For years, ChatGPT has been criticized for being overly restrictive, especially when it comes to mature topics, sexuality, or adult-oriented conversations. While those guardrails were designed to keep users safe, many adults have complained that the chatbot felt “less useful” or even “less enjoyable” because of them. 

Adult Mode will change that by allowing more open, mature conversations, including erotica and less filtered language, for verified adults. But OpenAI says the biggest challenge isn’t the content itself, it’s making sure minors don’t access it.

Age verification is the real hurdle

Before Adult Mode can go live, OpenAI needs a reliable way to tell whether a user is under 18. Simo stressed that the company’s top priority is accuracy, especially avoiding a situation where adults are mistakenly flagged as teenagers, or worse, minors slip through the system.

Right now, OpenAI is in the early testing phase of its age prediction model. The system uses AI to analyze user behavior and estimate age, rather than relying only on simple “Are you 18?” checkboxes. According to Simo, testing is already underway in select countries to see how well the system identifies teenage users while minimizing false positives for adults.

In some regions, OpenAI may also introduce government ID verification through third-party services, adding an extra layer of protection where required by law.

Opt-in, not automatic

Importantly, Adult Mode won’t be switched on by default. Even after the feature launches, users will need to explicitly opt in and pass the age verification process to unlock it. Teen users, meanwhile, will remain under stricter safety rules and content limitations.

OpenAI says this cautious approach is necessary given the risks involved. Traditional age verification systems have often failed to stop minors from accessing explicit content online, and the company is trying to avoid repeating those mistakes.

Adobe’s VP of Developer Platform, Aubrey Cattell, explained it with a nice metaphor: Adobe supplies the LEGO bricks and instructions through MCP, and ChatGPT figures out which pieces to snap together based on whatever you ask it to do. Because large language models can sometimes misinterpret intent, Adobe says it’s still fine-tuning how these UI elements get generated so that the controls feel intuitive.

If you need advanced tools, precise brushwork, or complex layouts, you can still jump into the full web versions of Photoshop, Acrobat, or Express. But for quick edits, fixes, or lightweight creative tasks, having these capabilities directly inside ChatGPT feels like a major convenience upgrade.

However, it’s worth noting that the feature is still in beta and may be a bit rough around the edges. In my own testing, Photoshop actions did trigger inside ChatGPT (using the prompt “Adobe Photoshop, help me blur the background of this image”), but the edited images never actually appeared.

Once these issues get ironed out, ChatGPT won’t just answer questions or generate images anymore — it will edge into the territory of real, professional creative software for the masses.

The toy, called Kumma, comes from Chinese manufacturer FoloToy and uses OpenAI’s GPT-4o to talk with children. It sounds harmless enough, but a new investigation by US consumer group PIRG for its annual Trouble in Toyland report uncovered some genuinely alarming behavior.

When testers asked the bear about lighting matches, it reportedly responded with step-by-step instructions. It also handled sexually explicit questions with little to no filtering. On top of that, PIRG raised concerns about the toy’s always-listening microphone, suggesting that recordings of children’s voices could be misused — even for things like voice-based fraud.

Once the findings started circulating, especially on Reddit, users immediately labeled it “ChuckyGPT,” comparing the situation to a low-budget horror movie premise. Others speculated the dangerous responses might have come from jailbroken prompts, though there’s no confirmation of that.

OpenAI moved quickly. A spokesperson told PIRG that the company had suspended the developer behind Kumma for violating policy, effectively cutting off the toy’s access to OpenAI’s API.

FoloToy then announced it was halting all product sales while it carries out a full safety audit. “Following the concerns raised in your report, we have temporarily suspended sales of all FoloToy products,” the company said in a statement. For decades, Google’s web crawler set the pace for how information was discovered and indexed. But that dominance is now being challenged by AI-focused crawlers, including those from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta, which are quickly expanding their reach across the open web.

