Epic Games Announces the Return of Fortnite to iOS in Europe

Epic Games has made headlines with its announcement that Fortnite is returning to the iOS platform in the European Union (EU), nearly four years after its removal. This is more than just a popular game making a comeback; it’s a landmark event in the world of mobile app distribution.

Epic is distributing the game through the Epic Games store now

This exciting development is a direct result of Apple’s recent adjustments to its App Store policies, influenced by the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). These changes are significant as they allow iPhone users in the EU to download apps from sources other than the Apple App Store, challenging the status quo of app distribution.

Fortnite

Epic Games is seizing this opportunity to reintroduce Fortnite to a market that has been missing the game. By distributing it through the Epic Games Store, Epic is not just expanding its audience but also shaking up the conventional app distribution model.

The implications of Fortnite’s return extend well beyond the borders of the EU. This event hints at a future where the monopoly of major app stores could be broken, leading to a more varied and competitive marketplace. This would be a win for both app developers and users, offering more choices and better value.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has ambitious plans for the Epic Games Store, envisioning it as a top-tier multi-platform store that offers competitive fees and exclusive games like Fortnite. The reintroduction of Fortnite on iOS is a strategic move towards realizing this vision.

While this news is a major victory for Fortnite fans in the EU, it leaves gamers in other regions in anticipation. However, the larger picture suggests that Apple’s policy changes might pave the way for a more open app market globally.

Microsoft is Now a $3 Trillion Company, Second only to Apple

Today, Microsoft had some mixed news to share. On the bright side, they’ve reached a massive milestone, hitting a $3 trillion market value. This is a huge deal, making them the second company to do this after Apple. Their stock price climbed to $404.87 per share, showing strong confidence from investors, thanks to their big moves in AI and new tech.

The company’s huge layoff this morning definitely sent some ripples

But, there’s a challenging side too. As covered earlier today, Microsoft also announced they’re cutting 1,900 jobs in their gaming division. This follows their huge buyout of another big gaming company, Activision Blizzard, for $69 billion. Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, explained this step as a part of their strategy for continued growth and maintaining a balanced budget.

Microsoft

This isn’t new for Microsoft. Last year, they let go of 10,000 workers across various departments, even while their profits were up. Despite these tough decisions, the company’s financial health is strong. They reported a 13% increase in revenue compared to last year, a significant boost.

As Microsoft gears up to announce their full earnings for 2023, they present a picture of a giant at a crossroads. Achieving such a high market value is a big win, but it comes with the hard reality of job cuts. These decisions reflect the complex balance between expanding their business and managing costs effectively.

In the tech world, success and challenge often go hand in hand. Microsoft’s journey is a clear example of this. They’re growing and making more money, but they also have to make some tough calls about their workforce. It’s a delicate balance for such a huge company, trying to keep up with the fast-paced tech market while making sure they’re set up right for the future.

The Yadea Cocoa E-Bike is an Eco-Friendly Alternative for Urban Travelers

Electric bicycles have revolutionized urban mobility, offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional transportation. The Yadea Cocoa e-bike, unveiled at CES 2024, is another fantastic example of this evolution, merging style with practicality in a package that’s hard to ignore. Let’s dive into some more details of this e-bike.

The rear hub motor offers a modest 250 watts of power

Unlike some e-bikes that prioritize power over design, the Yadea Cocoa strikes a balance. It’s not just about getting from point A to B; it’s about enjoying the journey. Its design is a nod to lifestyle commuters who value aesthetics as much as functionality. With its compact, step-through aluminum frame and wide tires, the Cocoa promises a smooth ride across varying cityscapes.

E-bike

Performance-wise, the Cocoa doesn’t aim to break records but to enrich the daily commute. Its rear hub motor, offering a modest 250 watts, propels riders to a comfortable 15 mph. This is coupled with a battery that boasts a 62-mile range, making it ideal for longer urban adventures or a full day’s errands.

A standout feature of the Cocoa is its integration with technology. The 5.5-inch digital display is not just a dashboard; it’s a gateway to a smarter ride. It shows essential data like range and calories burned, and the CO2 savings estimate is a constant reminder of the environmental benefits of choosing an e-bike. Add to this the smartphone integration, and you have a ride that’s as connected as it is convenient.

Practicality hasn’t been overlooked. The Cocoa’s rear luggage rack, capable of holding up to 110 pounds, adds a layer of versatility. Whether it’s grocery shopping, carrying work essentials, or even accommodating a child seat, this e-bike understands the diverse needs of city dwellers.

As of now, Yadea hasn’t released pricing or availability details for the US market, but its showcase at CES indicates an imminent launch. The Yadea Cocoa is more than just an e-bike; it’s a reflection of the changing dynamics of urban travel, where style, technology, and practicality coalesce to create a riding experience that’s both enjoyable and sustainable.

