Xiaomi Retains Dominance in Q1 2023 Chinese TV Market, TCL Soars, and Huawei Struggles

The first quarter of 2023 has proven to be a mixed bag for the Chinese TV market, with some brands maintaining their lead and others experiencing significant declines. According to recent data from RUNTO, the total shipment volume of Chinese TV brands reached 8.52 million units in Q1, a minor 0.6% decrease compared to the same period in 2022, and an 8.9% drop compared to 2021. Here are the details…

Xiaomi Retains Dominance in Q1 2023 Chinese TV Market, TCL Soars, and Huawei Struggles

In Q1 2023, the combined shipment volume of the top seven traditional Chinese TV brands—Xiaomi, Hisense, TCL, Skyworth, Changhong, Haier, and Konka—along with their sub-brands reached 7.89 million units, representing a 2.5% YoY growth. These brands captured a massive 92.6% of the total market share, a historical high, and a 2.7 percentage point increase from the same period in 2022. Breaking down the performance of each brand:

  • Xiaomi, including its Redmi sub-brand, shipped approximately 2 million units in Q1, accounting for 24% of the overall market share. Despite a slight decrease compared to 2022, Xiaomi maintained its top position in the Chinese TV market for the fourth consecutive year.
  • Hisense, along with its Vidda sub-brand, shipped nearly 2 million units, achieving a 13% YoY growth and a market share increase of around 3 percentage points. Notably, the Hisense brand led the market in monthly shipments during February and March.
  • TCL, featuring sub-brands Leiniao and Lehua, witnessed a 37% YoY growth in Q1, the highest growth rate in the industry. Its market share also increased by 4.5 percentage points compared to the same period last year.
  • Skyworth, accompanied by its Coocaa sub-brand, saw a considerable 11% growth in Q1, along with a 1.5 percentage point increase in market share.
  • The second-tier brands Changhong, Haier, and Konka, which typically have an annual shipment scale of around 3 million units, experienced a challenging Q1. They faced intense competition from top-tier brands, resulting in decreased shipment volumes and combined market shares. Their total shipments amounted to roughly 1.3 million units, with a YoY decline of over 20% and a market share reduction of around 5 percentage points.
  • Huawei struggled significantly in Q1 2023, as internal adjustments negatively impacted sales. Shipments fell below 200,000 units, marking a YoY drop of over 50%.
  • Sharp, a foreign brand, faced a similar decline as Huawei, with its shipment volumes cut in half. Other brands like Sony, Samsung, and Philips maintained their 2022 market shares, with a combined share of less than 10%.

As we move further into 2023, the industry will closely monitor the TV market’s performance during the short holiday in early May and the 618 presale event at the end of May. These events will likely provide crucial insights into the market dynamics and future trends for the remainder of the year.

Huawei FreeBuds 5 Debut in Europe with a daring waterdrop design

Huawei unveiled its latest TWS earphones, called FreeBuds 5 in China last month alongside half a dozen other products. And today, the company introduced the hearables in the European market as well. Debuting as the successor to 2021’s FreeBuds 4, these new earbuds bring a unique waterdrop design that looks like no other. There’s also support for spatial audio, active noise cancelation (ANC), and dynamic EQ tuning. Let’s have a closer look at the details.

FreeBuds-5-Huawei

Huawei FreeBuds 5 Specs & Features

The FreeBuds 5 bring all the usual features you’d see in premium wireless earbuds, but what’s striking about them is the design. Straying far from the stemmed and non-stemmed earbuds, Huawei chose to go for a unique waterdrop design. These in-ear type earphones have no silicon tip in order to create more surface area for the skin.

Talking about the specifications, the FreeBuds 5 come with support for the L2HC and LDAC codecs, allowing hi-res audio streaming. They offer spatial audio on HarmonyOS 3 devices and bring active noise cancelation (ANC) and dynamic EQ tuning. Huawei claims to use an ear canal adaptive algorithm that offers better noise reduction based on the shape of the user’s ear.

