Sony’s new HT-AX7 sound system with detachable surround speakers launched

Sony has unveiled a new sound system that straddles between being a soundbar and a wireless speaker. The Sony HT-AX7 comes with detachable surround speakers and is as compact as it can get. The new Sony HT-AX7 delivers cinematic sound almost anywhere you want it with its wireless architecture.

Sony HT-AX7 sound system

The Sony HT-AX7 is significantly different from any previous Sony sound offering. It is tagged a portable theatre system and it can be transformed from a single unit to a tripartite system. This is because it has two detachable speakers that combine with the unit. The Sony HT-AX7 offers spatial and room-filling sound across the room with its unique configuration. When the speakers are placed around the house in a triangular arrangement, it offers immersive sound.

When the tripartite triangular arrangement has been set up, the Sony 360 Spatial Sound Mapping technology creates multiple phantom speakers which envelopes the room. This delivers spatial audio with the added benefit of a cinematic surround sound output. You just have to place the speakers around without having to embed or install permanent units on the wall or ceiling.

The Sony HT-AX7 features Sony’s upmixer algorithm that can transform stereo into 3-dimensional surround sound. This enables analyzing audio in real-time and delivering immersive sound. Current reviews of the spatial audio offered by the HT-AX7 are positive whether playing music or experiencing movies on a TV screen. The versatile Sony HT-AX7 can also be used as a domestic speaker which can be popped anywhere in your room. The HT-AX7 has up to 30 hours of battery life and Bluetooth connectivity.

The Sony Home Entertainment Connect App provides the control tool for the HT-AX7. It provides a guided setup of the sound system and you can adjust the sound field, volume, and other parameters via your smartphone.

The new Sony sound system does not come with a physical remote unit. The product is made from 100% recycled PET bottles and its packaging is based on bamboo, sugarcane, and recycled paper. The Sony HT-AX7 will arrive in August 2023 in Australia and other markets with a projected $500 price tag.

Microsoft denies Anonymous Sudan claim of data breach

Microsoft has denied claims by a hacking syndicate of breaching its database and accessing user data. Anonymous Sudan hacker collective had claimed that it was in possession of loads of Microsoft user data that was being sold. The group announced that it had successfully hacked Microsoft and had access to more than 30 million Microsoft accounts, emails, and passwords.

Microsoft

Anonymous Sudan placed a $50,000 price tag on the alleged trove of Microsoft data. They also provided a small subset of the database (about 100 email and password combinations) as proof of their claim. It is however difficult to verify the claim of the hacker collective but Microsoft is denying the claims of a data breach. The company says that there were no signs of compromise of its database and its clients should not be worried. It says that its preliminary analysis of the Anonymous Sudan data showed that theirs was not a legitimate claim. It says it has seen no evidence that its customer data has been accessed or compromised.

Anonymous Sudan has had a couple of successful hits in its trajectory of disrupting processes. It recently disrupted the website of Scandinavian Airlines and also took down the Microsoft 365 software suite. The group is suspected to be a pro-Kremlin-driven project for spreading the Russian agenda. The fact that Anonymous Sudan had previously hit the Microsoft 365 software suite including Outlook and Teams gives Microsoft concerns. Whether a breach has been achieved or not, Microsoft remains in the crosshairs of hackers.

Samsung’s second-quarter profit plunges 96% amid ongoing Chip slump

Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest producer of memory chips and smartphones, has reported a 96% plunge in operating profit for the second quarter. The ongoing chip surplus continues to inflict significant losses on the tech giant’s core business, despite supply cuts. In a preliminary earnings statement, Samsung estimated its operating profit to have dropped to 600 billion won ($459 million) from 14.1 trillion won compared to the same period last year.

This projected profit marks the lowest for Samsung in any quarter since the first quarter of 2009. While the figure aligns closely with the estimated 555 billion won, which was based on the forecasts of more consistently accurate analysts, it still signifies a severe blow to the company. Consequently, Samsung shares fell 1.4% during early morning trading, underperforming the wider market’s 0.6% drop.

Although the chip business faced substantial losses in the first quarter, analysts anticipate a reduction in losses for the second quarter due to increased sales of DRAM chips used in PCs, mobile phones, and servers. However, the memory chip market downturn, which commenced last year, is predicted to reach its lowest point in the third quarter, with a potentially modest rebound thereafter.

source: Samsung Semiconductor operations from Samsung Media Library

Investors are now closely monitoring Samsung’s upcoming full earnings report, seeking signals for the third quarter, including the impact of production cuts, potential demand recovery, and improvements in profit mix through higher-end DRAM and high-bandwidth memory products. Despite the current challenges, Samsung is expected to maintain its investment in memory chips this year, positioning itself for increased market dominance in 2025.

Samsung Electronics announced in April that it would reduce its production levels following the revelation of its lowest profit in 14 years. This move was aimed at addressing the supply surplus in the market. Similarly, Micron, another major player in the memory chip industry, stated last week that it believes the current downturn has reached its lowest point, while Hynix executives foresee some relief in the near future, driven by a recovery in China and the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

Although there are indications that the chip oversupply situation is gradually improving, inventory levels across the industry remain historically high, and the economic outlook remains uncertain. However, investors are placing their bets on generative AI to stimulate new demand for servers that require advanced DRAM, specifically DDR5. Servers powered by AI technology typically require four to six times more DRAM capacity compared to standard servers, thus driving the need for next-generation memory solutions.

