Pixel 8 Pro receives its first AI Core update

Google is pushing a first-of-its-kind update to the Google Pixel 8 Pro. It updates the AI Core app that powers on-device AI features. This AI Core app operates quietly in the background to process some of the AI-driven functionalities directly on the device instead of relying on the cloud servers and internet connection.

An enhancement in on-device AI capabilities

Pixel-8-Pro

According to a Google Play Store listing that showed up earlier, “AI Core powers features across Android and provides apps with the latest Al models” However, the Play Store listing has been taken down. Probably Google plans for a separate announcement for this addition.

While the average user may not directly interact with AI Core, it plays a pivotal role in enhancing the overall user experience on the Pixel 8 Pro. The recent update, taking the app from version 0.release.539035001 to 0.release.582652206, is specifically tailored for the Pixel 8 Pro (codenamed “husky”). Pixel phones and tablets have included a placeholder for AI Core since the initial Android 14 update.

If you are using the Pixel 8 Pro, the update should have already been downloaded automatically on your phone and serving its job. Currently, this update is reported exclusive to the Pixel 8 Pro. However, it’s expected to make its way to the Pixel 8 if not to the older pixel devices with Tensor chips in the near future.

Some notable applications of the latest foundation models might include the implementation of features like ‘Zoom Enhance’ or making Magic Eraser work more swiftly. Notably, Samsung has also confirmed the addition of these kinds of capabilities to its upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S24 series, referring to it as an ‘AI Phone.’

Hyundai’s 2024 Kona Electric Boasts a Slightly Larger Battery than its Predecessor

Hyundai‘s latest launch, the 2024 Kona Electric, stands out with its blend of enhanced features and practical improvements. This new model, set to arrive in the United States by late fall, brings subtle yet significant upgrades to its predecessor, the 2023 Kona Electric.

The electric car has a 64.8-kilowatt-hour battery.

The 2024 Kona Electric showcases a slightly larger 64.8-kilowatt-hour battery, a minor but meaningful increase from the previous 64 kWh capacity. This enhancement results in a modest boost in range, offering 261 miles on a single charge according to EPA estimates. This increase, though seemingly small, indicates Hyundai’s commitment to incremental progress in EV technology.

Hyundai

However, it’s not just about longer distances. The new Kona Electric also introduces improvements in efficiency, although it’s marginally less energy-efficient than its predecessor. With an energy consumption rate of 116 MPGe, or about 291 watt-hours per mile, it’s a slight uptick in energy use. This could be attributed to the vehicle’s larger dimensions, including a longer wheelbase and increased width, potentially affecting aerodynamics.

Charging time sees a substantial improvement, thanks to a more powerful 10.8-kW on-board charger, reducing full charging time by about three hours. Additionally, DC fast charging is faster, taking 43 minutes to reach 80% charge.

The 2024 model introduces new features like the i-Pedal mode for one-pedal driving and a Smart Regenerative System that adapts to traffic conditions. These innovations, along with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, highlight Hyundai’s focus on enhancing the driver experience in electric mobility.

While pricing remains unannounced, it’s expected to be in line with the outgoing model, making it a competitive option in the EV market. However, the lack of eligibility for the $7,500 federal tax credit for imported EVs is a notable drawback. But with the discontinuation of Chevrolet Bolt EV, the Kona Electric has an opportunity to capture a significant portion of the entry-level EV segment.

Tesla Might Unveil a Hidden “Beast Mode” with the Cybertruck Launch tomorrow

As Tesla‘s Cybertruck nears its delivery event, new details are emerging, painting a clearer picture of what to expect from this much-awaited vehicle. Notably, a software developer’s recent findings have shed light on its unique ‘Beast Mode’ feature and differences in trim levels, adding to the excitement surrounding Tesla’s latest offering.