The hearables are equipped with an 11mm driver unit and use Bluetooth 5.2 for connectivity. There’s support for multi-point pairing as well. The earbuds are claimed to offer a playtime of around 5 hours that can be extended to up to 30 hours with the charging case. The case charges through USB-C and wireless charging support is also there.

Huawei FreeBuds 5 Price & Availability

The FreeBuds 5 from Huawei will be available in the United Kingdom at EUR 159 starting April 27. They can be purchased through the Huawei Store and select retailers. The earbuds will be available in silver, white, and orange colors.

ZTE Axon 50 Ultra Design and Key Features confirmed in a new teaser

Although ZTE’s popularity in the global market cannot be compared to other Chinese OEMs like Xiaomi and Oppo, you may recognize it from its unique flagships with under-display selfie cameras or the gaming phones launched under its sub-brand Nubia. The company is gearing up to launch yet another interesting device in its home country tomorrow, called Axon 50 Ultra. Ahead of the debut, the brand has revealed its design and some interesting features.

Axon 50 Ultra will debut as the successor to last year’s Axon 40 Ultra, which boasted an under-display camera on the front. For some reason, the upcoming handset will get a conventional selfie camera housed in a punch-hole cutout. However, the company makes up for that by including the trending satellite connectivity feature on board.

ZTE Axon 50 Ultra

ZTE Axon 50 Ultra gets a dual operating system and an independent security Chip

As can be seen in the image above, the handset features a form factor similar to Galaxy S23 Ultra with curved sides and a flat upper and bottom. The handset gets a large camera module that covers one-third of its rear. The main camera sensor is enclosed in a large ring while the other two are featured in relatively smaller rings.

ZTE Axon 50 Ultra

In addition, ZTE has revealed that Axon 50 Ultra will use dual operating systems and an independent security chip. While there’s little information available regarding the dual OS, we assume the security chip will enhance the privacy and protection of the user. Similar to Samsung’s Knox and Google Pixel’s Titan M2 chip, this security chip is expected to provide enhanced security measures for the device.

ZTE Axon 50 Ultra 5G is confirmed to feature the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, a 64MP OIS main camera, a 50MP ultra-wide-angle macro lens, a 50MP telephoto unit, and a built-in 5000mAh battery with 80W fast charging support.

OPPO Find X6 Pro Takes the Crown as the World’s Best Camera Phone with DxOMark

The OPPO Find X6 Pro has impressed the smartphone camera industry with its remarkable DxOMark image score of 153, securing its place as the top-ranked smartphone on the DxOMark global image ranking list. The phone has surpassed Honor Magic5 Pro and Huawei Mate 50 Pro, which were the top contenders for the crown until now.

OPPO Find X6 Pro

DxOMark experts praised the OPPO Find X6 Pro for its balanced and exceptional performance in all photography sub-items such as photos, videos, zoom, and bokeh. The camera’s accurate exposure, excellent texture, and noise balance have been hailed as a breakthrough in mobile photography.

Moreover, DxOMark noted that the OPPO Find X6 Pro performed exceptionally well in low-light shooting scenes, scoring the highest points among all smartphones. The phone’s large sensor camera module helps preserve details in the scene under all lighting conditions while controlling noise to deliver good image quality both day and night.

OPPO Find X6 Pro Dxomark score

The standout feature of the OPPO Find X6 Pro’s camera is its three-camera setup, including a 1/1.56-inch ultra-sensitive periscope telephoto lens, a 1-inch large bottom wide-angle lens, and a free-curved ultra-wide-angle lens. All three lenses boast the industry’s strongest light sensitivity, providing users with a remarkable photography experience.

Furthermore, the OPPO Find X6 Pro utilizes new photon matrix technology, which improves the dynamic range of light and dark tones by eight times compared to traditional technology, resulting in natural light and dark tones.

Despite these impressive achievements, DxOMark noted that the phone lacks contrast in backlit portraits, and sometimes exposure is unstable in photos and videos, which occasionally leads to unnatural skin color imaging. Nonetheless, the OPPO Find X6 Pro remains an excellent choice for anyone looking for the best smartphone camera experience available in the market.

