DSCC forecasts wearable devices to overtake TVs in the MicroLED display market as largest segment

The Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), a research firm specializing in display industry analysis, has released a comprehensive forecast report on the MicroLED market, projecting significant growth and market shifts by 2028. This report outlines the emerging trends and challenges in the MicroLED display sector, highlighting its potential impact on various industries.

Emerging Dominance of MicroLED in Wearables

MicroLED technology is set to revolutionize the display market with its superior attributes compared to conventional LED displays. Known for its energy efficiency, microLED displays significantly reduce the risk of burn-in and promise a longer lifespan. These displays are distinguished by their individual pixel light sources, which enable superior contrast, faster response times, and more vibrant colors. This makes microLED technology particularly suitable for devices where high-quality display performance is essential.

One of the key predictions in DSCC’s report is the expansion of the MicroLED market to $1.46 billion by 2028. This growth is expected to be driven primarily by its adoption in wearable devices like smartwatches, AR glasses, and automotive displays. Wearables, in particular, are poised to benefit from the high brightness and efficiency of microLED displays. The smaller display sizes and lower pixel counts in these devices help mitigate the initial challenges of low production yields that have been a concern for larger displays.

Despite its potential, the MicroLED market faces some hurdles. The slow penetration of AR/VR applications and the risk of delays in anticipated products like Apple’s MicroLED smartwatch have led DSCC to adjust its forecasts slightly. The first MicroLED smartwatch, targeting the high-end market, is expected to launch next year, but the manufacturer remains undisclosed.

Apple is a key player in this evolving market. The company is expected to launch its first Apple Watch (Ultra model) with a microLED screen in the fall of 2025, with mass production beginning in early 2026. Additionally, there are plans to upgrade Apple’s Vision Pro headset from micro-OLED to microLED technology. Samsung also plans to use Micro LED displays in its smartwatches, potentially starting with the “Galaxy Watch Ultra,” aiming to replace OLED technology within a year.

There’s another good news for Apple as DSCC reports that the iPhone 15 series has seen a significant increase in panel shipments, with a 16% growth compared to the iPhone 14 series and 21% compared to the iPhone 13 series. The iPhone 15 Pro models, especially in October, have become increasingly popular, securing a 71% share of total panel shipments. The higher starting price of the iPhone 15 Pro Max and consumer preference for higher-storage variants have driven a 5% increase in the Average Selling Price (ASP) for the iPhone 15 series. Samsung Display remains a major supplier, but LG Display and BOE have also entered the supply chain, contributing to the series’ growing demand.

Google Pixel Watch Now Receiving December Update With New Features

Google has started rolling out December Feature drop updates to the Pixel smartphones. It is said to be the biggest update yet bringing a lot of goodies. The monthly update is also released to Google’s first and second-generation smartwatches running on WearOS 4. The feature drop introduces convenient features as well as bug fixes and performance improvements aimed at making the smartwatch experience better.

December update arrives on the Pixel Watch

Starting with the Pixel Watch, the December update has a version number TWD9.231205.001. It brings ‘Do not Disturb’ and ‘Bedtime modes’ to the device that is already found on the latest-generation smartwatch. This will allow users to sync both modes between Pixel phone and the first-generation Pixel Watch. Additionally, the device also gets new watch faces and complications.

The latest update resolves an issue that caused image retention on the Pixel Watch 2 as reported by some users. It also brings the December security patch for both the first and second-generation models as well as the LTE variants.

Additionally, the December feature drop also introduces the Call Screen feature on the Pixel Watches but is only limited to the US region. It will let users screen calls and respond with quick messages directly from the wrist. Pixel Watch users also gain the ability to unlock their paired smartphone when it is nearby.

The December Feature Drop update is rolling out to the Pixel Watch series in a phased manner. So it might take some time to arrive on your device. Users can still try to force update by heading to Settings > System > System Updates.

Vivo recently held a major launch event to introduce its new premium-mid-range lineup in China called the Vivo S18 series. Alongside the Vivo S18 and S18 Pro smartphones, the brand has also launched the Vivo S18e, a feature-packed, yet affordable alternative, compared to its premium siblings.

Vivo S18e specs:

Compared to the S18, and S18 Pro, the S18e has a distinct design language, opting for a circular camera module with a flat body and flat sides. The front features a punch-hole display flanked by reasonably sized bezels. Overall, the device is on the slimmer side, measuring 7.69mm, and weighing around 193 grams. It comes with IP54 water and dust resistance.

The Vivo S18e boasts a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 processor that supports 5G connectivity. It comes in a single LPDDR4X 12GB RAM option, along with two UFS 2.2 memory options: 256GB and 512GB.

