Chinese tech giant has patented a new laser technology that can fully charge devices wirelessly from a distance.

According to a report from PocketNow, the technology doesn’t have an exact name, but it is still an exciting innovation in charging solution. As the smartphone is getting more and more powerful, having a good battery life is becoming a difficult challenge to many OEMs. Through this technology, the issue of carrying around a charger and wires can be ruled out and you can see an example of this working through the video above.

According to Huawei, “one of the biggest challenges to bathing every conference room or coffee shop in invisible charging power has been the safety of the lasers when surrounded by naked eyeballs.” The company is also working to make the technology safe within human proximity as well, with the system being able to detect eyes in the laser’s path, which would prompt the device to shut of the protect the user or their pets in the area.

As depicted in the video, the device allows multiple electronic gadgets to be charged wirelessly at the same time. The charging module is housed on a vantage point overlooking the entire room, which allows it to automatically charge compatible devices. This technology can be used to transmit energy ideally for medium to long distance power transmission for a number of mobile devices, that can include smartphones, laptops, tablets, and even drones. Unfortunately, there is no launch date for this technology, but we hope to hear regarding it soon.

Looking at the patent, a smartphone is described with a penta camera setup. The patent also contains 24 product sketches and was published earlier today (11th September 2020). The overall design of the smartphone is quite futuristic as well.

In the patent, three variants of this smartphone have been detailed. The different iterations have the rear camera module placed in varying spots on the back. One has the 5 camera setup set in the middle, with the other two having it on the top left and top right respectively. Notably, the camera module itself is quite unique with a hexagonal shape on which all 5 cutouts being of a similar size for the image sensors alongside an LED flash.

On the left, the device is completely bare, while the right houses the volume rockers and power button as well. The bottom has a USB Type C charging port flanked by a lone speaker grill while the top features a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microphone. Unfortunately, it is unknown if Huawei is actually planning on developing this device or whether it is just covering all bases.

Huawei is going through difficult times but the company continues to launch new products, at least in its home market where it is stronger than ever before. Also, it keeps on patenting new designs like the recently published smartphone design patent with a secondary display alongside camera module at the back of the phone.

This Huawei patent was unearthed by LetsGoDigital. The Chinese telecom giant applied for it earlier this year but it only got published on August 14 by CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration) after approval.

The concept of this design is about integrating a small display with the camera module. The pictures from the documents only showcase it displaying time but the description mentions other use cases as well.

This is a second such smartphone design by Huawei. The previous model looked like a Mate series device with a better use case of the circular display around the camera. Whereas, this one resembles a P series handset with little information about this secondary display’s use.

As for the design, the phone sports a quad-curved display like the HUAWEI P40 series but without a punch-hole or notch. There’s nothing at the top but the right side houses the power key and volume rockers. Whereas, the bottom features a USB Type-C at the center flanked by speaker grille on either side.

Talking about the secondary display placement, the first design is symmetrical with the display at the center of the device’s back surround by four cameras. Whereas, in the other two designs, the quad-camera module is placed on the top left corner of the handset’s rear panel with the secondary display on top and below.

This design will probably never see the light of the day but it does look intriguing. Personally, I would prefer that Mate series circular display patent to come into life.

A new Huawei patent has recently surfaced online and details a new foldable smartphone, which arrives with a stylus and a sub display. With the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 just being launched a while back, this could be Huawei’s answer as the Mate X2.

Huawei had filed the design patent back in 2019 with the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration), which got approved and published earlier today (14th August 2020). The notable aspect of the foldable smartphone is the fact that it features a stylus and has a sub display right next to the primary screen, which follows an inward folding design.

Looking at the detailed images provided by LetsGoDigital, the bezels around the primary screen are thin, including the one next to the secondary display. This sub display is narrow and long, covering the entire length on the left side, and features two cut outs for a dual front facing camera system. This entire setup is slightly raised, providing space for the stylus as well. On the rear, a quad camera setup can be found.

While the sub display and camera module portion are rather thick, the portion with the flexible display is rather thin. This allows the device to fold right up till the sub display, matching it in overall thickness when folded. Notably, no physical buttons can be observed on the device, which might suggest the functionality of its smaller display. Unfortunately, the patent might just be Huawei’s attempt to cover all bases and they may never really develop such a device, but we would have to wait for an official announcement to know for sure. Huawei has recently filed a patent for an all screen fingerprint unlock technology. This translates to a device that can be unlocked from any and every inch of a smartphone’s display, which means its the epitome of biometric security.