The Beast mode will allow the EV to go from 0 to 60mph in less than 3 seconds

Beast Mode, a feature set to enhance the Cybertruck‘s performance, seems akin to the Ludicrous Mode found in other Tesla models. An animation from Tesla’s app suggests that engaging Beast Mode will simulate a high-speed experience, hinting at a significant boost in power and speed. This aligns with Elon Musk‘s claim on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast that the Cybertruck can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 3 seconds when Beast Mode is activated.

Tesla Cybertruck

The Cybertruck will be available in two trims: Base and Luxury. The Base model is expected to feature smaller wheels, while the Luxury variant could sport larger ones with stylish black covers reminiscent of the 2019 concept vehicle. The variability in wheel and tire options, as seen in different prototypes, indicates a range of customization choices for buyers.

Both trims seem compatible with a sleek Hella lightbar, previously spotted on a Cybertruck in Mexico. This accessory could enhance the vehicle’s visual appeal and functionality, especially for off-road enthusiasts.

While these details, extracted from the Tesla app, aren’t officially confirmed, they provide a glimpse into what Tesla may offer. Given the imminent truck deliveries and the specific app version referenced, there’s a good chance these features will be part of the final product. However, as with all leaks and early information, a degree of skepticism is warranted until official announcements are made.

China is Trying to go Toe-to-Toe with South Korea, the US in Advanced Chip Development

As per recent news, China has taken a significant leap forward with the development of its first advanced mobile memory chip, marking a critical step in its technological rivalry with South Korea and the United States. This achievement by ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) demonstrates China’s revitalized growth in the semiconductor industry.

The launch of the first advanced mobile memory chip is a testament

CXMT’s introduction of the lower power Double Data Rate 5 (LPDDR5) dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip is a notable development in the field of mobile technology. This type of memory chip, crucial for electronic devices such as smartphones and laptops, was initially pioneered by South Korea’s Samsung Electronics in 2018. China’s successful production of this chip is particularly remarkable given the increased US sanctions aimed at hindering its advancement in high-tech manufacturing.

China chip

This breakthrough is not just about technological prowess; it’s a strategic move for China to reduce its reliance on imported technology, a significant step towards self-reliance in a critical sector. The validation of these chips by prominent Chinese smartphone manufacturers like Xiaomi and Transsion underscores the practical application and market readiness of this technology.

Moreover, this achievement comes amidst a challenging environment where China faces restrictions in accessing high-end lithography systems from international suppliers. Despite these hurdles, the country has shown steady progress in semiconductor development and manufacturing technologies. The launch of Huawei Technologies’ Mate 60 Pro smartphone, powered by a locally made advanced chip, further illustrates China’s capabilities in this domain.

CXMT’s new memory chip not only offers a 50% improvement in data transfer speed and capacity but also a 30% reduction in power consumption compared to its previous versions. This advancement is set to enhance China’s position in the competitive mobile devices market.

Apple Reportedly Parts Ways With Goldman Sachs But May Still Continue To Offer Financial Products

Apple forayed into the world of finance way back in 2019. The company introduced its own credit card and high-yield savings account services in partnership with American investment banking behemoth Goldman Sachs. Both companies had reportedly extended their contracts seeing them through 2029. However, things between the two haven’t been going well lately. Now, a new report reveals that Apple is pulling out of the partnership with Goldman Sachs.

Apple pulls the plug with Goldman Sachs

The Wall Street Journal citing people familiar with the matter reported that Apple sent a proposal to the investment bank to dissolve its partnership within 12 to 15 months. The transition will be happening over the aforementioned time period and the termination is said to cover their complete consumer partnership including the savings account service which was introduced earlier this year.

As of now, it remains unclear which banking institution will partner with Apple next. WSJ had previously reported that Goldman Sachs was in talks with American Express regarding the prospects of them taking over the Apple Card program. As per reports, the banking firm suffered losses mainly attributed to the Apple Card.

Apple also confirmed to Reuters that Apple Card has seen a great response and they will continue to innovate and deliver the best tools and services for them. This also suggests that the Cupertino-based tech giant’s banking services will continue to exist. The Apple Card that is offered in both digital and physical versions is available in select countries. The company also offers a high-yield savings account and BNPL scheme.
