Motorola has announced the Moto G17 Power and Moto G17, two new mid-range smartphones focused on long battery life, capable cameras, and a practical feature set for everyday use. The devices are aimed at users who want reliable performance, solid imaging, and modern software without moving into higher price segments. These devices have debuted alongside the Moto G77 and G67, which we have covered separately.

Performance

Both phones are powered by the MediaTek Helio G81 Extreme processor. The chipset uses an octa-core CPU setup with two Cortex-A75 cores clocked at up to 2.0GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores running at up to 1.7GHz. Graphics are handled by an Arm Mali-G52 MC2 GPU clocked at 820MHz. It is worth noting that the software side is based on Android 15, rather than the latest Android 16.

Memory options include 4GB or 8GB of physical RAM. Motorola’s RAM Boost feature allows users to extend memory using internal storage, offering up to 8GB or 16GB of additional virtual RAM, depending on the variant. Storage options include 128GB and 256GB, with support for microSD cards up to 1TB. This makes the Moto G17 suitable for users who store large photo libraries, videos, or offline content.

Display & Design

The display is a 6.72-inch FHD+ LCD panel with a 20:9 aspect ratio and a 60Hz refresh rate. It is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The large screen size is designed for video streaming, reading, and casual gaming, while maintaining durability for everyday use.

In terms of design, the Moto G17 measures 165.67 x 75.98 x 8.17mm and weighs 189.9g. It carries an IP64 rating for dust resistance and protection against water splashes. Color options include Pantone Bordeaux, Pantone Alaskan Blue, and Pantone Evening Blue.

Cameras

Camera hardware is a major highlight. On the rear, the Moto G17 features a 50MP Sony LYTIA 600 main sensor with an f/1.8 aperture, 0.8µm pixel size, and 1.6µm effective pixels after pixel binning. This is paired with a 5MP ultra-wide camera with an f/1.88 aperture and 0.8µm pixels. A third rear sensor handles ambient light detection and flicker reduction. Camera software includes HDR, Night Vision, Pro Mode, Panorama, Portrait, Live Filter, Watermark, Timer, and Google Lens integration. Video features include standard video recording, time-lapse, and slow motion.

On the front, the phone uses a 32MP selfie camera with an f/2.2 aperture and 0.7µm pixel size. The front camera supports HDR, full HD video recording at 30fps, face retouching, leveling tools, and assistive grid options.

Battery, Connectivity & Security

Battery capacity differs between the two models. The Moto G17 includes a 5200mAh battery, while the Moto G17 Power uses a larger battery. Both support 18W TurboPower charging through a USB Type-C port. The G17 Power, on the other hand, has a larger 6,000mAh battery, paired with 30W TurboPower charging.

Audio features include stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support and a built-in microphone. The phone also retains a 3.5mm headphone jack. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 5.4, Wi-Fi 802.11 a, b, g, n, and ac with support for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, NFC, FM radio, and USB Type-C.

Security features include a fingerprint reader, face unlock, Moto Secure, and ThinkShield protection. Software extras include Hello UX, Moto gestures, and Google Gemini voice control. Location services support GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and QZSS. SIM options include dual nano SIM or single SIM with microSD.

Availability

The Moto G17 Power and Moto G17 are launching in select EMEA markets. The Moto G17 is priced starting at £149.99 in the UK for the 4GB/128GB variant, while the 8GB/128GB model costs €199.99 in Germany. Motorola has yet to reveal the pricing for the Moto G17 Power.

The wait is finally over for global flagship enthusiasts eager for the Honor Magic8 Pro. While the device shares core configurations with its China-only counterpart, targeted adjustments have been made to align with regional regulatory requirements and user demands. For reference, the Chinese version has a high-capacity 7,200 mAh battery and 120 W wired fast charging, whereas the global version has more modest specifications — a trend previously seen in models such as the Vivo X300 Pro. Despite the reduced battery capacity, however, the Honor Magic8 Pro (Global) outperforms the Vivo flagship in terms of real-world battery endurance.

As our OnePlus 15 China vs. Global comparison analysis highlighted, many brands choose to reduce the battery capacity of devices intended for non-Chinese markets, particularly EU-compliant variants, in order to comply with strict regional regulations. This raises two key questions: what modifications have specifically been implemented on the global Honor Magic8 Pro, and what exclusive features does it offer international users? This review summarises weeks of real-world testing to answer these questions.