Running on the Android 14-based OriginOS 4 software, the Vivo S18e promises a user-friendly interface. Its 4800mAh battery is complemented by an 80W flash charging capability The device features a Type-C interface for both charging and headphone connectivity.

The 6.67-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2400×1080 provides vibrant visuals, paired with a 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 1800 nits. The front camera, featuring 16MP, ensures clear selfies, while the rear camera setup includes an OIS-enabled 50MP main lens and a 2MP blur lens for versatile photography options.

Additional features include NFC support for convenient wireless transactions and multiple unlocking methods such as facial recognition and in-screen fingerprints.

Vivo S18e pricing & availability

The Vivo S18e comes in three color options: Starry Night Black, Xuaguang Purple, and Cloud Shabai. The 12GB RAM + 256GB storage config has a price tag of 2,099 yuan ($296), whereas the 12GB RAM + 512GB storage option costs 2,299 yuan ($325). The smartphone will go on sale starting January 13, 2024, along with the Vivo S18 Pro.

The Vivo S18 series has just been announced in the brand’s home market of China. The new lineup consists of the Vivo S18, S18 Pro, and S18e. So now, let’s have a look at the specifications, features, and more regarding the base S18 and the higher end S18 Pro models.

Vivo S18 & Vivo S18 Pro: Design and Display

With the new S18 models, Vivo is refreshing the design of its S series of smartphones. The rear retains a rectangular camera module for both the S18 and S18 Pro but the image sensor alignment is different than before. There are two modules in the back with the top half featuring the cameras, while the bottom housing a twin LED lighting setup. This includes a regular dual tone flash in the module and the second is a larger soft LED lighting that runs along the border of the bottom half similar to a ring light.

The back also seems to have a feather-like pattern on the rear panel with a plastic middle frame. Both models also feature a thin and light body that measures just 7.45mm in thickness and weighs 185.8 grams in weight (187.8 grams for the Pro). Meanwhile, the front on both devices sports a tall 6.78-inch curved OLED display that offers Full HD+ resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and 2800 nits of peak brightness. The panel also houses a center aligned punch hole cutout for the S18 and S18 Pro.

Specifications and Camera

Vivo recently revealed the chipsets of the entire S18 series. Under the hood, the Vivo S18 is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 SoC, while the S18 Pro features the MediaTek Dimensity 9200+ chipset. These processors will be paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. It is worth noting that the Pro features LPDDR5X RAM and the vanilla version comes with LPDDR4X memory. The Vivo S18 and S18 Pro will also run on the Android 14 OS based OriginOS 4 custom skin out of the box.

Notably, the S18 lineup supports up to 16GB of virtual RAM expansion as well as 50GB of storage compression. A large 5,000mAh battery pack that powers the S18 and S18 Pro models, which supports 80W fast charging. As per official claims, the devices can last for up to 13.5 hours on a single full charge, with the cells having a 4 year life. The company has also promised free 4 years of battery replacement as well. Other notable features include Bluetooth 5.4/Bluetooth 5.3, in-display fingerprint scanner, various audio codecs support, facial recognition, and more.

For photography, the Vivo S18 Pro houses a 50-megapixel Sony IMX920 primary sensor, a 50-megapixel Samsung JNI ultra wide angle lens, and a 12-megapixel IMX663 telephoto shooter that offers 2x optical zoom. To recall, this is the primary sensor is the same as the one that is equipped on the flagship Vivo X100. On the other hand, the base S18 offers a 50-megapixel main camera paired with an 8-megapixel ultra wide angle shooter. Meanwhile, the front has a 50-megapixel selfie shooter.

Pricing and Availability

The search giant is also bringing Quick Phrases to the Pixel Buds Pro. The feature was first introduced on the Pixel 6 series phones. For those unaware, it eliminates the need to say ‘Hey Google’ to trigger the voice assistant.

Google Pixel Buds Pro get Quick Phrases

Google announced on the Assistant Help Page that it is launching the Quick Phrases feature on the Pixel Buds Pro. Users won’t have to wake up the Assistant by saying ‘Hey Google’ first. Unfortunately, the feature is only limited for incoming calls. Users can say ‘answer’, ‘silence’, and ‘decline’ on the Pixel Buds Pro. The Google Assistant will then perform the task based on the user’s preference.

Google says that it is working on expanding the quick phrases to other assistant capabilities that are currently available on the Pixel 6 and later. However, it remains to be seen what and when these phrases will arrive on the Pixel Buds Pro. We should likely expect the option to control music, set alarms, or send messages in the future. It’s also unclear if the quick phrases released on the Pixel Buds Pro are also available on the Pixel Buds A-series.

Quick Phrases are offered in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. To enable the feature for incoming calls, users need to head to Google Assistant settings on their phone, tap on Quick Phrases, and enable the toggle for incoming calls.