According to new data from Hostinger, OpenAI’s GPT bot has become the most active web crawler in the world. The study analyzed access logs from 5 million hosted websites and found that the GPT bot reached 4.4 million of them—an 88% coverage rate. Google’s crawler came in second, hitting 3.9 million sites, or about 78%.

The trend doesn’t stop there. Other AI-focused crawlers, including Anthropic’s ClaudeBot, Meta’s in-house bots, and even TikTok’s scrapers, collectively generated around 1.4 billion daily requests across the same sample set. In contrast, traditional players like Bing, Apple, and SEO tool Ahrefs were relatively less active.

Hostinger notes that lower coverage doesn’t necessarily mean neglect. Many crawlers rotate their targets to avoid overloading servers, achieving nearly complete coverage over time. Still, the study highlights a clear imbalance in where this activity originates: roughly 80% of all crawler traffic comes from US-based companies, with Chinese bots accounting for around 10% and the rest of the world making up a small fraction.

That concentration raises new questions about who really controls what we see—or what AI systems learn from. As AI models rely increasingly on fresh web data, the firms behind these crawlers are gaining more influence over the content that shapes summaries, search answers, and generative outputs across the internet.

Hostinger has even developed an AI audit tool that allows website owners to decide which AI bots are allowed on their website – and which aren’t. As web crawling continues to evolve, the challenge will be finding a balance between open access, fair use, and sustainability.

The race to index the web is far from over, but it’s clear that Google no longer runs it alone.

The latter quickly became a trend where everyone started converting their selfies into “Ghibli-fied” images for their social media. But, as you may have already noticed, you’re rather lucky if you get it right within the daily limit. While you just have to upload your photo and ask something simple like “make it a Ghibli-style photo” or “Make it Ghibli art”, it often responds with “I wasn’t able to generate the image because the request didn’t follow our content policy”. It also generates totally different images sometimes, and it feels like it’s not willing to generate what you want.

Well, the sudden increase in traffic has put a significant load on the servers, and in the words of CEO Sam Altman, “we are refusing some generations that should be allowed; we are fixing these as fast we can.” Initially, it was meant to be open to ChatGPT’s Plus, Pro, Team, and free users at the same time, but they had to impose some rate limits due to the strong demand. Nonetheless, Altman also mentioned that they are working on making this process more efficient and hope that the wait won’t be too long.

As of writing, I can generate up to three Ghibli-style images per day as a free tear user. It also takes significantly more time than generating an image with a text description. So it looks like this Ghibli-style image generation is much more resource-intensive than standard image generation. As the CEO noted, “Our GPUs are melting.” It’s a great feature to have, and we hope they find ways to make it more efficient soon.

It’s not flawless, though. OpenAI notes quirks like bottom cropping, lingering hallucinations, struggles with non-Latin text, and hiccups beyond 20 objects. But the ability to craft complex, text-rich images through plain English sets GPT-4o apart. Data from QR Code Generator reveals a near 60% jump in global searches for “Gemini” on June 4th, coinciding precisely with the reported downtime of ChatGPT. On average, daily searches for “Gemini” hover around 204,991, but during the ChatGPT outage, that number skyrocketed to 327,058. This suggests that users actively sought alternatives when their go-to chatbot became unavailable.

Interestingly, the rise in Gemini searches mirrored the rise in searches for “ChatGPT down” during the same timeframe, highlighting a clear correlation. Reports from DownDetector indicate that the ChatGPT outage began around 8:00 AM London time on June 4th.

While Gemini emerged as the most popular alternative, other searches like “Microsoft Copilot” and “ChatGPT Alternative” also saw a rise. Daily searches for “Microsoft Copilot” typically average around 11,090, but on June 4th, that number jumped to 16,677, a 50% increase. Similarly, searches for “ChatGPT Alternative” spiked to 11,000 within the first few hours of the outage, compared to a typical daily average of 898. However, it’s important to note that these alternative searches pale in comparison to the surge in Gemini interest.