Band Support & eSIM

Above all, support for 5G bands is the key factor in determining the viability of Chinese flagship smartphones in overseas markets. Fortunately, the Honor Magic8 Pro (Global) supports almost all of the major European 5G bands (Congratulations to European users!). My colleague Paco conducted a field test in the UK and verified stable connectivity and consistent data speeds, even in high-traffic urban areas and remote mountainous areas.

Compatibility testing also confirms support for most North American 5G bands, with only a small number of US carriers excluded from the list. For the majority of users in Europe and North America, this translates to seamless, reliable 5G performance.

The most notable upgrade for global travellers and digital nomads is eSIM support, a feature that was unavailable on the China-only model. The device offers a variety of connectivity options, including dual nano-SIMs, dual eSIMs, or a combination of one nano-SIM and one eSIM. This flexibility allows users to switch between local carriers while travelling internationally without having to swap physical SIM cards, making the Honor Magic8 Pro (Global) one of the most travel-friendly Android flagship phones currently available.

Battery

Next, this review examined the battery life and charging speed of the Magic8 Pro, which has been the subject of much discussion around the world. The China model sets a high benchmark with its 7,200 mAh battery and 120 W wired charging; the global variant, however, has a 7,100 mAh battery and 100 W wired charging. While this appears to be a significant compromise on paper, real-world testing yields a contrasting conclusion.

A standardized battery stress test was conducted, encompassing the following scenarios:

• 1 hour of 1080p YouTube video streaming
• 1 hour of social media browsing and interaction
• 30 minutes of 4K video recording
• 1 hour of 5G web browsing
• 30 minutes of graphics-intensive gaming

Test results demonstrate impressive power efficiency across all scenarios. Heavy users can retain 15–20% battery power by bedtime after a full day of intensive use, while light users can extend a single charge to two complete days. The 100W wired charging still delivers rapid replenishment, charging the battery from 0% to 50% in just 12 minutes and achieving a full charge in less than 30 minutes—sufficient for quick top-ups between daily activities.

Camera System

The global Magic8 Pro has the same camera hardware as its Chinese counterpart, which is a key advantage for photography enthusiasts. However, a critical question remains: does the camera system live up to flagship standards, or is it the ‘least competent’ among top-tier Android devices, as some critics have claimed? This section analyses sample images and real-world performance to provide a definitive answer.

In bright daylight (as the afternoon sun neared sunset), the main sensor provides an exceptional dynamic range, preserving sharp details in overexposed skies and shadowed foregrounds without the need for artificial colour enhancement. Colour reproduction is neutral and true to life, with no oversaturation, making it ideal for landscape, cityscape and travel photography.

The 200MP Super Night Telephoto lens is the undisputed standout component of the camera system. It captures clear, sharp candid shots even in low-light environments, and with CIPA 5.5-level optical image stabilization, it maintains crisp details at 10–30x zoom ratios.

Distant subjects—ranging from pedestrians in crowded squares to intricate building facades—are rendered with minimal noise in low-light telephoto mode. This feature establishes the Magic8 Pro’s competitive edge over many of its counterparts in the telephoto imaging category.

Although the ultra-wide-angle lens is the sole underperforming component, this is not an indication of poor quality. With a focal length of 12 mm, it captures expansive scenes with solid edge sharpness and minimal barrel distortion. However, it lacks the visual impact of the main and telephoto lenses. Nevertheless, it remains a viable option for architectural photography and group portraits.

Camera features are characterized by practicality, with no flashy gimmicks cluttering the interface. Film filters, AI subject tracking, and one-tap AI enhancement simplify the shooting process for novice users, while the dedicated AI button—a feature not available on iPhone devices—enables quick access to camera launch or zoom adjustments, facilitating the capture of spontaneous moments without navigating complex menus.

Compared to flagships from Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo, the Magic8 Pro’s imaging system lacks a distinctive, stylized color profile. For users who prioritize true-to-reality image output over processed, social media-optimized shots, however, this is a significant advantage.

Video Performance

Video performance represents the only shortcoming of the Magic8 Pro’s imaging suite, falling short of its photographic capabilities. Low-light footage exhibits noticeable noise and inconsistent white balance, with color tones fluctuating between warm and cool in mixed-light environments such as restaurants or night markets—a distraction for professional video creators.

