Apple halts plans for using China’s YMTC chips over pressure from the US

Pressures from the US have apparently led to Apple halting some of its plans to use chip technology that originates from China. The company is now putting its plan to use YMTC (Yangtze Memory Technologies Co.) memory chips on hold.

According to a NikkeiAsia report, multiple sources close to the matter have revealed that the halting of the plan arrives after the latest rounds of US export controls that were imposed against the Chinese tech sector. Furthermore, the news is also indicative of Washington’s crackdown and is disrupting the supply chain as well. Notably, the Cupertino based giant had already completed the process to get approval to use the YMTC’s 18 layer 3D NAND flash memory and also got it certified before using it on iPhones.

apple

However, the US government has since put out tighter restrictions around exports from China earlier this month. Interestingly, YMTC’s 128 layer chips are one or two generations behind competition like Samsung and Micron, but they are also around 20 percent cheaper than other leading rivals. Now, growing geopolitical pressure and criticism from US lawmakers have apparently led to Apple halting its plans for this deal.

As per one of the sources, “The products have been verified, but they did not go into the production lines when mass production of the new iPhone began.” Another source added that “YMTC is government-subsidized so they can really outprice competitors.” Meanwhile, Brent Fredberg Brandes Investment Partners’ director of investments stated that “Apple may continue wanting to use YMTC in the local market for China. But the way the regulations are set up currently, it’s very unlikely that YMTC will even be able to supply the kind of NAND chips in a couple of years that Apple would want.”

Google working on Pixel 7 Ultra with large 1 inch camera sensor: Leak

Just recently, Google had announced the Pixel 7 series of flagship smartphones. Now, it appears that the company plans on launching another device, which will apparently be a Pixel 7 Ultra model that will feature a large 1 inch camera sensor on the back.

Interestingly, the first source, which claimed the existence of the Pixel 7 Ultra was from developer Kuba Wojciechowski. As per Kuba, the Search Engine giant’s recently released source code for the Pixel 7 lineup revealed the codename for the model, which is Lynx and L10 is its identifier. Notably, Kuba had also previously revealed that this Pixel 7 Ultra model would also house a triple camera setup. Out of the three sensors, the primary shooter will reportedly be a 50 megapixel Samsung ISOCELL GN1 sensor that has a 1.2um pixels and is 1/1.31 inches in size.

Furthermore, this sensor will be paired with a 64 megapixel Sony IMX787 sensor that has a size of 1/1.3 inches and could be the telephoto lens. Lastly, the tertiary camera is an unannounced 13 megapixel Sony IMX712 sensor that will be used for both the front facing sensor and even the ultra wide angle lens as well. But now, a new tweet from known tipster Ice Universe claimed that Google is also working on a Pixel 7 Ultra model. However, the new leak claims that the device will have a 1 inch sensor on the back, which is contrary to Kuba’s information.

However, the tweet did not share if Samsung will be working on this sensor. On the other hand, Sony has already released such a sensor in the market. So if this news is true, we can assume that Sony might be the one supplying Google with the large primary rear camera. Additionally, another known tipster Digital Chat Station has implied that Apple supplier Foxconn might manufacture the Pixel 7 Ultra, which will feature a 50 megapixel main camera and a Sony IMX787 telephoto shooter.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max beats Pixel 7 Pro, Galaxy S22 Ultra, & other flagships in battery tests

The Apple iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max had just recently been launched in the global market. It is the company’s latest flagship grade handset, and it appears that the device has managed to beat some other high end competitors in a battery life comparison.

This battery comparison test was done by PhoneArena on its YouTube channel. In the test, the tech publication compared the new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max to other flagship grade smartphones. This includes the like of the Google Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7, Pixel 6 Pro, and even the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. While this is admittedly not a very diverse lineup, the Pixel 7 Pro is one of the latest premium device, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra is one of iPhone 14 Pro series biggest competitors in the ultra premium segment.

Here, we can see the new 2022 iPhones dominating the list in multiple tests. The first had the smartphone put through a simulator to replicate typical web browsing. Both iPhone 14 Pro models were hours ahead of the competition. Taking a look at the results:

  • iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max: 19 hrs & 5 mins
  • iPhone 14 Pro‌: 16 hrs & 18 mins
  • Pixel 7 Pro: 14 hrs & 19 mins
  • Pixel 7: 13 hrs & 56 mins
  • Galaxy S22 Ultra: 13 hrs & 17 mins
  • Pixel 6 Pro: 13 hrs & 13 mins

In the second test, all of the smartphones had to play the same YouTube video until they died out, with each handset having 100 percent brightness levels. The iPhone 14 Pro Max managed to dominate the list again, while the results of the Pixel 7 Pro managed to edge over the iPhone 14 Pro model. The top end iPhone 14 model recorded 11 hours of playback, while the Pixel 7 Pro had 9 hours and 39 minutes. Base iPhone 14 Pro offered around 9 hours and 14 minutes of runtime. While one would assume that its because both iPhones have the biggest batteries, but in actuality the two models have the smallest battery capacities in the entire list. So, Apple has clearly managed to offer a stellar battery life performance on its latest smartphones.

Source code reveals the Google Pixel 7 Mini might be in the works

The newly released source code of the Google Pixel 7 series suggests that the search giant may be working on a small-screen flagship smartphone, perhaps a Pixel 7 Mini. Previously, a popular Chinese tipster also hinted at the existence of a smaller Pixel device. The codebase also reveals some information about the rumored Pixel Fold. Let’s have a closer look.

Google Pixel 7

As unearthed by developer Kuba Wojciechowski, the latest source code of the Pixel 7 series includes references to two upcoming devices, codenamed “Felix” and “Lynx” (via Notebookcheck). It has been reported that “Felix” is the long-rumored Pixel Fold and “Lynx” is the codename for a third Pixel device, possibly the alleged Pixel 7 Ultra or Pixel 7 Mini. However, the moniker of the devices is yet to be officially confirmed.

The released code hints that the ultra-wide-angle camera and the selfie snapper of “Lynx” will be equipped with Sony’s IMX712 sensors. In addition, the device will switch from the BCM4389 WiFi/BT chip used on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 to Qualcomm’s WCN6740.

Furthermore, “Lynx” will utilize the same display panel that is found on Pixel models such as Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel 6a. While early rumors suggested a 2K display for the Pixel 7 Ultra, this device only has a 1080p display. It seems unlikely that a Pixel 7 series device with the “ultra” moniker will use a display worse than the Pixel 7 Pro. This means “Lynx” is most likely the Pixel 7 Mini.

Details about the rumored Pixel 7 Mini are still pretty short. We are not even sure if the device is actually in the works or not. “Lynx” could also be the affordable Pixel 7a. We should learn more details in the coming details. So, stick around for the updates.
