The US Files a Lawsuit Against Apple on the Grounds of Ecosystem Lockdown

The US government is joining the European Union in taking a huge bite out of Apple, accusing it of holding an illegal smartphone monopoly over the market. The Justice Department (DOJ), backed by 16 states, filed a lawsuit challenging Apple’s practices that lock down the iPhone ecosystem. The feds claim Apple stifles competition by limiting app functionality, restricting communication between iPhones and Android devices, and hindering third-party smartwatches and digital wallets. This, they argue, keeps users trapped in the iPhone world, inflating prices for consumers and developers.

The US wants Apple to stop using functionality-limiting tactics for the competition

The lawsuit seeks to pull these practices apart, pushing for a more open mobile landscape. They aim to prevent Apple from restricting app distribution that could lead users to switch platforms. Ultimately, they want to stop the company from using tactics that limit functionality on competing devices – breaking Apple’s grip on the app store.

Apple

This David vs. Goliath battle seems to overlook Apple’s immense resources, instead, it emphasizes protecting competition and innovation. It follows similar actions against Google and reflects a renewed focus on regulating tech giants. App developers have long criticized Apple’s control of the iOS marketplace, particularly its app store fees. This lawsuit aligns with a 2020 Congressional report that found Apple holds a monopoly in iOS app distribution.

With Europe already taking steps to regulate Big Tech, this lawsuit is a significant move. The coming months will be crucial as the DOJ fights to create a more open mobile landscape, potentially paving the way for similar US regulations. And a few of these regulations might be enough to force Apple into a tight corner.

Redmi Taunts OnePlus by Teasing Its Upcoming Superior Smartphone Powered by Snapdragon 8 Series SoC

Redmi continues to expand its product lineup. After recently introducing the Display G Pro 27 MiniLED gaming monitor in China, the company isn’t slowing down. Reports suggest new Redmi smartphones are on the horizon. Details about these mysterious phones are limited, but Redmi hinted at their performance through a post on its official Weibo account. They even ridiculed the new OnePlus Ace 3V. Here are the details.

Redmi Challenges OnePlus with Upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Phone

The OnePlus Ace 3V was recently unveiled. It’s meant to be a mid-range phone, so it comes with the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 processor. Xiaomi’s Redmi wasn’t too impressed with that, though. They shared a poster for their own upcoming smartphone, highlighting that it’ll use the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. And they didn’t stop there. The poster has a “8>7” sign and obviously taking a shot at the OnePlus Ace 3V’s processor.

Of course, Redmi has a valid point. The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is undoubtedly a flagship processor, while the 7+ Gen 3 sits in the mid-range category. This translates to a significant performance difference, roughly 20-30% for CPU and 30-40% for GPU. The 8s Gen 3 also boasts superior energy efficiency, AI capabilities, and advancements in other areas.

However performance isn’t the whole story. Redmi is known for its budget-friendly offerings. By criticizing the OnePlus Ace 3V’s processor, they might be hinting at a competitor in a similar price bracket. Remember, the OnePlus Ace 3V starts at around $277 for the base variant (12GB RAM + 256GB storage). While Redmi wouldn’t directly match that price point, a hypothetical Redmi phone with a Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 in the $250-$300 range could be very tempting for budget-conscious buyers, potentially swaying them away from the OnePlus Ace 3V.

Of course there are some claims and leaks circulating. We don’t know the model name yet, but there’s a possibility it could be part of the Redmi K or Note series, or even an entirely new series. Additionally, it’s claimed that its price will be around 1999 yuan (approximately $280). Of course, we’ll have to wait for the official phone unveiling to confirm if these details are accurate.

OnePlus is gearing up to announce the Nord CE 4 in India and global markets on April 1. It is expected to be a rebranded version of the Ace 3V that launched in China just a while ago. However, there will be a few differences between the two. Now, OnePlus’s India branch has revealed the battery charging and display details of the Nord CE 4.

OnePlus Nord CE 4 display and charging speed confirmed

The OnePlus Nord CE 4 will have the same battery charging speed of 100W as the Ace 3V. It is touted to be the fastest-charging Nord phone to date. The charging tech is claimed to deliver a day’s power just in 15 minutes. In terms of display, the upcoming smartphone is confirmed to feature an AMOLED screen bearing an FHD+ resolution. This is a downgrade compared to the 1.5K resolution on the Ace 3V. The Nord CE 4 in the global markets will feature a 120Hz refresh rate.

The OnePlus Nord CE 4 is already confirmed to be powered by a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3. The upcoming Nord phone will be offered in 8GB LPDDR4x RAM and 256GB storage option and we can expect more at launch. The internal hardware is also downgraded compared to the Ace 3V in China which is equipped with the newly announced Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 and the base configuration starts at 12GB LPDDR5x RAM going up to 16GB.

Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 SoC Is Here With On-Device GenAI Capabilities

Qualcomm recently announced the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 processor which is a trimmed-down version of the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Now the American chipmaker has announced a new mid-ranger SoC that joins the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3. The latest one is the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 which arrives as the successor to last year’s Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2. It packs a range of improvements, especially on the AI front. So we can expect devices powered by this chipset to pack AI features.

Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 is here

The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 is still based on TSMC’s 4nm process like its predecessor. It has the same CPU architecture as the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 comprising of a prime core, four performance cores, and three efficiency cores. It’s worth noting that the clock speeds vary and the prime core maxes at 2.8GHz. Qualcomm says that the chipset delivers 15 per cent better CPU, 45 per cent better GPU, and 15 per cent better power efficiency.

The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 is equipped with an integrated X63 5G modem and FastConnect 7800 mobile connectivity system. It is capable of delivering peak download speeds of up to 4.2 Gbps and also supports WiFi-7.

The striking highlight of the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 is its support for on-device generative AI capabilities. The mobile platform supports a wide range of large language models (LLM) such as Baichuan-7B, Llama 2, Gemini Nano, and more. This means that phones powered by the chipset should make virtual assistants better along with more features. There is also multi-language translation and transcription.

The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 has an 18-bit triple cognitive ISP and can capture photos up to 200MP. It comes with features like Snapdragon Low Light Vision. Audio capabilities of this processor include Spatial Audio with head tracking, Snapdragon Sound technology, along with aptX Lossless, LE audio, and more. The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 is capable is capable of supporting up to QHD+ display resolution at a 120Hz refresh rate. It supports up to 24GB LPDDR5x RAM and a UFS 4.0 storage system.

The OnePlus Ace 3V has already debuted with a Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 processor in China.

Next-Gen flagship Snapdragon chip “Pakala” & reference device slip in new Qualcomm video

Qualcomm previously announced that it would launch the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 later this year. The company recently shared an official video on YouTube, and eagle eyed people were able to spot the codename of the upcoming chipset and even the reference device. So let’s have a look.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 Codename, Reference Device Surface in Video

The chipmaking giant shared a new video on YouTube titled “Behind the Silicon: Snapdragon X”. Qualcomm unknowingly confirmed the name of the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, which is dubbed “Pakala”.We get a glimpse of the reference device being used just before the codename was spotted in the video. Unfortunately, this video does not mention anything about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and talks more about the Snapdragon X Elite.

To recall, it was previously believed that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 would carry the codename “Sun” on benchmarking platforms and “Pakala” for the hardware, which was just confirmed. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is a highly anticipated high profile release from Qualcomm in a while now. It isn’t simply an annual release of its top end mobile AP, rather it marks a major chip redesign for the brand. Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is apparently ditching the ARM cores in favor of its proprietary Oryon cores.

Rumors have hinted that this processor could even surpass the Apple A18 Pro chipset. Although, this is still unconfirmed at the moment. Based on what we know so far, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 could also support LPDDR6 memory. The chipset is set to be unveiled in October 2024, so stick around for more updates.

It also offers up to 30% higher power efficiency at peak performance. The phone also equips a 5000mm² stainless steel vapor cooling chamber to help make the demanding situations sustainable. And as a result, it achieves a score of over 1.52 million in AnTuTu.

To power the chip, the phone comes with a reasonable 5500 mAh battery and supports 90W charging. It is reported that this model retains 90% of the battery capacity after 1000 charge cycles. For those unfamiliar, a charge cycle means using the full capacity of the battery and then recharging it to 100%. That means if you use charge the phone once a day from 0-100%, theoretically it will continue to serve that way for the next 3 years and will still have 90% of the 5500 mAh capacity left.

Samsung Galaxy Glasses Design Surfaces in New Patent

We’ve been hearing about Samsung‘s smart glasses for some time now, and the company even trademarked the name “Galaxy Glasses” back in 2023. In a new development, Samsung has now filed a patent with the World Intellectual Property Organization for its smart glasses.

Uncovered by Patently Apple, the patent shows us the possible design of Samsung’s smart glasses along with its charging case.

While the design of the glasses doesn’t stray far from that of regular spectacles, the patent does reveal some technical details about it.

You can see the lenses at their default place, but its left rim has magnetic connection points that will allow the glasses to charge while placed on their cover. The batteries, as you can see in the FIG.6, are located within each temple tip.

Curiously, the patent makes no mention of cameras or sensors – components commonly expected in XR devices. While I’m not sure, this particular patent may focus solely on the physical design. And Samsung might file separate, subsequent patents covering the more complex technical aspects of an invention.

Additionally, the image FIG. 4B in the patent shows the internal configuration of the wearable device while the images FIG. 7B and 7C show the charging case design.

While the patent does offer some insights, it’s too early to say if Samsung will actually launch this product. Not all patented ideas become real products.

We’ll likely need to wait for further leaks or official announcements from Samsung to get a clearer picture.

iPhone 16 series might bring even slimmer bezels thanks to ‘borderless’ technology

BRS stands for Border Reduction Structure. This technology specifically aims to reduce the bottom bezel or the chin of all four models of the iPhone 16 series. Notably, this technology focuses on minimizing the bottom bezel by rolling up copper wires underneath the panel.