On the positive side, the device supports 4K 60fps HDR Vivid recording across all lenses, as well as 4K 120fps slow-motion recording on the main and telephoto lenses. For daytime vlogging or casual video shooting, it meets basic requirements, but it is not a preferred choice for professional video production.

Display

To enhance ergonomics, Honor has slightly reduced the display size of the global variant, but it retains the same curved LTPO OLED panel as the Chinese model, ensuring no compromises in design or visual quality.

The 1.5K resolution strikes an optimal balance between sharpness and power efficiency. In real-world usage, display clarity is nearly indistinguishable from 2K screens, with crisp text rendering and detailed image presentation, and no visible pixelation even at close viewing distances. LTPO technology adjusts the refresh rate dynamically between 1–120Hz based on content type, conserving battery life without sacrificing visual smoothness.

The display’s most prominent selling point is its industry-leading eye-care technology. A combination of 4,320Hz high-frequency PWM dimming and DC-like dimming significantly reduces eye strain caused by screen flicker—a common issue with low-frequency PWM displays. Low-light testing confirms that flicker is nearly imperceptible, making the device far more comfortable to use at night than many competing flagships. Honor has also integrated dedicated features for users with dry eye syndrome, a thoughtful design element that differentiates the device from its peers.

Performance & Software

Under the hood, the Honor Magic8 Pro (Global) is powered by the latest flagship SoC, which is specifically optimized for regional 5G band support. The processing architecture is identical to the Chinese model, and it retains the same advanced cooling system—an essential feature for maintaining performance in extreme climates, ranging from the scorching temperatures of Middle Eastern deserts to the frigid conditions of Northern European winters.

Benchmark tests and gaming trials validate its flagship-level performance credentials. Graphically intensive games such as Genshin Impact run smoothly at a stable 60fps with medium-to-high settings, and even during 2-hour marathon gaming sessions, the device remains cool to the touch, with minimal thermal throttling.

For global consumers, the software represents a major highlight. The core experience of MagicOS 10 is 100% consistent with the Chinese version, with three standout features:

As 2025 wraps up, AnTuTu‘s December performance rankings show which Android flagships are leading the pack right now. Qualcomm and MediaTek‘s latest flagship chips are everywhere, but only a handful of phones are truly pushing maximum performance. These rankings use average benchmark scores from December 1 to December 31, 2025, collected from global markets outside mainland China, all tested on AnTuTu Benchmark V10.

The Red Magic 11 Pro takes first place with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, scoring an average of 4,002,199. It also leads the AnTuTu flagship performance charts in mainland China, with a slightly better score of 4,118,828 points. Its gaming-focused design, active cooling, and aggressive tuning put it ahead of everything else. Second is the iQOO 15, also using the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, with an average score of 3,763,468. The Poco F8 Ultra comes in third at 3,755,870, keeping up Poco’s tradition of delivering flagship performance without the flagship price.

All three top devices run the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, showing just how much Qualcomm controls the flagship performance space this generation. Phones like the Vivo X300 Pro and OPPO Find X9 Pro rank lower despite solid scores because they focus more on camera hardware and photo quality instead of maxing out benchmarks.

AnTuTu bases these rankings on average scores, not peak numbers, so they better reflect real-world sustained performance. Any device with fewer than 1,000 valid benchmark runs gets excluded. Scores can shift based on software version, temperature, and how the phone is being used.

December’s flagship rankings show a quiet month globally with few new releases. Performance leadership comes down to tuning and thermal management more than anything else.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 packs a 4,400mAh battery, much smaller than those from many of its competitors. For example, the Oppo Find N5 packs a 5,600mAh battery. Despite this, the Samsung foldable has outperformed several competitors in the test, which proves that battery optimization matters as much as battery capacity.

Galaxy Z Fold 6 beats several rivals in battery drain test

The test performed by YouTube creator The Tech Chap included a total of six foldable phones:

• Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold (4,650 mAh)
• OnePlus Open (4,805 mAh)
• Honor Magic V3 (5,150 mAh)
• Oppo Find N5 (5,600 mAh)
• Vivo X Fold 3 Pro (5,700 mAh)
• Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 (4,400 mAh)

All the devices were set to 150 nits brightness, connected to Wi-Fi, and tested with benchmarks, YouTube streaming, 4K video recording, and social media browsing one by one to test and compare battery performance in each scenario.

