Sony Xperia 10 V launched with 6.1 inch OLED display, 48MP Exmor RS sensor, & more

Sony has just announced its latest generation Xperia 1 V flagship smartphone in the market. And alongside this model, it has also launched a new Xperia 10 V premium mid range model, which features some notable specs and features. So let’s have a look.

Design & Display

The Xperia 10 V from the Japanese tech giant arrives with various improvements over its predecessor, which includes a lighter build overall as well. It weighs just 159 grams thanks to its plastic side frame and rear panel, which is also IP65/68 water and dust resistant. Although, the front is protected via a Gorilla Glass Victus.

The device sports a 6.1 inch OLED display that unfortunately only offers 60Hz refresh rate with 120Hz touch sampling rate and Full HD+ resolution. This screen also has a 21:9 aspect ratio, 97 percent DCI P3 color gamut, 10 bit tonal gradation, and a rather noticeable chin and top bezel. The company also claims that the display is around 1.5 times brighter than the previous generation.

Specifications

Under the hood, the Sony Xperia 10 V is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 SoC that is paired with 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage. The memory can be further expanded by up to 1tB via a microSD card slot. The device is powered by a 5,000mAh battery pack as well, which makes this device the lightest 5G enabled smartphone with such a large battery capacity.

This battery pack also supports some form of fast charging, but this detail wasn’t clearly revealed. So we can expect it to be around 30W, which is the same as its predecessor, which supported 21W fast charging. Other notable features include, 3.5mm audio jack, Qualcomm aptX adaptive, NFC, side mounted fingerprint scanner, 60 Reality Audio Certified, 360 Reality Audio Upmix, DSEE Ultimate, and Stereo Recording.

Camera

The cameras are undoubtedly the highlight of this mid range smartphone. The company has just announced the Xperia 1 V, which featured some notable camera improvements and innovations. But the brand is still offering a great photography experience from its Xperia 10 V’s triple camera setup as well. The primary sensor is a 48 megapixel Exmor RS sensor, which is again 1.6 times larger than the previous model thanks to its 1/2.0 inch sensor size. This also supports hybrid OIS/EIS, f/1.8 aperture, and 80° field of view.

Alongside the primary camera, there is an 8 megapixel telephoto lens that offers up to 10x hybrid zoom, f/2.4 aperture, and 1/4.4 inch sensor size. Lastly, the device’s last sensor is an 8 megapixel ultra wide angle lens that has a f/2.2 aperture and 120° ultra wide angle lens. On the other hand, the Xperia 10 V houses an 8 megapixel selfie camera on the front that has a f/2.0 aperture, 1/4 inch sensor size, 1.12μm pixel size, 78° wide angle lens.

Pricing & Availability

The Sony Xperia 10 V has been launched in multiple color options, which includes a Lavender, Sage Green, White, and Black variants. It has a price tag of 449 EUR or around 493 US Dollars. The smartphone will go on sale in Europe, UK, and a few other regions sometime in the middle of June 2023.

Sony has recently introduced its new flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 V, in global markets, highlighting its unique Exmor T for mobile stacked sensor that promises a significant improvement in low-light photography. Along with this, the device comes with top-tier specifications, including a 4K OLED display and a state-of-the-art Snapdragon chipset. To determine if the device is worth its price tag of €1,399, let’s delve into its features in detail.

Design and display

Not much has changed in the physical appearance of the Xperia 1 V compared to its predecessor, however, the device is much sturdier and easy to handle this time around.

It features a boxy frame with flat edges and a pill-shaped vertical camera island. The back and the front are both covered with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 bringing its toughness to the next level. Along with that, the back and the side frame feature a grippy texture which is always appreciated on an expensive device.

The device comes with a 6.5-inch 4K OLED display boasting a 120Hz refresh rate and an aspect ratio of 21:9. The display has moderate bezels at the top and bottom, and the front camera is located in the top bezel. The device comes with an IP68 water and dust resistance rating despite featuring a 3.5mm audio jack and a microSD card slot. The device has an improved set of front-facing speakers equipped with a new amplifier to deliver a more dynamic and richer sound.

