Amazon announces the Proteus, a fully autonomous warehouse robot

Amazon is blazing its stellar trail in robotics by releasing a fully autonomous warehouse robot. The company has been at the forefront of the development of robotics in the workplace for a decade since the formation of Amazon Robotics. The robotics arm of the company has delivered excellent automation robots within its decade-long existence.Amazon Proteus

Amazon Robotics has announced two new robots – Proteus and Cardinal which offer new insights into robotics technology. Proteus is an autonomous floor system while Cardinal is a robotic arm. Both robots are being integrated into Amazon’s shelf and cell system which has evolved in ten years. Proteus can move autonomously within the facility using advanced safety, perception, and navigation technology. Amazon says it was built to be automatically directed to do its work. It needs not to be confined to restricted areas and has broad applications. Amazon says Proteus can help employees in a variety of ways such as the lifting and movement of GoCarts around its facilities.

Amazon has made several key acquisitions since it acquired Kiva Systems a decade ago. Amazon Robotics has deployed more than 520k robotic drive units across its facilities thus far. The company continues to improve on delivery times for products due to its highly automated systems. The entry of Proteus and Cardinal will further accelerate Amazon’s drive toward lightning-fast deliveries. The development of the new systems could not be unconnected with Amazon’s acquisition of Canvas in 2019. The hardware is designed to interact directly with workers on the floor, in line with Canvas’s previous autonomous solutions.Amazon Proteus

It is also impressive that the new system can fit snugly with Amazon’s existing Kiva systems with minimal retrofitting. Amazon says that Proteus will be initially deployed in the outbound GoCart handling areas.

Ultimately, Amazon hopes to automate GoCart handling across the network for greater efficiency. The development of these autonomous robotic systems by Amazon gives it a cutting-edge advantage in the market. Its huge investment in robotics has transformed the company tremendously.

Amazon Alexa might soon sound like anyone you like

Amazon Alexa might be getting a cool new feature in the near future. The company plans on offering an update that would allow the AI voice assistant to mimic voices, which basically means that Alexa can sound like whoever you want it to.

Amazon

According to a Reuters report, the popular online retailer and tech giant plans on offering users an Alexa that sounds like their grandmothers, a former president, or just about anyone else. During the MARS conference held earlier this week in the US, Amazon senior vice president Rohit Prasad stated that the idea is to let Alexa copy anyone’s voice after hearing it for less than a minute.

Prasad also added that the goal is to have Alexa help “make the memories last” after “so many of us have lost someone we love” during the pandemic. Although, it is currently unknown when the company plans on rolling out this feature but we know its coming sometime in the future. Notably, there are possibilities of illegal and criminal activities being performed through this feature. But there should be some levels of safeguards as well.

Amazon

Furthermore, the new feature for Alexa can also have applications as a companion feature. In the video shared by Amazon, a child asks that “Alexa, can grandma finish reading me the Wizard of Oz?” Alexa then proceeds to read the children’s book using the kid’s deceased grandmother voice. So, it is a sweet and wholesome feature, if not a bit creepy as well.

Samsung announces 200MP ISOCELL HP3 smartphone camera sensor, with smallest ever 0.56μm Pixels

Samsung Electronics has just announced its new high end camera sensors for smartphones. It is the 200 megapixel ISOCELL HP3, which arrives with various improvements and features over its predecessor.

Samsung

For those unaware, the HP3 sensor is the successor to the ISOCELL HP1, which had .64μm pixels. But now, the South Korean tech giant has announced the new HP3 image sensor, which has the industry’s smallest 0.56μm pixels. In other words, the latest camera brings a high resolution sensor that has the smallest pixels. The company is also bringing a new technology, which is called the Epic Resolution Pro that offers professional level high resolution for smartphone users.

The new ISOCELL HP3 has a 12 percent smaller pixel size and can also enable around 20 percent reduction in camera module surface area as well. Notably, the HP3 sensor also supports video recording up to 8K at 30 frames per second and 4K recording at 120fps. Interestingly enough, it can record high resolution videos with minimal loss in the field of view, especially in 8K resolutions.