The Chinese tech giant confirmed with Android Authority that it has filed a patent in six markets, including China, Europe, the US, Japan, Korea, and India, and is awaiting approval. In the patent, Huawei has outlined a few potential applications for the technology, such as fingerprint verification for individual applications, through their icons. In other words, you would no longer have to start an app then place your finger on the fingerprint sensor, and can simply touch the app and start it up after scanning.

The company also mentioned that it would be possible to quickly view, enter, and respond through the SMS app without having to unlock your device. Furthermore, users will still have the option to “activate sensors in a chosen area on the screen while deactivating the rest on the screen space.”

This would save power consumption and offer more practical usage as well, since most users typically only use the lower half of the display with their thumbs. Unfortunately, there is no timeline currently available which tells us the time regarding when such a device will be available. Although, it might not be very far away considering concept phones have already appeared with the feature in the past.

It is unclear whether the trademark is for a smartphone or not, but it is similar to the existing lineup of Huawei smartphones. Huawei has been releasing some of the best camera smartphones every year since its partnership with Leica begun. We are half past 2020 but the P40 Pro is still leading the DxOMark Camera chart. The versatile optical zoom camera setup on this handset proves it to be one of the best in the market. Now, as per a patent filed by the company, it has bigger ambitions to continue its lead in the smartphone zoom technology.

The Huawei P40 Pro Plus is currently the only smartphone to offer 10x optical zoom using a periscope lens. The company has further plans to lead in this segment as it patents a design for a unique zoom camera smartphone at European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

Pericope lens offers optical zoom on phones by using lesser space than conventional zoom system. But it still falls behind the traditional zoom technology with larger sensors and lenses.

Huawei aims to fix this by adding support for attachable lenses just like regular cameras. This particular design patent seems to have a triple camera setup consisting of two smaller sensors, an elongated flash module (Xeon?) and a larger sensor which can be used with removable lenses.

Further, the design of the phone is showcased in black color with a textured rear panel for grip. Also, there is a USB Type-C port, a power key, and volume rockers.

That said, Huawei will not be the first to offer an attachable camera lens as Motorola already tried it with its failed Moto Mod. Anyway, it is not sure if this design patent will ever see the light of the day like numerous other patents.

Huawei Technologies filed a new design patent with CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration) back in July 2019, which was published earlier today (16th June 2020). The patent arrives with 10 images that detailed a new Side-Touch camera interface. This new interface includes a shutter button and other necessary functions like flash settings, white balance, camera mode, and more.

This interface can be found on the edges of the curved display on either side. The interface is even capable of zoom control from the side and an HDR icon. Users can also access the gallery from here. The new Side-Touch interface was probably made to incorporate all the necessary functions on the side, providing a non-intrusive and clear view of the frame in front of the user.

However, the MatePad T was spotted receiving a WiFi certification in early April 2020. This certification revealed that 6 models are in the making, with the differences likely being in the memory and networking versions. In other words, WiFi only models, 4G LTE support and even 5G enabled MatePad T models being launched. Furthermore, the tablet is expected to run Android 10 out of the box with EMUI 10 custom skin, and again without the official Google services support.

Unfortunately, finer details like internal specifications are currently unknown regarding the MatePad tab. Although, recently launched Kirin 810 or 820 SoC might be planned for the device. The tablet is meant to be a budget option so it might go for the former, with a single camera on the rear, and front, according to the design patent. A notable inclusion is the dual speaker system, with one speaker grill at the bottom, and one on the top. More information or official teasers from the company should arrive soon, so stay tuned.

Huawei was one of the first smartphone manufacturers to ever release a smartphone with a bendable display. The Chinese company currently launched two foldable smartphones, Mate X and Mate Xs, and might be launching another one soon, this time with a zoom lens as well.

Back in 2019, the Chinese tech giant had applied for a patent, which was finally granted in its home country, China. In the patent, 16 colored product images can be observed that showcase designs with its existing Mate series of foldable handsets. Looking at the images, the upcoming Mate device can be unfolded to reveal a larger tablet size. The device bends inwards, similar to the Galaxy Fold, but features no selfie camera, with most fo the front being covered by the display.

On the rear is where the real difference between previous generations and even the Galaxy Fold can be seen. The patent Mate smartphone has a quad camera module similar to the Mate Xs but also features a zoom lens for magnified shots this time around. The sensors are right next to a smaller secondary display that rounds the corner, acting as an extension of the primary display.