Performance & software

The Xperia 1 V boasts impressive hardware, including a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. What sets Sony apart is their inclusion of a microSD card slot, allowing for easy storage expansion. Large smartphone cameras generate a significant amount of heat, but the Xperia 1 V tackles this issue with a 60% larger heat diffusion sheet volume than its predecessor.

With a 5,000mAh battery, the Sony Xperia 1 V supports 30W wired charging, which can recharge the device to 50% in 30 minutes. The smartphone also features wireless charging and reverse wireless charging. According to Sony, the battery will retain a minimum of 80% of its capacity after three years of use.

Out of the box, the phone runs on Android 13 and has minimal bloatware. Instead, Sony has included its pro-grade creator-centric apps such as Photography Pro, Videography Pro, Cinema Pro, and Music Pro. Sony has introduced a convenient change in its Photo Pro and Video Pro apps, allowing their user interfaces to be displayed vertically. This modification will enhance the user experience of taking pictures and videos in portrait mode.

Camera

As always, the flagship Xperia’s key selling point is the camera system, and this time around it is quite special. The primary camera onboard is a 52MP unit with an F/1.9 lens and a 1/1.35” sensor. Sony calls it the Exmor T stacked sensor and it is 70% larger than its predecessor. The photos however are shot in 48MP due to the 4.3:3 aspect ratio, which gets further binned to 12MP images in normal mode.

Sony has separated the photodiode and transistor, placing them on distinct layers that are stacked upon one another. This has allowed the company to independently adjust the size of each component, resulting in a significant improvement in the amount of light captured and reduced noise levels. According to Sony, the new camera sensor can perform twice as well in low light compared to its predecessor.

In addition to the primary camera, the Xperia 1 V retains the same 85-125mm F/2.3-F/2.8 12MP telephoto camera with continuous zoom as its predecessor. Alongside this, there is a 12MP sensor supporting the 16mm ultrawide camera, which features autofocus. The Time-of-Flight (TOF) sensor has been removed and replaced by AI algorithms for focusing purposes. The AI algorithms are also said to boost performance in modes such as Night Portrait, Daylight Portrait, and Night View.

Sony has introduced S-Cinetone for mobile mode, which enables users to capture videos using pre-set cinematic modes that generate professional, authentic colors without the requirement for post-recording color-grading. While on the topic of videos, the camera phone is able to record up to 4K videos in 120 frames per second. Sony’s Alpha camera features have also been included on the Xperia 1 V like the high-performance real-time AF, real-time Eye-AF, burst shooting, etc. Last but not least, the selfie camera has a 1/2.9” sensor capable of taking 12MP images.

Price & availability

Sony’s latest flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 V, will be released in black, platinum silver, and khaki green color options in late June. Specific market availability details are yet to be announced. The phone is priced at €1,399 in continental Europe and £1,299 in the UK. The cost for the US market is still to be confirmed.

As the much-anticipated launch of the iPhone 15 series approaches, new leaks are stirring up excitement. A new leak suggests that the top-tier iPhone 15 Pro Max is set to receive a significant camera upgrade, with the introduction of a periscope lens.

Earlier rumors suggested that the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models would both feature periscope lenses, but reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said that only the Pro Max model will have it. Twitter user @URedditor, with a reliable track record, also claimed that only the iPhone 15 Pro Max would feature the periscope camera.

Sources also revealed that Apple has partnered with LG Innotek and Jahwa Electronics to source 70% and 30% of OIS actuators for the periscope module, respectively.

Better Zoom Capabilities Expected with iPhone 15 Pro Max’s Camera

The enhanced telephoto camera aims to replace the 3x optical zoom lens found in the current iPhone 14 Pro Max, potentially offering up to 6x optical zoom. This would be a substantial upgrade, despite still falling behind the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra’s 10x optical zoom.