Surprisingly, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 lasted 8 hours and 46 minutes, outperforming phones with much bigger batteries, including:

• OnePlus Open (7 hours, 9 minutes)
• Pixel 9 Pro Fold (7 hours, 33 minutes)
• Honor Magic V3 (7 hours, 43 minutes)

However, it wasn’t the best performer. The Vivo X Fold 3 Pro lasted 9 hours, and the Oppo Find N5 topped the list with 10 hours and 2 minutes of usage. The Z Fold 6 would probably outperform both the Oppo and Vivo devices in the test given it had the same capacity.

Unfortunately, its successor is rumored to equip the same capacity, meaning an improvement in battery life will still be completely dependent on software optimization. The Z Fold 7 will reportedly launch with One UI 7.0.1 instead of One UI 7.1.1, so don’t expect any major improvement over what we get with the recently launched bar flagships.

Recent leaks and reports have revealed that Honor is working on a new Honor 80 Pro smartphone. So far, the only difference between this upcoming device and the Honor 80 Pro, which launched a couple of months ago, is the display type.

Now, the Honor 8 Pro flat-screen variant has appeared on Geekbench, revealing its performance while also confirming some of its specifications.

Going by the details provided by the listing, the Honor 80 Pro Flat-screen bears the model number ANB-AN00. It has an octa-core SoC with 4 Cores at 1.80 GHz, 3 Cores @ 2.50 GHz, and one core at 3.00 GHz. This combined with the motherboard codename “taro”, it is pretty clear that this chipset is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 4nm chipset manufactured by Samsung foundries.

The listing also reveals that the device has 12GB of RAM and runs an Android 12-based operating system. Coming to the benchmark results, the phone has scored 1215 points in the single-core test and 3960 in the multi-core test of Geekbench 5.

A new security flaw with phones using ARM Mali GPUs was found by Google a few days ago. In essence, Google’s Project Zero team discovered a serious kernel-related flaw in all smartphones, including MediaTek and Exynos, which use the Mali GPU. The manufacturer of GPUs, ARM, was allegedly informed of the problem by the brand, and the security flaw was subsequently patched. However, no other Android OEMs, including Google itself has released any security fix for the issue yet.

About five different flaws were found by the Project Zero team’s research, which they submitted to the ARM. Project Zero’s Ian Beer stated in a blog post that “one of these flaws led to kernel memory corruption, one to physical memory addresses being leaked to userspace, and the remaining three lead to a physical page use-after-free condition.” These would give an attacker the ability to read and write physical pages even after the system had received them back.

Three months after ARM corrected these problems, Project Zero discovered that all of the team’s test devices were still prone to the defects. As of Tuesday, no “downstream security bulletins” from Android makers had acknowledged the problems. Beer pointed out that if a hacker could get around Android’s permissions policy and have “wide access” to a user’s data, it would be easy for them to take control of the entire system. By causing the kernel to use the aforementioned physical pages as page tables, the attacker might do this.

A Google representative informed Engadget that the “fix released by ARM is presently undergoing testing for Android and Pixel devices and will be delivered in the next weeks.” To meet future SPL requirements, “Android OEM partners will be obliged to take the patch.” Anyway, it is worth mentioning that the devices powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset are unaffected from this vulnerability.

The government has set up a system for businesses like Google, Facebook and Meta Platform, Amazon.com, travel websites, and food delivery applications that rely on customer evaluations to verify goods and services. Sales and interest from prospective customers are increased by favourable ratings.

But often, the brand displays fake reviews that are consistently positive about the goods and services, and this undoubtedly influences the user’s purchasing choice. Consumers and other industry professionals have criticised some businesses for suppressing bad reviews or accepting fake ratings, which makes the due diligence process for buyers challenging.

According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, the Department of Consumer Affairs established a committee in June to create a framework for identifying fraudulent and misleading reviews in e-commerce.
The founder of LocalCircles, a community platform and pollster that made the initial submission to the Department of Consumer Affairs and participated in the committee drafting the guidelines, Sachin Taparia, stated that the new rules for online reviews are “designed to drive increased transparency for both consumers and brands and promote information accuracy.”

