Android 15’s latest update brings satellite connectivity support at OS level

Google continues the preview phase of Android 15 with the release of Developer Preview 2 (DP2). It builds on the initial preview launch last month, but like its predecessor, the version remains firmly aimed at developers preparing apps for the new operating system. A public beta release is expected in April.

Android 15 Developer Preview 2: What’s New?

The big change in Android 15 DP2 is its support for satellite connectivity at the operating system level. The OS now has UI elements designed into it to ensure a consistent user experience for devices connected to satellites.

Android 15 Satellite Connectivity.

Apps can also detect if a device is using a satellite network and adjust its functionality accordingly. Core messaging services like SMS/MMS and pre-installed RCS apps can also utilize satellite connections for communication.

Additionally, Android 15 DP2 makes handling PDFs within applications easier. Developers can now include rendering for password-protected PDFs, annotations, and in-document search, editing, and selection capabilities.

The PDF renderer updates will come via Google Play system updates and won’t depend on major Android releases. Google also says that the local PDF viewing experience should be faster and use fewer resources in Android 15.

Android 15 Developer Preview 2 Satellite Messaging

The other notable improvements in Developer Preview 2 include a smoother NFC payment experience and refinements in automatic language switching for audio recognition.

Developers also now can customize how their app appears on the smaller cover screen of flip-style foldable phones.  Google says “these screens are too small to be considered as compatible targets for Android apps to run on,” but they’re still giving option to developers.

Moreover, Android 15 can also detect if an app is being recorded to enhance user privacy. For improved audio experiences, Google is introducing a new loudness standard that should mitigate inconsistencies when switching between various audio contents.

Last but not least, there is further customization in the Do Not Disturb mode, allowing users to prioritize specific rules and trigger actions such as a black-and-white display, night mode, and wallpaper dimming.

Microsoft launches its first AI PCs with emphasis on easy repairs

Microsoft has taken the wraps off its latest Surface devices – the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6. While visually reminiscent of their predecessor, these are the company’s first PCs to feature Intel Meteor Lake processors with integrated NPUs for on-device AI features.

Microsoft Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 Launch Price

The new Surface devices are also the first from Microsoft to feature a dedicated Copilot key on the keyboard. And in case the name didn’t say it, Microsoft is targeting these devices primarily for business use, rather than for everyday consumers. Hence, with all the AI upgrades, Microsoft is calling them “the first Surface AI PCs built exclusively for business.”

Microsoft Surface Pro 10 for Business

The biggest upgrade on the Surface Pro 10 internally is the new Intel Core Ultra chipsets — you can choose between Intel Core Ultra 5 135U or Ultra 7 165U options.

They come with a range of LPDDR5X RAM configurations, with the base being 8GB, while the highest-tier variant goes up to 64 GB. Storage options are equally generous, ranging from 256GB to 1TB with detachable Gen4 SSDs for flexibility.

Surface Pro 10 has a familiar design, but upgrades lies inside.

There’s not a size increase in terms of display. You still get a 13-inch IPS touchscreen with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, but it now has a new anti-reflective coating and 33 percent more brightness.

The Surface Pro 10 also has a lightweight design at just 1.94 lbs while it is also Microsoft’s first Intel-powered Surface tablet with optional support for a 5G radio.

Additionally, the tablet’s 1440p front-facing camera now offers a 114-degree field-of-view and supports Windows Studio Effects, including enhanced background blur during video calls, eye contact correction, and auto-framing.

The Surface Pro 10 for Business will be available for pre-order starting today, April (check current year), at a base price of $1,199.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 6 For Business

The Surface Laptop 6 shares the same Intel processor options as the Pro 10 and continues to offer both 13.5-inch and 15-inch IPS display choices.

Memory configurations include up to 64GB of RAM and 1TB SSDs, with pricing ranging from $1,199 up to $2,999.  The NPU brings Intel AI Boost to the Laptop 6, making it a strong contender for AI-related workloads.

The Surface Laptop 6 mostly has the same upgrades as for Surface Pro 10.

The 15-inch model adds an extra USB-C port and a smart card reader. Additionally, the webcam gets a much-needed upgrade in this model, from 720p to 1080p. And like the Pro 10, it also benefits from AI-powered Windows Studio Effects for enhanced video and audio calls.

Beyond these improvements, perhaps the most notable upgrade in both new Surface products is their enhanced repairability. Users can now easily replace components such as the SSD, battery, and even the motherboard, thanks to QR codes on the parts that link to clear, guided tutorials.