The new periscope lens is part of a slew of improvements that Apple seems to be making in the camera department. Along with the new lens, the iPhone 15 Pro models are also said to use a new Sony IMX903 48MP sensor with a larger sensor size of 1/1.14-inch. This enhancement is expected to capture more light and detail compared to the Sony IMX803 sensor found in the iPhone 14 Pro models.

In addition to the camera upgrades, the past leaks hint at other noteworthy changes in the iPhone 15 Pro models. Notably, the use of titanium materials for the chassis and the replacement of the Mute switch with a multi-tasking button similar to the Action Button in the Apple Watch Ultra.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max will retain its 6.7-inch OLED display with ProMotion support for up to 120Hz and super thin bezels, and it will get the USB Type-C port. It is also expected to run on the new A17 Bionic SoC.

While the company had been rumored to replace physical buttons with solid-state buttons, technical issues have reportedly delayed this change. The physical buttons are now expected to be replaced in next year’s Pro models.

LG has launched yet another monitor in the Ultragear lineup, this time adding the model 49GR85DC, which is a 49-inch LG Ultragear curved monitor.

This newly launched monitor by LG appears to take on the Samsung Odyssey G9, which is also a 49-inch monitor. The LG Ultragear 49-inch monitor is now available for purchase in the United States.

The monitor features a 49-inch Dual QHD display with a screen resolution of 5,120 x 1,440 pixels with a 1000R curvature, a 240Hz refresh rate, a 3000:1 contrast ratio, and a 1000-nit peak brightness, along with being VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certified.

The 1000R curved ultrawide panel comes with a 32:9 aspect ratio and supports FreeSync Premium Pro along with HDR10. It supports Picture-in-Picture (PIP) and Picture-by-Picture (PBP) modes. PIP mode displays content from a second connected device in a floating window, while PBP mode allows multiple open windows at the same time by dividing the screen into two discrete sections.

It comes with HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4, but there’s no USB Type-C port on the device, although there’s a USB 3.0 Hub. Given the features, it’s apparent that the monitor is aimed at gamers interested in the immersive size and quick performance.

At the Google I/O, the company officially announced the Android 14 smartphone operating system, and there are a bunch of devices getting the beta version of the software.

Now, among the list of smartphones getting the Android 14 Beta is the OPPO Find N2 Flip, making it one of the first foldable smartphones in the market to get the update.

The OPPO Find N2 Flip early adopters and developers will be able to get ColorOS built on top of Android 14 Beta 1 and can test new features and APIs on their smartphones. It’s noteworthy that this is a beta version meant for advanced users and not to be used on a daily driver as there may be several bugs and issues with the software.

The smartphone features a 6.8-inch FHD+ E6 AMOLED primary display with a 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate and a 240Hz touch sampling rate. There’s also a 3.26-inch AMOLED outer display with a 30/60Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, the device is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ processor with Mali-G710 MC10 GPU.

In the camera department, the phone features a 50MP primary wide-angle rear camera with a Sony IMX890 sensor and an 8MP ultra-wide camera with Hasselblad camera support. On the front side, there is a 32MP snapper with an RGBW IMX709 sensor.

The phone has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and supports 5G SA/NSA, 4G, Wi-Fi 802.11 ax, Bluetooth 5.3, USB Type-C, NFC, GPS, and other connectivity options. It runs Android 13 with ColorOS 13 out-of-the-box and is powered by a 4,300mAh battery with support for 44W SUPERVOOC Flash Charge.

A Google foldable has been in the news for some time now and today the company finally introduced one. The Pixel Fold was launched during the Google I/O conference earlier today. It debuts with a compact form factor that distinguishes it from Samsung’s Z Fold lineup. The foldable gets a durable hinge and is powered by the Tensor G2 chip under the hood. There’s a triple camera setup on the rear, headlined by a 48MP main sensor.