According to Taparia, “the new regulations will force platforms like Google and Facebook to verify the genuine person behind the review by established 6-8 procedures, meaning fraudulent accounts created only for review authoring will eventually disappear or won’t be allowed to review. He further notes that if the standards are made mandatory, businesses may be held liable for unfair business practices, the suppression of bad reviews, or the facilitation of the planting of false reviews.

“This should not be bulldozed, please. We shall first observe that these rules are being followed voluntarily. And should the threat persist, we may make this a requirement “Reporters in New Delhi were warned by Rohit Kumar Singh, secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs. Google has announced that the company will be paying around $1 billion over three years to news publishers for content and to support the launch of a new product, which is dubbed as Google News Showcase.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, claimed that this investment of $1 billion in news publishers is the company’s biggest financial commitment to journalism so far. He added that with the new Google News Showcase, the company is aiming to create a “different kind of online news experience.”

For the new platform, Google has already signed licensing deals with more than 200 publications in select countries. However, the company is planning to add more publishers and will also expand geographically.

The participating publishers will be able to curate and decide how to present their content on the platform. The content is displayed as a “story panel” and publishers can use timelines, bullets, or related articles to tease the story and encourage viewers to click and visit their website to read more. As a part of the program, Google will pay some publishers to make the paywalled articles free to access to non-subscribers.

The tweet by Angus Kai Ho Ng who is the Product Marketing Manager and Global Spokesperson for POCO suggests that the company could be soon launching a phone with a high refresh rate. It appears that the executive will be spilling more information on the mysterious device in the next few days.

Tipster Abhishek Yadav has claimed that the POCO executive deleted the original tweet that mentioned 120Hz refresh rate and AMOLED display. He has also claimed that the new POCO device will debut this month.

HTC has sued Gionee and Meizu in China over alleged patent infringement. The patent being infringed is the concept of a mobile device with a metal chassis, with a specific antenna structure. The invention aims to solve the technical problem of poor radiation signals caused by the shielding of the metal casing, and to design an antenna structure that can be combined with a metal appearance.

If you’re aware of any of HTC’s metal devices, you’ll be familiar with this setup. HTC has been using it since the One M7. Now for the case, HTC claims that Gionee infringed on the patent with the Gionee M6, another full metal device that to be frank, does use the same setup of antennae like the HTC devices. Meizu’s device on the other hand is their M5 Note, another mid-range full metal device.

The Beijing Court of Intellectual Property concluded the two cases did in fact infringe the patent right of the invention. The M6 ​​mobile phone infringed on the invention patent right of “mobile device” No. 201310032515.5, and sentenced the defendants to stop infringement and compensate for economic losses and reasonable expenses.

HTC requested that Meizu compensate 30 million for economic losses. However, even with a lower profit margin and patent contribution, the calculated amount of compensation has clearly exceeded the statutory maximum limit of one million yuan stipulated in the Patent Law.

Therefore, the Beijing Intellectual Property Court, on the basis of the statutory compensation ceiling, determined that Meizu needs to compensate 3 million yuan for economic losses, while Gionee Corporation compensated 2.6 million yuan for economic losses. This, paired with payments for lawyer fees, totals at 6.5 million yuan in terms of total compensation.

Founder of Huawei, Ren Zhengfei, claimed at Davos that he suspects the U.S. will take more actions against the company while Huawei continues to survive. “We got the experience now,” he said during a session at the Winter Davos. “We have poured hundreds of billions of money into our Plan B, and that’s why we can withstand the first wave of U.S. attack.”

The comments by Huawei chief executive and founder Ren Zhengfei to business leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos come amid a bitter court fight in Canada over a US demand to extradite Huawei’s chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou, who is his eldest daughter. Huawei has also been banned from working with American firms on the grounds that it poses a national security threat – an accusation the company has consistently denied.

The same can be true for AI,” Ren stressed.

He also weighs in about the current fear of a split between the tech world due to the ongoing problems between the US and China. “In my opinion, the Chinese government has not even started to think about the consequences of AI development,” he told Davos.

According to Ren, the U.S. is overthinking about China’s sci-tech power. “China’s education is still trying to train engineers instead of scientists, which means China does not have enough basic science research power to compete with the U.S.,” he explained. “There is only one truth. That’s why the tech world will not split,” he said. “Whoever gets the truth will share it with everyone else.”

Canalys reports that after 8 long years of stagnation, the PC market has finally recorded its first full year of growth. According to Canalys, a total of 268.1 million units were shipped globally in 2019, which is a 2.7% over 2018. The top three vendors of vendors this year were Lenovo, HP and Dell who make up the bulk of sales for desktops, notebooks and workstations.

