Redmi Note series global sales cross 320 million units

The Redmi Note series is one of the best-selling smartphone lineups worldwide. In early December, Xiaomi revealed that it had sold over 300 million units to date.

Just three months later, the company discloses that it has now sold even more Redmi Notes. Let’s check out what it has to say.

Redmi Note 12 5G
Redmi Note 12 5G

At the Redmi Note 12 Turbo launch event yesterday, Xiaomi revealed that the sales of the Redmi Note lineup exceeded 320 million units globally. In other words, the company managed to sell 20 million units in the last three months.

It also boasted that Redmi Note 11 was one of the top 10 best-selling smartphones worldwide in 2022. As per Canalys, 18 million units of Redmi Note 11 were sold last year. It is tied with iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Unfortunately, though the sales figure seems high, the overall shipments have been dropping since the last few quarters. For instance, Xiaomi sold over 40 million units of Redmi Notes in just 5 months in 2021.

Unlike earlier years, Xiaomi now sells a wide variety of devices spread across different price segments under the Redmi Note series. Even so, it couldn’t catch up with its previous sales records.

The global smartphone market is now saturated. Consumers are sticking with their old phones for a longer time than ever. The current economic condition is not helping either.

Sharp and E Ink announce 42-inch “ePoster” zero-power digital poster display

Sharp and E Ink Holdings have announced the launch of a 42-inch Black and White Electronic Paper Digital Poster Display (ePoster) that requires zero power consumption during display. The product uses reflective display technology to reflect ambient light to display images. The brighter the environment, the better the display effect.

Sharp Electronic Paper Digital Poster Display (ePoster)

The ePaper poster display is just 3 cm thick and weighs about 8 kg, with a thin and light design. The black and white screen requires maximum power consumption of about 40W to drive the ink particles when refreshing. As a comparison, Sharp’s same-sized LCD screen has a power consumption of 115W.

Unlike traditional digital displays, this ePaper poster display can continue to display even if the power is turned off, making it an eco-friendly alternative to traditional digital billboards.

The estimated selling price of the Sharp 42-inch ePaper poster display is around 550,000 yen (approximately $4,163 USD). The product can be used for in-store signs in retail stores such as clothing stores and can also be used for evacuation guidance at disaster sites.

Sharp plans to use its expertise in the installation and operation of digital billboards, as well as its service network throughout Japan, to replace paper posters in areas where it was difficult to install digital billboards with electronic paper digital posters.

The ePaper poster display is the result of a three-year cooperation between E Ink and Sharp, with the goal of contributing to the era of carbon neutrality through the popularization of electronic paper digital posters. In the future, the two companies plan to not only focus on the development of large-size or color e-paper displays but also expand the global e-paper billboard business. Sharp will launch this 42-inch Black and White Electronic Paper Digital Poster Display (ePoster) in the Japanese market in early April 2023.

Windows 12 Rumors: A Modern OS with AI, Faster Updates, and Better Security

Rumors about Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 12 operating system are buzzing, as leaks of its system requirements surface. Just two years after Windows 11’s release, the company seems to be gearing up for its successor. Windows 12 is expected to bring major platform upgrades, modernizing the OS with AI, quicker updates, and enhanced security. Here are the details…

Microsoft plans major platform upgrades for “Windows 12” that will modernize the OS with AI, faster updates, and better security

For years, Microsoft aimed to modernize the Windows platform. Windows Core OS was an attempt to create a lightweight, secure, and fast-to-update platform. However, Microsoft never launched a version for traditional PC form factors. Windows 10X, the last attempt, was canceled in 2021 after extensive testing and development.

Windows 12

Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans indicate that the company is working on a new project called CorePC. This project intends to modernize the Windows platform with similar innovations as Windows Core OS, but with a focus on compatibility for legacy Win32 applications. CorePC is designed to be modular and customizable, allowing Microsoft to configure different “editions” of Windows with various feature and app compatibility levels.

CorePC is rumored to implement state separation, allowing for faster updates and a more secure platform by creating read-only partitions. State separation also enables quicker and more reliable system reset functionality, crucial for competing with Chromebooks in the education sector. Microsoft’s approach with CorePC is to deconstruct the full Windows desktop into a modular, adaptable system while maintaining support for legacy apps and workflows as needed. This strategy could enable Microsoft to deliver a Windows version that rivals Chromebooks in terms of OS size, performance, and features.

Microsoft is also reportedly exploring a “silicon-optimized” version of CorePC, focusing on AI capabilities and vertically integrated hardware and software experiences, similar to Apple Silicon. AI-driven features under development include context-aware prompts, object and text recognition within images, and dedicated hardware support for specific AI functions. As plans and features may change before the launch, tech enthusiasts and industry experts eagerly await further announcements and developments regarding the much-anticipated Windows 12.

Apple M3 chip could outperform M2 Max & M2 Pro despite having lower cores

Apple is gearing up to unveil its latest generation of silicon that will power its new smartphones and PC products, A17 Bionic & M3 chips respectively. But prior to an official announcement, a new leak has revealed the performance of the upcoming M3 chipset and it is quite impressive. So let’s have a look.