Google is once again revamping its Assistant interface on Android Auto, and this time it extends to voice replies, offering users a refined and polished experience. The new design features a “listening” UI on the bottom bar that replaces app icons, transcribing the user’s speech along the bar. It also overhauls voice replies, displaying them in unused space alongside maps.

Google Assistant Re-Imagined

The updated Google Assistant now greets users with a “Hi, how can I help you?” tag if there’s a moment of silence. As soon as the user starts speaking, the Assistant transcribes the voice commands along the bar. Notably, the replies from the Assistant continue to be read aloud and are not displayed on the screen.

Improved Voice Replies

In addition to the aesthetic overhaul, Google is enhancing the voice reply experience on Android Auto. Voice replies now utilize any unused space on the screen not occupied by maps. The interface includes a “Speak now” prompt in one panel, transcribing the message while providing clear “Cancel” and “Send” buttons. Alongside, the profile picture and name of the recipient, as well as the app icon (e.g., Telegram), are displayed.

AI Auto Reply

Google is aiming high with its generative AI prowess using new AI engines. After bringing the generative AI feature to Chrome, the new features are soon going to enthrall such features in Android Auto. The redesigned Assistant and voice reply features come ahead of Google’s planned support for AI message summaries on Android Auto and more context-aware auto-replies. While a preview video showcased similar design elements, these specific features are not yet live but are anticipated to roll out soon.

Get New Android Auto

The redesign, part of Android Auto version 11.2, enhances the overall experience and aligns with Google’s ongoing improvements to Assistant’s design on various platforms. Users can expect the update to roll out gradually over the next few weeks.

Biometrics Not Enough? Here’s How Apple’s New Feature Secures Your Stolen iPhone

With the iOS 17.3 update, Apple has added many new features to iPhones. Among them, the most notable is the Stolen Device Protection. I know what you’re thinking – iPhones already had a series of security measures for stolen devices. Yes, security is crucial for Apple, so the Stolen Device Protection is a lifesaver in situations where your device is stolen, and the thief somehow gains access to your password. Now, Apple’s Stolen Device Protection feature is live, and here’s how it can help protect your iPhone.

Protect Your iPhone Like Never Before: A Guide to Stolen Device Protection

Smartphones are one of our most personal belongings. We store all our personal data, from basic communication to passwords and financial information, on these devices. In case of theft and potential access to our passwords, everything is at risk. For instance, with Safari, they can access accounts and passwords, and through SMS verification, they can enter our bank accounts. Stolen Device Protection, when enabled, prevents potential disasters by requiring only biometric authentication in such scenarios.

Stolen Device Protection’ adds an extra layer of security beyond biometric features like Face ID and Touch ID. If your info is compromised and someone manages to bypass biometric security to change your Apple ID password, there’s a one-hour window provided by Apple for this change. In case of a stolen iPhone, this security delay aims to stop a thief from making crucial actions. It gives you time to mark your device as lost and secure your Apple account, according to Apple’s explanation of this improvement.

How to turn on Stolen Device Protection mode on iPhone

  • Open Settings on your iPhone.
  • Do one of the following, depending on your iPhone model:
    • Face ID: Tap Face ID & Passcode.
    • Touch ID: Tap Touch ID & Passcode.
  • Enter your device passcode.
  • Scroll down to the Stolen Device Protection section.
  • Tap the toggle switch next to Turn On Protection.

Meta Tightens Safety Measures for Teens on Instagram and Facebook

Meta Platforms is stepping up its game to make Instagram and Facebook safer for teenagers. They’re introducing new features that will shield young users from unwanted messages. This is a big deal because it shows Meta is listening to concerns about the safety of teens online. At least for now.

Meta was formerly accused of knowing that teens were being exposed to harmful content

A few weeks back, Meta, which also owns WhatsApp, decided to keep certain content away from teen users. This decision came after some serious talks with regulators who are really focused on making social media safer for kids. There’s been a lot of worry about harmful stuff teens might see or experience on these apps, and Meta is responding to that.

Meta

The whole thing really picked up steam when a former Meta employee spoke to the U.S. Senate. They claimed that Meta knew about the bad stuff happening to teens on its platforms – like harassment – but wasn’t doing enough to stop it. That really got people’s attention and put the spotlight on Meta to do something about it.

So, what’s changing? For starters, on Instagram, teens will automatically be set up so they can’t get direct messages from people they don’t follow. That’s a big change. Plus, they’ll need their parents to okay any changes to specific settings in the app. This gives both teens and their parents more control over who can reach out to them.

Over on Messenger, the rules are getting tighter too. If you’re under 16 (or under 18 in some places), you’ll only get messages from people you’re actually friends with on Facebook or who are in your phone contacts. And here’s a key point: if you’re over 19, you can’t message teens who don’t follow you back. These new rules aim to make Facebook a safer place for sure, but the degree to which they will be enforced may vary. Only time will tell.