Xiaomi introduced HyperOS during the launch of the Xiaomi 14 series. Since then, they have been testing updates for HyperOS in China and globally, a topic we’ve consistently covered. Now, the new list provides a clearer idea of which devices will receive the update in the future.

In November, Xiaomi made the Redmi 13C official. The device made its initial debut in Nigeria. Following that, the company has been slowly rolling out this product in other markets.

Last week, the handset was announced in India alongside Redmi 13C 5G. Now, it has made its way to Europe as well. Let’s go through the details.

The Redmi 13C arrives in Europe in three memory configurations. It can be availed in either 4GB + 128GB, 6GB + 128GB, or 8GB + 25GB versions. The base variant starts at €149.90.

As far as specs are concerned, the version released in Europe is the same as the model sold elsewhere. It also comes in the identical color options, namely Midnight Black, Navy Blue, Glacier White, and Clover Green.

The phone is built around a 6.74-inch display with a dewdrop notch and Corning Gorilla Glass protection. This LCD panel offers a resolution of 1600 x 720 pixels (HD+), 90Hz refresh rate, and 600 nits peak brightness level.

It is powered by a MediaTek Helio G85 chipset paired with LPDDR4x RAM and eMMC 5.1 storage. As for software, it ships with MIUI 14 based on Android 13.

For photography and videography, the smartphone uses a 50MP rear camera, which is paired with a 2MP macro snapper and an unspecified third sensor. On the front, it has an 8MP shooter inside the notch.

Samsung’s new Galaxy Book 4 laptop lineup is set to launch tomorrow. But a Korean website has spilled the beans early, revealing all the details about the Galaxy Book 4 series, including their price and features. So, let’s dive into the details in this article.

As expected, the Galaxy Book 4 series consists of three models: the Pro, the Pro 360 (convertible), and the top-of-the-line Ultra model. All these laptops feature a 3K AMOLED touchscreen with 120Hz refresh rate and anti-glare coating. And, in terms of screen size, the 360 and Ultra models come with a generous 16-inch display, while the Pro offers both 14-inch and 16-inch options.

Samsung is expected to equip its next generation of flagship smartphones with the Exynos 2400 SoC. The chipset is the company’s latest high end processor, and now, a tipster is claiming that it could surpass the iPhone 15 Pro Max‘s Apple A17 Pro chip.

The information arrives from known tipster Revegnus on X (formerly Twitter). In the tweet, a short summary of the Exynos 2400 SoC was shared. Here, he stated that the upcoming Samsung chipset features a GPU that was co-designed with AMD, which is capable of outperforming the GPU performance of the Apple A17 Pro. To recall, the A17 Pro is the 3nm chipset that powers the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which managed to score over 590,000 points in the AnTuTu benchmarking platform‘s graphics test thanks to its 6-core GPU.

In other words, the Exynos 2400 could potentially surpass this score. Revegnus further adds that the Exynos 2400 will be based on Samsung’s enhanced 4nm process and not the 3nm process. The company is sticking to the 4nm node over increased yields and improved performance as it has more “expertise” in this process. The Exynos 2400 will also have the first application of FOWLP, which basically implies reduced chip thickness and improved heat dissipation.

During the recent SLSI Tech Day event, Samsung unveiled certain key details regarding the upcoming Exynos 2400. The brand claims that the processor will offer 70 percent faster CPU performance along with 14.7 times faster AI processing speeds when compared to the Exynos 2200. Yesterday, Xiaomi revealed that it will launch the Redmi Note 13 series in India on January 4. Today, the company has confirmed that it will be bringing the Redmi Note 13 Pro Plus to the country.

For the unaware, this is the best Redmi Note Xiaomi has ever produced in terms of specs. It comes with several premium premium features, which we discussed soon after its debut in China.

The company has set up a dedicated teaser page on its Indian website to reveal the features in a gradual manner in the coming days. However, since the phone is already official and on sale in China for months, we know everything about it.

Redmi Note 13 Pro Plus Specifications

The Redmi Note 13 Pro Plus (review) flaunts a 6.67-inch curved OLED display with a centered punch-hole display. The 10-bit panel supports 1.5K resolution (2712 x 1220 pixels), 120Hz refresh rate, 1920Hz PWM dimming, 1800 nits peak brightness, and Dolby Vision.

The handset is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Ultra chip paired with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. On the software front, It boots MIUI 14 based on Android 13.

It houses a triple camera system on the rear comprising a 200MP Samsung ISOCELL HP3 primary sensor, an 8MP ultrawide unit, and a 2MP macro snapper. On the front, it has a 16MP shooter.

Other features of the device include an in-screen fingerprint sensor, dual stereo speakers, IR blaster, and IP68 rating (dust and water resistant). Finally, it draws energy from a 5,000mAh battery with support for 120W charging.