The square camera cutout on the camera module is what gives away the sensor since Huawei has released several models with a zoom lens in a similar manner. The company is expected to launch another foldable smartphone in the second half of 2020, and this might be the device in question. However, it is still too early to tell, and we will have to wait for an official announcement to provide any confirmation.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) recently released data for patent filings in 2019 which shows that Huawei was the top patent filer in the corporate category. Huawei has also at different times bragged about its huge R&D investment. The Chinese tech giant has once again filed a new patent for extendable smartphone design. The patent was filed with the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) and was discovered in WIPO’s global design database.

The sketches which have been rendered by LetsGoDigital shows the phone will adopt a foldable panel just like the Mate X and Mate Xs. However, instead of an in-folding design, the new patented model has a pull-out display design.

Huawei exhibited two different design styles which are described and illustrated by several images. The first model (Model A) has a significantly smaller pull-out display than the Model B. It features a bezel-less design and the flexible screen can be extended from the right side to the rear with a simple swipe of the finger. There is a vertical trim at the back which houses a triple camera setup. There is no indication of a front camera. You may have to just turn the phone over to take self-portraits with the main camera. The extension increases the display area by 30% on the model A.

For the second model, Huawei implements a different type of sliding system. This change sees the triple camera setup located on the left rear side instead of the right side. The flexible display also extends from the left. The extended part will be a lot thinner on the right side considering that the left side houses the rear sensors. With this design, the display area may be increased up to 50% on the second design. However, in terms of practicality, the first design looks better.

We must point out that this isn’t the first of such extendable design that has been patented. Samsung, LG, Xiaomi and even TCL have at different times filed patents for retractable phone design. TCL even showcased a prototype of the first extendable smartphone in the world. Just like foldable design, smartphones with sliding flexible displays may meet with us in the next few years.

Huawei has recently filed a new design patent for a new smart speaker. The patent was filed at the World Intellectual Property Organization on 2nd February 2020, which was finally published on 9th April 2020.

The designs reveal images of a speaker that has an oval design with a top portion that raises. Looking at the images, the front side houses buttons for the power, volume up and down, Bluetooth and a circular button which may be used to change tracks. The USB port can be found on the left for charging and the device may also support a microSD card slot in the same region.

The overall design of the Huawei smart speaker is interesting, and it could also support Celia voice assistant. Notably, this voice assistant was also found in the Huawei P40 series, meaning the speaker could feature other smart features as well. Unfortunately, finer details at this point are unknown, so we can’t provide any concrete statements either.

Furthermore, at the moment, it is also unclear if Huawei will actually launch such a product since its still in the early stages. The Chinese tech giant might just be covering all bases. However, considering the detailed images, the company might have already started work on it. It could also be an affordable smart speaker device from Huawei.

Huawei has yet to launch its flagship series for 2020. Looking at its traditional release cycle, the Mate 40 series and P40 series should be announced later this year. While various leaks and rumors are already making rounds online, the latest one seems to reveal an interesting feature. The Mate 40 could arrive with a special ring sharped touch display on the back.

Last week, Huawei Technologies’ design patent was finally approved by the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office). The patent was initially applied for back in 2019 and was granted on 20th March 2020. The patent contains schematics for nearly 15 products, which includes the unique rear ring touch display. It also arrives with a short description as well. Since the Mate 30 had featured a circular camera module on the back Mate 40 is more likely to receive the technology over the P40.

The small circular touch display on the back can also be seen to display the user interface. Its description showcases different functions like touches, clicks, sliding gestures and more to receive calls, display the name of the caller amongst other functions. The patent images also showcase the ring displays the ability to display notifications from messages as well.

Furthermore, users can touch the display on the back to zoom in and when capturing images and videos. Volume controls are also accessible as well as alarm functions through the smaller secondary display. So in other words, the ring display offers various functionalities and quick access to different features. Although, the added vulnerability for scratches on the back is a drawback worth considering.

The extensive documentation found in the patent suggests that Huawei is already developing the technology behind it. Thus, Huawei Mate 40 and Mate 40 Pro may feature such a multifunctional display. However, this has yet to be confirmed officially, so there is no guarantee. But since the launch period of the series is around September/October, it makes for an interesting predicition which may come true.

The European Patent Office (EPO) has released a patent ranking for 2019. The data released show that the officed received a total of over 181,000 patent applications in 2019. The figure represented an increase of 4% over 2018. Among them, Chinese patent applications increased by 29.2% to 12,247, ranking fourth. The United States, Germany, and Japan make up the top three.

