US may relax some restrictions on Huawei as it aims to retain its global tech lead

Just a couple of years ago, Huawei had been one of the biggest smartphone makers and was even set to topple both Apple and Samsung for the throne. However, it soon got hit with sanctions from the US, which essentially crippled its smartphone operations as a whole. But now, it appears that there might soon be some changes that help improve its situation.

Huawei Logo MWC 2019

For those unaware, the Chinese tech giant got hit with various restrictions that took away its access to technologies that originate from America. This basically had it lose its supply to crucial technology for its products. Furthermore, the US had followed up this with more sanctions that cut off Huawei from its primary chip supplier, TSMC. Since then, the company has launched just two flagship series, with both of them only supporting 4G networking despite the chips being used were flagship top end Qualcomm Snapdragon chips.

After Joe Biden became the new president, many had hoped that the new administration would lift some restrictions against Huawei. But this was not the case. However, it appears there will be some changes, with a Bloomberg report claiming that the US Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security issued a rule allowing certain low level technologies to be shared. In other words, some technologies can be shared to sanctioned entities like Huawei.

Alan Estevez, the Commerce undersecretary for industry and security stated that “US stakeholders need to be fully engaged in international standards organizations, particularly where the critical but sometimes invisible standards that they set have important national security as well as commercial implications.” In other words, this might be some positive news in a while for the Chinese smartphone maker.

Apple discontinues original AirPods Pro following AirPods Pro 2 launch

With the launch of the Apple iPhone 14 series, the company discontinued a number of older iPhone series models. Now, it has extended the same treatment to the original AirPods Pro, which has been discontinued following the launch of the newer AirPods Pro 2.

For those unaware, the second-generation AirPods Pro TWS earbuds are the Cupertino-based giant’s latest flagship wireless earphones. It arrives with a number of new features, which include Spacial Audio, improved ANC (Active Noise Cancellation), and improved bandwidth connectivity as well. Apart from these changes on the inside, the AirPods Pro 2 largely retains a similar design to the original AirPods Pro, albeit with some more polishes to the design.

With the Apple AirPods Pro already carrying a hefty price tag, the company decided to launch the AirPods Pro 2 for the exact same cost. However, this came at the cost of discontinuing the previous generation entirely. So, the AirPods Pro 2 is available for purchase for 249 US Dollars via retailers like Amazon. In other words, this also means that you can’t find the original AirPods Pro for a lower price tag from Apple’s own website.

Notably, even if the AirPods Pro has been removed from the iPhone maker’s official website, the original version is still available in various other stores. So, certain third-party retailers are also selling the AirPods Pro for the same price as the AirPods 3 that costs around 179 US Dollars.

The news arrives from known tipster Ice Universe, who has been a reliable source for the South Korean tech giant’s upcoming products. Now, the leakster claims that he is 100 percent sure that the Galaxy S23 Ultra will feature a 200 megapixel primary camera on the rear that will have a size of 1/1.3 inches and have a 0.6μm sized pixels and a larger aperture of f/1.7 for getting in more light.

For those unaware, the previous generation Galaxy S22 Ultra had an 108 megapixel sensor that had a 1/1.33 inch size and a 0.8µm pixels and an f/1.8 aperture. He further added that the image sensor on the Galaxy S23 Ultra will be slightly larger than the sensor found in the new Apple iPhone 14 Pro’s main 48 megapixel camera, which also has a 1/1.3 inch size.

Although, Ice Universe also stated that it will be smaller than some sensors on premium smartphone offerings from rival Android brand model that will be launching next year. Reportedly, the 200 megapixel camera on the Galaxy S23 Ultra will not be the HP1 or HP3 sensors from the company that were announced previously. So, it is likely a new 200 megapixel sensor that could be exclusively customized for the next true Samsung flagship.

Apple iPhone 14 series battery size revealed

As usual, Apple did not announce the battery capacities of the iPhone 14 series at its launch event last week. Even the official listings of the iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max on Apple.com do not mention the exact size of their batteries. However, it only states that the iPhone 14 series offers an “all-day battery life.” A new report by Macrumors has revealed the battery size of all four iPhone 14 models.

The publication has obtained the battery details of the iPhone 14 models from a Chinese regulatory database. Here is the battery capacity of each iPhone 14 series model:

  • iPhone 14: 3,279mAh
  • iPhone 14 Plus: 4,325mAh
  • iPhone 14 Pro: 3,200mAh
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max: 4,323mAh

In comparison, the iPhone 13 mini has a 2,406mAh battery, the iPhone 13 has a 3,227mAh battery, the iPhone 13 Pro has a 3,095mAh battery, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max has a 4,352mAh battery.

iPhone 14 Pro series

As can be seen, the iPhone 14 Plus has the largest battery ever seen on an iPhone. The official listing of the iPhone 14 series states that the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which has almost the same battery as the Plus model, will offer a longer battery life. It is probably because the Pro model has a ProMotion display, which is said to support 10Hz to 120Hz variable refresh rate.

On Friday (Sept. 9), Apple began receiving pre-orders for the iPhone 14 lineup. The Plus variant is scheduled to go on sale on Oct. 7, while the three models are all set to be available for purchase on Sept. 16.
