From Dependency to Independence: China’s Pursuit of Homegrown HBM Technology

Artificial intelligence technologies are gaining popularity with each passing day. For this reason, tech companies from around the world are working to develop their own AI models and benefit from the popularity of ChatGPT. Additionally, these companies all have something in common: they all purchase the necessary components for developing their AI from US companies like NVIDIA. However, China is preparing to change this situation by producing its own High Bandwidth Memory (HBM). Here are the details…

Can China Break the US High Bandwidth Memory Chip Monopoly? The Long Odds and High Stakes

The technology war between China and the United States continues at full speed. Despite their mutual dependency, both countries are striving to outpace each other and maintain superiority. This is also true in the area of artificial intelligence chips. One of the critical components for this technology is high bandwidth memory chips. HBM allow for high-speed data transfer, making them indispensable for sectors that demand rapid processing, such as autonomous vehicles, AI-driven analytics, and more.

China’s top DRAM maker, ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), is actively exploring avenues for producing HBM chips. However, experts speculate that it may take up to four years for CXMT to bring HBMs to the market. One of the significant obstacles CXMT faces is the U.S. sanctions on China’s tech companies.

These restrictions have forced Chinese chip makers to resort to less advanced technologies for producing DRAM chips. Despite the challenges, industry insiders suggest that China may be able to produce HBM chips without using cutting-edge lithography technologies such as extreme ultraviolet tools.

The demand for HBM chips is expected to grow by almost 60% in 2023. Breaking into this market would not only lessen China’s dependency on foreign suppliers but also offer a considerable stake in a rapidly growing market. The move would be a significant milestone in China’s broader tech and economic strategies, helping to insulate it from geopolitical tensions and contribute to its goal of becoming a global tech leader.

Older smartphones are known to reach the end of their software support. Xiaomi updates its official EOS (End of Support) list every now and then to let users know regarding the support for their handsets.

Just a few days back, the company halted the software support for Redmi Note 9 and two more devices. Now, the firm has updated the list with four new phones.

The last batch only included budget models. But the new one also consists of a mid-ranger.

Redmi 9 Prime Sunrise Flare Featured

According to Xiaomiui, Xiaomi will no longer offer new OTA system updates for the following smartphones.

Whereas, the Redmi K30 Ultra and the Poco M2 Pro are on the latest MIUI 14. However, their Android version is 12, which is a gen behind. Both of them were released with Android 10, however, the Poco device debuted with MIUI 11 compared to MIUI 12 on the Redmi.

Finally, the Redmi 9 Prime also boots on Android 12. But the software is MIUI 13. It was launched with Android 10-based MIUI 11.

Anyway, these handsets will continue to work normally as they have been. Users will not face any compatibility issues with most-used apps.

The HDR listing does not reveal anything but does confirm the presence of HDR10+ support for its display. It also confirms the nearing launch, as within a span of a week, it is certified by three public certifications.

Previous leaks suggest it would bundle a 35W fast-charging support. It could be the first Honor smartphone that will have an outward foldable design. Other specifics about the device are not present yet.

Premium Huawei tablet with Kirin 9 series chip in the works

The newly launched Huawei Mate 60 and Huawei Mate 60 Pro are powered by Kirin 9000s SoC. These are the first devices to house this chip.

According to a reliable leaker, Huawei has plans for more devices using the chipsets from this series. One of them will be a flagship tablet.

Huawei MatePad Pro 11

Prolific tipster Digital Chat Station claims that the upcoming premium Huawei MatePad tablet is being tested with the new 9 series Kirin chip. He does not know the exact model number as it is masked.

He mentions that it is just the beginning as more Kirin-powered Huawei products are on the horizon. We are looking forward to learning more about them in the coming weeks.

The interesting bit about the latest Kirin 9000s chipset is that it supports 5G connectivity. This chip is said to be based on indigenous 5G tech as Huawei is banned from using US-based 5G tech.

As per benchmarks, the SoC is comparable to two generations-old Qualcomm Snapdragon 888. So it is not that fast but more than enough for day-to-day activities and heavy tasks.

This forthcoming premium tablet could be a Huawei MatePad Pro model. Since the pro tablet now comes in 11-inch and 12.6-inch versions, it could be either of the two or even a new size.