In fact, upon being questioned whether OpenAI used content from YouTube, the company’s COO hinted that alongside building a tool that can detect AI-generated images they are also working on developing “a content ID system for AI that lets creators understand as they create stuff where it’s going, who’s training on it, being able to opt in and out of training”.

OpenAI launched a new model, GPT-4o, yesterday, which will roll out to the public over the next few weeks. It offers premium features of the GPT-4 along with a refreshed web UI. During the announcement, OpenAI’s CTO Mira Murati demonstrated some of the capabilities of their new model. So let’s take a look.

GPT-4o is more efficient and can listen and see better

According to the company, GPT-4o takes “a step towards much more natural human-computer interaction”. The new model can process text, images, and audio and is able to assist its users based on that. The voice mode now works more seamlessly with faster responses and better understanding. Previously, the voice mode was used to utilize three different models for transcription, intelligence, and text-to-speech output together. Not to mention it causes delays in response. In comparison, the GPT-4o handles all of that natively.

Using the camera on your phone you can now share information with the model and ask questions based on that easily using the voice mode. Reportedly, the new model can respond to voice inputs in 232 milliseconds, which is similar to the response time of us, humans. The model can also respond in a variety of tones matching user preferences. The model is better and faster as compared to GPT-4 Turbo at understanding non-English languages. GPT-4o can now also work as an interpreter.

Notably, the GPT-4o will also be available to the API, so that developers can build and power AI apps using the capabilities of the new model.

While the new model offers the features for free, the premium users will be allowed to use five times the resources as compared to the new model.

The company has also launched a ChatGPT app for Apple’s macOS-based desktops. The app for macOS offers a deeper integration into the platform. OpenAI wants to make it easier for users to integrate the tool into their workflows. With a keyboard shortcut (Option + Space) users will be able to reach the conversation page of the tool easily.

ChatGPT already has access to the web

OpenAI gave ChatGPT access to the internet around one year ago. However, it is limited to paid subscribers who can access real-time information from the web through the chatbot. Otherwise, the ChatGPT integrated version of Microsoft’s Bing web browser can also assist you with information from the web, however, the implementation comes with its own characteristics and limitations and is not quite the same as ChatGPT.

According to Bloomberg, now the company is aiming to take it further with a search feature for ChatGPT which will search the web and present you the latest information with proper citations. OpenAI is actively hiring Google engineers from the search team, however, the exact number of employees that the company has hired is not known yet.

Building an alternative to Google Search is definitely not going to be an easy task. However, it’s also true that the start-up is kind of established at this point with a significantly large user base. OpenAI is also associated with Microsoft which may help with the compute.

Google is aware of the potential challenges and is reportedly taking steps to make its search product more agile and adapt to the changing market. Google’s addition of a generative AI feature to search (the Search Generative Experience) is an example of that. However, just months after revealing his ambitious plans to boost AI development, the CEO shared his concerns regarding the jobs and economy amidst the rise of AI tools during a Brookings Institute panel about AI and geopolitics.

More advanced AI tools may lead to mass job replacement in near future

When Sam Altman was asked about his thoughts on how AI-generated misinformation may affect elections, he shared his concerns about another issue – the future economy. “The thing I’m most worried about right now is, the sort of, the speed and magnitude of the socioeconomic change may have, and what the impacts on what that will be,” the CEO of OpenAI said.

His discussions were centered around how artificial intelligence may lead to mass job replacement and affect the economy. He wonders what could happen if people don’t think about the current situation seriously. According to him, GPT-4 still didn’t pose a significant risk to jobs and it made people think like, “Oh well, we were too worried about that, and that’s not a problem,” he said. “I have a fear that we just won’t take that one seriously enough going forward, and it’s a massive, massive issue.”

According to an International Monetary Fund (IMF) study from earlier this year, advanced AI technologies may impact roughly 60% of jobs in advanced economies. Reportedly, almost half of those jobs can be automated, which may lead to a mass job replacement that Altman talked about.