The NFC version of the Xiaomi Smart Band 7 (review) offers two additional features. It comes with support for contactless payments (compatible with Mastercard and Visa) and Amazon Alexa as it has a microphone.

Since the vanilla version officially retails at €59.99, the NFC variant should not be cheaper than this. For comparison, the Mi Smart Band 6 NFC from 2021 was introduced at just €54.99.

Apart from the aforementioned differences, the Xiaomi Smart Band 7 NFC is the same as the Xiaomi Smart Band 7. Hence, it sports a 1.62-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 490 x 192 pixels and 326 PPI. The screen supports touch input and 500 nits peak brightness level.

It houses a 3-axis accelerometer, a 3-axis gyroscope, a PPG heart rate sensor, and an SPO2 sensor. It arrives with over 110 fitness modes, heart rate monitoring, sleep tracking, blood oxygen level monitoring, stress tracking, menstrual cycle monitoring, and more.

The wearable uses Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity to pair with smartphones via the Mi Fitness app (formerly Xiaomi Wear). Last but not least, the 5 ATM water-resistant device can last up to two weeks on a full charge.

Apple’s Q1 2023 Mac Shipments Plummet 40.5%: A Tough Blow for the Tech Giant

Apple has experienced a significant drop in Mac shipments during Q1 2023, with a 40.5% decline compared to the same period in 2022, according to market intelligence provider IDC. This decline has led to a reduction in Apple’s worldwide PC market share, which fell from 8.6% to 7.2% between Q1 2022 and Q1 2023. Here are the details…

Apple’s Mac Shipments Plunge Over 40%, Worse Than Major Rivals

While all five of the largest computer makers, including Apple, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, witnessed double-digit drops in first-quarter shipments due to weaker demand and ongoing inventory challenges, Apple’s decline was the most significant among them. This downturn was not entirely unexpected, as Apple CFO Luca Maestri had anticipated double-digit declines in Mac and iPad sales for the March quarter.

Apple CEO Tim Cook also acknowledged that the challenging macroeconomic environment had negatively impacted iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch sales. Probably the current drop in shipments marks the end of the COVID-driven demand era, signaling a temporary return to pre-pandemic patterns. Despite heavy discounting, IDC researcher Jitesh Ubrani expects elevated inventory levels to persist until the middle of the year, and potentially into the third quarter.

While PC manufacturers are expected to struggle in the short term, IDC anticipates growth to rebound by the end of the year. The weakened demand presents an opportunity for PC manufacturers to reevaluate their plans and address supply chain issues. Apple, for instance, has started to encourage suppliers and assemblers to move their operations beyond China. This period of adjustment could prove beneficial for the company in the long run.

Apple’s shares closed down over 1.5% on Monday, and the company is set to report its March quarter earnings on May 4th. As Apple faces these challenges, stay tuned to Gizmochina for further updates on Apple’s market performance and strategies.

Google working on a way to deal with spam calls with AI

Google is apparently working on a solution to deal with all the unwanted calls one has to deal with on a day to day basis. The company is working on a method to effectively deal with all spam or robocalls with the use of AI (Artificial Intelligence).

As of right now, the Search Engine tech giant already offers Call Screen feature on its Pixel series of smartphones to help deal with this issue but this only deals with the issue to a certain extent. However, it appears that Google is looking to build a more capable technology that will better help users avoid these spam/robocalls thanks to conversational AI. According to a new report, the Jonathan Eccles, the Group Product Manager of the Phone by Google app talked about how the brand wants to solve problems related to unwanted calls on the latest episode of the Made by Google Podcast.

Google

The company is seeking to tackle this issue with conversational AI. He stated that “Multi-step, multi-turn conversational AI could open a lot of interesting doors in terms of creating this protective and helpful layer at the front of every incoming call.” The official further added that the group product manager has hinted that this feature might be arriving in some form or the other later this year.

The Call Screen feature on Pixel smartphones already use AI at the moment. Although, Google is likely looking to further improve this system with AI technology. Unfortunately, this is all the information available regarding this matter but we can expect to hear more about such a feature around the time of the Pixel 8 series launch.