OnePlus Nord 2’s latest update is out with fixes for many security vulnerabilities

The OnePlus Nord 2, which launched back in July of 2021 got its final major update last year, which was OxygenOS 13, based on Android 13. That being said, the device has continued to receive regular incremental updates that mend any performance issues, bugs, or security threats to the device. Its latest update carries the latest Android security patch, getting rid of a bunch of vulnerabilities.

The new update for the Nord 2 is dubbed OxygenOS 13 F.51 and brings the March 2024 Android security patch. This patch fixes multiple security flaws, with two major ones that could potentially allow remote code execution, giving attackers unauthorized control of your device.

Other than that, the changelog does not mention any other changes. This update is currently only available to OnePlus Nord 2 users in India. This update is being gradually released, starting with a smaller audience before reaching a broader user base. Consequently, it may take a few days to weeks for the update to become available on all units. To check for the update manually, users can go to Settings > About > Software Update. If users encounter any problems with the new firmware, they can share feedback through the OnePlus Community or Google Dialer.

Here’s how OnePlus Nord CE 4 will differ from OnePlus Ace 3V

Update: OnePlus Ace 3V may release as OnePlus Nord 4 in global markets. While OnePlus Nord CE 4 could be international version of upcoming Oppo K12.

Original Story:

Recently, OnePlus took wraps off a mid-range smartphone dubbed the OnePlus Ace 3V in China. The global version of this product called the OnePlus Nord CE 4 is scheduled to go official on April 1.

Based on the information available so far, the upcoming international variant will be different from its Chinese counterpart. Unfortunately, it won’t be better but rather downgraded.

The OnePlus Nord CE 4 will differ in three key areas. Let’s go through them one by one.

1. Less Powerful Chip

The main highlight of OnnePlus Ace 3V is its Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 SoC. It is the world’s first smartphone to use this chipset.

However, the OnePlus Nord CE 4, the device’s global variant, will house an older and less powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 mobile platform. Although it’s not a bad chip per se, it is surely a downgrade.

That’s because the latest Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 features a more powerful CPU comprising 1 x 2.8GHz Cortex-X4 core, 4 x 2.6GHz Cortex-A720 cores, and 3 x 1.9GHz Cortex-A520 cores. Whereas the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3’s CPU consists of 1 x 2.63GHz Cortex-A715 core, 3 x 2.4GHz Cortex-A715 cores, and 4 x 1.8GHz Cortex-A510 cores.

The plus variant SoC also has a faster GPU and a better ISP.

2. Slower and Lower Storage

The OnePlus Ace 3V arrives with up to 16GB LPDDR5x RAM and 512GB UFS 4.0 storage.

On the other hand, the forthcoming OnePlus Nord CE 4 will be limited to 8GB LPDDR4x RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage.

However, unlike the Ace, the Nord will come with a MicroSD card slot, which can used to expand storage by up to 1TB.

3. Inferior Display

The OnePlsu Ace 3 flaunts a 6.74-inch flat AMOLED display with a resolution of 2772 × 1240 pixels (1.5K), 450 PPI, and a 120Hz refresh rate. This panel supports DC dimming, 2160Hz PWM dimming, and 2150 nits local peak brightness level.

As of writing this article, we don’t know the size of the OnePlus Nord CE 4’s AMOLED display. However, it is known that it will have an FHD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh. Therefore, the screen should be less sharper than the one on Ace 3V.

The next Galaxy Watch might come with an interesting twist

Samsung’s next Galaxy Watch model could feature a microLED display! Samsung is undoubtedly one of the leading manufacturers of top-quality displays globally and the Galaxy S24 Ultra made waves with its special anti-reflective layer on top of gorgeous AMOLED display. Reports now indicate that Samsung might opt for a microLED display in its next generation smartwatch series.

Samsung to offer microLED display in newer Galaxy Watch models

The earlier rumors suggested that Apple would also offer a microLED display in its new Apple Watch Ultra model. Now, the spotlight is on Samsung, but the company has a big problem and that is the smartwatch sales. Samsung sells fewer smartwatches compared to Apple, making offering microLED displays in their watches seem potentially unprofitable decision.

Samsung has previously released televisions with microLED panels and may now be planning to introduce smaller versions of these display panels in the smartwatches, alongside Apple. However, current conditions suggest that Apple might not be ready to incorporate microLED screens into Apple Watches yet, and Samsung could face the same fate.

According to Revegnus, Samsung could unveil a Galaxy Watch model with a microLED screen in 2025. As of now, it’s unclear what steps both Apple and Samsung will take. It was previously claimed that Apple had canceled the orders for microLED screens. As mentioned, it’s currently uncertain what steps both companies will take. However, if they indeed launch a smartwatch with a microLED display, we can expect it to be significantly more expensive than previous smartwatch models.