The latest leak arrives from a tweet that was shared by Vadim Yuryev, who shared the synthetic benchmark scores of the M3 chipset on the GeekBench 6 platform. Looking at these figures, the M3 chipset has apparently scored 3,472 points in the single core tests and 13,676 points in the multi core tests. Based on these scores, it is clear that the M3 chipset arrives with some notable improvements over its predecessor, the M2.

Apple

These upgrades put it in a league that makes them comparable to the high end MacBooks that feature the more powerful M2 Max and M2 Pro chipsets. In the multi core tests, the M3 is just 6 percent slower than the M2 Max in terms of multi core scores. But keep in mind, that the M2 Max has 12 cores, while the M3 is believed to feature just 8 cores. However, single test scores tell a different story, with the M3 showing an impressive 24 percent faster performance over the M2 Max.

On the other hand, it also beats the 10 core M2 Pro chipset by roughly 12 percent in both the single core and multi core tests. This basically means that the upcoming Apple M3 is quite capable and could potentially match the top silicon from the Cupertino based giant. Although, this is still just an unconfirmed leak, so take this news with a pinch of salt and stick around for more updates regarding this matter.

This project could set the stage for future crewed Artemis missions to the Moon. Here are the details…

Nokia’s Bold Leap: Bringing 4G Internet to the Moon

Nokia has partnered with Lunar Outpost and Intuitive Machines to develop a 4G communications system specifically designed to withstand the harsh conditions in space. The Nova-C lunar lander, developed by Intuitive Machines, will transport the system and other payloads to the Moon, with the ultimate destination being the Shackleton crater in the southern lunar region. This tech demonstration could become a crucial component of future crewed Artemis missions, with NASA planning to land two astronauts on the lunar surface in 2025.

Nokia 4G

In 2020, NASA selected Nokia for this ambitious project, granting its Bell Labs $14.1 million in funding. The company plans to test the lander’s short and long-range communication capabilities at various proximities, ranging from a few hundred meters to between two and three kilometers away. This network will be vital for sustaining human presence on both the Moon and Mars, according to Nokia.

Redmi Note 12 Turbo 1TB variant sold out in seconds

Yesterday, the Redmi Note 12 Turbo finally went official in China. It is the world’s first smartphone with the new Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 2 chipset.

Thus, the device is the most powerful Redmi Note series phone to date. Also, it is the first in the lineup to feature 1TB storage and at the same time, the most affordable one as well.

Just a few hours after the handset’s release, the company has now revealed its initial sales performance. Let’s go through the details.

Redmi Note 12 Turbo

Redmi says that it took only 2.5 hours to break the sales record of 2023. The Redmi Note 12 Turbo became the best-seller across the leading three e-commerce platforms in China, namely JD, Tmall, and Pinduoduo.

Additionally, the 1TB variant of the device sold out in seconds online along with the Harry Potter Edition. Redmi’s GM Lu Weibing asks buyers to check availability at their nearby Xiaomi Homes.

As mentioned earlier, the Redmi Note 12 Turbo is the cheapest 1TB smartphone on the market right now. It carries an official price tag of just ¥2,799 (~$405). On top of that, it can be had at only ¥2,599 (~$380) as part of launch offers.

Unfortunately, the brand did not reveal the number of units sold. Previously, Xiaomi used to share those numbers but it has stopped doing it now. This is likely due to the drop in smartphone shipments these days.

The Redmi Note 12 Turbo is expected to release as Poco F5 outside mainland China. The launch is tipped for next week, however, that may not happen.

Vivo to merge iQOO to reduce costs and increase efficiency

Chinese smartphone giant Vivo is reportedly planning to integrate its popular sub-brand iQOO into its core business operations, in a move that could help the company increase efficiency and reduce costs. According to a recent report from 36Kr, Vivo and iQOO have shared several resources such as R&D, supply chain, and media procurement in the past, but have operated independently in areas such as planning, media strategy, and e-commerce.

IQOO logo

The new move would involve merging iQOO’s branding and online business teams with Vivo’s existing teams, though it is unclear whether iQOO will retain a separate business unit. According to a source from Vivo, senior management has already discussed the possibility of eliminating iQOO’s independent stores and counters.

According to the latest data from CINNO Research, the top five mainstream smartphone brands in the Chinese market all experienced negative growth in January, with a range of decline between 4.2% and 23.5% compared to the same period last year. Among the Android camp, only Xiaomi’s sales decline was smaller than the overall decline in the smartphone market. OPPO, Honor, and Vivo all saw significant sales declines, with decreases of 13.5%, 19.2%, and 23.5%, respectively. Vivo (excluding iQOO) is currently the fifth-largest player in the Chinese smartphone market.

The integration of iQOO into Vivo’s operations could help the company consolidate its resources and improve its competitive position in the market. However, it remains to be seen how this will affect the two brands’ product and branding strategies moving forward. Vivo and iQOO have not yet responded to the reports.