Google Pixel Fold Specs & Features

Before we lay down the specifications, let’s go through its design. The Pixel Fold gets a small form factor and its rear looks very similar to Pixel 7 Pro. There’s a glossy glass back panel and a shiny camera bar. However, the camera bar is not edge-to-edge and it looks like a large bump. On the front, you get thick but symmetrical bezels that also house the front camera. The foldable is using a new teardrop hinge mechanism to minimize the visible display crease.

Moving to the specs, the Pixel Fold gets a 5.8-inch 120Hz OLED cover screen with a 2092×1080 resolution and a 7.6-inch OLED foldable display with a 2208×1840 resolution. It packs Google’s in-house Tensor G2 chipset, similar to the latest Pixel 7 series. It is offered with 12GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of UFS3.1 internal memory.

Google gave us a glimpse of its first tablet last year and today it has finally been made official. Pixel Tablet was launched during the Google I/O conference alongside the Pixel 7a and the long-awaited Pixel Fold. The slate comes with Tensor G2 under the hood, the same processor that powers the Pixel 7 series and the foldable. It gets a large LCD display with support for a 2560 x 1600 resolution. There’s also a wireless dock that functions as both a charging station and speaker.

Pixel Tablet Specifications and Features

The Google Pixel Tablet comes with a 10.95-inch LCD panel that boasts a 2560 x 1600px resolution and a 16:10 aspect ratio. The panel offers a peak brightness of 500 nits, up to 12 hours of video streaming, and USI 2.0 stylus support.

Powering the tablet is Google’s own Tensor G2 processor, which comes paired with a Titan M2 security coprocessor. The device is offered with 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. For photography, the tablet gets an 8MP camera on both the front and back, with a 1.12 μm pixel width, f/2.0 aperture, fixed focus, and an 84-degree field of view.

Other notable features include WiFi 6 support, Bluetooth 5.2, a USB Type-C port, a quad-speaker setup, and three microphones. There are pogo pins on the rear that will allow for dock functionality. The wireless dock functions as both a charging station and a speaker. It will let you use the device as a smart display, similar to the Amazon Echo Show. The tablet gets a 27-Wh battery battery with support for 18W charging.

The Pixel Tablet is offered in three colors: Porcelain, Hazel, and Rose (US only). The 128 GB Pixel Tablet will cost you $499, while the 256 GB model will be available for $599. For years, the A series smartphones have been the bread and butter of Google’s smartphone business, primarily because they offer good value for money. The latest addition to the lineup, Pixel 7a, was unveiled just now during the Google I/O conference and it pays homage to all the previous models with its impressive specifications for the price. The device brings the Tensor G2 chip (the same SoC that powers the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro), wireless charging, an upgraded camera setup, and much more.

Pixel 7a is the new value champ?

With an affordable price tag, Pixel 7a could be a great option in the mid-range category, especially in markets like the US, which is dominated by Samsung and Apple flagships. The smartphone brings essentially the same design as the vanilla Pixel 7, featuring a bar-like camera module with a matte aluminum cover. The display is flat and the bezels are noticeable but at least they are even on all sides.

Talking about the hardware specs, the smartphone retains Pixel 6a’s compact 6.1-inch FHD+ OLED display but Google has upgraded the refresh rate from 60Hz to a decent 90Hz. Under the hood, it gets the home-brewed Tensor G2 chipset, which also powers the flagship Pixel 7 Pro. While the chip’s benchmark scores are not comparable to even Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, it is said to be a more intelligent and efficient processor.

Fueled by a 4386mAh battery unit, the Pixel 7a supports underwhelming 18W wired charging and comes with an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance. But on the bright side, the device carries support for wireless charging.

Google has also upgraded the cameras on its latest mid-ranger. It comes with a dual rear camera setup that is headlined by a 64MP primary sensor and a 13MP ultra-wide. For selfies, you get a 13MP shooter on the front. As per the company, these cameras will support Super Res Zoom (up to 8x) and Real Tone for skin colors.

How much does it cost though?

Google Pixel 7a comes with a price tag of $499 in the United States. It will be available in Sea, Charcoal, and White color options.