Another notable aspect regarding the new sensor is the Tetra2pixel technology. Typically, pixel binning, which has the camera sensor combine four pixels (AKA quad binning), helps offer brighter images in low light scenarios. But with the new HP3 sensor, Samsung is combining an impressive 16 pixels into one. In theory, this should enable the camera to offer one large sized pixel sensor that will be capable of take in more light for better performance in night scenes. At the moment, it is unclear in which smartphone this sensor will launch with, but it is likely reserved for top end model like the Galaxy S series.

Samsung Could soon roll out the Android 13-based One UI 5 beta to Galaxy S22 Phones

It will not be wrong to say that Samsung is the undisputed king of software updates. The company has gotten so good at updates that it even embarrasses Google now. Samsung recently rolled out the One UI 4.1 version on almost all the major Galaxy devices. Now, it seems the company is gearing up to release the beta version of Android 13-based One UI 5.0 to the flagship Galaxy S22 Series.

Samsung appears to have begun the development of the Android 13 beta version for Galaxy S22 series smartphones as the latest build has been spotted for the Galaxy S22 in South Korea (Via TizenHelp). The spotted beta firmware is labeled as S906NKSU2ZVF6.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Burgundy Galaxy S22 Plus Phantom White Galaxy S22 Phantom Black

Looking at the recent developments, it will not be surprising if Samsung starts the beta testing program next month in July. The Galaxy S22 series which includes Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra will be among the first devices to get the taster of the new beta build. However, more flagship smartphones will eventually join the party.

Samsung recently made some firmware policy changes which will enable the Galaxy S22 users in Europe countries to get their hands on the beta firmware soon.

Android 13 release date is still not announced yet as the OS is still under development. However, Google has shared a schedule that suggests we can expect a stable release sometime in August 2022. Google is yet to release the third beta version of Android 13.

Earlier this month, Oneplus confirmed that it will start the Android 12-based ColorOS 12 beta program for its premium smartphones from 2019 on June 23. Following the schedule, the Chinese handset brand has opened registrations for interested users in China to try out the new software.

oneplus 7t
Oneplus 7T

For the unaware, Oneplus shifted to ColorOS for its smartphones in China in 2021 by abandoning the HydrogenOS development. Even in global markets, the company’s smartphones now boot a new version of OxygenOS based on the ColorOS base.

As the brand is now done with updating its 2020 portfolio to Android 12, it has now started beta testing for the eligible devices from 2019. This includes the likes of Oneplus 7, Oneplus 7 Pro, Oneplus 7T, and Oneplus 7T Pro. The Oneplus 9RT has also joined the beta program along with these old devices.

As mentioned earlier, ColorOS 12 is only available for the Chinese variants of the aforementioned smartphones. For the global variants, the brand may begin the OxygenOS 12 Open Beta initiative in the coming days.

As far as stable release is concerned, Oneplus hasn’t shared a timeline yet. But it should be out in two months’ time. Because that’s how much time the firm took for its 2020 flagship smartphones earlier this year.

Android 12 is the third major software update for the Oneplus 7 series, the second major system update for the Oneplus 7T series, and the first Android update for the Oneplus 9RT.

Nothing has confirmed that Phone (1) will not launch in the US

Nothing has just confirmed what was already expected before. The company will not be launching its first ever smartphone, the Phone (1) model, in the US market. Since the device’s announcement, no telecom operators in the US had included the device in its supported list and the brand has officially commented on this matter now.

Nothing

As per the company’s official statement with PCMag, “While we’d love to bring phone (1) to the entire community around the world, we’re focusing on home markets, including the UK and Europe, where we have strong partnerships with leading local carriers. It takes a lot to launch a smartphone as you know, from ensuring the handset is supported by the country’s cellular technologies to carrier partnerships and local regulation, and as we’re still a young brand we need to be strategic about it.”