Apple

Slightly bigger display for the Pro iPhones

Korean source Sisa Journal notes that Samsung Display, BOE, and LG Display, who will supply panels for the iPhone 16 series, all have acquired the technology. However, the yield rate of the production will be an important factor. An industry official said “The entry barrier to the technology itself is not high, but the volume situation may change for each company once it actually enters mass production.”

Aside from the slimmer bezel, the regular iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will reportedly get the same size and type of panel as last year’s non-Pro models. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus offers a 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch 60 Hz LTPS (Low Temperature Polycrystalline Silico) panel respectively.

However, there might be a slight increase in display size for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. According to market research agency Omdia, the iPhone 16 Pro could have a 6.3-inch display (last year’s model had 6.1″) and the iPhone 16 Pro Max could offer a 6.9-inch display (iPhone 15 Pro Max had a 6.7″ panel). In terms of display technology, these bigger panels will be the same LTPO ones as offered by last year’s Pro models.

If you are expecting the rumored under-display tech (UDC) to hide some of the sensors from the Dynamic Island, keep patience. Kang Min-soo, a senior researcher at Omdia said, “Apple is trying to change the form of the display once again by hiding the camera behind the display or hiding Face ID, but UDC technology continues to be delayed.” He added that it could be delayed even to 2027.

Xiaomi CIVI 4 Pro with Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, 50MP OmniVision Light Fusion 800 primary camera & dual 32MP front cameras launched

Xiaomi has released the CIVI 4 Pro smartphone in its home market today as scheduled. This device is the newest addition to the CIVI lineup, initially designed for the female demographic, but now appealing to a broader audience. Its success is due to its attractive design and powerful premium hardware. Let’s look at what the CIVI 4 Pro has in store.

Xiaomi CIVI 4 Pro

Design & display

The CIVI 4 Pro builds upon the design of the CIVI 3, without making any drastic changes. The back of the device has a round camera island on the back that holds three lenses and an LED flash module. The camera island is surrounded by a textured metal ring that matches the color of the back. When it comes to colors, the CIVI 4 Pro gives you four options (other than the special edition colors): Spring Field Green, Soft Mist Pink, Breeze Blue, and Black. Among them, Spring Field Green stands out with its glossy finish, offering lively spring tones and patterns resembling flowing water, achieved through a unique “colorful gilding” process. The Spring Field Green variant also features a textured back, possibly made of vegan leather.

The sides of the device are flat, with curved ends to make it more comfortable to hold. Up front, it features a slightly curved display that has ultra-narrow bezels, measuring 1.6mm, 1.44mm, and 2.02 mm for the top, sides, and bottom, respectively. The display measures 6.55 inches offering a resolution of 2750 x 1236 pixels, and a 460 PPI pixel density. It offers complete coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut, up to 120Hz refresh rate, and can reach a peak brightness of 3000 nits.

It also supports HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and has a Wet Touch feature that eliminates ghost touches when your display is wet. It also has a pill-shaped cutout that holds two cameras inside. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and has an under-screen touch sensor for easy unlocking. As for audio, the CIVI 4 Pro has a stereo speaker setup. The device has an overall thickness of 7.45mm and weighs 179 grams.

Performance

Under the hood, the CIVI 4 Pro features the newly launched Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 octa-core processor, which is manufactured on TSMC’s 4nm node, offering a peak clock speed of 3.0GHz on its Cortex-X4 prime core. The processor is paired with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage. Xiaomi claims that the device can maintain an average frame rate of 59.4 FPS during a 30-minute run of Genshin Impact. The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 also provides a massive boost to AI-based applications.

The device features a 4700mAh battery that supports 67W fast charging, claiming to fill up the device in 40 minutes. To keep the temperatures under control, the device uses a 4184mm² vapor chamber cooling system. As for software, the device runs on Android 14-based HyperOS.

For connectivity, the phone supports 5G, dual-band WiFi 6, and Bluetooth 5.4 with AAC/LDAC/LHDC support. It also has NFC and Infrared. For navigation, the device offers Beidou, GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, QZSS,
and AGNSS-assisted positioning.

Camera

The camera system is another key area where the brand has made some major improvements. The CIVI 4 Pro has an OIS-stabilized 50MP f/1.63 OmniVision Light Fusion 800 primary sensor behind a Leica Summilux lens. The phone also includes a 50MP Samsung JN1 portrait + telephoto camera with f/1.98 aperture and autofocus. The third camera on the back holds a 12MP Ultra-wide sensor with a 120° field of view and an f/2.2 aperture.

On the front, the device comes with a dual-camera setup, featuring a 32MP main sensor with 78° FOV, f/2.0 aperture, 2X portrait close-up, and autofocus. The second camera has a 32MP ultra-wide sensor with a 100° ultra-wide viewing angle, 4K ultra-clear image quality, AI distortion correction algorithm, f/2.4 aperture, and EIS video anti-shake. All cameras on the device feature Leica’s custom tuning and special Leica photography modes.

Pricing & availability

The Xiaomi CIVI will go on sale on March 21st at 15:30 and will be open for reservation on March 26th at 10:00, with its first sale scheduled for April 1st at 10:00.