Ishan Dutt, an analyst at Canalys, claims that PCs had a very impressive holiday turnout. “This is impressive given the market registered record growth in Q3. Despite supply chain issues, vendors remain bullish, especially in commercial. Intel’s continued efforts to improve supply will help maintain volume in 2020, but constraints are unlikely to ease quickly. The upshot, however, is the upgrade opportunities OEMs have with SMBs who have delayed refreshes in anticipation of new chipsets.”

Lenovo has shipped 64.8 million units registering an 8.6 per cent growth. This was closely followed by HP that has registered a 4.7 per cent growth. Dell took the third spot with 46.5 million PCs shipped, recording a 5.3 per cent growth this year. Apple took the fourth spot with 19.1 million units and 3.3 per cent annual growth. Acer, at number fifth position, shipped a total of 17 million units, registering an annual decline of 5.3 per cent. Whereas Acer maintained the fifth spot.

“This past year was a wild one in the PC world, which resulted in impressive market growth that ultimately ended seven consecutive years of market contraction,” said IDC program veep Ryan Reith. He said that despite emerging form factors and demand for mobile computing, the bounce was a “clear sign PC demand is still there.” Shipments in three of the four quarters last year were up, IDC added.

Both research houses concurred that businesses fleeing Windows 7 – which has ran out of official support – was the main driver. Mikako Kitagawa, senior principal analyst, described it as “vibrant business demand.” “Contrasted against the ongoing weakness in consumer PC demand, business PC demand has led to unit growth in five of the last seven quarter,” she added.

Jitesh Ubrani, research manager at IDC, sounded a note of caution before the PC vendors get carried away on a way of growth. “Despite the positivity surrounding 2019, the next 12 to 18 months will be challenging for traditional PCs, as the majority of Windows 10 upgrades will be in the rearview mirror and lingering concerns around component shortages and trade negotiations get ironed out.”

While it seems like AMOLED displays are quickly becoming the norm for Chinese smartphone developers when it comes to flagship devices, the good old TFT-LCD still dominates the mid-range and budget markets. It’s very rare to find a cheap device with an AMOLED display, and the sales reflect this as TFT-LCD remains as the most popular choice for smartphones in China.

The latest statistics show that TFT-LCDs still account for 64.3% of China’s smartphone display market, giving it the lion’s share when it comes to shipments. AMOLED screens on the other hand, while definitely growing in popularity, account for less than 20% of the market. We’re definitely going to see this number grow in the future, but for now AMOLED will have to settle for a lower spot.

In manufacturing, foreign investment in electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing, and instrumentation manufacturing increased by 41.2% and 48.2%, respectively. According to a recent report by Nikkei, Japan has begun planning a comprehensive strategy for “post-5G” (6G) technology that achieves communication speeds that are 10 times faster than 5G by 2030. The report claims that China, South Korea, and Finland have also started research and development and investment this segment, but Japan have been surprisingly slow with the adoption of 5G technology, and are hoping to make up with an early push toward 6G.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan will set up a government-civilian research society in January, under the chairmanship of the University of Tokyo Goshinjin, and under the direct supervision of the general affairs minister Takao Sanae. BT and Vodafone are reportedly set to support Huawei’s involvement in the development of the UK’s 5G network. The companies are preparing a letter to be sent to the Prime Minister to lobby him to support the move, saying a ban on Huawei could stunt the growth of the UK’s digital economy. Britain is set to take a final decision on Huawei’s role in building new 5G networks this month.

The government is facing pressure from the US to prohibit Huawei from any involvement with the 5G communications network. British and American security staff reportedly met in London this week to discuss the issue, and the US’s view is that it would be “nothing short of madness” to allow the Chinese firm to work on the project. US security chiefs reportedly handed UK officials a dossier of evidence on Huawei’s alleged vulnerablities in an attempt to get Downing Street to block the company.

Apple often rolls out background software updates to its truly wireless earbuds like the AirPods Pro. Usually, these updates focus on minor bug fixes, but a recent AirPods Pro update appears to have made some notable changes to sound quality and noise cancellation. Following user reports on Reddit and other outlets, RTINGS decided to retest AirPods Pro after updating to firm 2C54. The testing revealed a few notable changes, for better and for worse.