The capabilities of AI-based image-generation tools have progressed to a stage where individuals could mistake them for non-AI-generated or authentic images. It raises concerns regarding their potential misuse.

OpenAI has already introduced watermarks for DALL-E 3 generated images to maintain transparency about the source and respect authenticity. The company is now developing a new tool that will be able to distinguish real images from the ones that are generated by the company’s image text-based generation model DALL-E.

Generative AI tools from OpenAI will include C2PA metadata

The official OpenAI blog made the announcement stating that they are working on new methods to detect AI-generated content. According to the company, the goal is to help researchers study content authenticity and to join the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity Steering Committee (C2PA), a widely used standard for digital content certification. It will allow creators to tag and certify their content to verify its true origin.

OpenAI says they will also integrate the C2PA metadata for Sora, the company’s video generation model when it launches broadly. For those unaware, Sora is also likely going to be a premium text-to-video generation tool, like DALL-E 3, where only paid subscribers will be able to access it. According to a previous report, Sora will be available to the public within 2024.

OpenAI is building a new tool to detect DALL-E 3-generated content

As mentioned above, OpenAI is also working on a new tool that uses AI to detect DALL-E 3-generated images. More specifically, it predicts the probability of an image being generated by the tool. According to the company, the image can still be detected after the image is compressed, the saturation is tweaked, or even the image is cropped. Not to mention, these tools aim to be more resistant to attempts at removing signals about the origin of content.

The detection tool achieves an accuracy of 98% for images created with DALL-E and more importantly, does not flag non-AI-generated images as AI-generated.

The company has already opened applications to access the new image detection tool to their first group of testers. It includes research labs and research-oriented journalism nonprofits and aims to collect feedback through the Researcher Access Program.

OpenAI is giving users more power over their ChatGPT experience with a recent update focused on data control. Previously, users used to complain about the absence of a mode where their conversation history is private, or non-existent at all. This update, however, addresses not one, but two key features:

• Full Chat History Access: Previously, users who opted out of contributing conversation data to train ChatGPT couldn’t access their chat history. This update lifts that restriction, allowing everyone to review past interactions regardless of their data contribution preference. OpenAI also assures users that their previous data contribution choices remain respected.

• Temporary Chats: For conversations on sensitive topics or where you simply don’t want a record, a new “temporary chat” feature is available. Conversations in this mode are not saved in the chat history, providing a private and ephemeral way to interact with ChatGPT.

Currently, the update is live on the ChatGPT web version, with the mobile app rollout coming soon. This update is a reminder of OpenAI’s commitment to a user-centric approach, offering greater control over chat history, respecting data contribution choices, and introducing features like temporary chats for enhanced privacy.

A new study suggests large language models (LLMs) like GPT-4 may have a future in ophthalmology, but limitations and risks remain. Researchers from Cambridge University tested GPT-4, along with other LLMs, against human ophthalmologists on a mock exam.

GPT-4 answered 60 out of 87 questions correctly in the exam

The results were intriguing. GPT-4 answered 60 out of 87 questions correctly, exceeding the performance of trainee doctors (average: 59.7) and junior doctors (average: 37). However, it fell short of the average score achieved by expert ophthalmologists (66.4). Other LLMs, like PaLM 2 and GPT-3.5, performed less impressively.

While these findings hint at potential benefits, researchers highlight significant risks. The study’s limited question pool raises concerns about generalizability. More importantly, LLMs are prone to “hallucinating,” fabricating information that could lead to misdiagnosis of serious conditions like cataracts or cancer. Additionally, the lack of nuance inherent in LLMs could exacerbate inaccuracies.

The study clearly emphasizes the need for further research and development before LLMs can be considered reliable tools for medical diagnosis. Since there is a lot of risk involved in anything concerning medical diagnoses, we might have to wait for a long time before LLMs are incorporated in mainstream medical situations.