In terms of individual brands, Huawei ranked first among all brands with a total of 3524 patent applications. Samsung and LG ranked second and third with 2,858 and 2817 patents respectively.

In January this year, the State Intellectual Property Office released data saying that in 2019, the number of Chinese invention patent applications was 14.01 million. Out of that massive figure, only 453,000 invention patents were approved. The data also showed that the number of invention patents granted in China in 2019 increased by 4.8% year-on-year, and the number of registered trademarks increased by 27.9% year-on-year.

Also in 2019, the top three domestic companies (excluding Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan) in terms of patent approvals were: Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. (4510 patents), China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (2883 patents), OPPO Guangdong Mobile Communications Co., Ltd. (2614 patents).

Huawei’s rise to the top is hinged on the company’s huge investment in R&D which is reflected in the number of patent applications. The company was reported to have spent $15.3 billion on R&D in 2018. That may have increased by last year but we can’t say if the Chinese giant will whittle down its investments this year in the face of political pressure from the US and the raging Coronavirus epidemic that

In 2019, Huawei launched the Mate X foldable smartphone. It was the first of its kind from the company and had a display that opened and closed outward, unlike Samsung’s Galaxy Fold which folded inward. Now, the Chinese tech giant has applied for a patent that reveals that it’s second foldable smartphone will feature an inward folding display, similar to Samsung.

The patent application was filed in the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and is reportedly for the Mate X2. The device is expected to be released in the third quarter of 2020. According to the illustrations that accompany the patent, a foldable smartphone can be observed which has a design similar to the Mate X but with its display bending inwards.

On the front, dual front facing cameras are present while the rear features a quad camera setup, for a total of six cameras. Based on the schematics, the Huawei Mate X2 will arrive with a pen/stylus and has slightly more pronounced curved edges, unlike the square design of the Mate X. This lead to a sidebar also being provided where the front facing cameras are present which will include a narrow screen that displays notifications and other information like date, time or even weather and battery data.

Unfortunately, the patent application does not reveal any finer details like specifications of the Huawei Mate X2. Although, the company’s latest 7nm Kirin 990 5G SoC is likely to be used since the handset would arrive just before its rumored 5nm Kirin 1020 processor. Currently, the Mate Xs, a refreshed Mate X variant, is slated to receive the Kirin 990 chipset as well. So, we might see the same or a special variant for the Mate X2, but that is unlikely.

A design patent regarding the Huawei Mate 40 Pro has revealed that the smartphone will arrive with a Penta camera set up on the rear. The patent as filed by the Chinese tech giant in Germany and showcases a smartphone that could have a total of eight cameras.

Huawei’s Mate 40 series is an upcoming flagship smartphone lineup from the company which is expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2020. It is possible for no drastic changes are made to the successor of last year’s Mate 30 series in terms of design (circular camera module), but could arrive with the additional imaging sensor. According to the design patents the Mate 40 Pro houses three front facing cameras and five rear facing ones. This adds up to a large total of 8 image sensors in one smartphone body, highest yet.

Penta camera setup isn’t exactly a new never before seen feature but its implementation and adoption in modern flagships are still low. However, Huawei has seemingly filed a patent with DPMA, a German patent agency. The patent reveals a few interesting aspects regarding the flagship, like a design similar to the Mate 30 Pro but with one additional image sensor on the rear, between the four.

Notably, the patent does not reveal the name of the smartphone seen in the designs. So, it is quite likely that it is not the Mate 40 Pro but another offshoot or variant within the same series. However, considering that the patent has appeared this early in the year might suggest that it is still possibly the Mate 40 series. Unfortunately, no official statements or announcements have been made by Huawei, yet.

Huawei continues to build its patent portfolio with one of its latest patent that has just been revealed. The new patent as published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a smartwatch strap design which makes for easy swapping of the watch bands. This design is perhaps building on the popularity of smartwatches and how most owners design to personalize their own with their preferred band design. 

This new design is pretty different from the conventional design we have on almost all smartwatch and other wristwatches in the market presently whereby you’ll need a flat object that can pick out the hook at the edge of the strap. But it builds on the quick release spring mechanism found in most modern smartwatches. According to the patent, the quick release spring can be moved into the watch housing instead of being part of the watch band. Thus, if the watch band is to be removed, all that needs to be done is to depress two small buttons at the side of the housing and this will, in turn, compress the spring holding the band to the housing.

W can’t say if Huawei will eventually utilise this patent is their smartwatch any time soon. But if it does, it will be a simple but interesting design.