RTINGS tests found the AirPods Pro’s noise canceling capabilities to be worse after firmware update 2C54. But affected customers say the trouble began even earlier with firmware version 2B588, which rolled out in November. According to the audio testing firm however, not everything is really bad. The update also brought some marked improvements to the performance of the AirPods Pro.

One of the biggest improvements, according to RTINGS testing, came to frequency response consistency. This describes the “variations in a headphones’ frequency response due to their fit on your head.” Prior to firmware 2C54, RTINGS described the frequency response consistency of AirPods Pro as “just okay.” The update, however, made things ”significantly better.”

Another significant improvement came to bass accuracy. While RTINGS had already described AirPods Pro bass accuracy as “excellent,” the 2C54 update makes another “fairly significant improvement.” Elsewhere, RTINGS says the update included a “very slight reduction in mid accuracy” as well as a slightly reduction in treble accuracy.

While Apple has not formally acknowledged these complaints from users, it has pulled the the 2C54 for AirPods Pro. This prevents additional users from installing the update, but it doesn’t do much for those users who had already installed it. The update was initially released on December 16 and was pulled shortly after that. Whether this is in acknowledgement of the worse noise cancelling or otherwise, we don’t really know.

Google has always been surprisingly quiet when it comes to user and revenue numbers for Android. Google hasn’t even updated its own dashboard of how many devices are on each version of Android since May, so for months we haven’t had any Android OS adoption figures. So this recent bit of news revealing revenue numbers for Android, Apple’s iOS and other operating systems is pretty interesting.

These numbers were revealed at Huawei Developer Day in a slide from Francisco Jeronimo, Associate VP at IDC. He shared an image showing the revenue distribution among different platforms and Apple has generated 50% of the revenue. Google Play on the other hand manages much smaller 27%, while China wracks a surprisingly large 20% of revenue. No wonder Google’s never released this data before.

Despite this numerical advantage, each iOS user generates $33 for developers and each Android user only $13.2. With this in mind, it comes as no surprise that apps and games tend to still come first to iOS, despite its much smaller user base.

Between this little bit of news, Huawei fighting back to reassert itself in the mobile phone market with the full release of HMS Core 4.0 to the world and the rise of other operating systems like Kai OS, it’s going to be interesting to see how things shape up in the future. We doubt anything will have a significant effect on Apple’s dominance, but everything else could change very soon.

Huawei hopes that this move will assist global developers in making content for their Play Store contender, AppGallery.

HMS Core is a collection of tools that will help prospective app developers produce apps for the Huawei ecosystem. It includes a complete set of open HMS Apps and HMS Core, HMS Capabilities, HMS Connect, as well IDE tools for development and testing. The launch of HMS Core 4.0 is an important milestone for Huawei in building a global ecosystem for themselves.

Huawei has come out with guns blazing when it comes to their HMS Core. According to them, over 1.3 million developers have been signed up so far and over 50,000 apps have been integrated with the HMS Core. The App Gallery also laid claim to 180 billion downloads last year, not a bad number all things considered. With HMS Core 4.0, we can only expect these numbers to go up soon.

The figures are, however, unlikely to trouble Apple and Google, both of which number the content of their respective stores in the millions. For its part, Huawei pointed to the saturation of apps in stores (citing the Google Play Store in particular), and highlighted the difficulty and expense in getting noticed. “We make the alternative market interesting,” a representative said.

The company also presented a new strategy for its consumer devices business over the next few years as it looks to offer a “seamless AI experience”. This new “1+8+N” approach keeps the smartphone (1) at the centre, with related Huawei smart devices such as wearables, tablets and PCs (8) bridging to the wider world of connected products such as televisions, appliances and even cars (N).

So now, how exactly does this update work? Well, once you’ve registered, you’ll receive an update for the device to test out unfinished software. ZTE has not been able to fully recover since after their US ban was lifted. Despite all problems and obstacles however, the company has managed to push forward, even making a break for the 5G smartphone race with the Axon 5G last year. Now, the company is once again looking up to 5G R&D to mount a serious push for a slice of the market, but they’re going to need funding to achieve that.

ZTE said it was looking to raise 11.51 billion yuan ($1.7 billion) from a private placement of A shares, and that it plans to use the proceeds for research and development of 5G networks and working capital. ZTE claims it will issue about 381 million A shares, which are denominated in RMB and traded on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges to ten independent institutional investors in China at CNY30.21 a share.