The expectation of increased demand from AI-driven applications provides a glimmer of hope for the memory chip industry. However, challenges persist as companies grapple with excess inventory and unpredictable market conditions. The sector is closely monitoring the potential recovery, particularly as AI advancements continue to fuel the need for more advanced and high-capacity memory solutions.

Oppo Pad 2 global launch seems near the horizon as it bags another certification

OnePlus recently launched its first-ever tablet in the market. The slate has been on the shelves for quite some time now. But if you would like to have it with a different name and slightly revamped software, the Oppo Pad 2 might be a good option. It is essentially a rebadged OnePlus Pad with Oppo branding. The device is already official in China, and it appears to be approaching its global launch, at least according to its TDRA certification.

Oppo Pad 2 gets TDRA certification

Oppo Pad 2 has been making rounds on various certification sites recently. It was spotted on IMDA yesterday and today, the device has been certified by UAE’s TDRA authority. While the listing does not reveal anything interesting apart from the model number (OPD2202), it does hint at a nearby launch. However, there’s no official confirmation from Oppo yet.

Oppo Pad 2

As we mentioned earlier, the Oppo Pad 2 is nothing but the OnePlus Pad (review). The latter was launched in the global market recently at a price of around $485. You might see similar pricing for the Oppo Pad as well.

To give you an idea, Oppo Pad 2 packs a powerful MediaTek Dimensity 9000 chipset under the hood. On the front, it gets an 11.61-inch IPS LCD display with a 7:5 aspect ratio and Dolby Vision support. The panel also features a 2800 x 2000 pixel resolution, 144Hz refresh rate, and 10-bit colors. There’s a 13MP rear camera and an 8MP shooter for selfies.

The tablet packs up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage. It runs ColorOS for Pad 13, based on Android 13. Fueling the device is a 9,510mAh battery that supports 67W SuperVOOC charging.

Honor X6a could be latest budget phone from Honor, gets TDRA certified

Honor has been very busy this month. The company unveiled the Honor 90 and Honor Pad X9 in Europe yesterday and the Honor X50 in China a day before that. Next week, the brand will introduce the Magic V2 in its home country alongside several other interesting products. While we wait, a new smartphone from the Chinese brand has been spotted online on the TDRA website. The Honor X6a could launch very soon in the international market as the budget model in the series. Here are the details.

Honor X6a should launch soon

Honor’s X series is full of value-for-money mid-rangers, with the Honor X50 being the latest one. However, the lineup also includes some decent budget models. Honor X7a and Honor X8a are some examples. These phones are likely to be joined by a new device soon— Honor X6a. It has recently been spotted on the TDRA website with model WDY-LX2, hinting at a nearby global launch.

Honor X7a

Honor’s naming approach seems to be very different from most other brands. In general, phone manufacturers use a sequential naming convention, where each new model has a higher number than the previous model. This means X Phone 1 will be the successor of X Phone 2. But it is the opposite in Honor’s case. The company has already launched Honor X7a and now has Honor X6a in the works.

In any case, we don’t know any specifications of the Honor X6a yet. The budget smartphone may succeed the Honor X7a, which comes with a MediaTek Helio G37 processor. It also gets a 6.75-inch TFT LCD display as well as a 50MP primary camera on the back. The device comes fueled by a 5330 or 6000 mAh battery depending on the region.

Elon Musk Says Competition Is Fine, Cheating Is Not After Twitter Notifies Meta Of Potential Lawsuit Action Over Threads

Twitter has been plagued with issues ever since Elon Musk took over. The microblogging platform has also introduced a host of changes since then. Yesterday Mark Zuckerberg-led Meta officially released a new social media platform called Threads. It is the talk of the town right now and recorded a whopping 48 million sign-ups in a single day. Now, Twitter has notified Meta of the potential lawsuit action over Threads.

Twitter threatens Meta with a legal action

Threads is somewhat similar to Twitter. It is positioned toward users looking for a Twitter alternative. Threads is essentially a text-based conversation app that is linked to Instagram.

With Meta’s Threads and Twitter being pretty much the same, the latter has issued a legal letter addressed to Mark Zuckerberg about their intent to take legal action. The move comes after Threads is said to have garnered 48 million users within the first day. Meta CEO Zuckerberg has been accused of “unlawful misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and intellectual property”. The letter reveals that Meta intentionally hired dozens of former Twitter employees who had access to the company’s confidential information. Meta used this to their advantage in developing the Threads app.

The letter also bluntly described Threads as a Twitter ‘copy-cat app’. Leveraging trade secrets and intellectual property are deemed as violation of state and federal laws. The letter also mentions that Meta is not allowed to crawl or scrape Twitter’s data.

Meta’s Communication Director refuted Twitter’s claims and stated that no person on Thread’s engineering team has worked with Twitter before.