For those unaware, Verizon does not allow handsets on its network, if they are not on its supported list. AT&T follows a similar method and only enables VoLTE for select smartphones. So, the Phone (1) from Nothing is practically not supported by its network. Furthermore, without VoLTE support, a smartphone would have to use 3G network to make calls. However, the carrier has shut down its 3G networking earlier this year.

Nothing

While T-Mobile is still more open in this regard, it doesn’t use all of the same bands as European carriers. So, there will be an issue with coverage. Thus, Nothing has no plans on launching a smartphone in the US, without having at least one of these carriers whitelist its handset.

Micron unveils world’s highest capacity microSD card with 1.5TB storage

Back when smartphones were still gaining popularity, there was still a time where memory cards had capacities in megabytes rather than gigabytes. In the modern market, this figure has broken past the terabyte mark as well, but it seems that Micron intends to push the boundary even further.

Micron

The company has just announced the world’s highest capacity microSD card, which features a whopping 1.5TB of storage. This is made possible through the brand’s new i400 microSD card that has a maximum storage capacity of up to 1.5TB, which is a massive amount of additional storage for electronic devices that support memory expansion via a microSD card slot.

Although, its still unfortunate that most modern smartphones do not support this technology, there are a number of other applications still. Micron managed to achieve record breaking capacity by using 176 layer 3D NAND technology, which is also the same tech that is used in SSDs. In other words, it basically means that memory cells are stacked on top of one another in a 3D pattern.

Micron
i400 is offered in different storage capacities as well

However, this also implies that the new memory card will likely have a rather premium price tag in the beginning, which is typically true for most new technologies that break records. But, this also means that the previous gen 1TB models will soon become more affordable as well.

Apple iPhone 14 series models to reportedly come with larger capacity battery

Apple iPhone 14 series models have been leaked several times and even though the launch is still months away, we pretty much know everything about the upcoming phones.

Now, in the latest development, some information about the battery capacity of the upcoming iPhone 14 series has been leaked online.

iPhone 14 Pro

According to tipster ShrimpApplePro, three out of the four iPhone 14 models will come with a larger capacity battery compared to their predecessor while one model will have a slightly low-capacity battery.

The report claims that the Apple iPhone with a 6.1-inch display will be powered by a 3,279mAh battery which is bigger than the 3,240mAh battery in iPhone 13. The Pro model will be powered by a 3,200mAh battery which is an upgrade compared to a 3,095mAh battery found on the iPhone 13 Pro.

The top-end model on the lineup — Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max is expected to be powered by a 4,323mAh battery which is a slightly low-capacity battery than the 4,352mAh battery found in the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Interestingly, there are reports which claim that the iPhone 14 Pro Max will have an additional battery life of 2 hours and 10 minutes compared to its predecessor, even though it has a slightly low-capacity battery.

The Apple iPhone 14 Max, which is set to replace the Mini model, will be powered by a 4,325mAh battery. If this leak is to be believed, then the iPhone 14 Max will have the highest capacity battery among all four models.

This time, the Cupertino-based technology giant is expected to launch the iPhone 14 series with significant differences between the Pro and non-Pro models. For instance, the Pro models will ditch the notch in favor of a punch-hole cutout and will come powered by the latest A16 Bionic chipset.

Nothing is gearing up to launch its first ever smartphone in a couple of weeks. However, prior to its launch, the company had recently announced an auction for the first 100 units of the Phone (1) model, and now, the highest bids have crossed a whopping 2,600 US Dollars.

Nothing Phone (1) hands-on

For those unaware, the company had began the auctions on the 21st of June 2022, which was set to be live till June 23rd. This auction was hosted on StockX and included limited edition models that have laser engraved numbers ranging from 1 to 100. It isn’t surprising that a number of people bid for these limited edition Phone (1) models owing to the amount of hype Nothing has created through its marketing strategies.

Thus, the bids have skyrocketed well past the smartphone’s actual retail value, with the highest bids hitting a whopping 2,679 US Dollars. Interestingly, this is closer to the price tag of high end foldable smartphones like the top end variant of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. After the auction ends, the company has promised to ship the smartphone to the one that bids the highest within 35 working days.