In a statement, ZTE said the fundraising will enable it to maintain its “high level of investment in research and development, ensure its technological competitive edge and develop its main products and businesses with core advantages”. “It is because of the lock up period which give investors confidence of a stable stock price during the period, and that support the shares from advancing despite the discount,” said Steven Leung, a sales director at UOB Kay Hian in Hong Kong. “Its a vote of confidence to the prospect of 5G and related companies,” Leung added.

ZTE’s Shenzhen-listed shares rose as much as 4% to 38.10 yuan in early trade. Hong Kong-listed stock briefly rose 3.7% to HK$28.05, the highest since March 2018.

It’s certainly an interesting product.

It’s also very useful to check what allergens your pet cat or dog may have. As an example, many dogs are allergic to ivermectin in anthelmintics, and long-term use can cause poisoning. Pets will have different medication reactions, ranging from rashes and edema to shock poisoning. DNA can be used for scientific medicine and dose evaluation for pets to prevent misuse.

The method of use is also relatively simple. There is no need to collect blood or collect saliva, just hold the sampling swab on the pet’s oral buccal mucosa (The inside of the cheek and mouth) and take 8-10 samples. Uah will extract DNA from the samples, perform gene sequencing, and do multiple tests on cats and dogs based on genetic loci and biological genetic algorithms, resulting in a scientific report.

Huawei are currently making a big push towards the 5G industry, but the company also has other interests they’re hoping to pursue, namely assisting in building cars. Rotating Huawei chairman Xu Zhijun, the car is changing along with the needs of the users, and that driverless cars are the future. They’re even drawing inspiration from Tesla in their hopes to achieve this.

“Our ultimate goal is to achieve complete driverlessness, but in the process of moving towards the ultimate goal, it can create value. At present, Tesla is already creating value for everyone” says Xu. When asked about whether Huawei can truly go far in this industry, Xu claims that “If Tesla can do it now, we can all do it.”

It’s important to note however that they company doesn’t want to make their own cars. According to Lu Xiaofeng, general manager of Huawei’s V2X product line, Huawei does not build cars, but will help car companies build good cars through collaboration. They’ll achieve this through contributions in ICT technology and becoming a supplier of smart automotive components in making better cars.

As of right now, Huawei are using their expertise in 5G together with SAIC and China Mobile to build 5G connected cars. These cars have 5G / LTE-V capabilities, support C-ITS assisted driving functions, feature intelligent voice interactions and even have live video calling functions built in. We’re hoping to see Huawei grow in the automotive market, and we can’t wait to see what they bring to the table.

Chinese real estate giant Country Garden Holdings Co. Ltd. opened its first restaurant operated mainly by robots in Guangzhou over the weekend. The restaurant, named Foodom, located in Zhujiang New Town, mainly serves cuisine from Shunde, the hometown of founder Yang Guoqiang.

Robot waiters greet customers at the entrance. Using an AI system, they guide customers to their seats, recommend specials of the day and take orders. Food is delivered to the tables via a conveyor belt. The restaurant uses robots to cook, deliver food, take orders and guide customers.

It is said that the robots are “learning” their skills from the top 10 Shunde chefs, using a computer program to follow every detail such as temperature control, ingredients, and cooking time. The program is repeatedly fine-tuned to reach the precision level required. In the kitchen alone, there are 32 robots preparing and cooking food.

After trying the dishes, famous local chef Lin Chao gave the restaurant the thumbs up. While there is no doubt about the sophisticated technology being used at Foodom, cost may be a deciding factor when it comes to commercial viability.

SoftBank-backed Zume Pizza, which also employs a high degree of automation, has suffered a serious setback due to excessive money burning and lack of continued funding support. Zume shuttered its pizza business and pivoted into food-truck tech and services in November 2019. Then, in January 2020, the company laid off 400 employees to further cut costs.

Country Garden has reportedly spent around 200 million yuan (US$29 million) setting up the new restaurant. One can’t help but wonder how long it would take for it to break even. The top developer, which sold more than 770 billion yuan worth of properties last year, is not worried at all. The deep-pocketed Yang is said to be planning to open 1,000 such robotic restaurants across China within two years, hoping to drive down costs through economies of scale.
